Why AES standards?Systems use products from multiple manufacturers Need to work predictably and reliably Define interoperability Business-enabling technology

AES standards are respected in the audio community

Why IEC standards? IEC, like ISO, publish International Standards

Have special status in the global economy Respected as legitimate by the WTO when cited in

international purchase agreements Local Standards may be seen as a “non-tariff

barrier” to trade and be challenged

Why IEC standards? IEC standards are respected by a wider range of

purchasers beyond the audio community IEC standards will be relevant for larger

contracts both locally and internationally

Where an AES standard is seen to be valuable within the audio industry, it makes sense to propose it for International Standardization to broaden its effectiveness

Why AES standards as well as IEC?

AES standards work is performed by volunteers, supported by their employers

IEC standards work is performed by individuals proposed by their National Committees (NC) Different countries have different rules and costs for

participation, and some countries do not have active NCs in audio

Why AES standards as well as IEC?

Individuals that produce and maintain an AES standard would not likely tolerate the duplication of process and costs needed for participation in their NC as well

AES standards should be maintained and revised within the AES, as that is where the expertise lies

The output of AES working groups should be offered to the IEC where appropriate
