1966 Atlantis Cricket Club New York 2014

Steve Welcome

President, Atlantis Cricket Club - NY

I can finally sing, ”We are the champions! We are the champions!…” The audio version is better. Our men’s and women’s teamexperienced the sweet taste of success this year. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the men’s squad forwinning the Eastern American Cricket Association (EACA) T20 Blitz championship and making it to the Power 40 final, and to theladies for winning the 4th Annual GWCA Atlanta Women’s T20 tournament; their third such championship title in as many years.

Atlantis men’s team is one of the youngest and most talented groups of players in the EACA. It was heartening to see the guysfinally able to reap the fruits of their hard work. Our captain Alex Amsterdam, deserves special mention for his outstanding andconsistent performances as a batsman. More important, his steady and calm leadership was instrumental, I believe, in theteam’s success. Alex was well supported by his team with different players stepping up with noteworthy performances. I wouldlike to recognize the contributions of all the players, and I look forward to us building on this year’s success, and winning manymore championships.

It should be noted that the players were put in a winning position by the tireless and hard work of our “support team.” ToManager Lester Hooper and Coach Kerk Higgins, thank you for your strong guidance of the team throughout the year. ToCourtney “Sarge” Legal, thank you for your unfailing support of the guys. To Keith Aaron, thank you for sharing your experienceand imparting your wisdom to the young men of our club. To Leslie “Tulu” Lewis, thank you for the being the heartbeat of ourorganization.

In this championship year, it gives me great pleasure to recognize two outstanding champions, whose contributions to ourorganization are part of the foundation upon which our club now celebrate its success. We are honored to recognize theoutstanding contributions of William “Bill” White and Desmond Thompson, by bestowing upon them, Honorary LifetimeMembership. William Whyte, the former DCC and Guyana middle-order batsman was one of the best batsmen never to haveplayed for the West Indies. Bill’s many outstanding batting performances for Atlantis and his tidy medium pace bowling, wereinstrumental in the successes we enjoyed throughout the 1980s and 90s. Desmond was equally outstanding in those years. As ahard-hitting batsmen Desmond was fearless at the crease and possessed a great pair of hands, taking every catch that came hisway. I had the pleasure of playing with both men and I can attest to the fact that in addition to being talented cricketers, theyare also fine gentlemen. Bill and Desmond, we thank you for your past and continuing service to our club.

Now that the 2014 cricket season has concluded, we will channel our efforts to our off-field activities, as has been our mantrathroughput the years. This coming holiday season we will conduct our annual coat and toy drive. I urge you to get involved andenjoy the rewarding experience of helping the less fortunate among us.

There were no financial stipend recipients this year, however, part of every dollar we raise continues to go to our ShevonneMentis Educational Scholarship Fund. Thank you all members and supporters for keeping this fund going.

As I reflect on the year we have had, I would simply like to say to our male and female players, be proud of representing Atlantisand uphold the spirit in which cricket is played, while respecting the traditions of the game. Enjoy every moment and recognizethat the friendships formed now will endure long beyond your playing days.

My gratitude to the members of our Executive Board for their leadership. We are extremely fortunate to have a group of ded-icated, hardworking and selfless Board members who are committed and have worked tirelessly to guarantee the smooth oper-ation of our club, while maintaining the strong core “Atlantis” principals and values.

To all of our members, supporters, and sponsors, I warmly thank you for all that you do for Atlantis. Have a safe, happy andprosperous holiday season. I look forward to another tremendous year in 2015 as we build towards a banner year in 2016,when we celebrate our 50th anniversary.

In the song, ‘Hotel California’ the guests ‘could check out but can never leave’. Atlantis is the ‘Hotel California’ of cricket clubs: You join and never want to leave. DesmondAlexander Thompson is a quintessential member of Atlantis, who joined in 1980, and thirty-four years later is still a stalwart of the club.

Born in Guyana in 1960, Desmond was the first of five children of Arthur and Josefa Thompson. He is tough, hard-working, optimistic, determined, generous and fun-loving. This package of qualities has made him an outstanding citizen and member of Atlantis. He has also demonstrated the ability to face many of life’s challenges and to come out cheerful.

Desmond was playing club cricket at age 13 for theYMCA in local competitions. He represented the Georgetown Under-16

team. At 16, Desmond joined the Guyana Sports Club and within a year, he madethe first division team. He was quickly off the mark with scores of 75 and 45 in his first two games, and against oppositions that included several Guyana national players and future West Indiescricketers.

