THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING ANIMALOVERSCAPITAL REGION AnimaLovers would like to thank the many individuals and companies in the Capital Region and beyond that supported our efforts in 2014, and especially those who contributed to our annual Holiday Appeal. The Holiday Ap-peal had special meaning to our many matchmakers, the volunteers that worked tirelessly to find the perfect home for each and every one of our cats. In 2014, the group found forever homes for nearly 400 cats and kittens! And the funds raised by our Holiday Appeal will help the organization con-tinue our efforts into 2015. This all-volunteer organization goes above and beyond to care for, and to get to know their cats prior to adoptions. A full story about the cat, its social preferences, and all medical information is provided to any-one who adopts. You can learn more about what we do and

see a list of cats that are currently available for adoption. If you didnt have the opportunity to contribute during the busy Holiday season, you can still make a difference by go-ing to www.animalovers.org and donating on-line, or you can send your tax-deductible check to AnimaLovers, PO Box 6462, Albany, NY 12206. Your continued support is greatly appreciated and needed!

Finally, the days are starting to get a bit longer in the morning and evening. A sure sign of spring is the arrival of this years seed and gardening catalogs in the mailbox. The time spent perusing the latest offerings and enjoying all the lovely photos of plants in all their owering glory makes a nice escape from the frozen world outside.

Another way that I shake off the midwinter blues is to spend some time in my south facing room enjoying whatever sunshine our short days can muster among the houseplants that spend the winter there.

Regular readers have heard before about my collection of miniature geraniums. Rest assured, theyre all doing well and are responding to the slightly longer days with a burst of new growth and several are so happy with their situation that theyve popped out a few buds. In a couple of weeks Ill be enjoying a preview of summer when these little beauties burst into ower.

Besides my collection of miniature geraniums, there are other owering plants that have managed to nd their way into my indoor garden.

The African Violet is, without question, the most popular of all owering houseplants. Their proli c owering and soft, fuzzy leaves have delighted indoor gardeners for years. Weve all heard stories about great-grandmas prized violet whose descendents are still grown and loved by current family members.

The rst requirement to consider for African Violets is light. Violets need very strong but indirect sunlight. Many folks nd that a bright north-facing window is an ideal spot to grow African Violets. Theyll also thrive under uorescent lights.

The second requirement youll need to pay attention to to grow African Violets is tem-perature. Theyll require a daytime temperature of at least 70 degrees and should remain above 64 degrees at night.

Most folks dont have too much trouble meeting the light and temperature needs of Af-rican Violets. The trickiest part of African Violet care is watering. Violets need to be kept lightly moist constantly and will not appreciate drying out completely. Realizing this, most folks over-compensate by keeping their Violets soggy wet (by leaving standing water in their saucers) which is even worse that letting them dry out. A nice, evenly moist soil is what were shooting for here. African Violets will also want to be watered with tepid or room temperature water. Very cold water from the tap will shock them. When watering your African Violets, try not to get water on the leaves as this will result in an unsightly spotting. Some folks avoid this problem by pouring the water into a saucer placed under the pot. This is a ne method but make sure to drain off and water that isnt soaked-up after a few minutes to avid death from drowning.

I like to feed my African violets Peters Brand African Violet Food (no, no relation) at one-quarter strength every time I water to keep them healthy and owering. Wait until your violets are potbound before repotting. They will ower more if they feel a bit con ned. Al-ways put African Violets into shallow plastic or ceramic pots. Clay or terra cotta pots dry too quickly to be bene cial to African Violets.

If you keep your house cooler than 64 degrees at night, you may have trouble keeping African Violets. A better choice for the cooler home would be a cousin of the African Violet, the Cape Primrose or Streptocarpus. Streptocarpus has the same indirect light requirement as African Violets but can tolerate temperatures as low as 50 degrees at night without ill effects. Like African Violets, Streptocarpus like to be kept evenly moist but is much more forgiving of accidental dryness. With moderate care a Streptocarpus will thrive and ower for years. Unlike African Violets, Streptocarpus can get quite large if it is transplanted into larger size pots.

