What a fabulous time we had at our Holiday Auction luncheon. There were many great silent auction items and a few live auction items. The most popular live item was the wonderful dinner for eight at Leslie and Don Kazarian’s home. WOW, what a prize that was. Thank you to our guest speakers. Sara Green, a United States Marine, shared her joy and amazement upon receiving an airline ticket to spend Christmas at home — thanks to the BCYC Special Forces Home for Christmas fund. Our other speaker was Cheri Curry, who told a very moving example and experience of the Corinthian Spirit. A big thank you to Teri Leigh for chairing this very successful event, along with her committee of Pattie Brandt, Roxanne Dimaggio, and Rebecca Mote. Our beautiful table decorations, created by Catherine Miller, added to the holiday atmosphere – thank you, Catherine. We have planned a number of awesome events for 2020. January was our Woman of the Year luncheon with guest speaker Lauri Moffett and BCYC Women of the Year award winners sharing their stories. Our fabulous fashion show honoring the lady Marines and Marine wives, Feb. 13, will be an event not to miss. When you make your reservation for this event, please state if you would like to sponsor a Marine or a Marine spouse. Our High Tea luncheon, March 13, with our wonderful silver tea service, just might include a famous O’Connor trifle!

I look forward to seeing you at our 2020 events.

Happy New Year from the Food and Beverage Committee. Congratulations and a HUGE thank you to Chef Georges Rapicault and his culinary team for all the delicious food served over the holidays. It takes a lot of time and teamwork to prepare so many food options for so many people, for so many events. Also, thanks to the service staff who worked so hard to keep our glasses filled and the friendly service they provided, as well as for cleaning up after our party time was over. We hope you enjoyed Sunday Night Suppers in January with the Italian theme. In February, Chef Georges will prepare his favorite French dishes for Sunday Night Suppers. Bring your friends and join us for a lovely evening of relaxation in the romantic Fireside Lounge. Some things to keep in mind as we move forward in 2020:

•Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon produced by ChuckWagner, Caymus Vineyards owner and winemaker, is now available for purchase by the glass

•Ifyoumakeareservationforaclubeventanddonotshow or cancel the reservation at least three open club days before the event, you will be charged for the price of the event multiplied by the number of reservations made

•TheColumbiaRoommenuisavailableatallSundayNight Suppers as an additional choice

•If youdonothave a reservation for a club event orSunday Night Supper, you run the risk of not being able to participate if the event is sold out

We are looking forward to 2020 as we develop goals for BCYC food and beverage. If you have any suggestions or questions, bring them to us or join us at our Food and Beverage Committee meetings on a new night. They will be held on the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. We look forward to having General Manager Scott Jones join us as we prepare plans for the coming year at BCYC, and we welcome participation from all members.

2020 is finally here, and with the new year come many opportunities to get involved at the club and more events to look forward to. This winter, the Junior Board of Directors has worked hard to plan fundraising and community service events. One of our favorites, Poker Night, occurred on January 24, and was very successful, full of laughter and fun!

The new year is also time to set resolutions. This year, one of mine is to spend more leisure time on the water. I rarely go out sailing purely for the fun of it. Most of the time, I sail only for practice or regattas. When I was a kid, my favorite pastime was to cruise around in my sabot. However, as I’ve grown older and gotten busier, it’s been a challenge to get out on the water when it’s not related to racing. In 2020, I hope to enjoy more time on the water with friends.

In winter months, the fishing in our area slows down a bit. The tuna stay down deep and the yellowtail head south. A great alternative during this time is to try for rockfish and bottom fishing.

Catching a ride on one of the local fishing charters out of Newport Landing will get you into some red snapper, white fish, sculpin and some large sheepshead, if lucky. Another option that any person in the club can do is fish in the harbor. Fishing the break walls of the harbor and the bridges during tide changes can be great for spotted bay bass, striped bass and even halibut.

An easy set-up for this type of fishing is light tackle (20-pound line or less) with a 3/4-ounce sliding weight. Tie on a swivel, then Fluro leader (no longer than two feet and max 15–pound line) and a small #2 hook, and you should be good to go! I find the best bait to be bloodworms, frozen squid or live sardines if you can get them.

During the month, if you’re having luck, shoot me a photo at [email protected] of your catch and we will post some of these each month. Tight lines and keep fishing.

Perfect Vision

ActivitiesCleve Sproule [email protected]

It’s 2020, and BCYC has the perfect vision for activities at the club – friends, fun and food.

In 2019, we had too much fun, and 2020 will knock your socks off. The holidays were beautiful, New Year’s Eve earned an Academy Award for fun and the 2020 activities event calendar will make you want to dance, laugh, eat, drink and keep you coming back for more.

The Super Bowl event will be Sunday, Feb. 2. We guarantee a winner at every table and fun that will last till our next event. Twelve days later, Feb. 14, is our signature Valentine’s Day dinner. Bring your significant other or the one you love to enjoy a special night featuring the soft jazz sounds of Andrea Miller.

Just as we promised, another highlight of the season is the Commodore’s Ball, Feb. 29. This will be an event to remember with pre-ball cocktail parties, dinner and dancing.

