Applications are available from the ABA office or online at www.usayrshire.com. Contact us if you need assistance evaluat- ing if this program will be an advantage for you! Ayrshire Yearbook The first issue of the Ayrshire Year- book has been published! It is available for your viewing online at http://www.usayr- shire.com/genetics.html. The next Yearbook will be published in the fall. Watch for more details! Ayrshire Breeders’ Association News The Ayrshire Breeders’ Association ended the 2011 calendar year on a positive note. Registrations were up 8%, transfers were up nearly 3% and net assets for the year were positive. A budget for 2012 was approved allowing for new projects while projecting a positive year-end balance. Increased travel throughout the year by staff and directors will be done to tar- get areas where field service will be ben- eficial. Breeders are encouraged to contact the ABA if assistance with registration and transfer work would be helpful. An update was made for animal iden- tification. Animals born after June 1, 2012, that are identified with American ID tags must have two forms of identification: ie two tags or one tag with an official tattoo. Animals that are 75% Ayrshire or less will be registered at the rate of $7.50. This change in registration fees was done to en- courage greater participation in registry. The Board of Directors has worked to stress the importance of increasing pro- duction and greater profitability over the past several years. The first step was the implementation of an improved cow per- formance index and production type index. The next focus has been to increase educa- tion and awareness of young sires available through A.I. The ABA is also working to assist A.I., as much as possible, to find a variety of pedigrees with increased produc- tion potential. The Directors recently approved a program to offer a registration incentive for young sire daughters. For every in-tact, readable unit of semen turned into the ABA for bulls born before 1990, the ABA will provide a $3 credit for registrations submit- ted from March 1, 2012 through March 1, 2013 on current A.I. young sire daughters. Another action was taken to increase the focus on increased production for the breed. Beginning in 2013, the unfresh fall yearling class will be eliminated from ABA Registration Reminder Any Ayrshire male born July 1, 2011, or later must be DNA tested to receive a registration certificate. The fees for regis- tering males have been updated to include the DNA testing fee. The ABA office will send breeders a DNA kit upon the receipt of the registration application. Official reg- istration certificates will be returned to the breeder once the ABA receives the DNA results. national shows and the All-American con- test. The discussion for this change was focused on profitability and increased pro- duction. Animals in this class are two years old by the time they show in national shows and many are often not bred. The Board of Directors approved the following slate of candidates for the 2012 elections: Region 1 – Richard Caverly, Benton, ME and Dale Maulfair, Jonestown, PA Region 2 – Neal Smith, Smyrna, TN and Mark Valentine, Thurmont, MD Region 3 – Jessica Gatton Dixon, Conway, MO and Darryl Keehner, Guttenberg, IA At Large - Pamella Jeffrey, Wakefield, RI and Donna Mertz, Neosho, WI MEETINGS March 9-10, 2012 - Wisconsin Ayrshire Annual Meeting, Pewaukee, WI April 20, 2012 - Pennsylvania Annual Meeting at Plum Bot- tom Farm, Belleville, PA June 26-30, 2012 - National Ayrshire Convention, Appleton, WI SALES March 3, 2012 - Morrell Farms Complete Dispersal, Co- chranton, PA March 10, 2012 - Woodsbrook Farms Milking Herd Disper- sal, Bristol, IN March 23-24, 2012 - Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf Sale March 30, 2012 - Ohio Ayrshire Spring Sale, Columbus, OH March 31, 2012 - Iowa Ayrshire Spring Sale, West Union, IA April 13, 2012 - Kentucky National Sale, Louisville, KY April 13, 2012 - New York Spring Dairy Cousel Ayrshire Sale, Syracuse, NY April 14, 2012 - Wisconsin Spring Sale, Neillsville, WI April 21, 2012 - Pennsylvania Spring Sale at Plum Bottom Farm, Belleville, PA April 28, 2012 - Vermont Spring Sale, Rutland, VT May 12, 2012 - Sharwards Milking Herd & Bred Heifer Dis- persal, at the farm, Guttenberg, IA June 24 - July 1, 2012 - Grand-View Select Tag Sale, at the farm, Cecil, WI June 30, 2012 - Grand National Ayrshire Sale, Appleton, WI SHOWS March 30, 2012 - Ohio Spring National Show, Columbus, OH April 13, 2012 - Kentucky National Show, Louisville, KY April 14, 2012 - New York Spring Dairy Carousel Ayrshire Show, Syracuse, NY July 24, 2012 - Wisconsin State Show, Marshfield, WI July 28, 2012 - Ohio State Fair Jr. Ayrshire Show, Colum- bus, OHI July 30, 2012 - Ohio State Fair Open Ayrshire Show, Co- lumbus, OH August 12, 2012 - Massachusetts All Breeds Champion- ship Show September 10, 2012 - Western National Show, Puyallup, WA September 17, 2012 - Mid-Atlantic National Junior Show, Harrisburg, PA September 18, 2012 - Mid-Atlantic National Show (Heifer Classes), Harrisburg, PA September 19, 2012 - Mid-Atlantic National Show (Cow Classes), Harrisburg, PA September 20, 2012 - Eastern States National Show, West Springfield, MA October 2 , 2012 - International Ayrshire National Show at World Dairy Expo, Madison, WI November 3, 2012 - Southern National Junior Show, Lou- isville, KY November 6, 2012 - Southern National Show, Louisville, KY

