ABSTRACT IMPROV
Artist, Don Black, Will Color Our World at SVWC
For immediate release: October 6, 2015
“Abstract Improv” is the perfect title for Don Black’s art exhibit opening this coming
Friday in Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury’s Lawrence Gallery. Aside from being a
professional artist for 31 years, Don has been involved in music for 57 years as a
performer, conductor, administrator, and teacher. He is a tenured Professor Emeritus of Music
Theory at Shenandoah University and up until recently, played clarinet in a jazz combo.
He brings jazz improvisation to painting as he invents, composes, creates and experiments.
Don’s inspiration comes from music and the paint itself, from the activity of painting,
from a love of nature and being outdoors, and from regular contact with talented artist-
colleagues. Currently, much of Mr. Black’s creative time is devoted to layering techniques,
utilizing opaque as well as transparent watercolor. He also paints with acrylics on both paper
and canvas, and experiments with collage materials. We are so fortunate to have his exhibit
here, as Don is also showing his paintings in two other galleries at this time.
“This exhibit of colorful abstract works is unlike anything we have had on display in a
long while,” says Kitty Zuckerman, who serves as staff liaison to the Art Committee at SVWC.
The public is invited to view Don Black’s work in SVWC’s Lawrence Gallery, from Oct. 9
through December 5, 2015. The opening reception is this Friday, Oct. 9 from 5:30—7:00 p.m.
