MUD AND SAND.

THE 2003 SIMPSON DESERT EXPEDITION.

The Spring Creek Delta is a large flat area of a few hundred Km with vegetationvarying from grass to low scrub. Being low lying the whole area is prone to flooding.We traversed long straight sections of road where we could hum along at 100Kphinterspersed with boggy sections and sheets of water covered road .Any attempt toleave the road was at the drivers peril, as it was only the wheel tracks that had driedout. After forty minutes, we were stopped by a large lake, over a Kilometre across.This was the dreaded deep-water crossing. Through binoculars, I could see anapproaching convoy and I watched fascinated, as the lead vehicle plunged into thewater. The water was deep all right, and by the number of expletives coming from hisUHF, we could tell he was exceeding the recommended wading depth of his liftedLand Cruiser. Eventually he stopped on a small island half way across to await thesecond vehicle. This one was not so lucky and stopped in deep water. As the recoverywas taking ages and our party were getting nervous at the prospect of taking theplunge I decided to try something. I had noticed a set of wheel tracks 500 Metresbefore heading south .It was risky leaving the road as it was quite boggy in placesbut we decided if we kept an eye on the wheel tracks, we could judge the conditionof the road ahead. The others waited while we followed the tracks, which woundback and forth, at first over some very bumpy drying mud, then through low scrub.We were getting further and further away from the road but eventually the tracksslowly turned in the right direction. We couldn’t see the road through the scrub aswe wound round and over bushes. Then much to our relief we broke through to theroad a Kilometre west of the hazard. When I radioed our party that we had found away around I could hear the cheers of relief in the background.

The next thirty Km was rough with long sections of wheel ruts and high mudcrowns. We were only 10 Km out from our destination of Dalhousie Springswhen we came across a Holden Rodeo stopped in the middle of a creekcrossing. He had a flat battery after coming all the way from Big Red with abroken alternator .The crossing was surrounded by mud so we sent Peter inthe Patrol around the crossing through the mud to jump-start the Rodeo. Asit turned out we had been shadowing the Rodeo all the way from Birdsvilleand it was his tracks we followed to bypass the deep water. When we arrivedat Dalhousie Springs and set up camp people came over and asked us the

condition of the track. Only then did we realize that we were the first convoyto cross the desert since the rain.

One of the first things we noticed as we settled into the campsite was abrand new Land Cruiser being unloaded off the back of a tilt tray truck. Itturned out to be a Hertz rental vehicle to replace one, which had been rolledtwo days before with a mere 450 Kilometres on the clock. As soon as wesettled in we walked the 200 Metres to the springs for a dip. Climbing downthe ladder in the chilly late afternoon and lowering oneself into the water isdefinitely a highlight of the trip. Your body is expecting cool water but it islike a warm bath. In that moment as you settle in to wash off the desert dustyou feel it was worth driving all that way just to float in this pool. Despite thecampsite being relatively crowded, usually there are not too many people inthe pool, and often you have it to yourself. Peter Gates and Elaine werenowhere to be seen but they were located next day waiting for us at Mt Darestation. They were now on the homeward leg of a massive trans Australiatrip involving Perth the Kimberley’s, Alice Springs and now the Simpson.

On the way back from the refuelling stop at Mt Dare Rob had a worryingtime when an engine management light came on in the new Prado. Theywere also losing their odometer and Speedo at times. They returned to MtDare but could find nothing wrong. These problems dogged them throughoutthe rest of the trip and were eventually put down to electrical problems dueto water. Back at Dalhousie we decided to weld a bracket so we could refitRobins sump guard. We had two batteries joined together and I was about tostart welding with a piece of welders glass taped to a XXXX box when PeterGates came over and said ‘John, there is an eye surgeon over there if youneed him.’ And he was not joking as over at the next camp was the recipientof the replacement Land Cruiser none other than the tall figure of Mark Loane,surgeon and ex rugby international. As two batteries joined did not giveenough penetration, we hooked up a third. This worked well and in all we didabout 600mm of weld with good penetration and without flattening thebatteries. Then Andrew Cox drilled some holes with his excellent newPanasonic cordless, the guard was refitted, and at the time of writing, it isstill there. trip’). That night our complete team of seven vehicles celebrated around afire. The turning point of the trip as of tomorrow would take us eastboundtowards the Rig Road.

Next day we were away by 9am intending to retrace our steps across the Delta, pastPurnie Bore then turn off down the Rig road. After only 30 Km, we struck trouble. Iwas in the lead when Robin reported smoke pouring out of one of my wheel arches.It turned out to be some claggy mud jammed between the wheel and the spring seatthis was the culmination of a problem, which had been bugging me the whole trip. Istarted the trip with 7mm of clearance between the tyre and the bottom of the springseat of the new KYB struts. But now, probably because of the heavy load and vibrationthe clearance had shrunk to 2mm. I cleared the mud with a knife, fortunately, for therest of the trip the clearance stabilised at a mere 2mm, and there was no reoccurrenceof the problem. Peter Gates was also having clearance problems with the 13 inchwheeled L series on the very high crowned tracks.

