The format will be consistent with theestablished pattern, with live operating onThursday 22 November from King’s CollegeHospital and Hexham and Wansbeck Hospitals, and the presentation of papers, invited lecturesand the Association of Laparoscopic TheatreStaff (ALTS) Meeting on Friday 23 November. Wehope to get the usual very high standard ofsubmitted papers and it is our intention toprovide an exciting, stimulating andauthoritative selection of speakers. It is intended that the two-day programme islinked to a laparoscopic course of the Associationof Surgeons in Training (ASiT) that will take placeon Wednesday 21 November and all participantsare invited to join the ALS Scientific Meeting.Newcastle has undergone a transformation inthe last few years and now has one of the mostvibrant city centres in the UK. The conferenceitself will take place in the Civic Centre and weare lucky enough to have the Council Chamberas our auditorium. You will not have experiencedmore comfortable seating! The hotels are situated on the newly renovatedTyne Quayside, where the opening reception willbe held. We have a magnificent venue for theConference Dinner in The Biscuit Factory, abeautifully laid out and very interesting artgallery within the city centre. The success of the meeting will be judged by thequality of the presentations as well as the size ofthe audience. We will take care of the formerand trust you will take care of the latter.

The Northumbrian Upper GI Team of Surgeons(NUGITS) was formed at the turn of themillennium by Mr Liam Horgan, Mr Sadiq Bawaand Mr Jonathan Guest. The surgical team nowincludes Stephen Attwood, Paul Gallagher,Keith Seymour, Sean Woodcock and PeterSmall. Also included are our laparoscopic upperGI Nurse Specialists, Sue Colley and LeighDonnelly, a bariatric nurse specialist, TerrySergeant, a training manager for theatres,Sister Lillian Broatch and Graeme Ryder, ouradministrator from the training department ofthe Trust.

The aim of NUGITS is to promote the teachingand training of laparoscopic skills and over thepast seven years we have successfully run 85training courses for surgeons, nurses and ODAstaff. Unlike most other UK courses NUGITSoffers one to one training with “hands on”operating and includes laparoscopic incisionalhernia, laparoscopic inguinal hernia, laparoscopic fundoplication and hiatus herniarepair, laparoscopic exploration of common bileducts, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, bariatricsurgery and advanced laparoscopic courses. Our goal is to produce a top class training teamand a top class clinical service for our patientsin Northumbria. This includes the developmentof laparoscopic theatres in all 3 of our hospitalsat North Tyneside, Wansbeck and Hexhamlinked by state of the art informationtechnology and audio visual systems. We arebuilding a Laparoscopic Institute at Hexhamwhich will allow us to advance teaching andtraining in the region. The Institute will open inJune 2008 and provide a comprehensive rangeof courses, from all disciplines of medicineincluding the Royal College of SurgeonsLaparoscopic Skills Courses for which we willbe an approved centre

The NUGITS group has an active researchprogramme looking at laparoscopic simulatorsand their role in surgical training. Workpresented by our research fellows has been

rewarded by regional and national prizes. Ourwebsite (www.nugits.nhs.uk) providesinformation for professionals and patients alikeincluding videos of operations and informationsheets. All the information and applicationforms for our courses are found here.

NUGITS has established a link with KilimanjaroChristian Medical Centre in Tanzania and weperformed the first laparoscopic cholecystectomyin Tanzania in autumn 2004. We have runNUGITS training courses in Tanzania and laterthis year we hope to extend the course tobecome an East African NUGITS LaparoscopicCholecystectomy Course.

2006 was a good year for NUGITS beingrecognised by the DOH Institute forImprovement and Technology for the highestday case rate of laparoscopic cholecystectomiesin the country and becoming finalists in theHospital Doctor Surgical team of the year award.

On behalf of my fellow NUGITS I warmlywelcome you to the beautiful Northeast and Ihope you enjoy your time with us at the 2007ALS conference in Newcastle.
