Evening Lecture, Cocktail Party & Launch: Friday 8 August, 2014There will be a welcome Cocktail Party and launch in the Victoria Room at 6.30pm of two initiatives: the first by Louise Hird of the new Winn Clinic, a clinic which can be accessed online. The Winn Clinic includes both a consultation and referral service. The second initiative by Dr Timothy Keogh and Prof Dianna Kenny is an animation and brochure concerning psychoanalysis developed in consultation with Dr Elizabeth Hindmarsh, General Practitioner and Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).

7.30pm Lecture - Dr Stefano Bolognini: Wilma’s wounds: A focus on intra-psychic and inter-psychic difficulties

The lecture, which details the psychoanalytic treatment of a rather striking case of a traumatised adolescent, illustrates the intra-psychic and inter-psychic difficulties of this patient, during the therapy and outside of it. It also focuses on a figure of the familial universe and of the world of internal objects, one Dr Bolognini feels has not been sufficiently taken into account nor given sufficient value in psychoanalytical considerations: the grandfather.

Overview of the Open Day Conference The 2014 APAS Open Day Conference on Saturday 9 August will explore the nature and clinical application of psychoanalytical empathy, which keynote speaker Dr Stefano Bolognini notes, is a condition of conscious and preconscious contact characterized by separateness, complexity and linked structure: a wide perceptual spectrum including every colour in the emotional palette, from the lightest to the darkest; above all, it constitutes a progressive shared and deep contact with the complementarity of the object. The Open Day will explore empathy using clinical experience, poetry, literature and spirituality, in order to increase awareness of its importance and value in clinical work and in applied (interdisciplinary) settings.

About the Speakers:Keynote Speaker: Stefano Bolognini, M.D. psychiatrist and training and supervising analyst of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society. He is currently the President of the International Psychoanalytic Association, after having been IPA Board Representative, twice, and member and chair of several IPA committees. Dr Bolognini is also a former president of the Bologna Psychoanalytic Centre, former National Scientific Secretary and former President of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society.

He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Psychoanalytic University in Berlin and has published over 170 psychoanalytic papers in international books and reviews. He has written novels as well as articles for newspapers and magazines. His main psychoanalytic interests are in empathy, countertransference, psychoanalytic education and psychoanalytic organizations. His latest publication is entitled Secret Passages. Theory and Technique of the Interpsychic Relationship, IPA New Library, Routledge, London, 2010.

Dr Shahid Najeeb is a Psychiatrist and Training Analyst of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society, Sydney. He has a special interest in the wider application of psychoanalytic thinking, and in particular the relationship of Buddhist thinking to psychoanalytic concepts and ideas, on which he has given many lectures.

Mr Maurice Whelan is a member of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society. He trained as a Psychoanalyst with the British Psychoanalytical Society in London. A past Chairman of the Sydney Institute for Psychoanalysis, his published work covers the fields of social work, education, literature and psychoanalysis.

Dr Deborah McIntyre is a Psychoanalyst with the Melbourne Branch of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society.

Open Day Program: Saturday 9th August, 20148.30 am Registration and coffee

9.00 am Welcome address by the President of the Australian Psychoanalytical Association (APAS).

Dr Vivienne Elton

9.10 am Introduction to keynote speaker: Chair, Mrs Maria Teresa Hooke

9.15 am Keynote lecture: The humanizing function of contemporary psychoanalytical empathy. Dr Stefano Bolognini

What is “psychoanalytical empathy”? How is it different from usual natural empathy? The specificity of the

interpsychic contact in analysis will be examined and compared to the normal, mutual understanding between two

human beings in daily life.

10.05 am Questions and discussion

10.30-11.00 am Morning Coffee

11.00-11.45 am In praise of fireflies: A note on empathy: Dr Shahid Najeeb

This paper is essentially about light, especially the quality and dimensions of living light. It seeks to explore the nature

and wonder of this light and our attempts to capture it. It also seeks to understand how this light is communicated

and the potential transformative possibilities inherent in it and in our quest for it. These explorations might help us

understand something about the living elusive mysteries of psychoanalysis, including its cornerstone, empathy.

11.45-12.30 am The space we occupy and the space where others reside: Empathy in the poetry of Seamus Heaney: Mr Maurice Whelan

The spirit I endeavour to convey in my paper is that which is referred to in the foreword to Stefano Bolognini’s book

Like Wind Like Rain, where Owen Renik, says, “The brief pieces collected in this volume are as much short stories as

they are essays as they are psychoanalytic studies.” The lecture in turn looks at how poetry and psychoanalysis make

similar demands, how a knowledge and love of poetry can sustain one in the consulting room.

12.30-1.00 pm Discussion: Chair, Dr Rick Curnow

1.00-2.00 pm Lunch

2.00-2.45 pm “If we could talk to the animals” - The provocation of the title: Dr Deborah McIntyre

This paper aspires to be a sort of verbal ‘riff’ on the conference title, an extended variation on the – if not melodic

exactly, then at first glance harmonious – theme of ‘humanizing’. The title prompts wondering: what does it mean to

humanize and what has psychoanalysis got to do with it?

2.45-3.15 pm Discussion: Chair, Ms Liz Orr

3.15-3.45 pm Afternoon Tea

3.45-4.45 pm Panel Discussion: Dr Stefano Bolognini, Mrs Maria Teresa Hooke and Dr Louise Gyler Chair: Dr Timothy Keogh

The panel will respond to the papers presented and attempt to draw together the main themes of the day.

The audience will then be invited to join in a lively discussion about the clinical and inter-disciplinary applications of

psychoanalytical empathy.

4.50 pm Closing Remarks: Dr Vivienne Elton, President of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society

5.30 pm Special Event: An exhibition of Haiku and photographic representation of psychoanalysis:

Dr Shahid Najeeb (author and curator) will give an introduction to the exhibition (wine included).

Clinical Workshop Program: Sunday 10th August, 2014Workshops from 9.30-1.00pm (including a morning coffee break at 11.00am). Workshops held in the Elizabeth Room.Workshop 1 (9.30-11am) At the movies with psychoanalysis: Brodeuses: A Common Thread (Potential Films), a film by Eleonore Faucher.

The relationship between seventeen year old Claire (who is pregnant) and Madam Melikian, a master embroiderer (who is grieving the loss of her son), is an ideal subject for examining the concept of psychoanalytical empathy. Whilst excerpts of the movie will be shown it is suggested that a viewing of the entire movie prior to attending the workshop is desirable.

Presented by International guest speaker Dr Paola Golinelli and chaired by Dr John McClean. The workshop will examine sequences of the movie and participants will be invited to take part in the discussion with reference to their own clinical material.

Workshop II (11.30-1pm) The language of empathy: Challenges for communicating empathy in the child psychoanalytic encounter. Presented by Dr Louise Gyler and Ms Pam Shein.

In this workshop, Louise Gyler will present a paper focussing on both empathic and anti-empathic states of mind in child and adolescent analyses and Pam Shein will present clinical material for a ‘weaving thoughts’ style discussion.

Workshop III (11.30-1pm) Balint group experience. Facilitators: Dr Bill Betts, Dr Tom Wilmot and Ms Leonie Sullivan. The aim of the workshop is to provide an experience of a Balint Group. Balint groups were developed by psychiatrist Michael Balint – who worked with general practitioners in London in the 1950s – to meet the specific and unique needs of GPs. Since then, the Balint group method has continued, developed and become internationally recognized, with an International Balint Federation and groups and societies in many countries.
