WELCOME

Credit Suisse warmly welcomes you to this program of Bach Concertos, in which the Sydney Symphony Orchestra is joined by Adele Anthony and Gil Shaham.

After the monumental achievement of the SSO’s recent performances of Tristan und Isolde, this concert offers music-making on a more intimate scale. You’ll hear two soloists who are partners in life as well as in music, and just the strings of the SSO, performing music that evokes the world of aristocratic salons.

The music itself is by the unquestioned master of classical music, a composer venerated by so many musicians since: Johann Sebastian Bach. To listen to his concertos is to listen to perfection, and it is a great pleasure to have played a part in helping to make these performances one of the highlights of the SSO season.

We hope this concert will leave you inspired by great music and great music-making and we look forward to seeing you at many concerts in the future.

ABOUT THE MUSIC

The Violin Concertos of Johann Sebastian Bach

The theologian Karl Barth once suggested, fancifully, that in heaven the official music for worship is Bach’s, whereas the angels in off duty hours, for their own pleasure, play Mozart. Now that he is there, perhaps he has discovered that the angels also play music like that heard in this concert. Someone has said that the slow movement of Bach’s Concerto for two violins is the kind of music the calm-faced angels of Fra Angelico’s pictures must have played. Another musical theologian, Albert Schweitzer, in his study of Bach, gave up the duty of analysis when faced with the violin concertos: ‘We must put them,’ he writes, ‘in the category of which [Bach’s biographer] Forkel briefly and eloquently observes: “One can never say enough of their beauty.”’

Bach’s three surviving concertos for violin and strings were composed during his six years as Kapellmeister at the court of Anhalt-Cöthen (1717–1723). For the first time in his career, Bach was free of the duties of an organist and director of music for a church. The Prince was a good amateur musician who, as Bach said, ‘not only loved but knew music’. As a Calvinist, this Prince kept the music for his chapel simple, and Bach’s main task was to provide instrumental music for concerts. Many of his finest concerted instrumental works were written for the court’s 17 players. His violin concertos, the Brandenburg Concertos and the works for unaccompanied violin and cello are all thought to date from these years. Two outstanding violinists, Joseph Spiess and Martin Friedrich Marcus, had been imported from Berlin to Cöthen. It was probably for them that Bach composed the Double Violin Concerto BWV 1043.

We know some of Bach’s violin concertos are lost, because practically all Bach’s harpsichord concertos show evidence of having been transcribed by him from concertos which were originally for violin. Only two solo concertos for violin, in A minor (BWV 1041) and E major (BWV 1042), have come down to us in their original form. Their solo parts are thought to have been intended for Spiess, the leader of the Cöthen orchestra.

The style of these concertos is modelled on the Italian form of which Vivaldi is the leading representative. During his time at Weimar, Bach (who for a time served as a violinist in the Duke’s orchestra) had become familiar with Vivaldi’s

This portrait of Bach by Elias Gottlob Haussmann was recently returned to the city of Leipzig, having spent more than 60 years in the living room of an American philanthropist.

concertos, and arranged some for keyboard alone. Their influence on his own concertos is clear, first in the external form: three movements in the pattern fast–slow–fast.

Comparative evaluations can be dangerously subjective, but it is hard to resist the conclusion that the greatness of Bach’s violin concertos lies in how he transcends his models. Bach’s bold openings are Vivaldian in outline. Soon, however, it is clear that the motives being presented will not keep to their respective proponents – soloist and ensemble – but will invade each other in a multi-voiced texture of a complexity undreamt of by Vivaldi.

Brandenburg Concerto No.6 in B flat, BWV 1051Allegro Adagio ma non troppo Allegro

In May 1721 Bach sent six concertos to the Margrave of Brandenburg, in a presentation copy with a dedication. The concertos were probably composed for the particular players Bach had available in Cöthen, since they vary widely in their scoring and require forces not available in the Margrave’s orchestra. The great 19th-century Bach scholar, Spitta, started referring to the six concertos in shorthand by the name of their dedicatee, as ‘the Brandenburg Concertos’.

Bach presented a widely contrasted selection of his best works in the concerto genre. Among the six are concertos of very different types. Some (Nos. 2, 4 and 5) are not dissimilar in form to Bach’s violin concertos. The other three are unlike that model, in varying ways.