As the convoy travelled down the Rig road Peter’s luck started to run out. He andElaine had just completed a rugged 12,000 Km outback circuit of Australia. Apartfrom some tyre problems in the Kimberley the faithful L series had not missed abeat. Then his antenna broke off, followed by the roof mounted tent pole holdercoming adrift. A half hour later Peter discovered a torn CV boot. Robin crawledunderneath and made a serviceable repair out of rubber mat and duct tape. To capoff a bad day his swing away spare wheel holder broke off. Despite these delays, westill made good enough time to camp not far from our target of the Lone Gum. Bynow eight days after the rain, we were starting to see the desert at it’s mostspectacular. At present, it looked anything but a desert. As far as the eye could seewas vegetation of various shades of green with a hint of the red sand between.Scattered throughout the grasses were thousands of colourful wildflowers. This wasone of our typical desert camps with a handy dune to walk up to watch the sunsetand plenty of wood for Julie’s camp oven.

Next day we started out and it was not long before we came upon a southboundconvoy who gave us a good report of the road ahead to Poeppel corner. We reachedthe Lone Gum after about ten minutes and Bev commented on a strange noise fromher auto Forester. After a test drive we concluded it was a transmission noise andwe would get it checked in Birdsville. By lunchtime, the convoy reached a T-junction.We had reached the K1 line. here to follow the track to Warburton Creek and the Birdsville Track. Therefore,after goodbyes the rest of the convoy turned north along the K1 line. The K1line was an interesting change as we were travelling parallel to the dunes.This virtually doubled our average speed; our camp that night was about fortyKm from Poeppel and it was situated a hundred metres off the road in a groveof trees surrounded by grasses and wildflowers. Next morning we sped up theK1 line and we made Poeppel corner by 11am. We ran into a few convoys here,as it is a crossroads with tracks approaching from four directions. By lunchtimewe were heading east again having a UHF conversation with members of aconvoy just in front. They were both towing trailers and after following, themfor an hour it looked like a hard way to go. That night’s camp near Eyre Ck wasour last desert camp as we hoped to be in Birdsville by lunch next day. Andrew’sHF radio came in useful here, as Lesley had heard her mother was very sickwhen she was at Dalhousie and had been worried ever since. After a rad phonecall she was informed her mother was much better.

At 10am the next day we were all staring at Big Red from the west. This is theharder crossing of the dune and the sand had time to dry out. As we droppedour tyre pressures Peter Rice announced he was attempting to take his Patrolover without dropping tyre pressure, after all he had come this far with only aminimal drop in pressure. (He was on 26 psi) So we watched him wend his wayaround the mud puddles and start the climb. He almost made it. As he nearedthe top and did the left turn the Patrol seemed to bog down. Next I could seesmoke coming the tyres, an unusual occurrence on sand. Finally, he admitteddefeat and backed down. Next, he tried in a lower gear but didn’t get as far asthe first time. As he backed down, he said he would let his tyres down and givesomeone else a go. Justin was behind the wheel of the Forester with 14 psi inthe tyres and was watching with excitement and nervous anticipation. So whenI said to go for it he shot off up the hill. At first gear, low range and 5000 rpmthe Forester easily crested the dune and he triumphantly circled round to parkon the edge. Next came Andrew and family in the L series .He red lined it upand made it over easily and came over to join the Forester. Bev’s sister Roswas driving her Forester and she took Julie’s instructions literally to ‘Lock it infirst gear and don’t take your foot off the floor till you are over.’ She was airborneover the first bump and we could hear Bev cheering her on from inside the caras she came over the top. Then Peter finally made it over after reducing histyre pressures. Marion came over next in her auto Forester completingunfinished business, as she could not coax it

over last year. Jan was last to attempt in the new Prado. The Prado neededabout four attempts to get up mainly due to its lack of clearance. We brieflychatted to a Swiss couple that were watching from the top then made our wayto Birdsville 30km away.

The mechanic at Birdsville checked Bev’s Forester but could not locate thesource of the noise from the transmission. By now Robin’s auto Forester wasmaking a similar noise. We said goodbye to Andrew, Wendy and family here asthey were off to Boulia. After a shower and lunch, we all headed east. Peter andLesley were keen to get home so they were taking the direct route via Charleville,while the rest of us would visit Innamincka.

