Welcome a Fresh Air Child Into Your Home This SummerCAPITAL REGION Each summer, over 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Funds Volunteer Host Family Program. Host-ing a child does not take much just a little room in your heart and your home but the experience creates friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. Volunteer families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experi-ence simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass and gazing at star-filled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families in North Central New Hampshire often redis-cover the beauty of their own communities. For more informa-tion on hosting a Fresh Air child, please contact Lisa Bladecki at 603-387-1870 or The Fresh Air Fund at (800) 367-0003. You can also visit them online at www.freshair.org. (A)

The collections must consist of at least 10 pieces, no more than 30 pieces and the age categories are 3-5 years old, 6-10 years old and 12-15 years old. Sue Leahey, Kim Leahey & Joan Joyner, Education Superin-tendents, believe that the young citizens of Saratoga County are an important part of the community and should have the opportunity to share their collections with the many thousands of people attending the fair. Set up date for the education ex-hibits is Thursday, July 12, from 10am-2pm at the Saratoga Fair Grounds under the Grandstand. Entries will be accepted on this day only. Things To Consider Before Adding A GreenhouseMany men and women with a passion for gardening hope to one day have a greenhouse they can call their own. Though greenhouses are a great place for gardeners to hone their crafts, they can also be quite expensive, and there are some things gardeners should consider before building a greenhouse.

    * Size: A greenhouse can be grandiose or small in stature. The size of a greenhouse depends on the gardener and the amount of property available. Larger greenhouses can be breathtaking, but the homeowner in you might not want a greenhouse to dominate your entire property. In addi-tion, if your planting plans are relatively modest, a bigger greenhouse probably doesn't make much sense.

    * Cost: Greenhouses can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Price should not dictate which greenhouse you buy, so if you want a large one but can only afford a

small one, then it might be best to keep saving money until you can afford one that meets your needs.

    * Use: If you plan to use the greenhouse just during the standard gardening seasons, then you won't need to heat it. However, most greenhouse owners want to use the greenhouse year-round, in which case you will need to heat the interior. In addition, those want to keep gardening during the dog days of summer will have to ventilate the greenhouse. Consider the use and the potential cost a year-round greenhouse before making your decision.

    * Location: The greenhouse will need to be in a place on the property that gets lots of sun. Be-fore buying or building a greenhouse, choose an area on the property where plants will thrive. If that area is currently used for something else, ask yourself and those who share the home with you if converting that part of the property to a greenhouse is something they can all live with. You don't want the greenhouse to be a burden or negatively impact your family's quality of life.

The Case For Choosing Native PlantsOne of the best ways to improve a home's resale value is to address the landscape. Increasing a property's curb appeal can be done in many ways, but a well-pruned lawn and garden gives buy-ers the impression that the sellers truly took the time to maintain the home and the surrounding property.

Unfortunately, many homeowners choose exotic plants when addressing their landscape. Though these plants can be appealing and make a property stand out, if the plants are not native to the region, they could be doing more harm than good. Instead of upgrading your property with exotic

plants from a far away land, consider the following benefits of choosing native plants before ad-dressing your landscape.

    * Native plants benefit local wildlife. The native plants and the native wildlife spent years and years evolving together, with each doing their part to ensure the other's survival. But as develop-ment continued, local wildlife suffered because of lost food sources. The local wildlife needs local, native plants to survive, so choosing these plants instead of exotic plants can help ensure the survival of wildlife that helps keep the ecosystem in check.

    * Native plants require less work. Some prospective home buyers might find a yard filled with exotic plants to be visually stunning, but they might also see a good deal of work to maintain those plants. Many exotic plants require significant work on a homeowner's part to survive, while native plants have already adapted to the local climate and will require much less care. This is often attractive to current and future homeowners alike.

    * Native plants might be a better investment. A native plant has evolved over the years to survive in its given area. Local insect populations and fungal infections might be able to destroy an exotic plant, but a native plant has grown resistant to such problems and likely has the ability to fight such infestations or infections on its own. An exotic plant might require costly pesticides and considerable attention from homeowners to survive such problems.