Many have found Brandenburg No.6 the most distinctively memorable and emotionally affecting of the six. The tone colour due to the absence of violins, the higher and intermediate parts being played by deeper toned violas and violas da gamba, makes the music rather meditative, and almost Brahmsian-sounding (no accident: Brahms knew his Bach). This is especially the case when, as in this performance, the gamba parts are played on cellos, which balance better with modern string instruments.

Page 8: BACH CONCERTOS - d32h38l3ag6ns6.cloudfront.net Books... · Bach Concertos JS BACH Brandenburg Concerto No.6, BWV 1051 JS BACH Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041* JS BACH Violin

…distinctively memorable and emotionally affecting…

In the slow movement the violas come into their own in a dialogue recalling that of the solo violins in Bach’s Double Concerto. This is very inward music, almost solemn in its dance rhythms, those of the sarabande. It would not be out of place in a concerto for two violas. The outer movements are more ambivalent – and there lies their fascination. The strict canon of the violas in the opening movement has been found humorous, even comic – a response which may seem surprising, but is not new. Hubert Parry, writing on Bach around 1900, found this music ‘weird and picturesque’. Perhaps Romantics past and present listen to music with fresher ears than those intimidated by musicological science.

Bach’s Brandenburg ConcertosAs a set, the Brandenburg Concertos are a testimony to Bach’s skill and a catalogue of his range as an instrumental composer. The carefully copied presentation score of ‘Six Concerts avec plusieurs instruments’ sent to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg, in 1721 contained the obligatory ingratiating dedication, reminding the Margrave of his ‘commission’ from several years before. (‘…you did me the honour to request that I send you some of my compositions…’ writes Bach.) There is no evidence, however, that Bach was paid or even thanked; the presentation did not win Bach the patronage he sought and it remained untouched in the Margrave’s library until after his death in 1734 when it was assembled with other manuscripts for sale in a job lot of ‘77 concertos by different masters’.

Perhaps we owe the survival of a complete score to the Margrave’s apparent indifference. And the Margrave owes his undeserved immortality to 19th-century Bach scholar Philipp Spitta, who in 1873 first referred to the ‘Concertos for several instruments’ by the name of their dedicatee. Since then the ‘Brandenburg Concertos’ have fulfilled Albert Schweitzer’s prophecy: ‘these works are destined to become part of our national heritage in the same way as the symphonies of Beethoven.’

Violin Concerto in E, BWV 1042Allegro – Adagio – Allegro Adagio Allegro assai

Adele Anthony violin

Bach’s bold opening, an upward-striding, fanfare-like arpeggio, is Vivaldian in its outline. Soon, however, it is clear that the motives will not stay with their respective proponents – soloist and tutti (ensemble) – but will invade each other in many-voiced complexity undreamt of by Vivaldi. Only the continuation of the main theme in the fast repeated notes of the tutti violins remains exclusively the province of the tutti.

Soon Bach begins to spin his movement out of that favourite device of Baroque composers, the sequence (repetition of the same phrase at a different pitch). Bach’s sequences are especially exciting and cumulative as they range through different keys, preserving almost all the while the bounce of an underlying dance rhythm. The solo violin’s figuration is often cast in an accompanying role. There is a series of short developments between the returns to the main theme, including a section in the relative minor key, until the momentum is broken by an extended Adagio cadence in G minor, before the reprise begins – a moment of reflection.

As in the A minor Concerto and the Concerto for two violins (Bach’s only other surviving violin concertos), the core of this concerto is a slow movement of quite unusual expressivity. The slow movements of the solo concertos have sent commentators groping for psychological analogies: a dialogue in which the ground bass ostinato of the lower strings remains ‘obsessed’ with its single figure, while the solo soars with an expressive development of the ‘trouble’ of the bass – so free that its music has been compared to the gliding or hovering of a bird, or to ‘the suave authority of a trained dancer’.

The final movement is a dance-like rondo. Here the Vivaldian model is closely followed in that the material of the orchestral ritornello (the recurring theme) always remains the same. The main interest in the episodes lies in the technical feats of the soloist, breaking into figuration of ever-greater liveliness – never of great difficulty, but showing, as does the whole concerto, Bach’s grasp of the expressive potential of the violin.

The Concert (1741) by Pietro Longhi.

In this concert the A minor concerto will precede the E major.

