BEAUTY ... AND A BEASTe world-class 2014 Lexus LS460 is youthful, sleek and sexy

Until I started test driving automobiles for the magazine, I never really had the opportunity to get intimate with the Lexus brand and oen wondered if the cars lived up to the hype. Aer kickin’ it with the LS460, I can honestly say, I’m now in LOVE with the Lexus brand. With the LS — the agship model of the Lexus sedan lineup — Lexus absolutely nailed it. e LS is oered in three styles: LS460, LS460 F Sport (which adds 19-inch forged alloy wheels and high-performance Brembo brakes) and LS600h L Hybrid (which adds a 5.0L, V-8 engine and all-wheel drive) — with about $50,000 separating the base model from the top-of-the-line. We test-drove the LS460, which starts at $73,050 for the base model, but is loaded with

enough standard features to satisfy even the most discerning buyer.

Under the hood: e direct-injected 4.6-liter, 386-hp V-8 engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivering an exhilarating combination of acceleration, smooth shiing, control and modest fuel eciency. It rockets from 0-60 in 5.4 seconds, with an estimated 19 MPG combined. e LS 460 comes in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, for better traction in bad weather.A Drive Mode dial on the center console allows the driver to select ve driving modes: Eco (for better fuel economy), Snow (for improved traction), Comfort (adjusts the suspension for

a smoother ride), Sport (adjusts the car’s throttle response to make shis quicker and rev higher for maximum power), and Sport Plus (tightens the suspension for better handling).

On the inside: e interior of the LS460 is handsomely appointed, super comfortable and plush. Its boardroom good looks and premium leather-appointed seats, door panels and dashboard are enhanced by the classy Shimamoku wooden steering wheel and matching trim, which combines the organic feel of natural wood with a layered look that evokes modern art. A massive 12.3 multimedia touch screen is your point of contact with all the latest technological gadgetry. e screen can be a single shot of audio controls, or a navigation map, or it can be split into three, exhibiting

navigation, audio and climate, or other web-based features. It’s controlled by the Remote Touch Interface, which Lexus describes as a haptic joystick mechanism, similar to a computer mouse. Optional luxury packages include the impressive 19-speaker, 450-watt Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound Audio System.

With the available fully-automated Climate Concierge, the vehicle monitors the temperature of four separate climate zones and adjusts not just the fans, but also the temperature of the seats and steering wheel individually as soon as the car is started. No need to activate the A/C or heater, the car knows which one to choose and each zone achieves its pre-set level of comfort as quickly as possible.

ARIZONA BIKE WEEK COMES TO SCOTTSDALE

All eyes were on the Baillon collection during Retromobile week in Paris, with the Artcurial auction house o ering a stunning menagerie of 100 cars, 60 of which were deemed to be in restorable condition. e collection had come to light only in the past few months and consisted of automotive treasures that had been hidden away for decades, rescued from the crusher by Roger Baillon, a shipping magnate. While the lion’s share of the collection consisted of obscure coachbuilt French automobiles from the pre-war era, a number of better known cars were also in the sale.

‘ ese exceptional results spring from work that has taken six months,’ commented Matthieu Lamoure, managing director of Artcurial Motorcars. “News of the Baillon Collection has traveled around the world. International buyers came together in one room to pay homage to Roger Baillon. is triumph demonstrates the universal passion for the automobile. is is a signi cant collection that has enjoyed a signi cant success.’ In all, the collection brought in a staggering $28.5 million with an 89 percent sell-through rate, 85 percent of the lots going to buyers outside of France.

PORSCHE DELIVERS 16,000 VEHICLES IN JANUARY! With 16,000 vehicle deliveries to customers in January 2015, Porsche AG continues its success of the past year. The Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer achieved an increase of 31 percent in comparison to the same month of the previous year. The 911 is in high demand by customers with more than 2,400 deliveries of the sports car icon in January. “After a successful 2014, we want to continue to carry forward our goal of qualitative growth this year,” said Bernhard Maier, member of the executive board for sales and marketing of Porsche. “Our next step will be an expansion of the model line-up with the sportiest Targa in decades — the 911 Targa 4 GTS — and the thoroughbred mid-engine Cayman GT4 sports car.”

AUTO RECALL NEWS• American Honda Motor Co. is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Acura

MDX and 2014 Acura RLX vehicles. Very low temperatures (below -8 degrees f) may affect the ability of the driver’s and passenger’s seatbelt to extend or retract.