If you really like to save money by keeping you thermostat turned down, theres still a owering plant option for your home.the Cyclamen. These tuberous plants thrive when nighttime temperatures drop below 60 degrees and prefer that daytime temperatures stay be-low 65 degrees. Keep you Cyclamen barely moist (never soggy). During the owering period, feed with a strength solution of Miracle-Gro. If you can manage not to over-water your Cyclamen, it should be able to maintain a set of its unique inverted owers for over three months!

If your house is very dry and you want to provide a little extra humidity, place the plants in a gravel- lled tray and add water to the top of the gravel. Place your plants on the gravel so the evaporating moisture passes over the leaves. Be sure the pots are not actually sitting in the water. Remember, nothing kills a plant quicker than drowning. Thanks for the read.

Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

DID YOU KNOW?Consuming excessive amounts of sodium not only affects your health but also may affect your appearance. A diet thats rich in sodium has long been linked to a host of health problems, including high blood pres-sure, stroke, kidney disease, and stomach cancer. But consuming too much so-dium also leads to increased water retention, which can cause weight gain and make men and women appear puffy and bloated. Accord-ing to the American Heart Association, the recom-mended daily sodium intake is 1,500 milligrams. But the AHA notes that the average American consumes more than double that amount on a daily basis, and Health

WINTER SUPERFOODS FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH Illnesses seem to peak during the winter months. A tapped-out immune system as well as dry, cold air may encourage the spread of common viruses and bacterial infections more easily. As a result, its important that men, women and chil-dren take every step possible to ward off sickness when the temperatures drop. Dietary changes can make a world of difference, and more and more people are including these proven superfoods in their winter diets.

Avocado: Avocado has high levels of essential fatty acids and vitamin B6, which is important in the biosynthesis of im-portant neurotransmitters. Foods high in B vitamins may be able to counteract some of the symptoms of winter-related depression.

Pomegranate: This quirky fruit has vitamins C and K, folate and potassium and is a good source of fiber. Pomegranate has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help in reduc-ing joint pain and preventing strokes. Pomegranate may also help the body fight viruses.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon has high levels of antioxidants, and some studies point to cinnamon as a natural antibacterial agent. Cinnamon also can help regulate blood-glucose lev-els, which is beneficial for those with diabetes.

Prunes: Now widely referred to as dried plums, prunes are an important source of boron, which could prevent osteo-porosis. High in antioxidants, prunes help the body fight a variety of illnesses.

Cabbage: Cabbage may be a key element in the fight against cancer. Cabbage has phytochemicals that can pro-tect the body against cancer-causing free radicals. Its also a good source of dietary fiber, which can stimulate a sluggish digestive system.

Butternut squash: This food is packed with carotenoids, which are stellar antioxidants. The starches in this squash also have been found to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Chestnuts: Chestnuts are worthy of inclusion in anyones diet. Unlike many nuts, chestnuts are relatively low in fat but have high levels of protein. Theyre also packed with vitamin C and B vitamins.

DID YOU KNOW?Organ and tissue donation affords men and women a unique opportunity to help others. Although the laws vary depending on where a person lives, many persons age 18 or older can indicate their desire to be organ do-nors. Younger people must have a parent or guardians consent. Physical condition will dictate if a person can donate, although people with a previous medical con-dition may still be suitable donors. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, each organ and tissue donor has the potential to save or improve the lives of as many as 50 people. Organs and tissues eligible for donation include the heart, pancreas, lungs, liver, kidneys, intes-tines, cornea, skin, connec-tive tissues, and bone mar-row, among others. In the United States, donors can register with a state donor registry or designate their decisions on their drivers licenses. Canadians can visit beadonor.ca to register to become organ donors.

Canada asserts that Cana-dians also eat roughly the same amount of sodium each day as their American counterparts. While sodium is an essential nutrient, the human body does not need a lot of it to reap its benefits. Bread, processed meats and soups are some of the major

contributors of dietary so-dium, so men, women and even children, who the AHA notes are far more likely to develop high blood pressure as adults if they consume a high-sodium diet as a child, should study packaging on these items to ensure they arent overloaded with so-dium.

STOP COLDS BEFORE THEY STARTThe stuffy nose, aches and pains that often accompany the common cold can leave sufferers feeling miserable for a week or more. Cold season seems to kick into high gear when the temperatures drop, but this can be the year you dont come down with a case of the sniffles. The following cold preven-tion tips can increase your chances of making it to spring without losing any days or sleep to the common cold.

