CAPITAL REGION IMMIGRATION ORAL HISTORY PROJECTCAPITAL DISTRICT – Being initiated in 2015 by the International Center, the Capital Region Immigration Oral History Project will collect and pre-serve the fi rsthand interviews of Capital Region immigrants. ICCR will rely on staff , interns and trained community volunteers to conduct interviews to gather fi rst-hand stories about immigrant experiences. First-person narratives, regardless of how long ago, are enlightening and provide in-sight into individual immigrant stories. In addition to audio- and video-recorded interviews, a sampling of individuals interviewed will be pho-tographed and included in a proposed upcoming pictorial exhibit. COMMUNITY SWIM OPPORTUNITIESBALLSTON SPA – The Ballston Spa Aquatics Program is currently off ering opportunities for public use of the pool during adult lap swimming ses-sions, from 6:00-7:00am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:00pm. A family/open swim is also off ered on Saturday afternoons from 12:00-2:00pm. Additional opportunities are off ered throughout the year, including adult Aqua Cardio classes and a Learn-To-Swim program. The Community Swim Program is open to district students, families and community members. District residents need to show identifi cation and pay a $1.00 entrance fee to utilize the pool. Non-residents are admitted, as space allows, for a $2.00 fee. The pool is closed during school vacations, emergency cancellations (i.e. snow days or early dismissals) and when school activities necessitate closure. ADULT SPORTS AND FITNESS OPPORTUNITIESBALLSTON SPA – The Ballston Spa Community Education Program is currently offering adult sports from 8:00-10:00pm with Co-ed Indoor Soccer and Co-ed Volleyball held on Mondays and Men’s Basketball on Wednesdays. A 10-week session begins the week of January 5th and requires a $30 fee for school district residents. The popular Walk About program provides a safe, indoor walking course for those interested in a low impact fitness activity. The program continues through April when school is in session. A $15 registration fee is required for this program and non-residents are charged $18 to participate. Walkers may join the program at any time throughout the session. Pre-registration is required and fees are due at the begin-ning of each course. Those interested may register for courses by mail or in-person at the District Office, 70 Malta Avenue. BROOKSIDE MUSEUM TO CLOSE FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY
BALLSTON SPA – The Saratoga County Historical Society has announced that its headquarters, Brookside Museum, will be closed during the month of January. While the museum is closed to the public, much will be happening inside. The research library will be moving to a new space at the front of the building and our reception desk will be removed. A new gallery space will emerge from the construction, giving Brookside the opportunity to have more changing exhibi-tions. Brookside will reopen on Tuesday, February 3rd at-10am. The museum will host an opening reception on Friday, February 6th for the Living Resources Artwork Exhibit in the Long Room. Also re-opening that night will be Through the Lens of Time. The Saratoga County Historical Society at Brook-side is a non-profit organization located at 6 Charlton Street in Ballston Spa that inspires community memory by telling the story of Saratoga County through engaging exhibits and interactive programs. Brookside’s programs and services are made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO
STUTTERCAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stutter-ing. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stut-

NEMSAR is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, all volunteer search team located in Clifton Park. We search for lost people of all ages working with the NYS Police, County Sheriff, Local Police, Fire Departments, and the NYS DEC Forest Rangers. A love of the outdoors is a must for interested volunteers and we will provide all of the additional training to help you be-come a meaningful part of our search team. Also, if you’re not up to working in the woods we have several team positions that support our searches to include Radio Communications, Logistics, Equipment, and Vehicle Maintenance.

They supply handmade blankets and hats to children who are sick, homeless, grieving or traumatized throughout Saratoga, Albany and Rensselaer Counties. No sewing experience necessary. They also need donations of materials such as cotton fl annel, fabric, yardage or scraps, Po-lar fl eece, quilt batting, postage, old clean sheets, yarn and thread. MAKE MORNING WORKOUTS WORK
FOR YOUMany men and women struggle to find time to ex-ercise. If hectic schedules dominated by professional and personal commitments have made it difficult to make exercise part of your daily routine, you might want to consider skipping the snooze button so you can work out in the early morning hours.
Early morning workouts have their ups and downs. Glucose levels in the body tend to be low in the morn-ing, when many people wake up with a relatively empty stomach. Low blood glucose levels can cause feelings of nausea and weak-ness and possibly make you feel faint. In addition, since you likely aren’t moving much while you’re asleep, your joints and muscles are likely less mobile early in the morning than they are in the evening, which can make morning workouts dif-ficult and, if you don’t allow yourself more time to warm up, put your body at greater risk of injury. But morning workouts also can energize you throughout the day, and many people find it easier to
consistently exercise in the early mornings than at night, when distractions or long days at the office can affect your motivation to workout.