• General Motors is recalling certain model year 2015 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV vehicles. The passenger side instrument panel top cover on the affected vehicles may have been manufactured using an incorrect spacer fabric, causing a reduction of adhesion between the spacer fabric and the vinyl show surface. This reduced adhesion may result in inconsistent passenger air bag deployment. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”

• General Motors is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Cadillac XTS vehicles manufactured February 14, 2012, to August 22, 2014, and 2014-2015 Chevrolet Impala vehicles manufactured November 5, 2012, to September 2, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the electronic parking brake piston actuation arm may not fully retract causing the brake pads to stay partially engaged.

• Chrysler Group is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Fiat 500L vehicles manufactured March 3, 2012, to July 25, 2014. Irregularities in the folding process during assembly of the driver’s knee airbag may result in its improper deployment. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, “Occupant Crash Protection.”

• Nissan North America is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Infi niti M35 hybrid vehicles manufactured April 7, 2012, to September 9, 2013, 2014 Infi niti Q50 hybrid vehicles manufactured December 10, 2012, to July 15, 2014, and 2014-2015 Infi niti Q70 hybrid vehicles manufactured April 9, 2010, to May 7, 2014. Due to a software error, in the affected vehicles, if the signal is lost from one of the two throttle position sensors (TPS), the engine control module (ECM) will go into a fail-safe mode, partially closing the throttle chamber. Should the lost signal be restored, the throttle chamber may open, regardless of the position signal from the TPS.

In acceleration tests conducted by the Michigan State Police and Los Angeles County Sheri ’s Department, the EcoBoost-powered Ford Police Interceptor sedan bested all V8-equipped competitors’ sedans. e EcoBoost-equipped Ford Police Interceptor utility out-accelerated the competition’s all-new V8-equipped utility and all base V6-powered sedans. e 2015 Ford Police Interceptor sedan, featuring standard all-wheel drive, clocked a 0-60 mph time of 5.85 seconds versus 6.31 seconds for a competing 5.7-liter V8 sedan with all-wheel drive. In 0-100 mph testing, the Police Interceptor sedan recorded a time of 14.19 seconds, while a competing 5.7-liter sedan posted 15.63 seconds and a rival 6.0-liter sedan took 14.69 seconds. e Ford Police Interceptor utility, with standard all-wheel drive, accelerated to 60 mph in 6.55 seconds and 100 mph in 16.13 seconds. A competing all-new utility vehicle powered by a 5.3-liter V8 posted a 0-60 mph time of 7.31 seconds and a 0-100 mph time of 18.99 seconds. At the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, where Los Angeles County Sheri ’s Department testing was conducted, the Ford Police Interceptor sedan turned in a 0-60 mph time of 5.9 seconds. e EcoBoost-equipped Ford Police Interceptor utility not only out-accelerated its competition, it was faster in 0-60 mph trials than all V6-powered base-model sedans. An EcoBoost-equipped Ford Police Interceptor sedan placed rst overall, posting a lap time of 1:20.47. e EcoBoost-equipped Police Interceptor utility also placed rst and posted best-in-class stopping distances. With results like these, it’s no wonder that Ford police vehicles continue to be the market leader. e 3.5L EcoBoost V6 is available on the all-wheel-drive model. e 2.0L EcoBoost I-4 is available on the front-wheel drive model.

DELIGHT

When I was handed the keys to the new 2015 Volvo XC60 T6 Drive-E Crossover SUV, I was pumped. For two reasons: this was the magazine’s rst-ever review of a vehicle by the legendary Swedish automaker and it was a 2015 model year, our rst of the season a er a long run of 2014s.

e XC60 is part of Volvo’s all-new Drive-E program, that includes a host of technologies for e ciency and eco-friendliness. In 2014, the XC60 got an interior and exterior makeover, which was largely carried over to 2015 with only a few minor changes.

One can view the XC60 as the natural evolution of the boxy Volvo wagons of the seventies and eighties. e styling of the XC60 is distinctly Scandinavian, though much more re ned, aerodynamic, and less boxy than Volvos in the past. I actually like the bold look: the hood and fenders, paired with a wide grille and LED

daytime running lights, form a prominent face. Muscular curves ow through the body to the integrated exhaust.

And as you’d expect from its Volvo DNA, it’s fully loaded with award-winning and cutting-edge safety features. e XC60 T6 Drive-E comes in our trim levels: base, Premier Plus and Platinum. We test drove the Platinum edition.

