Fifteen seminarians from the College Department of St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary were invested with Cassock

and Surplice on the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Blessed Virgin Mary last August 15, 2015 at the Seminary’s Main Chapel.

Fourteen investees came from the Second Year College (Class Mysterion) namely Dennis Abalorio from the Parish of Sta. Barbara; Kyle Francis Amamanglon from the Parish of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, Lapaz, Iloilo City; Rhett Alvin Bastareche from the Parish of Immaculate Conception, Concepcion, Iloilo; Jay Mark Capanang from the Parish of St. Catherine of Alexandria, Leon, Iloilo; John Eduard Daquel

August 24, 2015, Monday, marked the visit of the 51st International Eucharistic Congress Symbol here

in the Archdiocese of Jaro. A Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was concelebrated by around twenty priests of the different vicariates and the Archbishop, Most Reverend Angel N. Lagdameo, D.D., as the main celebrant. His homily started with the life of St. Bartholomew who was instrumental in the conversion of Polymius, the King of Armenia, which angered the King’s brother, Astyages,

Iloilo; and Andro Terre from the Parish of St. John of Sahagun,Tigbauan, Iloilo; and one came from the Special Philosophy Department in the person of Louie John Ninian from the Parish of St. John the Baptist, Banate, Iloilo.

The Mass was presided by Most Rev. Angel N. Lagdameo, D.D, Archbishop of Jaro with the concelebrating priest-formators and the parish priests or parochial vicars of the newly invested seminarians.

On the night before the investiture, a solemn evening prayer was held in the main chapel presided by Rev. Fr. Domingo Rafael A. Alimajen, Jr., the Animator of Class Mysterion.

This year´s Investiture of Cassock and Surplice is focused on the theme, “That they may see” (Luke 18:41).

of the forthcoming International Eucharistic Congress. This is the replica of the chapel in Cebu which contained the Magellan Cross as a sign of the conversion of the 1st Cebuanos to Christianity. He explained that this occasion is not a simple one but a good opportunity to remind ourselves to live the faith our forefathers from the beginning has lived. We must strive to resurrect this faith again in our life, in our parish and communities.

The Cathedral was full of delegates coming from the different parishes, vicariates, as well as religious men and women who actively participated in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

After the Mass, Fr. Julius Almeria acknowledged and thanked the Archbishop, the concelebrants, the different delegates of the vicariates of Jaro Archdiocese and the students of universities and colleges and religious congregations. Catechesis followed until the afternoon session.

Sin-o ang Sarang Mangin Pari?

Sa isa ka faith-sharing nga akon natambungan, nabatyagan kag naeksperyensiyahan ko gid kon daw

ano ka gamhanan sang Pulong sang Dios, kon paano ang Pulong sang Dios maghatag sang kabuhi kag kapawa kag kon paano bag-uhon sang Pulong sang Dios ang kabuhi sang mga tumuluo nga nagabasa, nagapamati kag nagapamalandong sini.

May mag-asawa nga nagatambong sang faith sharing. Indi lang ang asawa ukon indi lang ang bana, kundi, duha gid sila ang naghatag sang ila panahon para sa Ginoo sa faith-sharing. Sang nagapamalandong na ang tanan sang Pulong nga ang tema amo ang aton pagkamakasasala kag kon paano ang aton sala makaapekto sa iban ilabi na gid sa aton mga hinigugma sa kabuhi, ang asawa

nagpaambit sang iya mga kakulangan sa iya bana bangud sang iya mga sala nga nahimo kag nagpangayo sia sing patawad. Matuod gid nga ang Pulong sang Dios may gahum sa pagbag-o sa aton! Kabay pa nga pakamahalon sang mga katapo sang aton mga Magagmay nga Kristianong Katilingban ang faith-

2. Ang Seminaryo Mayor – Ang Pormasyon Espiritwal

Sa nagligad nga isyu, akon gintalakay ang nahauna nga sahi sang pag-aman para sa pagkapari – ang academic education ukon ang pag-angkon sang ihibalo nahanungod sa mga bagay nga may kaangtanan sa ministeryo sang isa ka pari.

Ang ikaduha amo ang Spiritual Formation. Kon sa bagay, kinahanglanon gid sang tanan ini nga sahi sang pormasyon kag indi lang sang manugpari. Sa bahin sang isa ka seminarista, ini nga sahi sang pormasyon amo gid ang iya ginatutokan sa sulod sang apat tubtob anum ka tuig sang iya pagtener sa seminaryo mayor.

