Green  Barrow  Publishing  http://greenbarrow.com.au    and  Kilbaha  Multimedia  Publishing  http://kilbaha.com.au

A   good   approach   is   to   brainstorm   responses   to   these   and   similar  questions.   Cover   the   board  with   them,   or   fill   a   suggestion   box  with  them.   Then   ask   students   to   divide   them   into   fantasy   and   possible  responses.  Reject  the  fantasy  for  now,  though  there  may  be  potential  there   for   creative  writing.   Look   for  historical   realities  which  support  the  possible  responses.  Decide  on  the  most  likely.

It   is   also   important   to   be   on   the   lookout   for   parallels   with  modern   life,   for   the   future   is   also   dependent   on   our   responses   to  What  if  …  Questions!

1. What  if  the  Roaring  Forties  blew  from  the  east  instead  of  from  the  west?

2. What  if  Australia  had  been  settled  by  the  French  (or  Dutch  or  Portuguese  or  Spanish)  instead  of  by  the  English?

3. What  if  Tasmania  had  been  settled  by  the  Dutch?

4. What  if  Joseph  Banks  had  discovered  gold  in  Botany  Bay?

5. What  if  the  American  War  of  independence  had  not  been  fought?

6. What  if  the  Australian  land  mass  had  been  joined  to  Asia?

7. What  if  kangaroos  were  carnivores?

8. What  if  Governor  Bligh  had  been  the  first  governor  of  Australia?

9. What  if  Europeans  had  never  invented  guns?

10.What  if  Port  Jackson  did  not  exist?

11.What  if  convicts  had  literally  been  dumped  and  left  on  Australia’s  shores?

12.What  if  there  had  been  a  much  larger  and  more  warlike  native  population  on  the  Swan  River  in  1929?

What  if  the  Roaring  Forties  blew  from  the  east  instead  of  from  the  west?

The  following  are  examples  of  the  kind  of  responses  that  you  can  hope  for,  though  your  students  might  like  to  throw  in  some  whackier  examples.  If  you  seek  responses  to  the  above  question  via  a  suggestion  box,  and  your  students  haven’t  yet  got  the  hang  of  it,  you  can  slip  in  a  few  of  the  following  to  provide  some  substance  to  the  exercise.  Or  simply  provide  students  with  all  or  some  of  these  responses  and  start  a  debate/discussion.  Best  done  later  in  the  year,  rather  than  earlier.

• The  Kon  Tiki  might  have  reached  Australia.  • And  so  might  some  native  South  Americans.  • Ships  sailing  around  the  Cape  of  Good  Hope  would  be  more  likely  to  sail  towards  India

than  Australia.  • Australia  would  have  had  more  contact  with  South  America  than  with  South  Africa.  • Rio  de  Janeiro  would  have  been  more  important  to  us  than  was  Cape  Town.  • The  English  would  have  taken  over  Rio,  just  as  they  did  Cape  Town.  • That  might  have  started  a  war  with  the  Spanish.  • The  Brits  had  beaten  the  combined  French  and  Spanish  fleets  at  Trafalgar  in  1805

anyway.    • So  Argentina  would  have  become  part  of  the  British  Empire.  • They  could  have  dumped  their  convicts  there  instead  of  in  New  South  Wales.  • So  they  wouldn’t  have  had  to  settle  Australia.  • So  maybe  the  Dutch  or  the  French  would  have.  • But  the  Spanish  or  the  Portuguese  might  have  settled  here  even  earlier.  • And  then  we’d  have  had  bullfights  with  kangaroos  instead  of  bulls.  • If  it  was  the  Dutch  we’d  have  more  windmills  to  start  with,  and  now  we’d  have  wind  farms  all

over  the  place.  • And  we’d  speak  a  different  language  • And  have  funny  sounding  names.  • Or  if  we  were  French,  we’d  eat  frogs!  • And  our  national  holiday  would  be  Bastille  Day.  • So  Invasion  Day  would  be  in  July  rather  than  in  January.  • The  Aboriginal  people  might  have  been  better  or  worse  off,  depending  who  they  were  ruled

by.  • We  wouldn’t  have  the  Union  Jack  in  the  corner  of  our  flag.  • The  Brits  would  have  come  here  anyway,  because  they  had  the  biggest  navy.  • So  the  land  might  have  been  divided  between  three  different  European  countries.  • And  there  might  have  been  a  war  between  them  somewhere  here.  • And  the  losers  would  have  to  go  back  to  where  they  came  from.  • Or  we  could  have  put  them  in  concentration  camps.  • So  we’d  have  some  very  different  History  to  study.    • The  east  coast  of  Tasmania  would  be  rugged  and  wild,  and  the  west  coast  would  be  much

nicer.  • Maori  people  might  have  crossed  over  in  large  numbers.  • New  Zealand  might  have  become  more  important  than  Australia  because  it  was  the  first  stop

on  the  way  to  everywhere.