UNDER THE HOOD: is is where the new Volvo really impresses. e front-wheel drive XC60 T6 features a supercharged and turbocharged 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine. e engine cranks out 302 horsepower, a huge number for such a small displacement. e belt-driven supercharger o ers a boost in low-rev ranges then transitions to a turbocharger in high-rev ranges, a combination that greatly reduces “turbo lag.” e system delivers impressive fuel e ciency and enough punch to accelerate con dently on freeways.

Volvo’s start-stop system is a technology generally found in hybrid cars. At a stoplight, the engine will shut down while the brake pedal is depressed, and as soon as your foot is taken o the brake, the engine will re back up, ready to accelerate.

ON THE INSIDE: As I climbed into the front seat of the fully loaded XC60, the panoramic moon roof opens up the cabin with an abundant supply of light, making it feel bright and roomy. Two-tone leather treatment in the interior and the leather steering wheel are tasteful and classy.

e oating center stack is a thing of beauty with a masterful layout and elegant simplicity. e climate controls are ridiculously intuitive: on the stylized diagram of a person, just push on the body part you want to heat or cool. A high-resolution seven-inch touchscreen controls the infotainment system, including info and images from the navigation system, phone, satellite radio, reversing camera, and so on.

e instrument cluster features an active TFT crystal display for various gauges and information — all of which are customizable. e display will show the posted speed limit — a cool feature so you don’t have to crane your neck looking for speed-limit signs.

e rear cargo area is quite roomy (67.4 cu. .) with a hidden storage compartment under the carpeted deck.

COMFORT

e Hyundai Equus was one of the rst luxury vehicles we reviewed in 2013, and with a few mild exterior and interior touch-ups, as well as even more standard tech and safety features, we love it even more in 2014. With the Equus, you’re getting incredible bang for the buck in the premium performance category, inching ever closer to the BMW 7-series, Lexus LS, Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S-class.

Hyundai makes shopping for the Equus a snap: there are two trim levels: Signature and Ultimate. We test drove the Signature, which is impressively well-equipped: owners will enjoy 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels with staggered-width performance tires, opulent leather seating,

wood trim interior, lane departure warning system, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, pre-collision warning system, nine air bags, smart cruise control with automatic braking, multi-view camera system that provides a 360-degree view around the entire vehicle, and many other bells and whistles.

UNDER THE HOOD: Equus’ dual-overhead-cam 5-liter V-8 engine is a 429-horsepower beast, providing plenty of muscle and get-up-and-go for merging and passing maneuvers. e V-8 engine is cutting edge: it has gasoline direct injection (GDI), dual continuously variable valve timing, and tuned variable induction. Its eight-speed automatic transmission and rear

wheel drive deliver lively acceleration, sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds. Its fuel economy numbers are somewhat disappointing — an estimated 15 city and 23 highway — which is about the only negative we can say about this vehicle. e Equus o ers three air suspension modes — Normal, Sport and Snow — though this car is at its best as a highway cruiser.

ON THE INSIDE: e Equus’ cabin is where the vehicle really stands out. With plush leather, French stitching and other high-quality touches, the interior of the Equus is something special. From the 2013 version, Hyundai re ned the dashboard, center stack and steering wheel with

sharper detailing. e seven-inch TFT gauge-cluster display is big and bold. e infotainment system with premium navigation system is displayed on a bright 9.2 inch screen and navigated by an intuitive clicky console knob. It’s highlighted by a thumping 598-watt, 17-speaker, Lexicon 7.1 Discrete Surround Sound audio system. A tri-zone (front-le , front-right, and rear) climate control system keeps every passenger comfortable. Another shot of class comes courtesy of the heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather-booted shi lever.

e heated and ventilated front seats have 12-way adjustability and the posh accommodations extend to the cavernous back seats, with audio and climate controls located in a fold-down center armrest. e Ultimate version o ers a DVD system and twin 9.3-inch monitors that are nestled nicely into the seatbacks.

Overall, the refreshed 2014 Hyundai Equus radiates luxury from every angle, adding some technological enhancements and performance upgrades that boost an already lavish package. In a crowded eld of luxury sedans, the Equus holds its own against some of the nest.

BIG, BRAWNY AND

BEAUTIFUL Many Americans still desire beefy truck-like SUVs, and the 2015 Lexus LX570 is a classic body-on-frame behemoth. e jumbo-sized luxury SUV was redesigned for the 2013 model year, and the 2015 edition is loaded with standard equipment and posh amenities. In fact, there is only one trim level ... you just choose one of three optional luxury packages and other add-ons. e base price starts at $82,630, and you can quickly trick this SUV out with extras to more than $90K.