Keep kids clean. School-aged kids tend to carry home lots of germs, so when kids get home after a long day at school, make sure they wash their hands thoroughly and change into fresh outfits. Such precautionary measures can keep colds and other illnesses from running rampant through your house.

Go outdoors and get some fresh air. Its a myth that cold air will bring on a cold. In reality, being outside instead of con-gregating indoors with other sick people may decrease your risk of getting a cold. Dont be afraid to go outside when the temperatures drop for fear of getting sick. Fresh air and exer-cise can be good for you.

Drink plenty of fluids. Keeping your body hydrated will help flush toxins out of your body, strengthening your immune system and making it more capable of fending off colds.

Keep your distance. Did you know the cold virus can be shot up to three feet away when someone sneezes? The virus trav-els on the small droplets of saliva and mucus that get pro-pelled from the nose and mouth of a sick individual. If you know someone is sick, stay as far away as possible and wash your hands frequently, paying special attention to your fin-gertips.

Wipe down surfaces. The cold virus can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours. That means a sick person can easily transfer a virus by touching a computer keyboard or remote control he or she shares with others. Use disinfecting wipes or warm, soapy water to clean off doorknobs, telephones, light switch-es, cabinet handles, and anything that is frequently touched around a home or business.

Let it out gently. Blowing your nose forcefully or pinching your nose to hold back sneezes can irritate nasal passage-ways and make them more vulnerable to infection.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. If you are well, keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes. Vi-ruses are especially good at entering the body through the mucus membranes located in these areas of the body. A combination of frequent handwashing and avoiding touch-ing your face can keep colds at bay.

Maintain your exercise routine. Regular exercise can boost the bodys immune system and help it to fend off foreign invaders, including the cold virus. A recent study found that taking vitamin C in addition to daily exercise can reduce your risk of cold and cut the duration of the cold should you get one. Before taking any supplements, speak with your doctor to make sure they wont interact negatively with other medi-cations.

Recognize that antibiotics are not the answer. Antibiotics are only effective at treating bacterial infections, not viruses, which means they are ineffective at fighting the cold virus.

If you do get sick, play it smart. Should you succumb to a cold in spite of your best efforts, steer clear of others so you are not spreading the virus. Rest and fuel your body with healthy foods and beverages. Theres no need to visit a doc-tor for a cold unless you have a fever after several days of be-ing sick. Colds normally last between seven and 10 days. If your symptoms do not improve or if they seem to be worsen-ing, visit your doctor.

STAY FIT WHEN TEMPERATURES DROPMany animals hibernate throughout the winter. Humans are afforded no such luxury. In fact, living a sedentary lifestyle during the colder months of the year can actually prove det-rimental to human health.

Exercise is beneficial any time of the year, but it can be espe-cially so during the winter months when colder temperatures

force many people inside, where they live more sedentary lifestyles than they do during the rest of the year. Adapt-ing your exercise habits in the winter can help you make it through the colder months in great shape.

There is no reason to stop exercising when the temperature drops. The American Heart Association says working out in the cold weather has distinct advantages over working out in hot and humid conditions. When the weather is cold, you may be able to work out longer and harder because the heat wont zap your energy levels, and exercising outdoors in the winter is a great way to get small doses of sunlight that can improve mood and help your body produce more vitamin D.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says exercise can help boost your immune system, which can help you fight colds and flu symptoms. Just a few minutes of exercise each day can help prevent simple viral and bacterial infec-tions as well.

Working out in the winter may help you burn more calories than in warmer seasons. Research published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures. Quicker runs or walks can burn more calories.

If exercising outdoors is too uncomfortable, break up your routine into smaller, more manageable sessions. Aim for 10 minute sessions several times per day. This quickly can add up to the 30 minutes of daily recommended exercise. Dress in layers so you can feel comfortable, adjusting your cloth-ing as necessary. You dont want to be freezing, but you dont want to wear so many clothes that you start sweating and risk hypothermia.

Consider less traditional exercises when winter sets in. These include shoveling snow, sledding, skating, skiing, and snow-shoeing.
