EXECUTIVE SUMMARYCommunication studies majors are required to complete an externship as part

of their degree. At the conclusion of the externship, students develop a work portfolio that illustrates all projects completed.

This portfolio presents work completed in partnership with Oregon Tech’s sports marketing department. Various projects aim to promote community support, improve fan interaction during games, maintain program history and records, and create new apparel designs.

Projects completed during this externship include season schedule posters, starting five introduction images, women’s basketball media guide and template, men’s basketball uniform designs, and sponsorship marketing brochure.

During my fifth year of study at Oregon Tech, I enrolled in a Business Communications class taught by the institution’s graphic design manager, Bill

Goloski. My interest for graphic design turned into a passion over the duration of the class, and I developed a desire to continue my work into a professional career.

As a requirement for my communication studies degree, I assisted Mike Garrard in the Sports Marketing department by completing various projects. This presented me the opportunity to develop and refine current or new design projects for the athletics program. Projects focused on promotion of the Men and Women’s Basketball programs.

This portfolio presents my work during the 2016 school year, with all work completed during my senior season as a student-athlete. I would like to thank Mike Garrard for his assistance and guidance on various projects, and Kevin Brown for his supervision during the completion of my portfolio.

Basketball ProgramThe first project of the externship was designing and creating the 2015-16 Season

schedule posters for the Men’s and Women’s basketball program.

Being a senior, I was excited to work on the project as each senior from the program were featured on the poster for their final season. I wanted the piece to bring focus to the graduating players, while evoking Oregon Tech pride through strong use of the school’s colors.

It was important to include the recent performance of the women’s team, along with the history from the men’s program by adding conference and national championship achievements at the top of each schedule.

Players were edited and masked in Photoshop, along with the poster background. The final piece was developed through InDesign.

In 2009, Oregon Tech added two full color digital matrix video boards that feature two scoreboards at each end of Danny Miles Court. The video boards have

capabilities of showing advertisements, live game action, still images, and video clips. The video boards have provided an interactive experience for fans.

While the video boards have provided positive upgrades to a game experience, they still were lacking some aspects to improve a game night atmosphere further. NCAA and NBA games feature team and player introduction videos and images when the home team is introduced.

Player images were created to utilize the video boards and provide an interactive experience for fans as players in the starting five were introduced. The image elements were developed in Photoshop and InDesign to include the players name, number, class, position, and hometown.

Womens basketballCoach Scott Meredith began his Lady Owls career in 2009 and has turned the

program into a high quality program, producing all conference players and strong team chemistry. As a result, Oregon Tech won two consecutive Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships in 2014 and 2015, while recording their first victory at the NAIA National Championship in 2016.

The program wished to develop a media guide that previews the upcoming season and keep player and team records for future Lady Owls to revisit. The hope is to have them reach the record list during their career in Klamath Falls.

With the assistance of Mike Garrard and Coach Meredith, the Women’s Media Guide was created and printed for the first time. The guide includes individual player profiles, season previews and reviews, and individual and team records. A cover (pictured right) represents the team first attitude held by all Lady Owls.

Womens mediaNow that the first Women’s Basketball Media Guide had been created, the next step

was to ensure each proceeding season would have a corresponding program for each season.

This led to the development of a template to decrease the work needed on future media guides, and provides an outline for assembling of the document.

In preparation for the 2016-17 season, a review of last year’s team performance, preview of next season’s key returners (pictured right) was included. In addition, returning players were players in the two-page profile area to highlight their player biography and career statistics.

InDesign was used predominantly for the creation of the template, with necessary information and page alternations made.

2015-16 Recap and 2016-17 PreviewThe Lady Owls finished the 2015-16 season with a 26-9 overall mark. This group will be remember as

members of the program’s first win at the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. The Owls finished their record setting year ranked 17th in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches

Postseason Top 25 Poll..

After losses to NAIA powers Westmont (Calif.) and The Master’s College, Tech would enjoy 10 wins from their next 11 matchups, including an opening road sweep in Washington during the opening week of CCC play. The Owls continued their great form, tallying nine consecutive wins moving their mark to 13-2 and an outstanding 20-5 overall record. The Lady Owls earned the #2 seed in the CCC postseason tournament, ending with 16 wins and 4 losses in conference play. The Owls returned to postseason play looking to win their third conference tournament title in as many seasons. After posting an impressive 70-47 rout over Warner Pacific, Oregon Tech faced rivals Eastern Oregon University in a home semi final. A resilient 12-2 scoring run resulted in a hard fought 51-43 victory, overcoming two-point deficit with two and a half minutes remaining in the game. The win ensured the Owls received the CCC’s 2nd automatic bid to the National Tournament. The win set up a meeting with archrival Southern Oregon University. The Raiders, eventual National Tournament runner up, sent the Owls to an 85-63 defeat.

The Owls entered the National Tournament as a #7 seed facing #2 seeded Jamestown (N.D.). The Owls made program history and registered the first upset of the tournament, defeating the Jimmies 71-64, after trailing by 13 points midway through the third period. The magical season ended in the Sweet 16, losing 72-66 to eventual national champions, Marian (Ind.).

Senior guard Karly LeVeque was named a Third-Team NAIA All-American, capping off an outstanding career that included two CCC First Team honors. Joining her on the 2016 All-Conference First-Team was sophomore Ashleigh Vandenbrink, and senior Megan Whetsone, with senior Tess Armstrong earning Honorable Mention. In addition, senior Karissa Harbick, and junior guards, Mary Drzayich and Vandenbrink, earned NAIA Scholar awards.

The Owls will look to make a fourth consecutive trip to Sioux City led by returning starters Carly McIsaac, and Vandenbrink. Additional key returners include senior Mary Drzayich, and sophomores Morgan Roberts and Nohea Waiwaiole.

2016-2017Players who are considering their college destination as a student-athlete are taking

playing uniforms under consideration. The saying is - If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good.

Incoming coach Justin Parnell was looking to order new designs for the 2016-17 season, while keeping a traditional and classy look on the floor. All players were provided design samples to compare and choose color and style preferences while coaches made the final decision.

With some collaboration, Coach Parnell decided to go with a gray and black color design for the upcoming season. The Nike uniforms template is taken from Illinois University and is sure to make the Hustlin’ Owls look even more formidable to each opponent.

SponsorshipLegendary Coach Danny Miles left a strong tradition and history at Oregon Tech. The

tradition will continue, but with a fresh outlook for the future.

To continue the strong support and relationship with local community organizations, Mike Garrard provides the opportunity for the promotion of businesses at Oregon Tech during sporting events, including basketball and softball.

Providing two marketing options allows business owners to get their name out in public at high attendance events, and to donate to the Institution’s sports programs.

With an average home crowd of over 1,100 people, basketball games at Danny Miles court ensures wide exposure to people in the community.

The multimedia advertising brochure was reproduced to incorporate the past successes of the basketball program, with the hope of continuing strong community support.
