In Search of Porpora
Through recordings old and new, Roger Neill will explore bel canto singing in the early 18th century through the vocal lineage that runs from Porpora through two Manuel Garcias and Mathilde Marchesi to singers of recent times – Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland, Kiri Te Kanawa and Meryl Streep, plus a whole new generation of counter-tenors rediscovering the world of the castrati.
Neill is the author of the recently-published DIVAS: Mathilde Marchesi and her Pupils.
Barber Lecture Theatre Free
After a busy summer of planning and rehearsing, we kick off the new academic year at the University with
a Barber Opera – an exciting professional production in the Barber Institute, swiftly followed by our annual Music in the Making day for students who are new to the University or those of you who live locally and want to see what University Music is all about.
I am thrilled with the concerts that we have coming up in the Barber Evening and Lunchtime series, and this Autumn includes two of my personal favourites, Canadian Brass and violinist James Ehnes. In addition to the regular concert series we also present this year’s Birmingham International Piano Festival from late October and – with a variety of genres – it is safe to say that this is the most eclectic piano festival so far.
We celebrate the 5th anniversary of the opening of The Bramall on 5th November as part of a weekend of events in the Elgar Concert Hall and welcome Guy Johnston for a performance of Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the Philharmonic Orchestra. This performance is the start of a brilliant series of concerts presented by University Music ensembles and the Music Society – including a performance of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle in December by the 150-strong University Chorus.
Whether you join us every Friday in the Barber or make it to the occasional concert here and there – we look forward to welcoming you to the University for some fantastic concerts this autumn.

Amid the turmoil and politics of the courts of the first Roman emperors one woman rises to prominence. Agrippina fought for her family and her empire – a true matriarch – in spite of the powerful forces that surrounded her.
Porpora's earliest opera, revived for the first time since its premiere in 1708, L'Agrippina explores the relationships and politics at play in court. Wife of Germanicus, Roman General and heir to the Empire, Agrippina finds herself amid an intricate web of allies, enemies, would-be suitors, and comedically amorous servants – relationships that are spun out over enchanting and vibrant
music that hints at the virtuosity of the composer in his later years.
Directed by Daisy Evans, with a cast of some of Europe's finest early opera singers, a newly commissioned multi-media visual design, and featuring the baroque orchestra of the Musical and Amicable Society. L'Agrippina is conducted by Professor Andrew Kirkman, Director and founder of The Binchois Consort.

Kodály Sonata, Op. 4Rachmaninov Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor
Richard Jenkinson and Alexander Boyd perform Kodály’s two-movement, folk-inspired sonata for cello and piano – with an interpretation informed by Richard’s Doctorate research at the University. This is followed by Rachmaninov’s 1901 sonata – a work that the composer insisted be called Sonata for Cello and Piano due to the equal weighting of the parts, with the piano introducing each of the main themes and the cello embellishing and developing the melodies.

The work received mixed reviews following its premiere – though the majority were very complimentary – with music critic Filippo Filippi (la Perseveranza) noting, "This time, Rossini has outdone himself, because no one can say what prevails, science and inspiration. The fugue is worthy of Bach for erudition."

Join Follia as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) with a musical journey through two of his ground breaking 'Paris Quartets', together with chamber music by his French contemporaries Jean-Philippe Rameau, Jean-Baptiste Forqueray and Claude Balbastre.

Pity anyone who appears on the same platform as baritone Willard White. He has so much presence he can eclipse an entire symphony orchestra and chorus with a mere twitch of an eyebrow. The Guardian
