Frankie
Last of the Litter
Frankie is a sweet and gentle terrier mix about 2-3 years old. He was in a shelter
down south and was going to be euthanized when we stepped forward to save him.
He is a gentle soul who obviously misses his home. Now all we can do is help him find
another to fill the empty space he has in his life. Frankie has had all shots, heartworm
tested, vet checked and more.
This little fellow did not take the transport well and was kept at the shelter to recoup the trip while all his siblings got adopted. He is now ready to go and needs a furever home. He has been vet checked, given first
shots and de-wormed. For more info on this little peanut please call the shelter at
518-654-6220.
Yes here we go again with kitten season. These are just the latest
babies we got in. They are continuing to pour into our doors. If you are
looking for a new kitty to make your home complete please come and
see our little ones.

WALK FOR ACCEPTANCEBALLSTON SPA – On Friday, June 5th, a Walk For Acceptance will be held by Ballston Spa Community Allies. The Walk For Acceptance will give youth the opportunity to voice their concerns about bullying and share their solutions. The walk will begin at Ballston Area Community Center (BACC), 20 Malta Avenue at 3:45pm and continue to Wiswall Park where teens and community leaders will address questions from community youth about acceptance and bullying. Refresh-ments will be served at the Community Center at 5:00pm. Walkers and volunteers should be at the Community Center at 3:30pm. For each group of 10 children, one chaperone is required. Bullying behaviors are exhibited by both children and adults alike. When we become adults, these behaviors are called racism, classism, sexism, and more. Unfortunately we often paint a picture of a one-dimensional bully instead of someone with bullying behaviors who is relatable. This let’s us ignore our own part in allowing behaviors to persist or even our contribution to bullying. To demonstrate to our youth that ending bullying is a community eff ort, we want everyone to join and Walk for Acceptance.

