SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES & TECHNOLOGY

Agriculture played a vital role being sources of livelihood, contribution to national revenue, supply of food as well as fodder, significance to the international trade, marketable surplus, sourceof raw material, significance in transport, foreign exchange resources, great employment opportunities, economic development, source of saving, food security etc. Despite tremendous progress made byIndia in the field of industry and services, agriculture continues to play a pivotal role in India’s 2trillion economies. Nearly 58 per cent of Indian house hold depends on farming. Agriculture, remaina key contributor to India’s economic development not only by its share of the Gross DomesticProduct (GDP), but also as a drive for industrial growth by producing critical raw material and byfunneling, saving and consumption behaviour on which the sales of many industrial products depend.

Agriculture as a concept has grown as well. A decade or two back, it was associated solelywith the production of basic crops (Cereals, Millets, Pulses, Oil crops, Fiber Crops, Sugarcane,Cottons and Potato). Modern agriculture includes forestry, bee keeping, mushroom production, poultry, dairy, fishery and Hi-tech horticulture production including Plantation and Medicinal &Aromatic Plants.

Due to limited natural resources viz., shrinking of cultivable land area, depletion in water level, poor’s soil health and heavy demography pressure, a vast majority of poor, uneducated andunderutilized human resources, our cities are becoming increasingly un-sustainable. Peri-urbancultivation of Horticultural crops is one of the solutions to convert urban poor to being employedwhile at the same time improving the built environment. Keeping in view the importance of agriculturein general and horticulture in particular university opened new school known as School of AgriculturalSciences & Technology (SAST), which came into being in academic session 2017-18 with followingdepartments.
