How Did your Ancestors Live aHundred Years Ago?

Local author Kenny O’Connell becameinterested in researching family history andafter then reading “The Gangs ofLiverpool” (a history of Liverpool’sVictorian street gangs written by MichaelMacilwee) he decided to a write a novelbased on the subject.

By using the comparisons between the2011 and the 1911 census years he came upwith a story that is told through the eyes ofa hoodie who is sent back in time to 1911.The Hoodie goes on a life-changing journeyinto the past; he witnesses poverty, injusticeand the brutality of the 1911 riots. Thehunter then becomes the hunted as hebecomes a victim of the notorious High RipGang, who terrorised Liverpool.

What they said about “The Hoodie andthe High Rip Gang”:

• Doctor Michael Macilwee (author)…

“A stirring tale of gang warfare, love andredemption in the Liverpool slums”

• Andrew Schofield (actor)...

“Every now and then another great storyabout Liverpool comes along and I believethis to be one of them”

• Dave Kirby (playwright)...

“This is a great book that incorporates a lotof factual events, blending them in with fic-tion. I love the idea of a hoodie being sentback in time and learning some hard

lessons from the past”

The book is on sale at Waterstones (BoldStreet and Liverpool One),

NORMANCONQUEROR

by Stephen Guy, West Derby Societycontinued from page 1

Battle Abbey, builtby William I, standswhere King Harolddied. The Roll is said tohave listed more than600 of William’s com-panions who helpedhim seize England.

It disappeared longago and we know itmainly from alleged16th century copiespublished by chroni-clers. The contentsand nature of the Rollremain controversialbut many agree that itprobably compiled inthe 1300s, long afterthe battle.

Once William hadcompiled theDoomsday Book heproceeded to carve upEngland among hiscohorts, pushing outthe defeated Saxons.

The chief Normanin north westEngland was Rogerde Poitou, Earl ofLancaster. His trust-ed friend was Vivian, son and heir ofWilliam de Molines.

Roger granted themanor of Sefton tothe de Molineses andVivian became gov-ernor of West DerbyCastle, a small butimportant fortressprotecting the route

between the Merseyand the Ribble.

They became theMolyneux familyand remained in WestDerby until the lastEarl of Sefton died in1972 without anyclose relatives.

Their coat of armswas the MolyneuxCross which is stillproudly displayedwhere they once heldsway. The stonewall-mounted cross

(pictured) can beseen in the Village.

Perhaps William deMolines had this dis-tinctive cross on hisshield at Hastings – itwas certainly used inlater conflicts.

He came to the rehom-ing centre from the dogwarden who brought himin as his family didn’t wanthim anymore. Bruno hasgot cataracts which restricthis vision, but he is cur-rently undergoing tests atthe centre to determine

by Teresa Gestwa

According to a PolishMidsummer celebrationritual, if the floatingwreath is found in theriver by a fitting mate thewreath maker will marryvery soon, otherwise sheshall wait for the next 12months.

Even though this practicemay not be an accurate mar-riage prediction in the modernworld, it did not stop over 300people from enjoying tradi-tional Polish wreath makingrecently in the World MuseumLiverpool, initiated byMerseyside Polonia.

As soon as the door of theWeston Discovery Centre wasopen to the public the roomwas full of people interestedin this unique Polish custom. The Midsummer Night is amagic time of the yearrejoiced by the ancient Slavsas a celebration of fire andwater. One of the rituals thataccompanied it was makingand floating flower garlandsdown the river. Rather thanbelieving in this pagan tradi-tion Merseyside Polonia pre-ferred to enjoy this Polish rit-ual by turning it into a com-munity gathering and a greatopportunity to try out visitors’artistic skills.

This successful event sawmany happy faces in theWorld Museum who wereeager to celebrate Polish cul-ture. Wreath making was a bitof a challenge for some butone to evoke a great sense ofachievement. Take a look atthe impressive cress paperflower crowns documented onmany photos available on thecharity’s Facebook page.

As an organisation fosteringgood relationships betweenthe local community andPolish people, MerseysidePolonia offers an array of cul-tural events throughout theyear. If you wish to find outmore visit Merseyside Poloniaon Facebook or sign up for anevent alert by sending anemail to [email protected].

• Shaw’s Meats from Cumbria have abutchers stall (also at Lark Lane and Wooltonmarkets) and specialise in game, meats andexotic meats. Also gluten-free meats andmeat products.

It was no surprise to bump into MaryTremarco from the Sefton Arms pub who is pic-tured at the market with her two grandsons, brothers Patrick (12) and Luke (8). After all, themarket is held in the Sefton Arms pub car park ofwhich Mary is the landlady! Incidentally, Maryasked if we could remind everyone to please notpark on the Sefton car park on the night beforemarket day. Mary told us “I think the market isgreat, bringing both locals and people from out-side West Derby to the village. It helps to bringthe community together and make a difference.I was delighted with the support for the market,it all went very well and it can only get better. Itwas great to have the animals there and maybethere’ll be a few more next time”.

Mary continued “With all the lows in thecurrent media it does show a brighter side ofWest Derby and also shows that the surround-ing areas have a lot to offer with the likes ofCroxteth Park Heritage Society promotingCroxteth Park Hall which we are very lucky tohave on our doorstep. Everyone in the area gotinvolved, including the church who had a carboot sale with free coffee, and we at The Seftonoffered up a mega-breakfast for just £4, tea andcoffee included - great value. We’ve had noth-ing but positive reactions from all involved andI was really pleased to see The LINK there”.

JOSEPH HUMPREY from West Derby pic-tured on page 18 enjoying his ice cream, mumHeather took her two boys along to the market andshe told us how much she liked the market andthought it was really good for the community.

PREPARATIONS FORTHE PREM BEGINFOR THE CROFT

by Mick TitheringtonStoneycroft players reported back

for training at the beginning of July asthey prepare for the forthcoming 2012-13 campaign in the LCPL Premierdivision.

The good news is that all of the squad thatwon promotion have indicated they will bestaying at the club and either have or will besigning forms in the near future. ManagerJohn Leary oversaw a testing first sessionwhich the players not so much enjoyed butendured with good humour and high spirits.John was delighted to see Steve Dowd back infull training and heartened by the news thatCarl Donohue is set to return and Eddie Bakerhas been given the OK to start running withthe hope he will be back in action aroundOctober. All the other players have reportedback with fit to play clearance.

Pre-season friendlies, which because ofground availability will all have to be playedaway, include the annual fixture with Airbus,in the Bryan Jones Memorial Cup, SouthLiverpool and Waterloo GSOB leading up tothe first Premier League game on 18thAugust.

A number of players received awards which

were presented at a socialevening arranged to celebrate theseason’s success. Recipientsincluded Liam Currie, Player ofthe Year; Paul Finnegan, Players’Player of the Year; Jon Bowers,Supporters’ Player of the Yearand Sam Kershaw, Young Playerof the Year (all pictured at theevent). The club will be running aVeterans side this year and theywill compete in the I ZingariCombination Veterans Division.Chairman Kenny Morrison wel-

comed this move and said “Weare pleased with this developmentas we are anxious to extend ourinvolvement with the communityand widen our support. Theexpense of running a side in thePremier League is considerablyincreased and we are hopeful thatwe can gather support from localbusinesses or individuals toadvertise in our programmeand/or sponsor games”.
