Aviation has always been a journey. From the Wright brothers’ historic flight to modern unmanned systems, Kansas State University Aviation students continue their journey by training in one of the best aviation programs in the country. Our 33,000-square-foot Aviation Center is equipped with modern classrooms, labs, a state-of-the-art CRJ simulator, an operational dispatch center, and an aviation maintenance training hangar. We have three instrument runways right outside the door and our unmanned aircraft systems program is nationally recognized. Many of our teaching faculty are Master Certified Instructors. In fact, we have more MCFIs than any other aviation university in the country.

AIRPORT MANAGEMENT

In K-State’s unique approach, you first become an instrument-rated pilot at the tower-controlled airport to immerse yourself in the terminology and operational environment of aviation, which gives you a more well-rounded understanding of your future career. Flight training is followed with courses in basic and advanced ATC and management as well as industrial experience to prepare you for a career as an experienced ATC manager. Faculty employed in the field share real-life experiences in the classroom teaching you the spatial and communication skills necessary for this dynamic and challenging field.

Be part of an industry that is growing at home and abroad, with salaries averaging near $100,000 annually at larger facilities.

To provide you with a well-rounded picture of airport management, you will begin by becoming an instrument-rated pilot. To prepare you for other aspects of your career you will take classes in aviation law, operations, planning, design, safety and security, environmental studies, incident investigation, management, economics, and marketing. Your elective classes may incorporate construction, civil engineering, personnel management, or other topics that will provide you with the background and skills you will need in your career.

Faculty employed in the field share real-life experiences in the classroom and field trips and internships provide hands-on experience in the many facets of airport management and operations. You will also have the opportunity to become a Certified Manager through the American Association of Airport Executives.

Our graduates have careers in bench repair, line troubleshooting, installation, and line maintenance at major and regional airlines, national and international carriers, corporate and general aviation operators and manufacturers.

AVIONICSGet the education and practical experience you need for a career in avionics with an emphasis on line-based maintenance. Approximately 85 percent of your training is lab-oriented and training equipment includes a G1000 training bench with the ability to load Cessna and Cirrus software and troubleshoot software problems, GNS430s and a GNS530 used for wiring installation, as well as maintenance aircraft used for troubleshooting. With the training you receive at K-State you can attain the NCATT Aircraft Electronic Technician certificate and the FCC General Radiotelephone Operator License.

AVIATION MAINTENANCEAll aircraft maintenance must be performed or supervised by FAA-certified mechanics. K-State’s aviation maintenance degree is certified by the FAA under Federal Aviation Regulation Part 147 and prepares you to earn FAA certification for aircraft repair, installation and modification, and maintenance of the airframe and powerplant. Your classes will focus on electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems; composite and metal fabrications and repair; avionics; engine overhaul; and troubleshooting to provide you with knowledge and skills demanded by the industry.

K-State graduates have built careers as FAA-certified mechanics, shop foremen, lead technicians, and supervisors at major airlines, national and international carriers, regional airlines, and corporate and general aviation operators at companies such as Cessna, Duncan Aviation, Hawker Beechcraft, and Yingling Aviation.

Specialized trainingYou can specialize in non-destructive testing of aviation parts and aircraft or advanced composites in larger transport category aircraft. Either would be beneficial if you want to work in the airline industry.

Our proximity to accessible restricted airspace creates an ideal setting for learning to fly unmanned aircraft, as the Smoky Hills Weapons Range provides a location to gain hands-on flight experience. K-State is also one of only a few universities with authorization to fly UAVs in the National Airspace System.

UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMSK-State is one of the first two universities in the United States to offer a bachelor’s degree in UAS. Our program uses a hands-on approach for learning and attaining the skills you need to safely operate and manage a variety of UAS platforms and sensors rather than training only with simulators.

In addition to manned flight training you will gain field experience flying both Vertical Takeoff and Landing UAS and primary UAV trainers including the larger Aerosondes and Penguins. You will assume roles as crew members including launch and recovery, sensor operator, pilot in command, mission commander, or safety officer. In addition to assisting with hand-off operations, where control of the aircraft is turned over to another operations base during the flight, you will integrate a live system and conduct test flights.

Opportunities for unmanned aircraft pilots grow larger every day with higher than average starting salaries in the aviation industry. You could expect to build a career in private industry, government contracting, law enforcement, emergency management, homeland security, military and defense programs, or even agriculture.

K-State Salina’s professional pilot program uses the Jeppesen-Sanderson integrated flight training program. You’ll start flying two weeks after starting ground school and the program is FAR 141 approved so you can meet commercial instrument minimum-flight-hour requirement in 190 hours instead of 250 hours. Most students begin their aviation career before graduation, as certified flight instructors. An active flight instructor can acquire approximately 1,000 flight hours per year.

Transportation programAll fixed-wing pilot students are eligible to participate in the transportation program, which teaches you to fly turbine aircraft as well as prepares you for corporate aviation by flying university VIPs, such as the president, athletic coaches, and guests, in our King Air.

Our graduates have gone on to work at airlines such as American, American Eagle, America West, Continental Express, SeaPort, Southwest, United, and Vanguard as well as for, Cessna, Bombardier Learjet, and Hawker Beechcraft.

Helicopter trainingWhether you are interested in a few flights, helicopter transition training, or all of your flight ratings and certifications in a helicopter, our partnership with Universal Helicopters’ experienced flight instruction staff lets you train according to your needs. The helicopter fleet consists of two Robinson R22 Beta IIs and one Robinson R44 Raven II. UHI boasts a 100% employment rate for students who complete their program.