Jeffrey N. Bagnoli, Esq.Kevin J. Tollisen, Esq.
I sometimes find it amusing how our attitudes toward things change over time. I know we all look back at those pictures of us from the 70s, 60s and earlier and are amazed at the hairstyles and clothes we wore then. At the time, my generation thought we were the height of fashion with our big hair and bellbottoms. If you happen upon an old episode of Columbo on the tube, you’ll be amazed at how long men’s sideburns were. And then there were the bold, psychedelic patterns of the disco era. Now we simply look back at all this and wonder, “What were we thinking?” I’m sure that a lot of this has to do with the fashion industry and its need to keep us moving along from one trend to the next to ensure that we’re all in a constant state of desire to be “trendy” and all caught up on the latest fashions. Skirt lengths float up and down, men’s ties get wider and narrower as do lapels. The older one gets, the less one cares about these subtleties of fashion. Of course, when this happens, there’s always the danger of getting stuck in a fashion time warp and ending up as a middle aged balding guy with a ponytail and a penchant for wearing Hawaiian shirts. No, really, it can happen! You might not realize it but the same thing happens with plants. Some plants are popular for awhile and then they are replaced with another. You can go on the internet and find the “Perennial of the Year” and “Annual of the Year” for this and past years. Sometimes it is the color that makes the plant popular and sometimes it’s because the plant is a newly bred variety. Sometimes, just as in the fashion world, plants that were popular in the past enjoy a revival as new gardeners rediscover plants that their grandparents loved. There’s one plant though, that has suffered a fall from grace so complete that few of us are even aware that it was once one of the most well thought of plants on the planet. The plant I’m referring to is the ubiquitous dandelion. Like most of you, I loathe them in my lawn. I want my lawn to be green…not green and yellow or green and white. I’ll mow off the flowers and mow off the seed pods and even threaten to kill them with weed killer. Like most of you, I’m not a big fan of dandelions. I have a vague recollection of tasting dandelion wine that some older relative used to make. I also recall not being too impressed. I know that they sell the leaves in the grocery stores now. That’s not something that I think we had back in the 70s. So, what’s up with these weeds? It might surprise you to know that, at one time, there was NOT ONE dandelion growing on the entire continent of North America. Even knowing that, you’d probably assume that it was just an unfortunate accident that they’re here…they must have gotten here along with another plant or as a seed stuck to someone’s shoe. Actually, the dandelion, that scourge of our lawns that we detest so much, was brought here by European colonists intentionally. In fact, more than one group of colonists brought it with them to their new homes in America. Germans are known to have brought it with them and Spanish colonists introduced dandelions into Mexico including what is now the American southwest. The reason they made a point of bringing dandelion seed to the New World is because they depended on it to keep them healthy. The dandelion, which is actually a plant native to Asia, has a long history as a beneficial and medicinal plant. In China, it is mentioned in herbal texts as early as the 7th century. We can assume that it was used medicinally in China even earlier. In Wales, it is mentioned in the writing of physicians during the 1200s. A French physician gave us the name dandelion when he called them ‘dent de lion’ or ’teeth of the lion’ describing the ragged shape of the leaf. Other common names for the dandelion have been: Blowball, Cankerwort, Swine Snout, Wild Endive, Sin in the Grass and another French name, pis-en-lit which translates as “wets the bed”. This last name describes the dandelion’s ability as a diuretic. The Latin name for the dandelion is Taraxacum officinale which can be translated as ‘disorder remedy’. Dandelion leaves are a wonderful source of vitamin A as well as potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron. Common knowledge of our ancestors was that the various parts of the dandelion can be used to treat urinary tract infections, abscesses, eczema, gout, boils, stomach aches and even snakebite. It has also been used to treat high blood pressure and as a liver purifier. The white sap in the flower’s stem has even been suggested as a cure for warts. The list goes on and on. I’m certainly not suggesting that you use dandelions medicinally but it makes for interesting reading. One would think that, since there are references to the benefit of dandelions about as far back in history as history goes, there might be something to all this. One thing is for sure, our ancestors were not going to the New World without the seeds of their favorite cure. It is no wonder that they are everywhere. We may have completely lost sight of the virtues of the lowly dandelion but they are still with us nonetheless. I’ll have to admit that tender young dandelion greens sometimes make it into the salads at my house. They are a little bitter but, when mixed with all the other greens, they’re pretty good. For some, it is an acquired taste. We once served some dinner guests salad with dandelion greens in it without their knowledge. They enjoyed the salad but called the next day to ask us, “What was in that salad anyway?” I won’t go into detail. Suffice it to say, THEY noticed the effect dandelions can have on the digestive system! Thanks for the read.

TOP 4 SIGNS YOU NEED TO CALL A PEST PROFESSIONAL
(NewsUSA) - When pests are discovered, it may be tempting for homeowners to employ DIY methods to first attempt to deal with pest infestations themselves.
However, depending on the type of pest and size of the in-
festation, there are times when immediately calling in a pest professional is vital to protecting health and property -- and could end up saving money in the long-run.
According to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), there are certain signs homeowners should look for that could indicate the presence of an infestation that should be dealt with promptly by a pest professional:
1. Droppings. Any drop-pings found in undisturbed areas of the home could indicate the presence of rodents. These droppings are a serious health risk and can spread diseases and contaminate food sources. People often mistakenly be-lieve they only have one or two rodents present in their home; in reality, however, mice have high reproduc-tion rates that can quickly escalate to large infestations.
2. Home Pest Sightings. If pests are spotted in the home, even if it's just a couple or they only appear sporadically, it could indi-cate the development of a more serious infestation. In the warmer months, this is especially true for stinging insects. If hornets or wasps are showing up indoors on
a regular basis, there may be a nest somewhere inside or around the home. Removal of stinging insect nests is a dan-gerous job that should always be left to the professionals.
3. Mattress Markings. If small reddish brown spots are found on mattresses, upholstery or walls, it could indicate a bed bug infestation -- especially when paired with red, itchy welts, most notably on the legs and arms. These bugs are no-toriously difficult to get rid of, and a pest professional should be called as soon as possible to assess and treat the situation.
4. Mud Tubes. Some termites build distinctive mud tubes that are frequently found near a home's foundation. Ter-mites are known as "silent destroyers" because their constant gnawing can go unnoticed until significant structural dam-age to the home occurs. If mud tubes are discovered, home-owners should immediately call a pest professional before further structural damage occurs.
If any of these severe pest infestation signs is discovered, homeowners should contact a pest management profes-sional immediately. For additional information and preven-tion tips, visit www.pestworld.org.
DID YOU KNOW? Homeowners looking for a rustic or weathered look for their flooring often rely on terracotta tile, a durable and versatile material that many feel gives a home a warm and earthy feel. Terracotta tile comes in various finishes and has proven resis-tant to the growth of mold and bacteria. However, because it is very porous, terracotta tile absorbs moisture quickly, which means it must be sealed somewhat regularly to prevent cracking, discoloration and staining. It also must be sealed especially well when installed in a kitchen, as terracotta floor tiles are susceptible to damage from acids, alcohol, oils, and vinegar. Installation of terracotta flooring is labor intensive and is therefore best left to professionals.

