Backing up pc files
Whether you only utilize computers for personal use or within your work, it is important that you
ensure you have the required security in order to keep your data safe. If your computer experiences
a malfunction, contracts a virus or a natural disaster strikes; your files, be it special photographs,
work documents or even your financial records could be lost in an instant with no way to retrieve
them. For this reason, all computer users should ensure that they invest in some form of backup for
their computer.

The main advantage of backing up your computer is that no matter what may happen to your
computer system, all required files will be saved in another location/system, making them easily
retrievable. Within a business environment, the implementation of a backup system can help your
business to survive and continue to function as normal should an error occur. Although there are
other, simpler forms of backup such as CD's and floppy discs, these can be easily lost or damaged,
making them a less reliable form of backup. Nevertheless, these can still be utilized as an additional
form of backup.
We can often fall into the trap of "But I have an anti-virus system installed within my PC, I'm at very
low risk of experiencing a malfunction"; which can cause many to completely disregard the benefits
of investing in a backup system. Although it may be true that you may never require the need of
your backup files, should something unexpected happen to your computer, you will be rest assured
that you have additional copies of any valuable files and data. What's more, you are not required to
backup every file on your computer; you can opt to backup just those which hold the most
importance. Your computer may contain irrelevant, miscellaneous files that would not be missed if
they were inadvertently deleted, so there is no need to fill up your backup system with these files.
However, certain files such as photographs and personal data files cannot be replaced once lost
unless you have a backup system in place. A backup system will ensure they are saved in another
safe location where they can be easily retrieved, added back onto your computer and kept secure.
As stated previously, more traditional forms of backup include floppy discs or the modern twist on
these, re-writeable compact discs. Although these are a relatively cost-effective means of backup,
they can be unreliable as even minor damage can cause your data to be irretrievable or lost
altogether. In order to combat many of the problems associated with these minute forms of backup,
CD-R's have been developed which offer an extremely secure and sensible method of backup for
your files. By investing in a CD-R, you will be able to store hundreds of files in one location,
compared to floppy discs or CD's which only allow for a few files of a certain size. What's more, your
data can be saved in mere minutes, with advances being made in this type of equipment being made
every year.
Along with being an efficient and secure method of backup, CD-R's can also save you a great deal of
space. Rather than requiring storage space for a vast number of floppy discs, all your files will be
saved on one, compact unit which helps save space and time when it comes to searching for specific
files. If you would prefer a more technological form of backup, you could also utilize online backup,
which does not require the need of any discs or storage units within your home or workplace as all
files are stored onto an external server (provided by your service provider) and you can then access
these files via the web. This is an extremely popular form of backup within business as more than
one user can access the same files at the same time by use of a password and user name login
system. You can also save different varieties of the same file so they can be used again at a later
date.
No matter which method of backup you choose for your files, it is advisable that you invest in a
backup system in order to keep all your files safe and secure. As many of us are only too aware,
information technology- although highly innovative, can be incredibly temperamental at times and
so by planning ahead for any potential mishap, we can save our files and eliminate any future stress.
