AUGSBURG SCORES WILD WIN AT CONCORDIA-WISCONSIN: Quarterback Ayrton Scott (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) accounted for 504 yards of total offense, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for four scores, leading Augsburg in a 55-45 victory at Concordia-Wiscon-sin on Sept. 13.

Scott rushed 28 times for a career-high 232 yards and four touchdowns, including an 82-yard score with 20 seconds left in the game to seal the win. He also had an eight-yard touchdown in the second quarter and rushed for nine- and three-yard scores in the fourth quarter.

Scott completed 22-of-35 passing for 272 yards and three touchdowns, including two scores to Hunter Friesen (FY, Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) -- a 23-yarder in the first quarter and a 33-yarder in the second quarter. Scott also threw an 11-yard score to Scott Bossard (JR, North Branch, Minn.) in the third quarter.

Augsburg had its biggest lead at 20-7 early in the second quarter, but the game ended up being a back-and-forth struggle after that, with six lead changes, all in the second half. The Auggies took the lead for good when Scott scored his three-yard touchdown with 2:56 left to play, giving the Auggies a 49-45 lead.

Jerise Washington (SR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) rushed 24 times for 178 yards for the Auggies, including a two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He also caught three passes for 19 yards.

Defensively, Isiah Malone (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) had nine tackles (eight solo), whille Khoa Nguyen (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had six tackles (four solo) and a sack, and Denzel Anderson (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had six tackles (four solo). Bryce Nelson (JR, New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) also had six tackles (three solo).

Felix Coleman (SR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) recorded eight tackles (seven solo), had a pass break-up and a crucial interception with 46 seconds left in the fourth quarter, stopping Concordia-Wisconsin’s final chance for a go-ahead score at the Augsburg 8-yard line.

LAST YEAR -- AUGSBURG RALLIES FOR 19-16 WIN OVER GUSTIES: Phil Putratz scored on a 46-yard screen pass from Ayrton Scott with 2:37 left to play, lifting Augsburg to a 19-16, come-from-behind victory over Gustavus on Sept. 21, 2013 at Edor Nelson Field. Augsburg drove 78 yards on four plays in 51 seconds for the eventual game-winning drive, including a 21-yard pass from Scott to Joey Sonnenfeld and a 12-yard run by Scott.

Gustavus took the ball at its own 41-yard line following a 35-yard kickoff return by Matt Boyce, but on the first play from scrimmage, Augsburg’s Felix Coleman forced a fumble by Gustavus running back Jeffrey Dubose, which Marques Townsend recovered with 2:24 left. Augsburg then converted a first down on a fourth-and-one, two-yard rush by Scott, and was able to run out the clock.

Gustavus held the lead most of the game, primarily behind the rushing of Dubose, who gained 227 yards on 37 carries, scoring two touchdowns -- a two-yard run in the first quarter that capped a nine-play, 91-yard drive, and a 12-yard run in the third quarter that capped a nine-play, 68-yard drive to give the Gusties a 16-6 advantage. The 37 carries tied a Gustavus single-game school record for rushes.

But Augsburg scored the last 13 points of the contest to capture the MIAC win. With 5:52 left in the third quarter, Sonnenfeld caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Scott, capping a nine-play, 75-yard drive. The drive included a 45-yard screen pass from Scott to Putratz.

Augsburg’s defense forced the Gusties to punt on its next three possessions, the last giving the Auggies the ball on their own 22-yard line with 3:28 left for the eventual game-winning drive.

Defensively, Augsburg linebacker Michael Juberian recorded 18 tackles (five solo), while Coleman had 10 tackles (six solo), 1.5 tackles-for-loss and an interception. For Gustavus, Cameron Cropsey recorded eight tackles (four solo), including three tackles-for-loss, and had an interception.

ABOUT GUSTAVUS (Information from Gustavus athletic website: www.gustavus.edu/athletics): Gustavus improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2007 with a 48-19 win over Hamline last Saturday at Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter, Minn.

Junior quarterback Mitch Hendricks (JR, Laporte, Minn.) threw four touchdown passes for the second straight weekend and completed 31-of-43 passes on his way to setting a new school-record for passing yards in a game with 443. Hendricks earned MIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season with his 443-yard passing effort. Hendricks became just the second quarterback in program history to surpass the 400-yard mark in a game. The former record was held by Dean Kraus ’89 and set in 1985 when he torched Bethel for 403 yards.

The junior connected with seven different receivers throughout the course of the afternoon and finished just two completions shy of Gustavus’s single-game record. His top two targets were Gabriel Boyce (Jr., Excelsior, Minn.) and Matt Boyce (Jr., Excelsior, Minn.) who combined for 18 catches and a total of 199 yards. Matt Boyce caught two of his touchdown strikes, while both Boyce twins brought in season-long grabs of 40 yards.

Through the opening three games of the 2014 season, Gustavus boasts the fifth-ranked passing offense in the nation and is averaging 44.7 points per game (12th/NCAA). On an individual level, Hendricks leads NCAA Division III with a completion percentage of 76.8-percent (86-112) and is averaging 28.7 completions per game (6th/NCAA). He ranks third in passing touchdowns (13) and passing yards (1,080), fourth in passing efficiency (196.1), and fifth in passing yards per game (360). He is responsible for an average of 28 points per game (4th/NCAA) and an average of 371 yards of total offense (5th/NCAA).