Though homeowners might find exotic plants help their home stand out from their neighbors', it's important that homeowners recognize the environmental benefits of choosing local plants before making any decisions.

Keep Rabbits at BayRabbits may seem like adorable critters one would love to have around. However, rabbits can cause serious damage to landscapes in a short amount of time. Keeping them away from plants and shrubs takes some patience.

Rabbits have a penchant for feeding on seedlings, shrubs, bulbs, and certain flowers. If really hungry, they'll essentially munch on anything a lawn or garden has to offer. Homeowners might end up watching those hostas disappear before learning that the daffodils have been decimated.

There are certain options that can keep rabbits out of the backyard. Some are more humane than others. Before a homeowner decides to take rabbit control into his or her own hands, the laws of the neighborhood should be investigated. For example, kill traps certainly will take care of rab-bits, but they may not be legal in a particular area. Many also view them as inhumane and only a last resort when trying to solve a rabbit problem.

Other options involve live traps and repellents. Live traps, while effective, will only trap the ani-mal. The homeowner will then have to relocate it to another area. Chances are, unless homeown-ers routinely drop the rabbits off miles away from home, these uninvited guests will eventually find their way back to a particular yard.

Repellents are another way to keep rabbits at bay. There are several methods that may work that homeowners can try.

    * Thiram: This fungicide can be used on ornamental plants (ones that won't be eaten due to their toxicity). Rabbits find this product repulsive. It will have to be reapplied after heavy rains and may not be practical if pets frequent the yard.

    * Blood meal: Sprinkle blood meal, a high-nitrogen form of natural fertilizer, or hang bags of cheesecloth containing the substance around plants that should not be eaten by rabbits.

    * Manure: Make a solution of cow manure and water and spray it on plants.

    * Pepper: Rabbits frequently sniff out their surroundings. Red pepper, cayenne pepper or even black pepper can be an irritant that works to send rabbits away.

    * Mexican Marigolds: This plant is said to repel rabbits.

    * Human scents: Some rabbits are put off by the scent of humans in the garden. Old shoes or a piece of clothing may achieve this. However, chances are rabbits have grown accustomed to the smell of humans and are bold enough to enter the garden.

    * Dogs and cats: Some rabbits will not visit lawns in which cats and dogs have staked their claim.

    * Corncobs: Soak used corncobs in vinegar and place around the garden.

    * Hair clippings: Some people say that hair clippings from the barber shop will deter rabbits.

Hiring A Lawncare ProfessionalMany homeowners hire a lawncare professional to tend to their lawns and gardens. To hire a quality service or individual, homeowners need to do a little homework.

    * Compare prices. Professional landscapers offer an array of services and, as a result, those services vary in cost. Ask neighbors and friends what they pay for routine maintenance and any other special services. Get recommendations for companies that do work you admire.

    * Interview prospective companies. Set up appointments or price quotes from three different lawncare services. Compare the offerings and the prices. Ask questions about whether pricing is "per week" or "per cut." Determine if services such as edging, blowing away debris, trimming, and clean-up are included.

    * Find out about extras. Some services will offer pack-ages for spring and fall clean-up, and homeowners should inquire about any special offers during the ini-tial comparison stage.

    * Who does the work? A company may farm out work to other landscapers. Figure out who will be arriving each week and base decisions accordingly.

Did You Know?Highlighting, or up lighting, is a landscaping technique in which light from below is used to accent certain focal points in a landscape. In many instances, the light is used to illuminate a particularly impressive or unique plant. When highlighting, two or more spot light fixtures are placed at the base of a landscape component and pointed upward. While highlighting is most commonly used to illuminate plants, it can be used to draw attention to other focal points of a

landscape as well, including sculptures or other garden structures. Light fixtures are aimed away from observers as a means to preventing glare, and oftentimes the fixtures themselves are cam-ouflaged to maintain the natural beauty of the landscape.