Ano ang katuyuan sang sini nga sahi sang pormasyon? Ini nga pormasyon nagatuyo sa pagdihon sa seminarista nga mag-ilog sa kabuhi kag kabubut-on ni Kristo. Para sa isa ka seminarista nga sa pila ka adlaw magatindog dira sa altar, bilang persona ni Kristo, sa paghalad sang iya Lawas kag Dugo, ini nga sahi sang pormasyon may iya nga pinasahi nga kahulogan. Sa pinasahi nga paagi ginatawag sia sa paghiusa sa pag-antus ni Jesus. Ang Seminaryo Mayor amo ang lugar kag tiempo sa diin mahanas ang seminarista sa sini nga sahi sang kabuhi.

Wala labot sa pagtuon sang Teolohiya, diri sa Seminaryo Mayor ginahatag sa seminarista ang pormasyon nga nagadihon sa iya sa kabug-osan sang iya pagkatawo, kag nagadihon sa iya bilang “pastor” ukon manugbantay. Ang ginatawag nga “human formation” nagahanas sa seminarista agud nga ang iya pagginawi kag pagpakigbagay sa iban nga tawo mangin isa ka huwaran sang isa nga nakahibalo sang tawhanon nga kinaiya, sang kaluya kag kusog sang isa ka tinuga sang Dios. Ang seminarista nagakabuhi upod sa pareho niya nga seminarista sa isa ka komunidad kag nagatinguha nga maangkon ang espiritu sang pagpangalagad sa iban. Nagapaidalom sia sa pagdumala sang iya mga formators.

Sa sini nga paagi, iya ginapaidalom ang iya kaugalingon sa Dios, kag ini nagakinahanglan sang padayon nga pagpangamuyo kag padayon nga pagsunod sang kabubut-on sang mga ginatugyanan sa pagdihon sa iya. Ini nagalakip sang pagdisiplina sa iya kaugalingon nga iya ginapakita paagi sa pagsunod sa mga pagsulondan kag tulomanon sang Seminaryo. Dapat sia mangin mapainubuson agud nga, paagi sini, makita niya sing maathag ang iya kaugalingon nga kusog kag kaluya, kag mapaisog niya kag masakdag ang iban, mapatawad niya ang mga nakasayop

Para sa mga Pilipino nga kaparian, ang Ikaduha nga Konsilyo Plenaryo sang Pilipinas nagahatag sang pila ka panugyan para sa Pormasyon Espiritwal sang seminarista. Ini nga pormasyon dapat: 1) nakapanggamot kag nasentro kay Kristo; 2) napatungod sa pagpangalagad ukon serbisyo; 3) nasagod sa kabuhi sang komunidad; 4) ginakabuhi sa espiritu sang mga laygay sang ebanghelyo, nga amo ang mga birtud sang pagkamatinumanon, pagkaputli kag pagka-imol; 5) misyonero; 6) nasandig sa Eukaristiya, kag 7) napaidalom sa debosyon kay Maria.

Sang gin-assign ako ni Msgr. Gamboa sang una sa seminario, ginhimo niya

ako nga Prefect of Discipline. Sa tanan nga mga pari sa seminario amo ini sia ang ginakahadlukan sang mga kabataan kay sia ang manug-disiplina. Sa pagkamatuod gintawag ako ni Msgr. Gamboa nga “Inspector” kag gani mga kaparian nagtawag man sa akon nga “SP01” – pulis. Siguro nakita nila sa akon madamol nga mga kilay kag sa akon pagkaburingot nga angayan gid ako sa sina nga role. Gani for the next 11 years nangin Prefect of Discipline ako sang seminario. Pero ang natingalahan ko lang amo sini. Bisan matuod nga ginakahadlukan ako sa seminario, kag kadamo sa mga nasakitan sing buot tungod sa akon, may madamo ako nga abyan nga mga seminarista nga nag-alagi sa seminario. Ako ang nagakasal sa ila kon magguwa sila, ako ang nagabunyag sang ila kabataan, ako man ang ginatawag mag-blessing. Ang partner ko nga prefect nga sa pagkatunog magsinggit nga kon kaisa nagapapulaw sa ila bilang punishment, wala nagapapuli sa ila kon makasala sila, in fact ang

6Nagsabat si Jesus, “Husto gid ang pagtagna ni Isaias nahanungod sa inyo nga mga hipokrito. Kay ginsulat niya: Ginpadunggan ako sini nga mga tawo paagi sa ila mga bibig. Apang ang ila tagipusoon malayo sa akon. 7Wala sing pulos ang pagsimba nila sa akon, kay ang ila ginapanudlo nga mga kasugoan ang ginhimo lang sang tawo. 8Ginapabay-an ninyo ang sugo sang Dios kag ginapalig-on ang tradision sang tawo.”