One wonders what his cricketing career might have been had he not migrated with his family to theUSA before his nineteenth birthday. However, Guyana’s loss was Atlantis’s gain. When he arrived inthe USA, Desmond’s choice of club was simple: He just tagged along with his cousin Alvin Lloyd, anAtlantis honoree and former captain. Desmond was fortunate to join an unbeatable Atlantis team, populated by several ex-National players like Keith Cameron, Winston English, Carlyle Miller andthe late Vincent Mayers. Rubbing shoulders with these greats contributed to the rapid improvementin his batting, fielding and knowledge of the game. He scored the first ever century at the newHeckscher State Park cricket field. During the years that followed, Desmond established himself asa fearless, dependable, hard-hitting batsman and brilliant fieldsman. He scored many centuries in40-over competitions and was a very effective hitter in Six-a-Side competitions.

Desmond was elected captain of Atlantis around the turn of the century and enjoyed significantsuccess in that role; winning two 40-over competitions and three Six-a-Side tournaments in Hartford,Florida and Barbados. Although he has retired from the field, Desmond has continued to supportthe team with transportation, advice and anything he is called on to do.

Away from the club, Desmond spends time with his wife Donna and their teenage daughter Tiffany.

Atlantis proudly acknowledges the outstanding contributions of Desmond Alexander Thompson andbestow upon him Honorary Lifetime Membership.

2014 Club Honoree: William “Bill” White

1966 Atlantis Cricket Club New York 2014

William “Bill” White is another Atlantis standout who has been a member for almost 30 years. He is a rare talent who excels in any capacity as a cricketer – batting, bowling and fielding. Bill is honest and generous and has a wicked sense of humor. His presence, therefore, has always enhanced our activities on and off the field, especially on tours.

Bill was born in Guyana in 1953 and began playing clubcricket in the late 1960s at YMCA. The legendary Fred Wills, who was President of Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) at the time, recognized Bill’s potential and invited him to join DCC. So, in 1970 Bill took his first major step in a long and successful cricketing career, representing DCC until he emigrated in 1985. During that period, his accomplishments were numerous; representing Guyana’s Under-19 squad in 1971 and 1972; captaining DCC for several years and leading the team to three One-Day championships in four years and at least two league championships, while being one of the top performers with both bat and ball; playing professional cricket for Sheldon Cricket Club in England andPembroke Cricket Club in Ireland, in 1983 and 1984, respectively.

The highlight of Bill’s career, however, was playing for the Guyana national team; first in a final ofthe Regional one-day competition, followed in 1982 with his debut for Guyana in the first classformat. Knowledgeable people said his selection was long overdue. Highlights of his stint with theGuyana team include: a century against Jamaica at Sabina Park; and in his final game in 1985, fivewickets for 30 runs for the victorious Guyana team in the final of the Regional limited overscompetition, earning him the ‘Man-of-the-Match’ award.

In 1985 Bill relocated to the USA, joined Atlantis Cricket Club - NY and played for close to 25 years. He brought his brand of flair and dependability to the team, with outstanding contributions as abatsman and bowler. He scored many centuries and had numerous match-winning performanceswith the ball; gaining respect from his team-mates and opposition players alike. Bill captainedAtlantis for a few years and again displayed his leadership skills and knowledge of cricket by winningchampionships. He continues to contribute to cricket as a qualified umpire.

Bill’s wife, Jean is the sister of the great West Indies captain, Clive Lloyd, a past honoree of AtlantisCricket Club- NY.

It is with great pleasure, that Atlantis Cricket Club - NY bestows Honorary Lifetime Membership onWilliam “Bill” White.

This year marks the thirdyear since Atlantis CricketClub-NY (ACC) venturedinto the world of women'scricket. Fresh out of theICC Women's World CupQualifier in Bangladesh in2011, former USA and WestIndies player, JoanAlexander-Serranorecognized the need to

start a women’s team in an environment conduciveto the growth of her younger team-mates. Afterconsultation with a couple of senior players, sheproposed the start of a women's team to ACC.Atlantis accepted the proposal with open arms in2012, with Joan serving as the club’s first Women’sCricket Coordinator. The team participated in itsfirst tournament — the 2nd Annual Georgia WomenCricket Association (GWCA) Atlanta Women’s T20tournament, and convincingly won thechampionship.

