native of Alabama, Rhodes has painted all her life. Settling in

Atlanta after graduation from Queens College, she earned a Master’s Degree from Georgia State University and taught Art History at the Atlanta College of Art, Georgia State University, and DeKalb College. Devoting full time to painting since 1995, she has won awards in local and regional juried shows. In addition to several galleries around the southeast, her work may be seen at her studio in the Tula Art Center.

Artist Statement:For me, nature is a timeless subject,

an earthly paradise which we may tend or

neglect or pave. What I want to evoke in my landscapes is the intensity of nature’s force, its power to recharge the physical environment, season after season, recycling abundant growth throughout the centuries. I’ve been told that the wind is always blowing in my paintings. I hope that wind is the breath of the Spirit. I am fed by nature’s light and color, comforted

by its underlying geometry, and awed by its muscularity. I like to show people in love with the natural world.

Red underpainting, layers of color and vigorous brushwork give life to the surface and represent the complexity of the universe.

Ann’s work can bee seen at Tula Art Center D-2, 75 Bennett Street, Atlanta and she can be reached at [email protected] or 404 401 1955.

CREATIVE PROCESS:

PEARL CLEAGE: SEARCHING FOR THE CENTER THAT BRINGS US ALL TOGETHERBy Holley Calmes

grew up in three great movements,” says Pearl Cleage, Atlanta-based novelist, playwright, and poet whose work has illuminated a generation

fi lled with change, struggle, and victory. “The Civil Rights movement, the Anti-War Movement, and the Women’s Liberation Movement shaped my life and my work. I think being a part of a group of people trying to change the world for the better is what fueled my work then and now.”

Cleage has produced 8 novels, 2 books of poetry, 2 books or essays, 2 books of short stories, 10 plays and 2 full length performance pieces. Her work is widely embraced by international audiences, but to her, it is a continuous process, constantly moving forward.

“A friend told me a long time ago that the key to being a writer for life is not to try to make everything perfect, but to keep writing consistently so you produce a body of work upon which you can be judged. I like that, because it means you’re always getting better at the work you do and seeing it as part of one whole piece, not a bunch of little pieces.”

Cleage’s body of work includes novels, poetry and plays, each offering its author a distinctly different creative experience.

“I love writing plays,” she states. “Writing fi ction is a solitary activity. You write alone. The reader experiences the work alone. You write a play alone, but when you go into rehearsal, you become part of a large collaborative effort with lots of other artists including directors, actors, stage managers, designers, etc. When you’re fi nally ready, you complete the collaboration by inviting the audience to share the experience. There is nothing in fi ction writing to compare to an opening night!”

She enjoys working at home, surrounded by the comforts of “good luck talismans, a roaming cat, and WABE’s Lois Reitzes providing great music.” Home also allows husband Zaron Burnett, also a writer and a theatre director, to be close at hand. “I am a very disciplined writer. When I’m working on a project, I try to write from 10 a.m. until 5 daily. I fi nd when I am writing every day, I can keep the stories and characters alive in my head.”

“I like the process of discovery that reveals the story to you if you work hard and concentrate!”

It is in these times of concentration where Cleage searches for “the center.” She says, “Writers all over the world are telling stories of war and peace, family, love, loss, hope and despair. Those stories might be different in their specifi cs, but there is, if we do it right, a center that reveals our common humanity. I am always looking for that center.”

This summer Cleage will once again participate in the Alliance Theatre’s Collision Project, a unique opportunity for young people to work with artists on “recreating” a classic text through exploring their own world and experiences. “I love the Collision Project!” says Cleage. “I know this sounds corny, but these young people are so bright and curious and committed, it is impossible to stay cynical when you encounter them.”

THE ALABAMA SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL: FILLED WITH AH-HA! MOMENTS

By Michael Vigilant

Are you looking for an “ah ha!” moment? Drive into the Blount Cultural Park in the

geographic center of Montgomery, Alabama, turn a corner and there it stands, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival; 100,000 square feet of beautiful castle-like arts complex. Visitors can’t help but drop their jaws. And what’s as appealing as the outside is what’s going on inside—outstanding professional theatre performed on two unique stages.

ASF has a full and varied schedule of plays this spring and summer in its 750-seat Festival and 263-seat Octagon theatres. Twelfth Night runs through May 9; Around the World in 80 Days, April 19-May 19; the Tony Award-winning comedy God of Carnage, April 18-May 19; and Macbeth, set in a post-apocalyptic world will be remounted for two performances May 10 and 18 as will To Kill a Mockingbird, May 12-18. For the theatre junkie, ASF has two “Extreme Weekends,” May 10-12 and 17-19. Patrons can see all fi ve plays in one weekend.

What’s more, the May 10-12 weekend includes ASF’s nationally renowned Southern

Writers Project Festival of New Plays. Four concert readings take place in the theatre’s intimate Octagon, where writers, directors, dramaturgs, actors and patrons converge to experience the birth of a play. Plays from the recent past that achieved “ah ha!” status are Gee’s Bend, Bear Country, Rocket City , The Fall of the House and In the Book Of. All have gone on to success in other theatres throughout the country.

Hot musicals have been perfect for the air conditioned cool of the theatre during the Deep South’s summer months and ASF will wrap up its 2012-13 season with Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash, July 11-August 4.

ASF features travel packages and can suggest plenty of eating options. One new culinary opportunity is ASF’s own Black Swan Bar & Bistro. Dinner service is available before shows as are libations from the bar. The eye-catching décor is made up of actual set pieces from previous shows. You can sit on a medieval throne, drink in hand, and take in a vista of the park.

Now there’s an “ah ha” moment. For more information on ASF, visit www.asf.