9Nagasiling pa si Jesus, “Maayo gid ang inyo paagi sa pagsikway sang sugo sang Dios agud matuman ang inyo tradision!

14Ginpanawag liwat ni Jesus

Ginadayaw ni Moises ang Dios, nagapasalamat si Moises sa Dios tungod kay ang Dios nagpatuman sa ila sang iya mga kasugoan. Indi bala sang pamatan-on kita masami kita nga nagasiling, “pabay-i lang ako bala; paggusto ko ya kon ano ang himuon ko; malayas na ko kay kadamo sang patakaran.” Pero ngaa subong tungod kay tigulang na kita, hamtong na kita, ngaa ginabalikan naton ang pagka-istrikto sang aton ginikanan,

Sang nagligad nga Agosto 22, 2015, ang aton parokya naghiwat naman sang

bulanan nga Medical, Dental, kag Optical Mission para sa aton kubos nga mga kauturan sa kabaranggayan nga sakop sang parokya ni Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. Ining bulanan nga buluhaton sang Simbahan ginapatigayon sang Parish Social Action Ministry (PSAM) kada ika-apat nga Sabado sang Bulan sa St. Elizabeth of Hungary Kinder School.

Sang nagligad nga Sabado kap-atan kag tatlo (43) ka mga parokyano ang nahatagan sang libre nga konsultasyon kag kinahanglanon nga mga bulong.

Ang mga nagapatigayon sini nga Medical Dental kag Optical Mission nagapasalamat gid sing daku sa mga volunteer doctors nga nagapakig-ambit sang ila kaugalingon agud nga ang ini nga hilikuton mangin matalunsay nga mapatigayon. Ang pagpasalamat ginapatuhoy man sa mga parish scholars nga maayo gid mag-amoma sa mga pasyente.

Paagi sini nga programa, ang Simbahan nagapakita nga ang mga nagakinahanglan wala ginapabay-an.

Kabay nga ining programa magpadayon sa gihapon agud nga ang Simbahan mangin kabahin sa mga solusyon sang mga problema nga gina-atubang sa karon nga panahon.

The Archdiocese of Cebu is organizing activities in preparation for the 51st International Congress. Our parish was chosen as venue for the visit of International Eucharistic Congress Symbol on August 24, 2015. This will be attended by the faithful from the different parishes in the city and nearby vicariates.

Sang Agosto 16, Domingo nga adlaw, ang Barangay San Roque naghiwat sang tuigan nga kapiestahan sa

pagpadungog kay Sr. San Roque. Sa kinaandan may Novenario kag naghiwat sang Santos nga Misa sa kada alas 6:00 sa gab-i sa sulod sang siyam (9) ka adlaw. Nagkalain-lain nga mga kaparian ang nagpangulo sang Santos nga Eukaristiya. Ginpahanumdum sa tanan nga sumilimba nga magpamati gid sa mga homiliya sang mga kaparian agud ang Pulong sang Dios magpabakod pa gid sang ila pagtuo kag mapangabuhi nila sa matag-adlaw nga tanan.

Ang nahauna nga adlaw ginpangulohan sang aton Parish Priest, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Higinio C. Velarde, Jr. Iya ginsiling nga kon luyag naton mangin disipulo ni Jesus, dapat kalimtan ang aton kaugalingon para mabuligan ang aton mga utod nga nagakinahanglan. Magpas-an sang aton krus adlaw-adlaw kag magsunod kay Kristo.

Si Fr. Joenick Territorio nagpaathag nga ang birtud sang kaluoy isa ka tanda sang Kristianismo. Gani aton gid segurohon nga mabaton naton ang kaluoy sang Dios. Formation sang nagligad nga Domingo, Agosto 16, 2015 sa Colegio de San Jose. Nagpasakop ang mga Vincentian students sang nagakalain-lain nga mga buluthoan kag Parish-based Youth Groups sa Iloilo. Isa sang nagpasakop amo ang mga kabataan diri sa parokya nga yara sa idalom sang SSVP, nga mga kaapuhan sang aton Feeding Program beneficiaries. Sila gintipon sang SSVP agud makaambit sa mga programa kag aktibidades sang SSVP, mabuligan sila sa ila pag-eskwela kag spiritual growth. Isa kag napulo nga mga kabataan kag napulo man nga mga katapo kag mga lola ang nag-upod.

Ang programa nagsugod a las otso sa aga paagi sa pagpangamuyo nga ginsundan sang pag-abiabi sang Archdiocesan President, Dr. Victor Jaleco.