In its first tournament, the ACC women's (ACCW)team fielded only ten players of which there werefour guest players and six core ACC players - JoanAlexander-Serrano, Joy Jones, Nadia Gruny, SaraFarooq, Neha Sukhija, and Sihle Wilson. ACCW wonthe tournament, and has won every tournament theteam has participated in since then, with anunbeaten string of victories. Most recently in Maythis year, the ACCW won the 4th Annual GWCAAtlanta Women’s T20 Championship for the thirdconsecutive time.

Today ACCW has a roster of 18 playing members, sixof whom have represented the USA internationally. With representation from more than six States in theUSA and a three-year history span; ACCW has beenproviding a platform for young and emergingwomen players from around the country toannounce themselves on the USA cricket scene. Mostwomen teams in the USA consist of workingprofessionals, but ACCW holds a secret weaponwhich attracts young players, particularly studentsattending universities.

The uptick in the number of women cricketers in the USAis slow around the country, but what is certain is thatAtlantis is contributing to that growth with fresh, newand young faces. With minimal cricket opportunities forwomen in the USA, Atlantis encourages participationwith all cricket initiatives by providing financial resources, and where possible, engages the expertise of professionalssuch as former West Indies assistant coach StephaniePower, and current West Indies vice-captain StafanieTaylor.

ACCW has also partnered with the Worldwide CricketAcademy Elite Women's Program — a programlaunched in 2014 to help the top players around thecountry prepare for international competition in the nextthree years — to host training sessions in New York. Morethan 10 ACCW players benefited from this program, witheight players recently participating in a developmenttour to Trinidad and Tobago, October 23-27, 2014.

The strides ACCW has been able to make and the levelof engagement it has been able to achieve with womencricketers nationwide is due largely to the solid homeprovided by the 48-year old New York cricket club. IfACC's track record of success is any indication of thepossibilities for women's cricket in the USA, then JoanAlexander-Serrano's vision for her younger teammatesmay very well yield exponential returns.

Nadia Gruny has captained Atlantis to two Women’s T20 championships

and has represented the USA at international women’s cricket.

An Itch: My Father, My Mother, Cricket and Me! By Kwesi Aaron

One bright summer Sunday at Heckscher State Park long ago, marked the beginning of a persistent itch. This itch, compliments of a deer tick, was acquired while standing among the thickness of the shrubbery and handling aprivate matter. That is one of my most vivid memories of cricket, at Heckscher State Park.

I managed to bring that inattentiveness along throughout Atlantis’ historic British Tour of 2004. There, I remember exploring the facilities where we stayed, and being held to mom’s strict, but rewarding itinerary thatsaw me through London and Paris in a couple of days. Over the years, the trip that brought me to the heart ofcricket’s origin has helped inform my understanding of the game. It is no wonder that the game played byupstanding gentlemen donning clean white kits is one approved by Her Majesty, The Queen.

Despite cricket’s regal appeal, I see it much like I see American football: Both are highly complicated spectacleswith confusing scoring systems, overwhelming terminology and fraternity-like teams. Besides the brutal gameplay, American football also diverges from cricket with the easiness to perceive their game situation throughbinary score reportage, and the visible proximity to the end zone (football’s goal). To gauge the situation in cricket, however, one must break down a complicated numerical expression of the score. I settled on observing the expressions of the Atlantis club administrators scoring the game, and made notes of either their gleeful banter or profanity-laced “teeth sucking”.

In what seemed like a joint effort to raise a true red-blooded Yankee, my mother tentatively exposed meto the Guyanese lingo of creolese, while my father remained unusually silent about his favorite game.In my late teenaged years, none other than the proud man himself regaled me with stories of hisillustrious career. But in childhood, he was mum, leaving me to pick up the star-spangledbat-and-ball sport, Baseball. I enjoyed being a part of my local baseball team, which allowed me to relate to the Atlantis players a bit more, as we all loved winning enough to shout for victory and hated losing, enough to sob “is me fault,” into a plate of post-game cook-up rice.

Over the course of my athletic tenure, I learned about sacrifice and glory in ways thatcontextualized my father’s own seeking, each summer weekend. I’ve grown fond ofcricket through aging and reflection. It makes perfect sense that dad, the math lover, could be so engrossed in run-rates and the opportunity/cost dynamic of chipping away with singles verses swinging for sixes out on the pitch. Even clearer, is the generational divide that has made my relationship with cricket so distant.

If I ask dad who were some all-time legends of the game, I’m given historicalnames like Clive Lloyd or Garfield Sobers - men about as old as Pelé. Is thereno changing of the guard, and no successive legends? Or is dad just out-of-date? Is cricket an aging sport or has my father failed to involve me in what could have been a great pastime?
