ASSURE Methods Assignment

Teaching Holiday traditions to 4th graders. There are 20 students: 11 girls and 9 boys. There are 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish, and 2 African Americans.

Objective - My 4th grade students will learn the different ways to celebrate Christmas (according to religion) by researching and presenting an illustrated project on the Christmas traditions of a religion that is not their own. They will be required to fill a poster with pictures, written information, and also to bring in, at least, two important example items to share with the class. These presentations will be completed within one week and the students will have learned the many different Christmas traditions with 100% accuracy.

Analyze learners

There are 20 students in the class: 11 girls and 9 boys. There 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish, and 2 African Americans.

The students are at the learning level to do the research that will help them find the information they need to complete this assignment. To make sure they use the correct resources, I will use two class days to take them to the computer lab to begin the research together.

This lesson will appeal to auditory and kinesthetic learners, and will also incorporate group discussions.

State objectives

By the end of this lesson, the students will know the different traditions that are used to celebrate Christmas according to the religion that one practices.

Select Methods, Media, and Materials

Media and Materials- Poster boars, pictures, and physical objects brought in by the students will be used to teach the lesson.

Utilize Media and Materials

Previewing the Materials- I will visit each student’s desk individually to make sure he/she has come to class prepared as instructed in the assignment’s directions.

Preparing the Materials- The students will prepare the materials that will be used to learn in the assignment.

Preparing the Environment- I will make sure the student’s desks are arranged properly to view the front of the classroom with no problem. I will also clear the front of the classroom of all things excluding a small table to accommodate the illustrated projects.

Preparing the Learners- Each day of presentations, I will give the students an overview of who will be presenting and which religion each project will be on, reminding them that some traditions may not be like the ones they live by at home.

Require learner participation

After each project, the other students will be required to come up with, at least, 4 things they learned that they did not know before this assignment which will cause many group discussions.

Evaluate and revise

Each day of presentations, I will give the students a summary of what we all learned that day. I will also follow that with a couple of my favorite parts of each student’s project.