Halimbawa, ano na lang ayhan ang natabo, indi man kita makapakot no, kon nag date-date kita sang una nga wala chaperon, kon ang boyfriend ukon girlfriend wala naton ginapakilala pormal sa aton ginikanan kag ginatago-tago ta lang, ano na lang kon wala kita nagpamati sa aton ginikanan nga ipaiway anay ini nga mga butang samtang naga-iskwela? Ano ayhan kon wala kita nagsunod sina nga gamay nga mga patakaran? Ok, old fashioned ako, nagalina-on ako subong, pero ti wala man kamo kakita sang mga ginakasal ko di sa katedral, nga imbes masiling sila “I Do,” “I Did” na ang ginasiling nila kay may ebidensiya na. Namista ako sa isa ka barangay diri sa Jaro. The Church is very practical. Wala lang kita ginbunyagan tapos pinabay-an. Bal-an niya nga mahuyang kita amo gani nga may isa pa gid sia ka panigurado nga makapalangit kita kag indi mahulog sa impierno tungod sang isa lang ka sala – gintukod ni Kristo ang Sakramento sang Pagkonpesar agud mahinulsolan naton ang aton sala.

Pero indi tanan may kasubong sini nga escape ukon remedy. Kon kaisa kon ano ang nabuhat naton nabuhat na kag wala na sing iban pa nga remedio. Diri na nagasulod ang

paghinulsol, ang mga tani, tani, tani. Kuntani kon ginsunod ko lang, kuntani kon namati lang ako, tani kon nangin matinumanon lang ako. Diri naton maapresyar liwat ang disiplina, ang mga tulumanon, ang mga regulasyon, ang mga layi. Kag diri man makasiling kita upod kay Moises “Daw ano ang kaalam sini nga pungsod! Wala sing iban nga pungsod nga may mga kasugoan, nga pareho sang ginatudlo sa inyo karon nga adlaw.”

Si Kristo sa aton Ebanghelyo wala nagabaliwala sang kasugoan. Sa baylo Iya ini gintuman. Kon may ginakaugtasan sia sa mga Fariseo, ang iya ginakaugtasan amo nga hagi sila insistir sa mga witi-witi nga kasugoan pero ang dalagko nga mga kasugoan ila ginatamay. Daw pareho lang na bala sang iban sa aton nga hagi panglibak nga panglibak, dayon pagbagting sang oracion manitsit, “hoy hipos kay mangadi kita!” Tapos bagting, tapos pangadi, panglibak naman nga panglibak. Si Jesus wala nagsiling nga indi kamo manghugas sang inyo mga tasa kag inyo mga kamot, sa baylo nagsiling sia luwas sina, dugang dira, himoa man ang buluhaton sang hustisya, sang pagkamaluloy-on, kag sang paghigugma.

Let us appreciate the rules, our laws, ang mga kasugoan sang Dios, ang mga patakaran. Its main purpose is to protect us from our own selfishness, they are there to protect us from our emotions of anger and hatred. They are there to bring us fullness of life not just in this life but also in the life to come.

Last Sunday I was surprised to know that Shiela had left Candle Light to work in Manila. An usherette had

given me the information. I regret that I haven’t given her best wishes.

I hope that she hasn’t left us for good – that she will find time someday to come back to the Cathedral. New friends are good, but old friends are better.

Sometimes I feel bad when I cannot attend our conferences in the journalism department especially if they are held in the evening. However, my limbs are no longer strong. I am already 87 years old and evening activities are no longer within my endurance.

When I joined Candle Light some priests told me not to leave the press while I am still able. I gave them my promise. Msgr. Buenaflor once told me to join the Broadcast Ministry. Although he offered a car for me, I told him that I preferred print journalism to broadcast journalism.

The years flew fast. Now I am in my sunset years but I still have a good

sight when it comes to writing. God has given me the beautiful gift of a retentive mind and ears that could hear well. I could still write declamation, oration, character impersonation, and even political campaign speeches. This gives me an income in my old age. My devotion to God the Father is giving me academic knowledge in writing. I am sure that Shiela is given the same gift by the Lord.

The Candle Light paper is given by God the Father His blessing and I know that anyone who will take the place of Shiela will be given His blessing.

We are happy to know through Candle Light that many of our young ones, from Private and Public educational institutions, are doing the apostolate in the places where they want to serve. This is because our Archbishop, bishop, priests, and lay apostles, are giving religious groups, especially those who are young, a generous leadership and tireless teaching.

Let us not be discouraged with the

loss of Shiela, rather, let us take the path she has left, with courage and diligence. Let us make Candle Light an inspiration and a guide.