The National Ayrshire Youth Fund is extremely vital to our or-ganization. Through the youth fund, the National Ayrshire Youth Committee sponsors Ayrshire junior programs such as quiz bowl, record book, outstanding youth, and princess contests; scholar-ships, junior production awards, junior type classification awards, national junior shows and much more. In addition, they support industry-wide events with recognitions and awards such as dairy judging contests, national 4-H achievement luncheons and other requests that come before them. To support these activities, fund-raising is essential. You can help!

Hello to all Ayrshire youth; new members, young enthusiasts or old enough to be in your last years as a junior. I am thrilled and honored to be selected as the president of this fi rst Ayrshire youth board. Although we have not done much as of now I hope to make changes, and get things started, and up and going for the youth of the future in these next few months. Wether you own or lease Ayrshires and have had them for your whole life or just a few months, it is something to be proud of. Hold your head high against the other breeders and love the breed that you walk to the barn to see everyday. Let Ayrshires inspire you and create a lifelong passion. With their vigorous and nosey personalities and the eye appeal in the fi elds from the variations of colors and patterns, they are a breed to be proud of and should make you feel great. Even though we have a breed with low numbers we have reason to be proud. Just remember that Ayrshires have vigorous and hardy personalities, have quality udders, and have superb grazing abilities. I encourage youth to be encouraged to have Ayrshires! Show, raise, and be involved with Ayrshires. The goal and purpose of this board is to raise youth involvement, gain full support from the ABA board, and allow the youth to have a stronger voice in their future with the Ayrshire breed. Please if you have any question come to me or another member of this board and we will help fi nd the answer.

WHY?

• The REWARDS Program can save you as much as 15 percent on your registrations, transfers, classification of females and Gold programs. Save 50 percent on registrations and transfers of animals born before January 1, 2012, and not yet registered when the RE-WARDS Program fees are paid.

• You may prepay the fees, then send in your registry and transfer applications at your convenience. You can classify females as many as two times per year. (Computer generated final scores are included. REWARDS herds do have the option of paying the difference between the computer generated final score method and other programs available if so desired.) All your production records will be placed on the performance files of the association on a monthly basis.

• Annual program fee covers registrations for animals born in the year of enrollment, all submitted during that year, classification of fe-males in the herd twice, plus enrollment in the Gold program. All other association programs and services will be at the regular individual program price.

REWARDS Program Reminder . . .The discount deadline to sign up for the 2012 REWARDS Program is December 31, 2011. The final deadline to sign up is March 31, 2012.

• nEW*** All males born July 1, 2011, or later are required to be DnA tested to receive a registration certificate. REWARDS herds registering males will only pay the DnA testing fee of $45 per male registered.

• Enrolled herds must meet a minimum Data Collection Rating (DCR) by DHI of 86 or better to be eligible for production awards.

HOW?

• Enroll now to qualify for 2012. Your ap-plication must be received by December 31, 2011, to qualify for the 5% cash discount. No REWARDS applications will be accepted after March 31, 2012.

• You must be an ABA member as the pro-gram is an exclusive member benefit.

• The annual program fee is $100, plus $16 per milking age female.

• An additional 5 percent discount will be given if you own 51 cows or more, and increased to 10 percent for 101 cows and 15 percent at 201 cows.

• Enrollment is simple — just send an ap-plication with a copy of your DHI test sheet

that shows the number of milking age females in your herd.

• Enrollment payment can be made by credit card, check or by milk check assignment. If you choose to pay by milk check assignment, it will be prorated on a monthly schedule, but you must agree to a maximum of 12 months assign-ment (one calendar year) or to pay the balance if milk sales are discontinued for any reason. In addition, if the milk check assignment is started after one or more months have passed in the year, the initial month(s) fee must be submit-ted with the enrollment form. If a milk check assignment is established, no discount will be provided for early enrollment.

• Animals owned by others housed in a REWARDS herd will be accepted as long as the primary herd has listed all cows in the herd at sign up and paid the full fee. The animals will be listed as one herd.

• No refunds will be provided.