Join us at the Activities Committee meeting on the second Wednesday of the month to help plan these great events.

Happy New Year

Vice CommodoreSandy [email protected]

Vice CommodoreRhonda Tolar

[email protected]

I’m looking forward to a great year and so proud and happy to be vice commodore this year! Chairing the Steering Committee meeting, attended by all BCYC committee chairs, I love watching and participating in the idea-sharing that takes place during these monthly meetings.

This year, I will also be involved with all water-based committees and activities. I am enjoying being the co-junior board advisor with Mark Groenhuyzen. We have some new plans and events for our juniors and families involved in sailing at our club.

Starting in February, Waterfront Manager Debbie Dunne will begin providing an informational email about marina and waterfront activities. This is designed to keep BCYC members informed about what is happening regarding a wide range of topics from marina upgrades to events on the water.

It is hard to believe it is already time to plan for and book the Commodore’s Cruise for 2021. Included in this edition of The Masthead are details about this cruise and how to get additional information. Tahiti is my favorite place to vacation and this will be a great opportunity to visit this amazing part of the world with our BCYC family.

Showboat runs March 25-29. This musical theater dinner show is fun to attend and a great opportunity to support your fellow BCYC members who are the cast and crew. This year’s show will star Commodore Ginny Lombardi as a principal in a high school musical reunion – tickets are on sale now.

We have a great new year ahead of us with many fun cruises, activities and more. Make plans to be an important part of it all!

As your rear commodore, I am pleased and excited to oversee and support all land-based committees. It will be interesting to see what the committees have planned for 2020!

I am also chairing the Commodore’s Ball celebrating Commodore Ginny Lombardi. What a special evening it will be. Your three lady commodores are co-chairing Showboat this year. Please make your reservation soon to get your favorite evening secured. Opening night is Wednesday, March 25, and the show runs through Saturday, March 28! The theme is High School Musical Reunion. Be prepared to see a wonderful show and your fellow members having a grand time!

The Junior Events Committee kicked off 2020 with our third annual Adult Game Night. This year, we partnered with the junior Board of Directors and their Poker Challenge versus the senior Board of Directors and staff commodores. With the help of Vice Commodore Rhonda Tolar, we transformed the club into a Las Vegas-style casino. The competitive spirit was very evident as participants got their game on. We played board and card games, poker and had some pretty intense rounds of giant Jenga.

The JEC has some super fun events planned this year. Thanks to Artesha Harvey, we will continue our Saturday yoga classes. Check the club event promos for Parents Night Out opportunities where we will offer childcare during select events. Once Summer hits, look for Sunday Funday Pop Up events at the pool. All members are invited and encouraged to attend. Lastly, if you are looking for a fun way to get involved at BCYC, let us know and we will add you to our committee email list.

All About Fun And Games in 2020

Anchors Aweigh – Rescue of BCYC’s

Beloved Anchor – 2001BCYC’s anchor, located at the main entrance to our club, was rescued by Tom Berry from the depths of San Diego Harbor. Tom was on a construction project laying cable from San Diego Harbor to Coronado Harbor when divers discovered the anchor from a late 1800s ship. The divers brought it aboard and it was delivered to Tom’s home in Newport Beach, where it was the focal point of his backyard for many years. When he moved, he asked his neighbors, Dick and Carol Wallace, if BCYC would be interested in acquiring this interesting piece of history from our coastal waters.

We immediately said that we wanted it, not knowing how we would move it from his backyard to the club. House Committee members Lyle Eisel, Dale Forester and Dick Wallace, with approval from Commodore Steve Tarantino, devised a plan and the anchor has been in its present location since 2001.

2020 – A Leap Year

Sail Fleet CaptainsPaul [email protected]

Julius Caesar was behind the origin of leap year in 45 BC. The early Romans had a 355-day calendar and to keep festivals occurring around the same season each year, a 22- or 23-day month was created every second year. He decided to simplify things and added days to different months of the year to create the 365-day calendar. Every fourth year following the 28th day of Februarius, one day was added, making every fourth year a leap year.

2020 starts off with the Angelman Series…three ocean races sailed over three months. For beginning racers, this race is all about longer distances between turning marks, a chance to lean back a bit and enjoy the coastal views.

SCYA’s Midwinter Regatta, Feb. 15-16, is two days (Saturday and Sunday) of windward/leeward racing for Harbor 20s. After eight races, the winner is announced and everyone goes home exhausted. Sounds like fun, right?

Be sure to mark your calendar for the longest-running BCYC race, the Bogart Series March 21-22. Sail to Avalon on Saturday, spend the night, and sail back on Sunday. Simply a lot of fun!

Finally, my annual request for a few good people to join Race Committee. If you like being on a boat and watching a race from a front row seat, contact me.

We have reserved cabanas in the pool area on Saturday for anyone who wants to relax by the pool or surf the lazy river. Oh, and for the young at heart, there is always the water slide for fun. Saturday evening, we will enjoy a barbecue dinner at Chaparral Country Club. This is always a popular cruise, so make your plans today to join us.

May 29-31, we will be cruising to Dana Point. Note the dates for this cruise as listed in the annual calendar has changed. This will be a wonderful weekend.
