G P C C S P COnce again, thte weather gods were kind to us.The fete proceeded in an orderly fashion onceagain due to the sterling work of the fetecommittee. We had the usual stalls by the W.I.,Gwennap Church and others. The “find thewine stall run by two of our regular supporters,John and Linda did particularly well. The schoolentertained us with some country dancing andthe catering was again done by Raymond’sAmusements provided the mail play attractionswhilst Victorian Mobile Catering who providedthe hot dogs, bacon rolls and other food via theiraffiliate, Andy’s Bouncy Castle Hire, supplied asecond bouncy castle.
We had a number of vehicles on show, includingold tractors Steve Corbett’s steam roller and asmaller traction engine, also in steam.
The profit was as usual split between the fetecommittee, Cusgarne Community School andthe Parish Council who financially contributedtowards the event.
The committee would like to express their thanksto all who contributed by way of time, money, expertise or in any other way.
Here’s to asuccessfulfete nextyear!

PLAYING FIELD
On behalf of a group of users of the children’s playarea at the playing field, I would like to say howmuch we all enjoy the peaceful setting and welllooked after play equipment. We bring groups ofchildren by minibus regularly and appreciate thebonus of having clean, open toilets to use. Somethingthat is not available at some of the biggerplaygrounds in the area.Keep it up!R.G. Penryn
Twelveheads again! 13th August
It was very nice to have our verges cut last week, farfurther down the road it was becoming single track. However, the drawback is that it revealed anothercrop of lager cans previously hidden. In 150 yards Ipicked up more than four dozen. So, the plot thickens. They are not disposed of at thetwo car park lay-bys and on this occasion notdistributed evenly down the road, but in clusters, where no one would park. Cluster don’t match casualdiscards from car windows but are more likesomeone actually dumping collections of cans whichthey are too embarrassed to put in their recycling, soI fear this may be a sad tale of an alcoholic in need ofhelp. But, if you were thinking of investing in Breweryshares, Fosters lager seems a very good bet.M.G. VILLAGE FETE
Dear Sir
What a wonderful time we all enjoyed at the GrandSummer Fete at the Playing Fields on 27th June. Thesun shone, and there were so many happy peoplegreeting folk they hadn’t seen since last year, having ago on the many stalls and entertainments for thechildren and enjoying a cream tea in the café.
What a pity that no-one took over the microphone tothank the team of people who had worked so hard forthe last ten months organising the Fete. Helen Rowe, the enthusiastic and seemingly tireless Chairman ofthe committee, Mary Richards who encourageseveryone to join in and get on with it, CarolineRoscorla who so adeptly looks after the finances,Carol Stirk who sets up and manages the café,Lorraine and Kingsley Osborne who look after thesigns, Fiona Barnard who represents the School andMargaret Herbert who represents the WI. In additionPhilip Roscorla designs the Fete notices and printsand laminates where necessary all the rest of thenecessary paperwork and Rob Rowe, John Stirk andthe team who work so hard on Fete day putting up themarquees and shifting furniture.
Without all these people, there would not be a Fete forthe Parishioners to enjoy, so a big thank you to all ofyou.
Name and address supplied.
CUSGARNE MANOR – correctionWe (I !) got it wrong last time.It seems that James Watt, the famous engineer, lived inCusgarne House in the late 1700’s whilst working onpumping engines in local mines and not CusgarneManor. I was close - only a couple of fields away! Inthose days the Manor was known as Cusgarne Wartha.Watt’s wife wrote at the time that he arrived in badhealth but was soon in better spirits, given the
“delightful place” with its gardens of fruit trees andbushes. She also mentioned the worst thing as being
“the bad roads that lead to it in every direction”.Seems some things never change………………
LOCAL NEWS &LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
CROFTHANDY VILLAGE HALL
The year is marching on and I think the less said about theweather the better. Our classic motorcycle show wasblessed once again with good day.