Based on E.L. Doctorow’s award-winning book, Ragtime is a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America with a

rich score full of Joplin-esque music. The musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families–that of a stifl ed suburban mother, an inventive Jewish immigrant, and a daring young Harlem musician–as they confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. Their compelling stories intertwine to form a rich tapestry of hopes

and dreams, struggles and triumphs, rhythm and rhyme–set to an epic, Tony Award-winning score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Historic fi gures such as Henry Ford, Harry Houdini, and J.P. Morgan interact with fi ctional characters all united by their courage, compassion, and belief in the promise of the future.

The Biblical saga of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable. Joseph, his father’s favorite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar’s wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly fi nd themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

The 2013/14 Alliance Stage season opens September 6, 2013, with Harmony – A New Musical, by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman. Harmony tells the story of The Comedian Harmonists, a close harmony ensemble of six young men in 1930s Germany, who took the

world by storm until the group’s religious composition put them on a collision course with history.Next on the Alliance Stage – the Off-Broadway hit By the Way, Meet Vera Stark, by Pulitzer-

Prize winner Lynn Nottage, tells the story of an actress trying to break the mold of stereotypical African-American fi lm roles of the 1930’s. The Alliance will also produce the world premiere The Geller Girls by Atlanta playwright Janece Shaffer, a romantic comedy about two Jewish sisters whose lives are forever changed by Atlanta’s Cotton Exposition of 1895. The Alliance Stage season closes with the musical Tappin’ Thru Life starring tap legend Maurice Hines who narrates his and brother Gregory’s life story.

The 2013/14 Hertz Stage season celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition with three plays written by past competition winners and the world premiere of the 2014 competition winner. The Hertz season begins with the American Premiere of Choir Boy, by Tarell Alvin McCraney, a coming of age story about a different kind of boy. Also on the Hertz — Warrior Class, a political thriller by Kenneth Lin, followed by the world premiere of The Tall Girls, a play about a girl’s basketball team in the depression-era Midwest. The winner of the 2014 Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition is In Love and Warcraft, by Madhuri Shekar, which looks at relationships in our very digital age through the eyes of an avid gamer who feels safer in her online relationships than in real life.

The 2013/14 Youth and Families season consists of – The Grimm Lives of the Inbetweens, Shrek The Musical, based on the popular DreamWorks character, and the 24th Alliance production of A Christmas Carol.

On the heels of a critically acclaimed third season, Serenbe Playhouse presents its fourth season, A Season of Change. The

summer will begin with the world premiere adaptation of Margery Williams’ classic The Velveteen Rabbit (Friday, June 7 – Saturday, July 27), followed by Lee Blessing’s political drama A Walk in the Woods (Thursday, June 27 – Sunday, July 14) and conclude with the Broadway favorite Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical (Thursday, July 25 – Sunday, August 11).

The season will kick off with our 4th annual Fundraiser, The Dali Gala, a theatrical, surreal experience complete with preview performances of the upcoming season. Next up will be our World Premiere adaptation of The Velveteen Rabbit set amid the backdrop of post-Civil War Savannah, then the raw, political drama A Walk in the Woods and the Broadway hit HAIR: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical. The Playhouse will also

be continuing its Late Night Cabaret Series, offering our 2013 Serenbe Playhouse Summer Camp with a focus on Shakespeare, producing The Legend of Sleepy Hollow as the fi rst ever Fall production, and reviving the holiday, traveling hit A Diva’s Christmas.

In its third season, “A Season of Dreams,” Alice in Wonderland left children of all ages inspired with imagination and wonder. Next in line, A Midsummer Night’s Dream set under the stars proved the then three year old theatre

could in fact dream bigger as the show was a huge success, drawing in larger crowds than ever before. Finally, the Regional World Premiere of the soulful musical Time Between Us concluded the season by leaving audiences engaged and introducing new work to the Atlanta stage. Serenbe Playhouse is proud to once again be named 2012’s “Best Place to See a Play” by Lifestyle Magazine and “Best of Atlanta: Emerging “Green” Room” by Atlanta Magazine.

Center for Puppetry Arts presents Brer Rabbit & Friends

April 11 – May 26Live music and

delightful stories about Brer Rabbit and his friends fi ll the stage. The fun begins as the gang gathers to sing an early morning ditty. But competition gets the best of them when the characters begin a battle for bragging

rights. Who is the swiftest? The strongest? The smartest? Brains beat brawn when Brer Bear, Brer Fox, Brer Rabbit, and Sister Mud Turtle fi nd themselves in a briar patch of trouble. So, join the whole gang for this fun-fi lled Southern romp.

Rule 3 Presents Persephone’s FallPersephone’s

Fall is the tale of a transformative personal journey through the Underworld. Ancient and contemporary forms intersect as dancers create and inhabit a dark, visionary landscape of shifting identities and emotional snares. Choreographer Kristyn McGeehan draws no hard lines, instead allowing the performers to fl ow from character to scenic element to visual chorus. Unlike the traditional kidnapping tale, this is an exploration of the heroine’s passionate quest for personal agency and selfhood in the face of comforting but stifl ing love. Artist Jason Gray’s expressive masks and the haunting live music of The Ghosts Project set the otherworldly scene.

Serenbe Playhouse With an incredible

lineup, this summer is sure to intrigue as Serenbe Playhouse presents A Season of Change. Leave the straight and narrow for walking. This isn’t merely the new Porsche Cayman. This is a world unlocked. It’s finding enlightenment and exhilaration in those twists in the road. Something we call the Code of the Curve. It’s midengine balance, agility and precision. Combined with increased horsepower, lighter weight, a wider stance and acceleration from 0 to 60 in a mere 4.7 seconds, it translates into adrenalinefueled curve-carving that opens up a world of possibilities. Unlock the Code of the Curve with a test drive. Porsche. There is no substitute
