Feeling Roomyeditor’sletter

It’s 6 a.m. and quiet where I sit. Peaceful, with just a little

drizzle outside. It’s nice here. It’s

roomy.

Roomy is a new state of mind in my

home. This past weekend we cleared

the clutter of moving boxes in our

walk-out basement. We rearranged

furniture, brought in a new dining

table and began to paint the oppressive wood paneling. In

short, we invigorated the entire lower �oor and it’s paid off in

a really unexpected way.

Sure, I completely expected to love getting rid of those #@&*(@#

boxes. I knew I’d love watching a movie on the new couch. But

what I didn’t expect is how renewing this �oor has kind of…

renewed our family time? As weird as that sounds.

After two tiring days of organizing, sweating and occasionally

grumping at each other, we threw ourselves a cookout to

celebrate. That cookout quickly became the most fun, loud,

giggly family time we’d had in months!

I tried to put my �nger on what felt so different and I �nally

realized that the new layout was responsible for this cohesive,

new feeling. Before—one of us would be upstairs reading, one

in another room playing Legos and a third grilling outside. But

now we could do this all in one open space. One wonderful,

roomy space.

And my makeover is minimal compared to the major overhauls

you’re going to see as you �ip through this magazine. I mean,

if a coat of paint and some furniture moving can feel this

great, what effect must some of those massive kitchen, or

whole house renos feel like? There’s the real reason people

invest in their homes. The ROI isn’t just resale value - it’s in

how these renovations transform their family life. That’s

invaluable stuff. It’s worth every penny invested, every tarp

on the furniture, every smudge of construction dust.

After this weekend, I’m so inspired to make my home �ow

even better for my family. I hope you �nd similar inspiration

in this, our very special Best of Before & After edition. (Psst!

Don’t cheat and �ip to the back. Just like the Oscars, we’re doing

our biggest reveal – the Whole House winner – at the very end!)

There really is something to be learned from each project.

Make sure you read the Judges’ Comments! They offer key

takeaways from each project. So get reading this issue. Get

inspired. Get roomy.

I love the look of marble

Keeping Ants at Bay

When landscaping, avoid using

plants like roses, shrubs and fruit

trees that are prone to aphids and

similar insects, which ants use

as a primary food source. Layers

of mulch and heavy vegetative

ground covers hold the moisture

needed by ants to thrive.

Store any �rewood away from the

home and remove any dead wood

or wood scraps from around the

exterior foundation, where ant

colonies can often be found.

Seal all plumbing or roof leaks and

check crawl spaces and attics for

excess moisture.

Runners, Start Your Engines!It’s a hot, hometown sweaty institution and it’s happening this month. The

Peachtree Road Race will take place on July Fourth and thousands of runners

and families will be there. Will you? What began on July 4, 1970 with only 150

runners has swelled to a massive event that is now the largest 10k in the world!

Runners start in ‘waves’ which begin at 7:30 a.m. But you don’t have to be a

runner to be part of the action. You can cheer the runners on at several pre-

arranged shady spots and meet your favorite runner at the Family Meeting Area

Bulent Baydar, AIA, NCARB, is a project architect at Harrison Design Associates. His keen eye for structure and form was absolutely instrumental in the judging process. We leaned heavily on his expertise when it came to judging the more substantial remodeling work in our winners’ projects. We appreciate Bulent’s unique perspective and that he took time out of his busy schedule to judge on our panel.