VEGGIE GARDEN TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
Planting a vegetable garden can be a worthwhile en-deavor for anyone who has an available patch of land. Gardens need not take up much space, and even apart-ment dwellers without yards can plant small gardens in containers they place on ter-races or window boxes.
Although establishing a gar-den is easy enough, begin-ners may make a few mis-takes along the way. Those who already have paved the garden way before can of-fer novice gardeners some worthwhile tips.
One of the first decisions novice gardeners must make is which crops to grow. This will help determine how much land you will need and which supplies or soil amendments will be neces-sary. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, a com-mon error for beginners is planting too much and more than anyone could ever con-sume, so it’s best to start small and be proud of that small garden.
Plants such as peppers, squash and tomatoes pro-duce throughout the season, so you may not need many plants to provide for your needs. Less prolific plants may require a greater invest-ment to produce a similar yield.
Locate your garden in an area that gets adequate sun. Many vegetables need be-tween six and eight hours of sunlight per day. Without enough light, they will not bear as much and could be susceptible to insect infes-tation. Vegetables and fruit also need plenty of water because they’re not very drought-tolerant, so keep gardens close to a water source.
Another good tip is to locate
the garden near the house or barbecue grill. This way you can easily harvest fresh produce and use it when cooking.
Soil preparation is also key. Till the soil and remove de-bris like rocks, sticks and
hard clumps of dirt. Work with organic material, such as manure or compost. Ap-ply mulch after planting to help maintain moisture lev-els in the soil.
Plant the tallest crops at the rear of your garden bed.
Work forward with shorter crops. Try to leave a foot or more between planting rows.
It’s easy to get a garden started and enjoy fresh food for many months to come.

SECRETS TO KEEPING AN ORGANIZED SHEDDespite other intentions, homeowners often turn their garages into storage centers for ran-dom, little-used items, leaving little to no room for the tools and even vehicles that actually belong in a garage. Such homeowners may turn to sheds to store their garage overflow and keep yard equipment at the ready, but storage sheds are not immune to clutter, and home-owners may find the very structure erected to keep them organized requires a bit of organiza-tion itself.
A well-organized shed can save homeowners time and energy, as it’s easy to abandon or de-lay a project if you can’t find that pair of work gloves you stashed. The first step to any organiz-ing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just what needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they’re no longer needed. Make a pile of anything that will be kept, a separate one for donations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of what you have so you know whether you’re missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another.
Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment.
Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that enable you to hang or store items off the floor are good investments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able to put scrap wood to use to make your own storage shelves or a work bench. Extra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items.
In order to remember where items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the wall so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of which tools are missing and which ones need to be purchased.
Don’t forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they will always be easily accessible.
You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed wall to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. Metal funnels can hold twine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser.
Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and children safe.
Make sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items. Roll in the lawnmow-er, wheelbarrow and any other cumbersome items. Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.
Taking the time to clean and organize a shed can help make anyone more produc-tive.