The copies we turn out every week, cannot meet the demand of the reading public. However, the cost of printing is so dear that we can hardly meet our finances. Let us pray that with the copies we sent out every week, we will be able to reach those places which need the services of Candle Light.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ let us not forget to pray the rosary and other devotions every day. God the Father, Jesus, the Holy “Spirit, and Mother Mary are extending their hands to us to draw us out of the pit of confusion and bring us into the circle of their protection.

It is written: “Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you.”

Let us look up to heaven, say this, and bathe in the blessings of God.

To be detached from the parents and be enclosed in the four walls of the seminary is a sacrifice supposed to be

complemented with perseverance. Just like for example if we are interested to join this Marian inspired fun run on September 6, 2015, we have in mind of finishing the run, isn’t it? Can every runner be able to finish the run? In most cases, usually some love only to start because of excitement or of being just swayed only by the wave of the crowd. The big question is, can all runner finish? Perhaps they must have this in mind, ‘never mind, anyway I have tried’. But if we reflect on what our Savior did to save us, He really is a good finisher. Despite all the sacrifices, He persevered, human as He was because of His love for us.

God is also calling us not to be a starter only but to be a good finisher. I am writing this to remind our dear seminarians that in life generally, what we appreciate very well is the “endings”, like reading novels. I, myself does this, before reading the pocket book I used to browse first the ending if it is beautiful. Stories are remembered for their climaxes. For instance, in football, the

final score is what separates winners from losers and who felt the happiest victory, the winners. What made them successful is of course their perseverance – in practicing. These are just few examples of actual situations wherein we need to persevere in everything we do.

Every fifth Sunday of the month is schedule of the seminary in the Candle Light weekly publication for them to share to us their life. What life do they have now after they have started with their journey by detaching themselves from their loved ones? What life do they have being enclosed in the four corners of the seminary? They need most our prayer for perseverance in their vocation. They need our prayers not only as a starter in this run for priesthood but to end it in the altar celebrating the Paschal Mystery of Christ. They need also our benevolent help, so share your blessings to them. Thank you.

With the light that God gives us each day, we Christians are invited to fill this world with light. In the midst of

our society we can shine like stars. Writing about the first centuries someone said, “The first Christians were like the sun. In their presence darkness could not prevail.” The pagans were amazed, “See how they love one another!” See their joy before the face of death from the hands of their persecutors, how just amazing and even contagious! Their martyrdom dispelled the darkness around them – they really shone like the Sun. Think of Rome during that time. Think of Nero and the other pagan emperors… and the gladiators who dragged Christians to their death and the audience at the Coliseum who entertained themselves cheering as Christians were being sacrificed as food for the lions. “Eeeeh,” we would say. Yet they faced their deaths with awe and glee, with indescribable joy, as they offered their life for Jesus Christ!!!

The first Christians were heroes. Why were they so much persecuted during those first centuries A.D.? Perhaps and most probably because they stirred the conscience of their fellow citizens. They moved the hearts of people so that they would live in truth; prefer moral values rather than depravation and undignified practices, destructive competition and corrupt practices. Oh yes, these have been rampant even in those times. Power corrupted and the simple people, the youth and children suffered… it was not for nothing that our Lord Jesus Christ was born. He came to save us from the darkness of our sinful lives. Think of our very own times. How many evils exist!

And now that global warming – result of the wanton destruction of our Ozone Layer, meant to protect us from the direct piercing heat of our Sun, and of our virgin forests we see the result. In our country, so much rain! Perchance there is so much to be washed off. Yet those who are in hotels and condos are hardly affected. It is the poor people who get drowned and it is the children who wallow in the muddy waters. And what do our leaders do? Many of them hold on to power by all means and even perpetuate themselves in political dynasties. They act like little monarchs without noble blood! For true and rightful monarchs care for their people, looking after the plight of the poor and less fortunate in their societies. They care. They love. They are truly great.

The apostles Peter and Paul are long gone, yet their lives and teachings continue to inspire and challenge us to persevere and live out our Christian faith and ideals, to stand for the Truth, and to give our own lives for the service of others, without heeding the wounds nor counting the cost.

For we know that God is our unfailing strength, and His love is enough for us. His grace wil not fail us.

Oh, when shall we shine like a bright sun and bring in a new day? Lead on! Fear not, for “when God inspires you and desires that your dreams be realized, He will prepare the way for them to happen. He goes before us marking our way with rays of light. (Venerable Josefa Segovia, a candidate for sainthood, 1891-1957), (First President of the Teresian Association, 1919-1957) Yes, she was President for life.