Many new bikes and lots of people all enjoyed a great day. This one day requires a massive effort from the committeeand is much appreciated by all who attend. The end resultis a major part of the running cost of the new hall is secured.
Such efforts enable the committee to continue improvingand maintaining the existing facilities for the community. The latest addition is a pair of goal posts for the field builtby the committee, and this time paid for by the ParishCouncil, many thanks to all concerned. Also we haveresurfaced the main entrance and replaced the fridgefreezer at great expense, funded by ourselves.
It has been perfect weather for the weeds and our treasurer, also the man who cuts the grass has done a grand job, manythanks. It has been a busy time for children’s parties duringthe school holidays with few if any weekends when the hallhas not been in use. We have our village barbeque comingup in September details are on the notice board or ring ourbooking secretary on 01209822577.

We have lots of events planned for the forthcoming term, the first of which is our Harvest Festival 7th October. This has traditionally been an enjoyable event wherelots of our families get involved. Cornwall Council will shortly be launching two different trial initiatives thatwill help reduce rubbish and improve recycling services across Cornwall.
The trials are called ‘The pots, tubs and trays recycling trial’ and ‘The wasteincentive neighbourhood scheme’In your area we will be running a pilot of the ‘pots, tubs and trays recyclingtrial’
What is the pots, tubs and trays recycling trial?
● Plastic pots, tubs and trays make up a large proportion of ourhousehold rubbish and we currently can’t recycle them. We wantto see how much we can recycle if we could.
● We currently only collect plastic bottles in the collection service, along with the other materials such as paper, cardboard,cans/tins, glass and textiles.
● Only 46,000 properties are included in the trial including someproperties in your area. Every household included will receive aleaflet through their door. If you don’t receive a leaflet you are notin the trial and should not start putting these items out.
● We will also be sending you additional information nearer to thestart of the scheme.
In other parts of Cornwall we are inviting a number of town and parishes totake part in the ‘waste incentive neighbourhood scheme’.
This scheme is about town and parish councils submitting ideas on how toreduce the amount of rubbish in their area.
At the end of both of these trials we will compare the results to see if thepilots are successful in reducing Cornwall’s rubbish.

Start of Season - Autumn EditionWith the season just started after a lot of hard workduring pre-season both the first and second teams arelooking very strong heading into their respectiveleagues come September.During the summer we hosted our annual 5 a sidetournament which was eventually won by Holmans. The day itself was very successful with the sun shiningdown on all day while the barbeque was feedingeveryone from the 15 teams that entered on the dayalong with supporters and the very kind referees whogave up their Saturday to help us out over the day.Frogpool’s past players once again came together onAugust 30th to face their present side inFrogpool/Cusgarne’s sixth annual Jayne Lewarnememorial match. The afternoon started with a minutes silence in memoryof Jayne Lewarne and Frank Andrew. The present side managed by Lee Booker wasvictorious this year after a 6-2 win against the past sidewhich for the first time were managed by Joff Mallaber. The goal scorers were Sam Holmes, Nick Lasseter,Mike Rollason, Alex Bawden, Dean Goulding andRowan Hartgroves for the Present side. Richie Wardand James Gazzard were the goal scorers for the pastside.Afterwards everyone went to the Cornish Arms wherewe were treated to refreshments from landlord andlandlady Tim and Jane. Many thanks to Kevin Knowles for refereeing the matchand to everyone who helped organise the day and lookafter supporters with food and drink throughout theafternoon.
GWENNAP PARISH at the end of World War Two
Towards the end of the Second World War in March 1945, a public meeting was held at Cusgarne School to forma committee to organise fund raising events. Their aim was “that all boys and girls from this parish serving in HMForces shall equally benefit, and should they not return the next of kin to receive the amount”. The fund wouldapply to all that served from 1939 through to VJ Day in 1945.
So the “Parish of Gwennap Home-coming and Tribute Fund” was born and over the next year fund raisingevents were held to raise the total of £565, allowing a payment of £7pounds.10shillings and eleven pence to bepaid to each who qualified.