Early morning exercise rou-tines can be difficult to ad-just to, but there are some ways to make the adjust-ment to such regimens go more smoothly.
• Make sleep a priority. Pri-oritizing sleep makes it eas-ier to get out of bed in the morning, when you will face the daily temptation to hit the snooze button and roll over. But if you aren’t sleep deprived, you will find it eas-ier to skip the snooze phase of your morning routine and get right out of bed. Skip the late night talk shows and call it a night earlier, making sure you get between seven and eight hours of sleep each night. Once you establish a new sleep schedule, you will find it easier and easier to get up and hit the gym in the morning.
• Designate more time to warm up. Early morning workout routines require athletes to warm up more than they would when exer-cising at other times of the day. As previously noted, your body is perhaps at its least mobile right when you
get out of bed, so set aside more time to warm up when you workout in the morn-ings. Five to 10 minutes of light cardiovascular exer-cise before you begin your workout can be enough to increase your body tempera-ture and loosen your body up so it’s ready for exercise.
• Don’t go it alone. The bud-dy system is effective for many people regardless of when they exercise, but it can be especially beneficial for men and women who want to start working out in the morning. If someone is waiting for you at the gym or if your significant other is up and ready to go, you’re far less likely to skip a morning workout than you would be if you are going it alone.
• Eat at your own discretion. Some people simply cannot eat before a workout, while others find working out on an empty stomach makes them faint and weak. The problem many people who work out in the early morn-ing encounter with regard to eating before their workouts is they simply don’t have the time to eat and afford their body enough time to turn that meal or snack into fuel that will benefit their work-out. A study published in the Journal of Applied Physi-ology found that eating a meal 45 minutes before a moderate-intensity workout enhances exercise capabil-ity. But morning exercise enthusiasts typically find they do not have that spare 45 minutes to wait around while their bodies absorb a meal. Eating healthy be-fore exercise, and giving your body adequate time to absorb that meal, can defi-nitely fuel your workout. But if that 45 minutes ultimately compromises your ability to workout, you may want to have a glass of orange juice or a drink that contains car-bohydrates so your body has some fuel as you exercise.
Many adults find that morn-ings are the only times they can consistently exercise. Adjusting to such a routine can be difficult, but there are some ways to make that ad-justment easier.

Job Seekers Have Hope In The New Year
There’s a lot of talk these days about what jobs aren’t available. Editorials and blogs are often full of com-mentary about the perceived lack of jobs and/or sub-par salaries which threaten to keep a large segment of the populace in economic distress. Whether or not the claims are true, at least for some, there is op-portunity in 2015. If you are willing to show up for work on a regular basis, perform basic or skilled tasks with your hands or operate equipment, and you take pride in the knowledge that your handiwork will help revolutionize industries ranging all across the spec-trum from low to high tech applications, then you may have a decent-paying job waiting for you in one of Tech Valley’s manufacturing facilities. Area manufactur-ers and other firms have reported that they struggle to find good, dedicated employees and they are interested in hiring more people if they can find them. To some, my words may seem a bit strange, after all we are constantly hearing how tough the job market is, that wages are terrible, that people are fleeing the state, etc. It saddens me to hear of the negative press, because there is also a lot of good news out there and I would really like to help people connect with the opportunities that are available. The days are so short and dreary now that it is pretty easy for the gardener to feel a little down with spring so far away. One way that I shake off the midwinter blues is to spend some time in my south facing room enjoying whatever sunshine our short days can muster among the houseplants that spend the winter there. Regular readers have heard before about my collection of miniature geraniums. Rest assured, they’re all doing well and are responding to the slightly longer days with a burst of new growth and several are so happy with their situation that they’ve popped out a few buds. In a couple of weeks I’ll be enjoying a preview of summer when these little beauties burst into flower. Besides my collection of miniature geraniums, there are other flowering plants that have managed to find their way into my indoor garden. The African Violet is, without question, the most popular of all flowering houseplants. Their prolific blossoms and soft, fuzzy leaves have delighted indoor gardeners for years. We’ve all heard stories about great-grandma’s prized violet whose descendents are still grown and loved by current family members. The first requirement to consider for growing African Violets is light. Violets need very strong but indirect sunlight. Many folks find that a bright north-facing window is an ideal spot to grow African Violets. They’ll also thrive under fluorescent lights. The second requirement is temperature. They prefer a daytime temperature of at least 70 degrees and should remain above 64 degrees at night. Most folks don’t have too much trouble meeting the light and temperature needs of African Violets. The trickiest part of African Violet care is watering. Violets need to be kept lightly moist constantly