As soon as we turned south towards Arrabury, we realized it would be a tryingdrive. The roads were still chopped up from the rains and hadn’t seen a grader soit was slow rough going. The country is very bare in this region so we consideredourselves lucky to find a reasonable campsite on a small creek not far from theHaddon corner turnoff. The road improved next day as we continued south and itwas here that Robin suffered a puncture, his first in 70,000 km with the Coopers.Innamincka is a small very busy crossroad town. Most of the activity centresaround the ‘town square’ consisting of the pub, store and shower block. Theparking area was crowded with 4X4s of all makes and sizes. Petrol was $1.20,dearer than Birdsville and as we waited clouds of dust would envelop us .It wasan interesting frontier style town but after Robin’s tyre was repaired we couldn’twait to leave town and check out the Cullyamurra waterhole. Situated 10km outof town the waterhole is a large camping area fronting a large reach of theCoopers Creek. After lunch, we proceeded east towards our campsite withinsight of the Bellara gas field processing facility. The thousands of lights fromthis plant made a weird backdrop to our camp that night. Next day we were offat 9.30am after we changed a tyre that had gone flat in the middle of the night.We hoped to make it somewhere around St George that day.

I don’t have much to report this month. I am putting this magazine together,and watching the Olympics at the same time, so there could be a few moremistakes than usual.

Bollon the lead party seemed to stay right at the edge of our UHF reception. Itwas 3pm and we were driving on a long straight 20 km east of Bollon when wecould see something in the middle of the road. As we got closer, we realized itwas an accident. Then Justin said ‘it’s Bev!’ And there was Bev’s Forester lyingon it’s side blocking the road, a total write off. Rob’s Prado was parked besidethe road and Bev and Ros were walking around looking stunned. Bev cameover and said ‘Everyone is OK’. While we waited for the tow truck we transferredBev and Ros along with some of their gear to Rob’s Prado .He took them to StGeorge for the night. As it was dark now we decided to camp at the crash siteand load the rest of the gear from their car on to the two remaining Forestersnext day. Fortunately, we found an ideal camp just 50 metres off the road inthe forest. We sat around the fire that night with mixed feelings trying to takein what had just happened. It seemed Ros was driving when it wandered on tothe verge and the resulting corrections initiated a series of fishtails ending in arollover. Then while we were huddled round the fire there was a flash of lightand a loud rumble of thunder. Soon the rain came down and we took shelter inthe tents. As it eased off, we donned raincoats and stood around the remainingembers of the fire for what seemed like hours. We were too hyped up to sleepas we reflected on the bizarre end to our trip.

HOMEHOMEHOMEHOMEHOMEWe managed to squeeze the extra gear on to the two Foresters and were onthe road by 9.30am .It was a thankfully uneventful day as the Ks rolled beneaththe cars. St George, Goondwindi, Warwick all came and went until finally at4pm the Foresters pulled into our driveway at Jimboomba.

POSPOSPOSPOSPOSTTTTTSCRIPTSCRIPTSCRIPTSCRIPTSCRIPT

The trip lasted a total of 16 days, three days more than planned. 4500 km wasthe distance travelled. The convoy had three punctures in total and a fewmechanical problems. The transmission noise which was evident in Robin’s(and Bev’) auto Forester’s turned out to be a very expensive front diff noise.While traversing the vast sheets of mud and water, the auto Foresters managedto inhale water through their front diff breathers. Everyone totally enjoyed thetrip, especially the newcomers. Bev has since brought a replacement 2002Forester. Andrew and Wendy Cox continued to tour arriving home in Victoriaover a month later. Everyone wants to know ‘When are we doing the next trip?’

It was a patchy event for the Subaruteam with Petter Solberg not finishing after damaging his car’s front bodyworkand engine in the deep-water crossings, it happened 2 times. Because of thenewer front deeper air dam for better aerodynamics the front of the car duginto the water too much and caused the damage. Teammate Mikko Hirvonen’scar did not have this problem and he finished in 4th place his highest positionso far. The event winner was Citroen’s Carlos Sainz, who became the mostsuccessful WRC driver of all time with 26 wins. Also Ford’s Marko Martin andhis co driver walked away from a massive 174km/hour accident after hittinga rock on a crest. He put the blame down to the new rule of not having gravelnote crews that do check before the start of each stage.

Positions – 1 Sainz Citroen, 2 Loeb Citroen, 3 Duval Ford, 4 Hirvonen Subaru,5 Rovanera Peugeot.Points – Loeb 61, Solberg 44, Sainz 34, Martin 34, Gronholm 32.Manufacturers — Citroen 98, Ford 71, Subaru 64, Peugeot 51, Mitsubishi 14.