The fund raising included several Whist Drives at Gwennap, a School Concert, a collecting box at the Cornish ArmsHotel, a Sacred Concert at Hicks Mill and the biggest fund raiser, the Frogpool Agricultural Show. Here are two of the pages from the Show Catalogue.

This is a cross between the classic upside down cake and a steamed treacle sponge. You can adapt it in somany ways by making it part of a lazy Sunday breakfast with smoked streaky bacon and strawberries or it isa wonderful cake to serve with coffee.
Preheat oven to 180°C/170°C fan/gas mark 4/350°FLightly butter a 19cm/7½ inch ovenproof soufflé ordeep glass or earthenware flan dish
250ml/8fl.oz maple syrup(you could reduce this to 200ml/7fl.oz)125g/4oz self-raising flour125g/4oz caster or light soft brown sugar125g/4oz softened unsalted butter2 large eggs, beaten2 tbsp milk
Variations: Add pecan nuts or pineapple to the maple syrup in the dish to make a special topping. You couldeconomise with golden syrup but the flavour and texture of the cake will be different.
Pour the maple syrup into the prepared ovenproof dish.
Sift the flour into a large bowl and add the sugar.Combine using an electric food mixer for about 30seconds.
Gradually add the butter and eggs to the flour andsugar and beat until the mixture lightens andbecomes creamy. Add the milk and beat foranother 30 seconds.
Now comes the tricky part. Carefully spoon thebatter mix onto the maple syrup a bit at a timetrying to cover as much of the syrup as possible.Don’t worry if there are little gaps as the mixturewill spread as it cooks but try to make sure thesyrup stays under the batter not on top.
Bake in the pre-heated oven for about 45-50minutes until the cake is nicely brown on top (ittastes even better if the edges are slightly burnt).Check by lightly pressing the centre of the cake; if itseems firm then it is done. Remove from the ovenand leave to cool. When just warm run a kniferound the edge, place a serving plate over the topand turn the cake out onto it. Serve slightly warm(you could reheat it in the dish first). Justwonderful with custard or ice cream. Don’t expectany leftovers!

1317Dear Resident
Proposed St Day PharmacyI attended the NHS England oral hearing at CrofthanyVillage Hall on the 11th of June to listen the case for andagainst the setting up of a new pharmacy in St Day, itbecame very clear from this hearing that if this was togo ahead the Doctors Surgery in the village would sufferfinancially as it would not be able to dispense theprescriptions to any person living within a radius of 1.6kilometres of the pharmacy if it was built. This was alsothe case for anyone living within this radius who attendthe neighbouring surgeries, you would have to go to thenew pharmacy in St Day if it was built to pick up youprescription as your GP Surgery would not be allowedto continue dispense the medication needed. I alongwith many parish council representatives voicedconcerns and all were totally against the setting up ofthis pharmacy.
Cornwall Council Chief ExecutiveAndrew Kerr the Chief executive officer at CornwallCouncil is leaving the council to work in his home townof Edinburgh, Scotland after a serving just two years ,assurances have been given that he will not be given agolden handshake. The council will again have to gothrough another costly exercise of appointing a newchief executive officer hopefully this time they will bemore committed to Cornwall and the services thiscouncil provides.
LitterI have received some complaints about litter especiallyon the day of the refuse collection, some people areputting out their rubbish bags the night before leading tothe black bags being ripped open by wildlife. I havemade the contractor aware of this, and they had tospend a considerable amount of time clearing up all themess. They will be monitoring the area and sendingenforcement letters to properties, where there isevidence that bags have been attacked by birds or otheranimals. This will outline the householdersresponsibilities for protecting waste up until the time it iscollected by the Council and the availability of reusableanimal proof bags available from Council One StopShops for £3.50.
If properties continue to allow their bags to be attacked, then the evidence will be forwarded to the EnforcementOfficer, with a view to more formal action and potentiallyissuing fixed penalties to offenders.