and will not appreciate drying out completely. Realizing this, most folks overcompensate by keeping their Violets soggy wet (by leaving standing water in their saucers) which is even worse that letting them dry out. A nice, evenly moist soil is what we’re shooting for here. African Violets also like to be watered with tepid or room temperature water. Very cold water from the tap will shock them. When watering your African Violets, try not to get water on the leaves as this will result in an unsightly spotting. Some folks avoid this problem by pouring the water into a saucer placed under the pot. This is a fine method but make sure to drain any water that isn’t soaked up after a few minutes to avoid death from drowning. I like to feed my African violets Peter’s Brand African Violet Food (no, no relation) at one-quarter strength every time I water to keep them healthy and flowering. Wait until your violets are potbound before repotting. They will flower more if they feel a bit confined. Always put African Violets into shallow plastic or ceramic pots. Clay or terra cotta pots dry too quickly to be beneficial to African Violets. If you keep your house cooler than 64 degrees at night, you may have trouble keeping African Violets. A better choice for the cooler home would be a cousin of the African Violet, the Cape Primrose or Streptocarpus. Streptocarpus has the same indirect light requirement as African Violets but can tolerate temperatures as low as 50 degrees at night without ill effects. Like African Violets, Streptocarpus like to be kept evenly moist but is much more forgiving of accidental dryness. With moderate care, a Streptocarpus will thrive and flower for years. Unlike African Violets, Streptocarpus can get quite large if transplanted into larger size pots. If you really like to save money by keeping your thermostat turned down, there’s still a flowering plant option for your home….the Cyclamen. These tuberous plants thrive when nighttime temperatures drop below 60 degrees and prefer daytime temperatures that stay below 65 degrees. Keep your Cyclamen barely moist (never soggy). During the flowering period, feed with a ¼ strength solution of Miracle-Gro. If you can manage not to overwater your Cyclamen, it should be able to maintain a set of its unique inverted flowers for over three months! If your house is very dry and you want to provide a little extra humidity, place the plants in a gravel-filled tray and add water to the top of the gravel. Place your plants on the gravel so the evaporating moisture passes over the leaves. Be sure the pots are not actually sitting in the water. Remember, nothing kills a plant quicker than drowning. (NAPS)—According to some career experts, the holiday sea-son or any quiet time at work is a good time to plan, organize, refl ect on where you are in your career and where you would like to go.
“In overly hectic lives, career planning often gets moved to the back burner,” said Michael Bevis, director of Academic Aff airs for University of Phoenix and faculty member for the School of Business. “Many Americans feel unsatisfi ed and stagnant in their careers, and the only way to take action is to devote time to making a plan for change. This does not necessarily mean a career change, but often an adjustment in the way you approach your existing career.”
According to Bevis, job complacency should not be ignored because career satisfaction plays a major role in overall satis-faction. In fact, a national University of Phoenix survey con-ducted by Harris Poll found that nearly half of working adults in the U.S. gain equal or greater feelings of self-worth from their jobs and careers as they do from their personal lives, and 45 percent are still searching for the right career. Another
survey from the University shows that nearly two-thirds of all working adults say they currently have limited opportunities within their companies, but 53 percent acknowledge they should take charge by being more entrepreneurial in their careers.
Bevis agrees. “Being entrepreneurial means approaching your existing career with purpose, not relying on your em-ployer to manage your career,” he said. “Setting career goals, developing a strong personal brand and constantly looking for ways to grow and tie your responsibilities to the com-pany’s bottom line can help you succeed and feel more en-gaged in your career.”
Bevis says taking charge of your career takes planning. He suggests you use downtime to:
1. Learn as much as possible about your orga-nization, industry, and career growth opportunities.
2. Develop a strategic business plan to grow and improve your per-sonal brand within your organization.
3. Keep your personal brand current and sustainable by knowing how your skills and experience fi t into the big pic-ture of your organization.
4. Network with individuals who have diverse experiences.
5. Identify and engage with a mentor. This individual does not necessarily have to be in your own company. Find some-one who you admire professionally and whose success mir-rors your goals.
6. Identify and engage with a sponsor in your own compa-ny. This person can champion your success and advocate for your growth within the company.
7. Research options for continued learning. Take a class, pur-sue an advanced degree or research certifi cate and continu-ing education programs. With educational options growing more customized every day, it is easier than ever to fi nd ways to learn, grow and challenge yourself long after you graduate high school or earn a bachelor’s degree.
“Business education encourages students to think outside the box and be more entrepreneurial in their careers,” adds Bevis. “Employees at every level who approach their career as if they were entrepreneurs, with purpose and measurable goals, are often the happiest and most successful.”