UNDER THE HOOD: Expect plenty of oomph from the he y V-8 engine with intelligent dual variable valve timing, which is paired with a six-speed sequential-shi automatic transmission and an advanced four-wheel drive system. e drive train is shared with Toyota’s Land Cruiser, and it cranks out 383-hp. and 403 lb.- . of torque. It accelerates from 0-60 in 7.5 seconds. It’s a legit contender in the o -roading category, capable of towing up to 7,000 pounds and enough ground clearance to pass over rocks and other small obstacles. While it drives well on highways, its size and weight aren’t friendly on winding roads. It comes equipped with what Lexus calls Crawl Control, designed to automatically maintain an optimal low and steady pace over challenging

terrain. Turn Assist tightens the turning circle by adding brake force to the inside rear wheel. As expected, gas mileage is dismal at 12/17 mpg — but hey, you’re not purchasing this SUV for fuel economy.

ON THE INSIDE: Inside, the LX570 is fully loaded with comfort, convenience and technological features. Our test model was loaded to the hilt with luxury extras like rear-seat DVD entertainment system, radar-adaptive cruise control, intuitive park assist, and a 19-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. e posh cabin is roomy, quiet and luxurious, adorned with high-quality materials, including premium perforated leather power seats, leather-trimmed heated steering wheel and shi knob, and real wood trim. With 28 vents throughout the cabin, the LX features a four-zone climate-control system that allows driver and passengers to select ideal temperature settings. e LX570 seats eight — though the second and third rows can only comfortably accommodate rug rats and small teens. e second rows fold and ip fully forward to expand cargo space, while the third-row seats ip up and rotate to the side — allowing for cargo exibility for larger items.

LUXURY’SNEW LEADER

e luxury crossover SUV market is ultra-competitive, so Japanese carmakers are always looking to get a leg up on the competition. Acura, Honda’s luxury badge, introduced a re-designed MDX for 2014, making it lighter, safer and more fuel e cient. It also got an exterior makeover, with bolder styling and smoother lines. Most Importantly, designers shed the Honda Odyssey minivan platform, and opted instead for a dedicated platform, which allows the 2015 MDX to grow by 2 inches in length and 2.7 inches in wheelbase.

Bottom line: the 2015 MDX is a spacious, tech-savvy SUV that delivers exceptional ride and handling for a three-row crossover.

UNDER THE HOOD: e MDX is powered by a 290-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive is standard, though upgrading to Acura’s Super Handling All Wheel Drive system is well worth the price, especially when driving in inclement weather.

2015 Acura MDX arrives to take on a crowded luxury crossover SUV marketBY CHARLES HUDSON

ough the MDX weighs more than 4,000 pounds, the drive train powers it well. Acceleration is brisk and the suspension easily handles a variety of highway and city driving conditions. e ride is remarkably nimble and handling is sharp.

ON THE INSIDE: As you’d expect from a high-end Honda, the cabin looks modern and rst-class, with plenty of leather appointments, crisp metallic surfaces, understated wood inserts on the dash and doors, padded materials and so -touch buttons. e dashboard is well laid out and most controls are user-friendly. e infotainment system in the center stack is handled by two screens — the learning curve diminished by actually reading the owner’s manual.

Standard features include tri-zone dual-mode automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, rear backup camera and a power-operated tailgate. e test vehicle was loaded to the hilt with the Tech Package, Advance Package and Entertainment Package, which added an Acura Navigation system, 10-speaker premium sound system, DVD player, extra-wide rear 16.2-inch screen and a host of other luxury and tech features.

e MDX can comfortably accommodate seven people. Both the middle and rear seats fold at, and one-touch third-row access makes it easy for kids to climb in the back. Cargo space is modest: 15 cu. . with the third row seats up; 68.4 cu. . with both second and third row seats folded down.

e Fusion is a handsome sedan with three di erent engine options, including standard, hybrid and the Energi, Ford’s plug-in hybrid that adds 21 miles of electric range. e range doesn’t sound that impressive, but it beats the Toyota Prius and Honda Accord Plug-Ins, which are rated at only 10 all-electric miles. Under the hood, the Energi features a 2.0L I-4 Atkinson-cycle powertrain, coupled with electronically controlled, continuously variable transmission (eCVT), pushing out 141-horsepower and 129 lb.- . of torque. Buyers can choose between a 164-horsepower, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine or a 182-horsepower, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine. Front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission are standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. We test drove the top-of-the-line Limited FWD, which o ers respectable 21/28 MPG ratings. Handling and acceleration were excellent, though the engine noise was quite noticeable. e so leather-appointed interior of the Limited is comfortable and roomy. e Tucson does everything well for a small crossover SUV, but nothing exceptional. If you want to boost the vehicle’s coolness quotient, upgrade to the technology package, priced at $2,550, which adds a panoramic sunroof, seven-inch navigation system with touchscreen and XM NavTra c, LED tail lights and premium audio system.