Page 10: BACH CONCERTOS - d32h38l3ag6ns6.cloudfront.net Books... · Bach Concertos JS BACH Brandenburg Concerto No.6, BWV 1051 JS BACH Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041* JS BACH Violin

Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041[Allegro] Andante Allegro assai

Gil Shaham violin

The A minor concerto also exists in a later adaptation as a keyboard concerto, in G minor. The ritornello – in other words the recurring passage which contains the most important thematic material of the first movement – is propelled rhythmically by the brusque pair of notes with which it opens, and which provides markers for its returns and new episodes. The soloist’s material tends to the expressive, whereas that of the E major concerto is assertive and energetic.

In the slow movement the change to the relative major key enables a somewhat more forceful thematic outline (whereas the shift to the minor in the E major concerto enables more expressivity). Not that deep expression is lacking in either slow movement…

The final movement of the A minor concerto is shaped by a returning dance-like theme, a kind of jig. It is first exposed by the whole band, in fugal imitation. The soloist enters with a new theme, related, but differing in character through its wider intervals and freer scope for virtuosic elaboration.

Concerto in D minor for two violins, BWV 1043Vivace Largo ma non tanto Allegro

Adele Anthony and Gil Shaham violins

The opening theme of Bach’s Double Violin Concerto may be borrowed from Vivaldi’s Op.1 No.11. Yet how different is Bach’s opening from most of Vivaldi’s! In place of Vivaldi’s fiery and assertive unisons Bach presents his ideas in muscular counterpoint, with a superbly active bass line, interweaving parts, and rhythmic drive helped by uneven phrase lengths. Bach’s adaptation of his model presents a contrast between Vivaldi’s Latin sensuality and Bach’s Northern sensibility and argumentativeness. What remains like Vivaldi is the way the texture clears for the entries of the soloists, with their wide leaps and interchanging roles.

The heart-easing singing of the soloists in the slow movement distracts anyone but a scholar from noticing how it is put together, out of typically Baroque formulae: descending scales, rising and falling sequences, and repeated arpeggios as ostinatos. To refresh the ear after so much sustained playing Bach writes a transition in detached notes, leading towards a climax of intensity.

The motor-like energy of the concluding movement is almost all derived from a three-note figure, heard at the beginning. Eventually two other figures come to join it: powerful, rich chords, and a rising and falling six-note theme of wider intervals. All this material is constantly exchanged between the soloists and the full ensemble – rewarding music for all the angels to play.

GIL SHAHAM

If you were lucky enough to hear Gil Shaham play the gorgeous Barber Violin Concerto in June, you might be tempted by Volume 1 of his series 1930s Violin Concertos (released on his own label). In a ‘dream program’ the Barber keeps company with the concertos by Alban Berg, Igor Stravinsky and Benjamin Britten and the Concerto funebre for violin and strings by Karl Amadeus Hartmann. The Barber is accompanied by the New York Philharmonic and David Robertson. Other collaborators on this 2CD set: Staatskapelle Dresden, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, conductor Juanjo Mena and the Sejong Soloists.

ADELE ANTHONY

Adele Anthony’s concerto recordings include Philip Glass and the Nielsen concerto, but if we had to pick one it would be her pairing of Ross Edwards’ Maninyas and the Sibelius concerto, accompanied by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Arvo Volmer. Not only do you get an impressive performance of a repertoire staple but an extraordinarily appealing work by a major Australian composer.

Adele Anthony was born in Tasmania and grew up in South Australia. She made her concert debut with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in 1983 and at the age of 13 was the youngest winner of the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition (now the Young Performers Awards), during which she performed the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and subsequently the Tchaikovsky concerto in a live national telecast.

Until 1987, she studied with Beryl Kimber at the Elder Conservatorium of the University of Adelaide, then continued her studies at the Juilliard School in New York, where she worked with the eminent teachers Dorothy DeLay, Felix Galimir and Hyo Kang. In 1990 the National Arts Club in New York invited her to perform at the presentation of the Medal of Honor to Zubin Mehta.

Since her triumph at the 1996 Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition in Denmark, she has enjoyed an acclaimed and expanding international career. Performing as a soloist with orchestra and in recital, as well as being active in chamber music, she has appeared throughout North America, Europe, India and Asia, as well as in Australia, where she has performed with all six of the major Australian symphony orchestras. She holds numerous awards and prizes, including awards from the Australia Council, the South Australian Government and The Queen’s Trust.

Her collaborations with Gil Shaham have included a recording and concerts in the United States and Spain marking the centenary in 2008 of the death of legendary Spanish violinist and composer Pablo Sarasate. This program was broadcast nationally on American PBS, as part of its Live from Lincoln Center Series, and was Adele Anthony’s second appearance in the series, following the Emmy Award-winning Lincoln Center Celebrates Balanchine in 2004.

