Terrified of student loan debt? Earn your bachelor’s degree at a community college. Nearly 70% of all bachelor’s degree recipients leave school with debt. College graduates in 2015, for example, amassed $35,000 in student debt on average, and one in four student borrowers are either in delinquency or default on their student loans. The growing student loan debt crisis is real.

As such, college-bound students, now more than ever, need to plan their education strategically with an eye towards saving money and cutting costs. In 2016, how you go to college is arguably more important than where you go to college. One of the best ways to save money is to complete two years at a community college, then transfer to a four-year university. This is traditional advice oft rehearsed by legions of career counselors, but still worth repeating. At a community college, you’ll pay a much lower rate of tuition. You’re also likely to enjoy smaller class sizes. And chances are your instructors will have more teaching experience than the graduate students and teaching assistants who often teach lower division courses at universities. (Which is not to disparage graduate students. I was one myself who taught intro courses at a top-tier land grant university.) Looking to amplify your savings even more? Stay on at a community college for all four years. Nearly half of US states now allow community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees and at the rate we’re going, this may become a nationwide practice in the not too distant future. Take Washington state. A whopping 22 of the state’s 34 community and technical colleges now offer Bachelor of Applied Science degrees targeting high-growth occupations in need of more qualified college grads. The goal? Help meet Washington’s ambitious goal for increasing the overall number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to 42,400 per year.

Small class sizes, as well as flexible day, evening, and online schedules, are key benefits to the community col-lege experience. There’s also the fact that Bachelor of Applied Science degrees are just that — “Applied”— which means students learn by doing. And of course, in sticking to this post’s overarching theme of saving money amidst the crippling student loan debt crisis, there’s cost. At Green River College for example, students who live in the Seattle-Tacoma region can earn a bachelor’s degree in Software Development, Network Administration & Security, Marketing & Entrepreneurship, Aeronautical Science, or Forest Resource Management at roughly half the cost of a state university. It’s no wonder, then, that bachelor’s degree enrollments are up 61% throughout Washington state’s community and technical college system, a trend that’s projected to continue over the next 10 years, and beyond. And that’s just Washington. 22 other states allow community colleges to award bachelor’s degrees and many administrators believe that number will grow. If there is a bleeding edge of innovation in higher education, this is it. Interestingly enough, college-bound students who are looking for ways to save money and cut costs aren’t the only ones who stand to benefit from the rise of applied baccalaureate degrees. Employers benefit too, especially those who are struggling to diversify their respective workforces. Why? Because community colleges — which are philosophically and pragmatically all about providing affordable access to a college education — are also magnets for under-served and under-represented minorities, career changers, as well as non-traditional and first-generation college students. Community colleges, in other words, are where the diversity is. And with more and more community colleges offering bachelor’s degrees, we’re talking about exceedingly diverse pipelines of local baccalaureate talent that employers can tap into without having to hire out of state or overseas. Employers and college-bound students alike, take note. Look to your local community college, home of the new four-year degree.

Muckleshoot Casino in Auburn, Washington Officially cer fied by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS! Muckleshoot Casino’s 21st anniversary celebration on April 30 with a record-breaking event – the world’s largest slot tournament. Officially certified by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS, the historic designation was captured during the kick-off of Everi’s 2016 TournEvent of Champions.

“This is a thrilling honor not just for Muckleshoot Casino, but for the incredible 3,173 players who hold this record with us equally,” said Conrad Granito, General Manager of Muckleshoot Casino. “Their spirited enthusiasm, combined with the exhilarating fun of Everi’s TournEvent of Champions, created a winning combination.”

An official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator verified the accomplishment after a more than

13-hour period. Participation in

the history-making event, which

awarded more than $100,000 in cash and prizes,

was free to guests 21 and older.

The tournament’s top finisher,

Benigno T. of Federal Way, Wa., received $21,000 in cash and a four-night trip to Las Vegas to compete for a chance to win $1 million* in Everi’s TournEvent of Champions championship event on September 28, 2016.

“We’ve held hundreds of TournEvent of Champions slot tournaments over the past five years, but this one was definitely the most memorable and the perfect way to kick off this year’s campaign,” added Linda Trinh, Everi Vice President of Marketing & Promotions. “We are proud to be a part of this historic event and want to thank Muckleshoot Casino, as well as all the players, who helped make this our biggest TournEvent of Champions tournament to date.”

“A Pacific Northwest Treasure” The Auburn Symphony


Founded in 1996, The Auburn Symphony has been entertaining this region for the past 20 years. with the

orchestra ranging from 65‐70 members (45 of which come from the Pacific Northwest Ballet) has gained

much acclaim in the region under the guidance of the founding Conductor and Musical Director, Stewart

Kershaw, who in October of 2015 announced his re rement. Now the search is on for a new permanent

conductor for the Auburn Symphony.

The Auburn Performing Arts Center is home to the ensemble and with a new season of programs set

to start this fall.

To kick off the 20th anniversary October 9th, the symphony will have a special guest

conductor and musical director, Nic Hersh presen ng Various Rhapsodies including

Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

The symphony will play host to a list of guest conductors audi oning for the vacant

roll, with the audi ons wrapping up October 2017. Sunday a ernoons at 2:30pm is

when you can experience the full orchestra beginning in October and ending in April.

During the summer months, you can catch smaller ensemble performances.

For the 4th year Mary Olson Farm will present a small musical group of 4‐5

members during the summer, presen ng a picturesque family venue to enjoy an evening picnic. July 7th

kicks off the summer series and August 4th is the Carnival of the Animals event, a fun and interac ve

evening perfect for the li le ones.

St. Mathews Episcopal Church also hosts Sunday Chamber performances in November and January. St.

Mathews provides wonderful ambiance for the chamber performances.

Since its incep on, the Auburn Symphony has been a first

rank ensemble in the state of Washington, and with such a

variety of venues and performances it would be hard to ig‐

nore the majesty that is the Auburn Symphony Orchestra. So

we encourage you to take advantage of such a gem right in

our own backyard.
