It’s hard to believe that it’s already time to go back to school. Vacations are winding down and students and parents are beginning to focus on the school year ahead. Our school district is full of amazing teachers and staff members who work very hard to provide the best learning environment for our students. Many exciting opportunities lay in front of us and your School Board is working hard to continue to make the Montrose and Olathe school district the best it can be.

We will begin the 2015-2016 school year with a new leader as our Superintendent. Steve Schiell comes to Montrose from Amery, Wisconsin where he

served as their Superintendent for 14 years. Steve has a strong background in budgeting, empowering teachers and developing relationships. He sets high expectations and is determined to make a positive change for everyone he comes in contact with. Steve is an avid Bronco fan who likes to sh, ski, walk and exercise. He and his wife Janet are excited to join our community and we are eager to have him in Montrose.

Our school district has so much to be proud of and lots to look forward to in the upcoming school year. Kudos to Montrose High School for achieving their goal of becoming one of the top 100 schools in

Colorado! Congrats to the FFA students in Olathe who are doing amazing things and winning national awards! With lots of energy, time and hard work, Centennial Middle school will begin its rst year as a School of Innovation which will bring some exciting changes to that campus. Every school in our district has successful programs, innovative teachers and great students. We encourage you to get involved and see what’s happening in your local schools.

Budgeting and decreasing enrollment are also areas we will be closely monitoring and adjusting as necessary. Student achievement remains a top

priority along with student and staff safety. Our goal of ensuring that all students have a safe and academically rigorous environment in which to learn is always at the forefront of our decision process.

The beginning of the school year is always a time to look forward to new opportunities to learn and grow. Your school board is enthusiastic about our new leader and the new energy he will bring to our district. Please don’t hesitate to contact Steve and get to know him. As always, the School Board members are hear for you. If you have any questions, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call.

It is with great excitement and anticipation that I am able to write my first letter to the Montrose and Olathe communities! I want to thank you, the community, for giving the School Board the very important responsibility of locating a Superintendent.

I am honored to have been selected as the next Superintendent of the Montrose County School District.

I would like to begin by telling you a little about myself. Our family has three children, all have graduated from college and have a job! A parent’s delight! My wife Janet, will be joining me later to be a part of the community. It takes a little time to make changes and wrap up our lives back in Wisconsin. This will be my 39th year in education. I have never been more enthusiastic to begin a new chapter in my career of educating our students.

The Montrose County School District is known throughout the state of Colorado as an outstanding school district. I hope to bring leadership that continues to enhance positive relationships between the school district and the community. Collaboration between the school district and the Montrose and Olathe communities is essential for student success. I believe that we are one school district and one community! We all have the same desires: to educate our students to the best of their abilities so they will be successful.

There are many challenges that a school district faces. It does not matter if you are in California, Florida, or Colorado. Challenges exist everywhere. Being successful with the challenges that we face is what makes education fun and rewarding. We will make a difference for your children and grandchildren; expect nothing less.

As parents, you have the expectation to know how your child is progressing. I encourage you to contact your child’s teacher(s) whenever you have a question. The teachers, support staff, the principal, specialists, administrators, and myself are a part of the team that is here to support your student.

When you see me throughout the schools and community, I hope you will stop me and say hello. My first day in the office will be August 3rd. The Montrose and Olathe communities have a proud tradition of high expectations. I will be asking for your support so that the school district can meet your expectations. A strong, vibrant community attracts families and brings children to the school district. We are connected, we are one community.

Once again THANK YOU for putting your trust in me. I wish everyone a fantastic school year!

Sincerely,

Stephen SchiellMotivate Collaborate Support Develop

viSta Charter School • 249-4470Vista is a choice school for students age 16-21 who

need flexibility due to life circumstances or issues at other schools. Due to the self-paced curriculum students can move quickly through courses to catch-up and they can also move slowly to make sure they are retaining the information necessary to achieve benchmarks. Vista is not in competition with the traditional high schools in our district. We work on building good relationships with our students, and we make sure they leave our program with a career plan, which may include enrolling in an institution for higher education.

If you are interested in attending Vista for the 2015-2016 school year or have additional questions call our office on August 10 for an appointment-(970) 249-4470.

ViSion: The After-School Programs empower our youth by collaborating with schools and families to create an environment that supports academic, social and emotional growth.

BaCK to SChool 2015-2016The Montrose Elementary After-School Program (serving Cottonwood, Johnson, Northside, Oak Grove and Pomona

Elementary Schools) is pleased to announce its 14th year of quality after school programming. Students will be offered academic, enrichment and recreation activities at our Pomona Elementary School site (serving

students from Cottonwood, Johnson, Northside, Oak Grove and Pomona). The Montrose Elementary School site is located at Pomona Elementary School. A bus will be provided to transport Montrose Elementary students to Pomona Elementary School for after-school activities.

Programs for students will take place Monday – Friday from student dismissal until 5:45 p.m. every day school is in session. Upon arrival, students check in and receive a snack. We follow the MCSD RE-1J calendar and change our classes each quarter. We offer two hours of sessions each day and three hours of sessions on Wednesdays to accommodate the early release. Announcements for specific program offerings will be sent home to students four times a year to correspond with the school quarters. Announcements are also available online: www.mcsd.org go to Departments; Curriculum and Instruction; After School Programs.

Programming begins the first day of school, Thursday, August 20, 2015, and ends the last full day of school. We hire licensed teachers, school district paraprofessionals, and highly qualified instructors from the community in efforts to improve students’ academic success and provide programming in a safe, structured environment that compliments and supports the regular school day. Programming is fee based. Students who qualify for free and reduced lunch also qualify for a discount for program fees. For more information please contact Sharon Penasa (970) 901-9344.

We look forward to seeing you 2015-2016!BELL SCHEdULE

Start times vary from school to school. Please check the school’s website for the correct start and stop times.

Colorado Law requires that children going to school be vaccinated against vaccine-preventable diseases. Our district board policy supports the Colorado Law Immunization Requirements for school attendance. No student may attend school in August 2015 unless he/she has provided the school with an up-to-date immunization certificate or completed exemption form. The 2015-16 Immunization requirements are changing as of July 2015. Please refer to the 2015-16 Colorado Immunization requirement link on your child’s school webpage.