DID YOU KNOW?Building a home gym inside your home can motivate you to workout more often and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Fitness experts advise that homeowners building a home gym in their homes emphasize lighting in the room that will soon transform into a gym. A well-lit room, whether the light is coming from several windows, a door or recessed lighting in the ceiling, can help men and women maintain their en-ergy levels throughout their workouts, whereas darker rooms can lead to feelings of sluggishness, which can compromise workout routines. In addition, when building a home gym, keep the room free of clutter and unnecessary items that will only be a distractions during workouts. Potentially valuable additions to home gyms include plants, which can increase oxygen levels in the room, and at least one mirror, which can help men and women focus on their movements and en-sure they are performing exercises correctly. Homeowners building a home gym also should consider finding room for a wall-mounted television to make time spent on elliptical machines or treadmills less monotonous. If possible, home-owners should connect a streaming device to the television so they can catch up on their favorite shows or watch movies as they burn calories. It’s also good to find space for a mini refrigerator in the gym, which should be kept well stocked with water. This can prevent runs to the kitchen in the middle of a workout.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF HIRING A PROFESSIONAL LANDSCAPER
The flowers are blooming, and the grass has begun to grow anew, making spring a great time for homeowners to once again turn their attention to landscaping. Those who aren’t looking forward to dusting off their lawnmowers and re-threading their string trimmers may want to hire professional landscapers to tend to their lawns and gardens.
A recent joint study by the National Gardening Association, Residential Lawn and Landscape Services and the Value of Landscaping found that homeowners spend roughly $45 bil-lion per year on professional lawn and landscape services, as nearly 30 percent of all households across the United States use at least one type of lawn or landscape service. The ris-ing use of lawn care services is indicative of homeowners’ appreciation of the convenience and craftsmanship profes-
sional services can provide. While the impact professional landscapers can have on a property’s aesthetic appeal is con-siderable, homeowners also benefit from working with pro-fessional landscapers in various other ways.
• Time savings: One of the biggest benefits of leaving lawn care to the professionals is the amount of time it will save for the average homeowner. Lawns generally need to be mowed
once per week during the spring and summer sea-sons and, de-pending on the size of the property, that can take an hour or more. Add the time it takes to clean up clippings,
mulch landscaping beds and edge the property, and home-owners can expect to devote a significant chunk of their weekends to caring for their lawns. Lawn services employ a few workers who make fast work of the job, leaving home-owners time to enjoy their weekends however they see fit.
• Reduced risk for injury: Maintaining a landscape is hard work, and those unaccustomed to this type of activity may find themselves winded or at risk of injury. Improper use of lawn equipment also is a safety hazard. Leaving the work to professionals can help homeowners avoid strained backs, lacerations, pulled muscles, sunburns, and any other dangers that can result when tackling landscaping projects.
• Financial savings: On the surface, hiring a landscaping ser-
vice may seem like a costly venture. However, after crunch-ing some numbers, many homeowners realize that doing the work themselves may cost more in the long run than hiring a professional landscaping service. Homeowners who decide to go it alone must purchase expensive equipment, and those lawn tools will require routine maintenance, which costs additional money. Inexperienced homeowners may in-cur extra fees to “fix” mistakes that occur during the learning process. Each year, new seed, fertilizer, mulch, pesticides, and other supplies also must be purchased. But professional lawn care services typically charge a set fee per month, and that fee covers the maintenance of both your property and the equipment needed to keep that property looking great.
• Know-how: Many professional landscapers know how to address lawn care issues that may arise throughout the year. They will know how to deal with dry patches of lawn or poor-ly draining areas, and they also can make recommendations on plants that will thrive under certain conditions.
• One-stop shopping: Certain landscaping services provide many different options for prospective customers. Basic lawn cuts may be one package, but there also may be services for seasonal seeding, weeding, leaf clean-up, and winterizing.
• Consistent maintenance: Homeowners who frequently travel or spend much of their summers away from home of-ten find that lawn care companies are a wise investment. Es-tablished weekly schedules ensure the landscape always will look its best whether homeowners are home or out of town.
Spring is a great time for homeowners to decide if hiring pro-fessional landscaping services is in their best interests. The time and money saved, as well as impact professional land-scapers can have on a property, makes landscaping services a great investment for many homeowners.
Time saved and a professional job are just two of the reasons homeowners hire lawn care companies.

NOVENA PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. C.S.