It’s a prideful feather in the cap for American cra smanship … it’s designed, engineered and built in Michigan. e 200 is o ered in either a four- or six-cylinder engine in front-wheel or all-wheel drive versions. It’s the industry’s rst mid-size sedan with a standard 9-speed automatic transmission, which enables fuel economy ratings to reach 32 MPG highway. In the test model, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine produces a best-in-class 295 horsepower and 262 lb.- . of torque, emitting a nice rumble when started. It rockets from zero to 60 in 6.0 seconds. Inside, the 200’s interior is sleek and modern with plenty of high-quality materials and clever design elements. It’s highlighted by a large center console with pass-through storage space, covered charging station and sliding cup holders. Atop the console, the Uconnect multimedia command center in the 200S boasts a monstrous 8.4-inch high-resolution touchscreen.

TOYOTA’S

CROWN JEWEL

e Avalon is Toyota’s agship sedan, with styling and luxuries that position it close to a Lexus. For those wanting to buy “American made,” the Avalon is built at Toyota’s plant in Kentucky and is exclusive to North America. It was completely redesigned for the 2013 model year, and the 2015edition is loaded with standard equipment and luxury amenities. e Avalon is o ered in four trim levels: XLE, XLE Premium, XLE Touring and Limited. We test-drove the Limited. ere is also a Hybrid edition.

UNDER THE HOOD: e Avalon’s drive train — a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired to a 6-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission — is strong, smooth and responsive, o ering plenty of acceleration (0-60 in 6.9 seconds) and punch on the freeway. It’s quite e cient with an EPA-estimated 31 mpg highway and Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) certi cation. e Avalon Hybrid gets a remarkable 40 mpg combined — outstanding for a luxury sedan.

DIESEL When I was rst handed the keys to the 2015 Volkswagen Touareg TDI LUX, I was a bit skeptical. is was a diesel vehicle ... and my senses were prepared for smoky exhaust and obnoxious engine noise. But this wasn’t the case. e Touareg is re ned and luxurious, and a er a few spins around the block, I was thoroughly impressed with VW’s luxury diesel SUV.

e Touareg is in its second generation, but received minor updates for 2015. From my perspective, the Touareg hits all the marks: clean lines, a quiet and powerful diesel engine, an abundance of standard features, a comfortable and roomy interior, and excellent ride quality. At $55,885, though, the Touareg is probably out of most people’s budget.

UNDER THE HOOD: e V-6 TD diesel engine, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, provides excellent acceleration and power on command. It’s rated at 20 city/29 highway/23 combined MPG, which are decent numbers considering the Touareg is a sizable four-wheel-drive SUV. You’ll pay more at the pump for diesel fuel, however, which o sets the Touareg’s modest fuel economy.

All-wheel drive is standard, and it provides excellent control in wet, snowy and muddy conditions, making it an excellent vehicle for those who live in areas with foul weather and di cult road conditions. Yet it still handles well during dry conditions.

ON THE INSIDE: e Touareg TDI is a ve-seater loaded with luxury amenities. A touch-screen navigation and infotainment system is intuitive and smart. A panoramic sunroof brightens front and back seats with sunlight. Plenty of controls are strategically placed on leather steering wheel, including Bluetooth wireless connectivity, cruise control, audio system and controls for the Touareg’s on-board computer, which diagnoses problems like low tire pressure, and gives a readout of the vehicle’s current fuel e ciency.

e back seats are richly appointed with comfortable leather, A/C vents and a 12V plug to recharge gadgets. For versatility, the back seats fold down at and split into a 40-20-40 con guration, providing ample room to haul both people and things.

And speaking of cargo, the rear tailgate opens with a simple pass of your foot underneath the vehicle’s rear bumper, so there’s no more dgeting for key fobs while your arms are double-loaded with grocery bags and toddlers.