A date for your diaryI will be auctioneer at the Cornish Arms Frogpoolharvest festival on the 1st of October starting at 7.30pm,all of the money raised will go to the Multiple SclerosisCharity, Merlin MS Centre, please come along and support this event.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWSWe meet on the third Thursday of each month at theParish Rooms in the Playing Field at Pulla Cross – 7pmstart, and the first half-hour is your chance to raise anylocal issues with the Council.Councillor’s details can be found on all Notice Boardsand our website – www.gwennap-parish.net
What’s currently topical? Well…………….● Cornwall Council is pressing all parishes to receive
planning application documents electronicallyinstead of paper copies. This has provoked muchdiscussion from the parishes about the practicalitiesand the costs. An ongoing matter, and will be for awhile yet!
● Still on the subject of Planning, we get theopportunity to comment on all planning applicationsin Gwennap Parish. These are normally discussedin our open monthly meeting, but occasionally thedeadline for the return of comments falls before ournext meeting, so three Councillors local to theapplication site will deal with it. Cornwall Council willhave notified the immediate neighbours and postedsigns nearby, but if there is an application near youthat you wish to comment on, you can do so onlineat the Cornwall Council website or e-mail thosecomments to [email protected] toensure your voice is heard.
● Another idea from Cornwall Council is to pass somehighway responsibilities on to parishes. Verges, ditches, hedges and sign cleaning could all becarried out by the parish council, but there are stillmany unanswered questions, especially regardingwhether the money will follow the tasks. Another
“watch this space” topic.● The blight of Fly Tipping remains a real problem in
the parish, and we continue to havecorrespondence with Cornwall Council regardingtheir attitude that the new charging for some itemsat HWRC’s covers the additional cost of having theextra fly-tips removed. In the meantime, our parishhas to put up with the visual and health & safetyimpact of the discarded rubbish.
● It is our opinion that their business case wasfundamentally flawed by omitting certain costs andwhen the scheme is reviewed on 30th September, our Chairman has asked to attend the meeting toreinforce our views.
Hedge growth. It’s that time of year again when yourgarden or farm hedge could be encroaching on topavements or roads making it difficult for pedestrians orvehicles to pass. Please take a look outside of your ownproperty to see if a trim would improve the situation.
Each year the Parish Council has the opportunity to seekgrant funding for projects in the Parish. Funding comesfrom a number of sources such as the SITA Trust,Natural England, various other trusts and the ParishCouncil itself. The projects are meant to improve qualityof life in the Parish.
We would like to canvas your opinion and input for newprojects. If you can think of anything that would “better”the Parish then please send a note to the Clerk, AlanBlamey [[email protected]] or write. Ifyou have any thoughts on this list of ideas then pleasecontact us.
● Buy an old Phone Box (potentially as a book swapor providing some other service) – locatesomewhere in the Parish.
● Defibrillator – located somewhere in the Parish.● Re-instatement of the Parish Pump – originally
located near the school.● Sound damping panels for the Parish rooms (after
several comments from users).● Roundabout for the playground at Richard Jory
Playing Field.● Additional or replacement play equipment at
Richard Jory Playing Field – current equipment isreaching the end of its life.
● Create a Skate park at Richard Jory Playing Field– larger project.
● Community Theatre for Gwennap Parish andsurrounding villages – obviously a large projectrequiring significant grant funding.
● Amenity area in Frogpool to include picnic tables, possibly the phone box/defibrilator, CommunityOne Stop Shop, etc.
● Refurbish Richard Jory changing rooms and garage.● Buy an awning to support community events such
as the Parish fete.● Extend Parish Rooms possibly to include a stage
and a bar – to provide greater use of the rooms andwider services to the Parish.(very large project)
● Car park lighting for the playing field - possibly solarpowered.
● Mining Visitor centre or additional informationboards for Wheal Maid.
● Create an official Mountain Bike facility at WhealMaid – initially grant maintained but later self-funding.
● More picnic benches at the playing field.● Bike stand for the playing field.