(NewsUSA) - Have you forgotten something in figuring where you're going to retire to?
Let's see, you've researched which states tax Social Securi-ty income (only 14, including Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas, North Dakota and Vermont).
And you've even consulted the numbers-crunchers at Bankrate.com to learn which states scored highest overall in everything from cost of living to access to health care (South Dakota, Colorado, Utah, North Dakota and Wyoming).
But here's a question for all you homeowners: Given the results of a new report from Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate -- 57 percent of boomers say they plan to move to a new home in retirement -- what are you doing right now to make sure your current house fetches a good price to help finance your retirement dreams?
"As people grapple with whether to pull up stakes, there's small margin for error," the New York Times' coverage of the report noted.
Here's some tips for preparing what's likely your biggest asset for prospective buyers:

GETTING THE BEST PRICE FOR YOUR HOUSE TO HELP FINANCE YOUR RETIREMENT
* Get rid of the clutter. No doubt you have years worth of memories on display. But they're your memories. And painful as it may be, it's time to accept that not everyone appreciates
having turned your den, for example, into a shrine to the '69 Mets.
"Buyers shouldn't be distracted from imagining them-selves living in your space," says Patsy O'Neill, a sales associ-ate with Sotheby's in Montclair, New Jersey.
* Think twice before doing any trendy remodeling. Espe-cially if your home is older, you may be tempted to go as far in trying to spruce things up as, say, tearing down a wall be-tween the kitchen and an adjoining room just because An-gie's List says creating the feel of more space is "one of the hottest trends in home remodeling."
Well who's to say it'll still be hot in six months or a year?
* Think "curb appeal." There's a reason roof replacement consistently makes Remodeling magazine's annual Cost vs. Value Report, and is up 11.2 percent this year over even last year: A roof is the first thing potential buyers notice -- even from down the street -- and you've already lost the sale if yours looks like hell.
"It's a huge turn-off," says O'Neill, "and makes people pre-disposed to find even more things they don't like." For the look of luxury at very affordable prices, check out the Value
Collection Lifetime Designer Shingles from GAF (www.gaf.com), North America's largest roofing manufacturer.
* Fix major maintenance and safety issues. Would you buy
a house with a sputtering boiler?
Enough said.

WARNING SIGNS A TIRE IS ABOUT
TO GO FLAT Few drivers will be fortu-nate enough to go their entire driving lives without encountering at least one fl at tire. Flat tires range from the inconvenient fl ats, which may interrupt a road trip or make drivers late for work or an appointment, to more dangerous blowouts, which can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and anyone else on the road when the tire gives out.
But as inconvenient or dan-gerous as fl ats or blowouts can be, they also can be pre-vented more often than not. Tires often produce warning signs that a fl at or blowout is about to emerge, so drivers who want to avoid such un-fortunate developments can inspect their tires for the fol-lowing signs.
• Varying wear: Tires should exhibit the same type of wear. The wear on front tires and back tires may diff er, but one front tire should have the same amount of wear as the other and the same goes for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that the tire
with more wear could be about to go out.
• Worn tread: Even driv-ers who know little about cars can typically recog-nize when tire tread has worn down to the point where the tire is a safety risk. But drivers who are unsure can employ the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, with George Washington’s head up-right. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ fi rst president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test
on each of your vehicle’s four tires.
• Low pressure: Drivers who do not routinely check their tire pressure are more likely to endure a fl at or blowout than those who regularly make sure their tires are at the manu-facturer-recommended pressure, which can be found in a vehicle owner’s manual or by calling the tire manufacturer or visiting their website. An underinfl ated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blowout. In addition, poorly infl ated tires force engines to work harder, which negatively aff ects a car’s fuel effi ciency.
• Vibration: A car that vibrates excessively may do so because tires are damaged. Poor suspension is another cause of ex-cessive vibration. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should immediately take the car to their mechanic for an inspection.
• Physical damage to the tire: Sometimes tires exhibit physi-cal damage like bulges or cuts, and such signs could mean a fl at tire or blowout is just around the corner. Tires that exhibit such physical damage need to be replaced immediately.
Flat tires and blowouts can prove both scary and inconve-
Routinely checking tire pressure and infl ating underinfl ated tires is one way drivers can reduce their risk of fl at tires and blowouts.
nient. Drivers who want to avoid such problems should rou-tinely inspect their tires for indicators that a fl at or blowout is likely to occur.