Her recordings include Philip Glass’s Violin Concerto No.1 with the Ulster Orchestra and Takuo Yuasa, a Schubert recital disc with pianist Jonathan Feldman, and a recording with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Arvo Volmer of the Sibelius concerto and Ross Edwards’ Maninyas. With Gil Shaham she has also recorded Arvo Pärt’s Tabula rasa.

Adele Anthony performs on an Antonio Stradivarius violin, crafted in 1728.

Gil Shahamviolin and director

Gil Shaham is one of the foremost violinists of our time: his flawless technique combined with his inimitable warmth and generosity of spirit has solidified his renown as an American master. Highlights of his 2014–15 season have included a Parisian-themed gala with the Seattle Symphony, and with the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas performances of Mozart’s ‘Turkish’ concerto and Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto, the latter on a tour that included Carnegie Hall. The Prokofiev is one of the works showcased in his long-term exploration of violin concertos of the 1930s.

In addition to giving the premiere performances of a new concerto by David Bruce with the San Diego Symphony, he has also given concerto performances in Philadelphia, Berlin, London, Dallas, Tokyo, Canada and Luxembourg. In recital, he has presented Bach’s solo sonatas and partitas at Chicago’s Symphony Center, LA’s Disney Hall and other venues in a multimedia collaboration with photographer and video artist David Michalek.

He has more than two dozen concerto and solo recordings to his name, earning him multiple Grammys, a Grand Prix du Disque, Diapason d’Or, and a Gramophone Editor’s Choice. His recent recordings are issued on the Canary Classics label, which he founded in 2004.

These include 1930s Violin Concertos Vol.1, recordings of the Haydn violin concertos and Mendelssohn’s Octet with the Sejong Soloists, Nigunim: Hebrew Melodies, Sarasate: Virtuoso Violin Works, Elgar’s Violin Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and David Zinman, and, most recently, JS Bach’s complete sonatas and partitas for solo violin.

Gil Shaham was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1990, and in 2008 he received the coveted Avery Fisher Prize. In 2012 he was named Instrumentalist of the Year by Musical America, which cited the ‘special kind of humanism’ with which his performances are imbued. He plays the 1699 ‘Countess Polignac’ Stradivarius, and lives in New York City with his wife, violinist Adele Anthony, and their three children.

Gil Shaham’s previous engagement with the SSO was in 2001 when he played the Brahms concerto with Paavo Järvi conducting, and last week he performed the Barber Violin Concerto with conductor Bramwell Tovey.

SYDNEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Founded in 1932 by the Australian Broadcasting Commission, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra has evolved into one of the world’s finest orchestras as Sydney has become one of the world’s great cities.

Resident at the iconic Sydney Opera House, where it gives more than 100 performances each year, the SSO also performs in venues throughout Sydney and regional New South Wales. International tours to Europe, Asia and the USA – including three visits to China – have earned the orchestra worldwide recognition for artistic excellence.

The orchestra’s first Chief Conductor was Sir Eugene Goossens, appointed in 1947; he was followed by Nicolai Malko, Dean Dixon, Moshe Atzmon, Willem van Otterloo, Louis Frémaux, Sir Charles Mackerras, Zdenĕk Mácal, Stuart Challender, Edo de Waart and Gianluigi Gelmetti. Vladimir Ashkenazy was Principal Conductor from 2009 to 2013. The orchestra’s history also boasts collaborations with legendary figures

such as George Szell, Sir Thomas Beecham, Otto Klemperer and Igor Stravinsky.

The SSO’s award-winning education program is central to its commitment to the future of live symphonic music, developing audiences and engaging the participation of young people. The orchestra promotes the work of Australian composers through performances, recordings and its commissioning program. Recent premieres have included major works by Ross Edwards, Lee Bracegirdle, Gordon Kerry, Mary Finsterer, Nigel Westlake and Georges Lentz, and the orchestra’s recordings of music by Brett Dean have been released on both the BIS and SSO Live labels.

Other releases on the SSO Live label, established in 2006, include performances with Alexander Lazarev, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Sir Charles Mackerras, Vladimir Ashkenazy and David Robertson. In 2010–11 the orchestra made concert recordings of the complete Mahler symphonies with Ashkenazy, and has also released recordings of Rachmaninoff and Elgar orchestral works on the Exton/Triton labels, as well as numerous recordings on ABC Classics.

This is the second year of David Robertson’s tenure as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director.
