TT he students were calling for an end to Emory’s relationship with Sodexo af-ter numerous human rights reports have cited the company for violations

worldwide. After a March 2010 letter to Presi-dent Wagner and an April 2011 editorial in The Emory Wheel, the rally was held to pressure the administration into engaging in a discussion of the issue. Protesters proceeded to hold a sit-in in the administration building until 8 p.m. that night when they moved back to the quad after multi-ple warnings that they were violating university policy and were trespassing. After five days of camping on the quad, sev-

en Atlanta-area college students, including four Emory graduate students, were arrested after failing to comply with requests that they leave the quad. While they had received a permit to hold their rally early in the week, they had not received permission to set up their camp. During their occupation of the area, sup-porters drifted in and out between classes and a handful slept there each night. Emory held a university-wide discussion of the issue in late May. The Emory arrests were part of a wave of spring protests against Sodexo that included Ohio State University and the University of Washington and led to 71 ar-rests total.

Chairman of activist group TransAfrica and actor, Danny Glover, released a 2011 report titled, “Voices for Change: Sodexo Workers From Five Countries Speak Out.”He interviewed Sodexo employees from the US, France, Morocco, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia. The segments of the report were, “Disregard for Human Rights and Dignity of Workers,” “Payment of Poverty Wages All Over the World,” “Concerns That Sodexo Workers Are Not Always Paid for All the Hours They Work,” and “Sodexo Interferes with Workers’ Right to Freedom of Association.”

ThiS SPring, one of Emory University’s old-est sororities, Alpha Epsilon Phi, had its char-ter revoked after allegations of hazing surfaced according to The Emory Wheel. After the allegations were made, they were ordered to “cease and desist” which still al-lowed them to hold chapter meetings and con-tinue with community service events as usual. however, all new member and social events had to be put on hold. On March 28, they accepted responsibility for their actions and their charter was then re-voked. They appealed what was seen as an un-

reasonably harsh punishment considering they had no previous disciplinary issues and offered an extended period of social probation and an-ti-hazing educational programming along with other measures. Their appeal was denied as the university has a zero tolerance policy on haz-ing and AEPhi’s hazing was found to be ongo-ing and systematic. Emory’s chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi has been on campus since 1959 as have been Alpha Delta Pi and Kappa Alpha Theta. The sorority will have the chance to come back to campus in 2015.

in EArly JUnE, Johns hopkins graduate and rising third-year Emory law student, ilan gra-pel, 27, was arrested in Egypt on suspicions that he is an israeli spy. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitu-tion, the semi-official Egyptian daily, Al-Ahram identified him as a, “Mossad officer who tried to sabotage the Egyptian revolution.” Originally from new york and with a dual American-israeli citizenship, grapel served in the israeli army and was injured in combat in the 2006 lebanon War, according to Creative Loafing. grapel had gone to Cairo in May to intern with the aid group, Saint Andrew’s refugee Services. Both his mother, irene grapel and

representative gary Ackerman (D-n.y.) say that he may have prompted suspicions because of Facebook pictures he has up of him in his israeli uniform. “i don’t think a Mossad agent would post things on Facebook, travel under his own name and get a grant from law school to travel. This is a big misunderstanding,” rebecca Peskin, another Emory law School student, told the Associated Press. in contact with his parents, he has stated that he is being treated well and has not been harmed. As of August 28, 2011, the United States was increasing pressure on Egypt by threatening to reduce aid unless Cairo released grapel.

Dr. MOOrE is a role model who earned an Ameri-can Medical Association award by believing that “no action [is] too small to introduce hope and possibili-ties to those who are too often underserved.” he started with “Tupperware clinics,” where he drove to the poorest neighborhoods in Atlanta with medical supplies in Tupperware in the back of his car. now, his free mobile medical clinic has expanded into the nonprofit health Education As-sessment and leadership (hEAl), which treats more than 6,000 patients per year. While receiving the AMA award, Dr. Moore stated, “in accepting this award, i accept the challenge and responsibility to do everything possible to provide great care for the underserved.” Construction is currently underway on a new $2.5 million, 16,000 square-foot medical facility for the hEAling Center.

AnThOny FrAnCiS earned his Ph.D. in Artificial intelligence from the College of Computing at gT. he’s a software developer for google but his passion is for science fiction. he recently won the 2011 EPiC Award for his novel Frost Moon. This is the first novel of his new “urban fantasy trilogy.” he explains that his writing style “combines [his] love of hard science, fantastic magic, alternative culture, and strong, feisty wom-en.” The novels explore the underside of Atlanta with “each book in the series highlight[ing] a new form of magic based on alternative culture practices like tattooing, graffiti or firespinning, and...a new supernatural creature.” Mary Axford, librarian at Tech, described it as, “an excellent first novel cen-tering on Dakota Frost, a tattoo artist who creates magical tattoos with herself as her best canvas.”

On JUnE 26, 2011, a junior at Emory won Best Director and Best Picture at the 2011 interna-tional Campus Movie Fest. ien Chi qualified for the competition by winning the grand prize in Emory’s Campus Movie Fest. Chi’s film was five minutes long and titled, “Tick Tock.” it was created in one take and Chi was able to secure funding for the project. The funding allowed him to hold a casting-call, and hire real actors for it. Chi explains, “After i wrote the screenplay, out of a rush of excitement, i start-ed a Kickstarter campaign to raise money. i ended up raising a bit over $2,000 from 33 backers. This film was the first time i ever did legitimate profes-sional casting...The final film is one that we’re all proud of. it’s a film really packed with informa-tion.”