SMALL ENGINES MAY HAVE BIG FUTURESThe move is on to produce more fuel-efficient automobiles. Although alternative fuels have garnered significant publicity in recent years, some automakers are simply shrinking the stan-dard car engine.
Automakers have been producing three-cylinder engines for some time, but are just now starting to reveal such engines to the public. While these types of engines have traditionally been associated with lawn mowers, mopeds and snowmobiles, a handful of cars are now be-ing equipped with three-cylinder engines to increase fuel efficiency.
While three-cylinder engines have had the unfortunate stereotype of being puny next to ve-hicles touting more under the hood, experts say that advances in engine technology have made it possible for three-cylinder engines to produce more power with less. Ford, Nissan
and BMW are just some of the automakers experiment-ing with three-cylinder en-gines while also promoting other innovations to boost efficiency. Streamlined aero-dynamics, carbon fiber and improved horsepower can change public perceptions of cars with engines that have fewer cylinders.
In addition to requiring less fuel, three-cylinder engines take up less space in engine compartments, freeing up more room for interior pas-senger space. This can create more space in traditionally compact vehicles. Smaller engines can improve safety because there is less risk that the engine will penetrate the interior in a front-end colli-sion.
While some three-cylinder vehicles have lackluster responses with accelera-tion and road performance, others offer comparable horsepower to some larger engines. According to the
automotive website Jalopnik, many modern three-cylinder engines offer power comparable to that offered by V8 en-gines in the 1970s.
The three-cylinder offerings may be concentrated to a few brands right now, but the advantages of these smaller en-gines may make them more prevalent in the years to come.

HIT THE ROAD FOR SPRING AND SAVE SMART(StatePoint) After months of cold weather, it’s time for blooming flowers, chirping birds and weekend getaways. Spring is here and it’s a great time for a road trip or spontaneous getaway. Here are a few tips to avoid stress and common budget breakers.
Snag the Best Deals
For inexpensive road trip ideas, avoid peak-season destinations. Track off-peak deals through online travel blogs and avoid expensive accommodations at five-star hotels by staying at hostels or renting affordable and, at times, luxurious options from local hosts. Spend a night camping or visit a bed and breakfast for a more cost-effective option that can offer a cozy, intimate and more local feel to your getaway.
Map it Out
Plan your route to cut down on mileage and save on gas. Fuel reward credit cards can also offer major savings nationwide. Consider taking advantage of one with ongoing savings, like the ExxonMobil Smart Card, which provides you with the opportunity to save six cents per gallon when you purchase a minimum of 45 gallons of Exxon- or Mobil-branded fuel in a month. Savings apply from the first gallon up to 100 gallons each month.
Plus, ExxonMobil is now offering new Smart Card members who apply by June 30, 2015 a sav-ings of 24 cents per gallon on purchases that qualify for the ongoing savings offer during the first two months after the date the account is opened.
Paying with the ExxonMobil Smart Card helps put money back in your wallet. You can apply at any Exxon- or Mobil-branded location or online at www.ExxonMobilSmartCard.com where you will also find complete details. Subject to credit approval.
Pack Smart. Plan Ahead
Avoid long toll lines and rest stop detours by packing snacks and other time-saving necessi-ties including a toll tag and an ExxonMobil Speedpass key tag to conveniently fill up faster with just a wave. Add a universal charger to the list to ensure your devices are charged and ready to take full advantage of discount apps and navigation tools.
Before your trip, visit an automotive technician to ensure your car is road-trip ready. And to easily locate the closest Exxon- or Mobil-branded service station, download the ExxonMobil Fuel Finder app for Android and iPhone.
Get Creative with Ways to Save
In today’s world, there’s a deal for everything you want to do. Pack your itinerary with top-notch dining, luxurious hotel accommodations and adventurous activities at a reduced price through popular discount sites and local deals. For example, most museums offer student discounts or reduced tickets during off-peak hours. Be sure to download a site’s mobile app before hitting the road to find last-minute deals where you’re traveling. If you want a more traditional way to save while experiencing the local surroundings, try packing a picnic by stocking up at the nearest deli.
Have Fun!
With a road trip that’s both fun and cost-conscious, you can enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Plan ahead so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE AT THE PUMPThe cost of fuel dipped in 2014, but drivers are still looking for ways to spend less at the pump. For many drivers, that means driving less. Driving less will save money, and doing so also reduces fuel consumption and contributes to fewer emissions entering the air, both of which can benefit the environment.
But many drivers are unable to drive less, as commitments to work and family require them to get behind the wheel more often than they might prefer. Such drivers may be looking for ways to reduce their fuel costs, and fortunately there are several ways to do just that.
• Reconsider your choice of fuel. Many of today’s auto manufacturers now design their vehi-cles so they can run smoothly on regular unleaded gas, which is typically listed as “87 octane” at filling stations. That’s important to know, as regular gas is often considerably less expensive than alternatives that are higher octanes. Many drivers may even choose regular unleaded, but opt for premium gas every third or fourth trip, feeling that the higher octane fuel every so often will increase performance of older engines. But many engines are designed to run smoothly and efficient on low-octane fuel, meaning it’s unnecessary to choose premium gas, even if you only do so once in a blue moon. Read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to determine the best fuel for your car.
• Buy when the time is right. Prices at filling stations fluctuate on a daily basis, so unless your car is running on empty, avoid filling up when the prices seem especially high. Some patience
may pay off with several dollars in savings, and those savings can add up to a significant amount of money over time.
• Become a less aggressive driver. Drivers with hectic schedules tend to be more aggressive when behind the wheel. But driving aggressively is unsafe and potentially costly. When driven at speeds that exceed 55 miles per hour, vehicles lose fuel economy. According to the Cali-fornia Energy Commission’s Consumer Energy Center, driving 55 miles per hour instead of 75 miles per hour can reduce fuel costs by as much as 75 percent.
• Remove unnecessary weight. A car trunk might seem like a great place to keep your golf clubs, and it may be tempting to leave that roof rack on top of your car after a recent camping trip, but such unnecessary cargo in or on your car makes it harder for the car to get from point A to point B. That forces the car to consume more fuel. Unless your immediate plans include hitting the links or hunkering down at a nearby campsite, remove unnecessary weight from the car so your next trip to the gas station is less expensive.