ARC – Rally South Australia – Rd 4 – The South Australian round is held onshire and forestry roads around the Barossa Valley. The weather conditionschanged starting out fine but became wet and foggy. It was a good event forSubaru, with the Atkinson brothers winning outright. After the finish theywent straight to the airport to fly to Finland for their drive in a Group N ImprezaWRX, in the Rally of Finland. Team Subaru’s Cody Crocker has increased hislead in the series with a 4th place outright, while team mate Dean Herridgefollowed in 5th place. The Mitsubishi team of Juha Kangas liked the conditionsand won heat 1, but suffered gearbox problems during heat 2. His teammateEd Ordynski finished well in 3rd outright. Toyota’s Simon Evans was passed fitenough to drive after fracturing his femur in the last round. He was out earlywith a head casket problem in heat 1, and overall finished in 8th outright. Inthe Subaru RS Challenge Queensland’s John Goasdoue was leading in bothheats but had big offs in the slippery conditions. This allowed WesternAustralian driver Darren Windus an outright win, he now leads the series. Inthe Privateer’s Cup Subaru driver Brad Goldsmith won, and also increased his

Positions – 1 Atkinson Subaru, 2 Kangas Mitsubishi, 3 Ordynski Mitsubishi,4 Crocker Subaru, 5 Herridge Subaru.Points – Crocker 108, Kangas 92, Herridge 86, Atkinson 84, Evans 83.

WRC – Rally of Finland – Rd 9 – This famous rally is known for its high speedand big jumps. Again it was not a good event for the Subaru team while settingthe early pace, Petter Solberg was suffering from the flu, he lost concentrationand slid into a ditch and damaged the suspension and was out. TeammateMikko Hirvonen who was running in 5th place, also when out with an accident.The Queensland crew of the Atkinson brothers competed in a Tommi Makinenprepared Group N Impreza. They started out well and gained attention, settingthe 2nd fastest time on the first stage. After that they had 2 flat tyres, andother problems with the turbo boost, manifold and centre diff. They stillmanaged to battle on and finish in 7th place in Group N, and 33rd outright. Thepacesetters were the Peugeot team with Marcus Gronholm winning. Ford’sMarko Martin finished in 2nd place after making a good recovery from his bigaccident in Argentina. The Skoda team impressed they only have a limitedWRC programme, and all 3 cars finished, with Jan Paasonen in 6th place.

New 05 models – Some of the main changes to the new 05 models that arebeing released this month are, the flat 6 is now available in the Liberty sedanin 2 versions auto and manual. The manual is called the 3.0R- B Spec with180kw, bilstien suspension, 18”alloy rims, and a 13 speaker McIntosh soundsystem. The 190kw Turbo Liberty GT now has a version of the STI based 6speed manual transmission available as an option. Also the braked towingrate has been increased to 1800 kg. The safety aspect has been increasedacross the whole range with 4 air bags fitted as standard equipment, dualfront and front side, all without a price increase. All models now have theANCAP 5 star safety rating. For the first time the higher spec models havecurtain side air bags fitted. Also some models are slightly cheaper. The Foresterand Impreza ranges receive some small upgrades too, again 4 air bags arestandard as a no extra cost item. The Forester XT braked towing capacity hasbeen increased to 1800 kg.

Another lap record – In perfect track conditions Scorpion Subaru’s Mike Collinsdriving his well set up WRX STI 2 door at the MT Cotton hillclimb circuit, loweredhis previous lap record of 45.76 to 44.5 on 3 consecutive runs. He is now theoutright leader of the series by 1 point, and is the fastest road registered car.

Updating – Last month Bruce and Pam Ottway purchased a silver one ownerMY 99 Liberty GX sedan from Highway Subaru at Springwood who are SubaNews advertisers and Club supporters, who now sponsor the Club’s HighwaySubaru Shield.

Getting setup – New Club Member Dane Allison who is a friend of Mark Ottwayand Scot Kerrisk, is slowly setting up his white 89 series 1 auto Liberty wagon.So far a lift kit has been fitted along with new struts and springs and 15”Forester rims.

Tassie bound – In September Auto John and Val Schliff plan to do a 2 weektour of Tasmania the holiday isle, in their well set up 99 Outback, in theirhome away from home Camp a matic camping trailer. While there John plansto do a spot of fishing so the trailer has been setup to carry an alloy tinny boatthat is easily loaded on by a small crane.

One sold another bought – With his 98 series 1 Outback sold to Rik Close’sgirlfriend Chris Moore on a Wednesday. Keith Peters on the following dayThursday spotted a well priced white 01 H6 Outback in the Trading Post andbought it. His overall plan is to transfer all the gear, lift kit, front and rearbars, and sump guard over from his 00 Outback. Now this machine will beused on the mail run, as the Forester GT is not quite big enough in the cargoarea. The Forester is now for sale. With the H6 set up, he enjoyed the recent3X4X4X20 trip so much he plans to do a similar trip starting from Saturday4th September. Missed by a few days – In June Don Watt and Maureen travelling the longway to Cooktown in their well setup Brumby, called in to Haddon corner andsigned the visitors book, during the week before the 3X4X4X20 crew arrivedthere. Their signature was on the page before, and was not spotted by the3X4X4 X20 crew.