GREAT APPS DRIVERS CAN USESmartphones are a convenient tool that few people can now imagine living without. Smartphone-toting moms and dads know they always have a camera on hand to take quick snaps of their youngsters, while foodies rely on their smartphones to find nearby restaurants or read reviews of eateries while out on the town. But drivers also can benefit from smart-phones thanks to the following apps.
• Waze: Commuters who download Waze to their smart-phones may wonder how they ever navigated their daily treks to the office without this useful app, which allows driv-ers to share real-time traffic and road information with their fellow motorists. Drivers can use Waze to save time and gas money and make their commutes less stressful. Drivers who use Waze can actively report accidents and find the least expensive gas prices posted by fellow drivers in their com-munity.
• GasBuddy: While fuel pric-es dipped in late 2014 and stayed low into 2015, today’s drivers are still conditioned to find the most affordable gas prices around. The Gas-Buddy app makes it easy to do just that, as users can share gas prices in their com-munity, which fellow drivers can then peruse to find the most affordable filling sta-tions along their driving
routes. Drivers can even enter their city, ZIP code or postal code to find the cheapest gas in their vicinity.
• AAA Mobile: AAA members can use the AAA Mobile app to access AAA services on their smartphones. Such services include trip planning, member discounts and roadside assis-tance. The app also includes a mobile version of the motor club’s popular TripTik® Travel Planner, which makes it easy for smartphone users to find club-approved hotels, restaurants
and attractions. Driv-ers can even create and share trip itiner-aries between their desktop and mobile devices.
• Insurance: Nearly every auto insurance provider now offers
its own mobile app to policy holders. Such apps may al-low drivers to pay their bills, view their insurance identi-fication cards, peruse their policies, arrange for road-side assistance and report claims among other things. These apps put your auto insurance provider at your fingertips and can make it much easier to manage your policy.
