BROOKSIDE DIGS: AN ARCHEOLOGY EXPERIENCE

BALLSTON SPA - The Saratoga County Historical Society announced that registration is open for Brookside Digs: An Archeology Experience, which will take place August 4 – August 8. Space is limited, so register now! This program is best suited for ages 10 – 15; participants will work beside pro-fessional archeologists on a full excavation at Brookside, which was built in 1792. The weeklong program costs $250 per person and runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily beginning on Monday, August 4 and ending on Friday, August 8. SERVICE PROJECT CAPITAL DISTRICT - Club members are collecting non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Franklin Community Center and the Mechanicville Community Center to help feed kids that are out of school and will not be receiving free or reduced breakfast and lunch during the summer. The final school bell of the year will ring before we know it, and children will leave their schools for the summer. SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM OFFERS FREE LUNCH

BALLSTON SPA - The members of The First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa and Ballston Spa United Methodist Church are actively preparing for their 2014 Summer Lunch Program. This program is designed to provide free lunches to children of families in need. This program has served the local Village of Ballston Spa for the past three years. With the help of a generous grant from Stewarts and donations from local busi-nesses and organizations we are able to continue this pro-gram into its fourth year. 75-100 lunches are served Monday thru Friday, July and August. Nutritious and fresh bagged meals are prepared by church members and local volunteers and given to each child in attendance that might otherwise go hungry. Any assistance is welcome and the program is seeking volunteers. Volunteers can sign up through The First Baptist Church, 885-8361 or on the church website, bspabap-tist.org. Permission forms are required for children to partici-pate in the program. They are also available at the church or on the church website. Dur-ing the Civil War, Van Law left Richmond society to spy for the Union Army and earn the title “Grant’s spy.” Dr. Donald Wyman is a former Army offi cer and CIA offi cial. Dr. Wyman will reveal many of the clandestine sources, methods and the profes-sional trade craft that Ms. Van Lew employed while accomplishing her patriotic and dangerous mission as spymaster in the Confeder-ate capital. Friends of Sara-toga Battlefi eld will sponsor four free lunchtime concerts at 12 noon at Saratoga Na-tional Historical Park’s visitor center. Bring a lunch and listen to a diff erent program each week: folk, traditional and martial music. HOME PROJECTS PERFECT FOR 'STAYCATIONERS' The "staycation" was a concept many first acquainted themselves with when the economy started to struggle and men and women were forced to tighten their belts. In lieu of trips overseas or family trips to popular tourist destinations, many men and women opted to stay home and save their money.

While the idea of a staycation makes practical sense, many found that idling away a week of hard-earned vacation at home could grow somewhat boring after a few days. But whether a staycation is a week-long escape from the office or a three-day weekend, homeowners can tackle a few projects around the house to turn their time at home into one marked by pro-ductivity instead of boredom.

* Add a splash of color. One of the easiest and most effective ways to give a home a new look is to repaint the home's interior. Such a project can be a small-scale undertaking focusing on one or two rooms in the house or a more ambitious exercise in which more lived-in rooms like a family room and/or kitchen are given an entirely new color scheme. When removing old paint, consider using sanding pads to make the task easier than the days or yore, when paint was often tediously scraped off of walls with a putty knife. Parents on staycation can even involve the whole family in their painting project, allowing youngsters to choose new colors for their rooms and do a little work with the paintbrush as well.

* Say farewell to old faucets. Faucets have a unique way of making bathrooms appear dated. But vanity faucets can quickly and easily be replaced so long as the main problem is appear-ance and not plumbing. Homeowners who suspect potential plumbing problems with sinks should seek a consultation with a professional before replacing vanity faucets. EASY ECO-FRIENDLY HOME PROJECTS

Home improvement projects have taken an environmentally-friendly turn in recent years, as homeowners look to reduce their carbon footprints en route to improving their homes' interior and exterior spaces. Such projects can range from large scale undertakings best left to professional contractors to smaller alterations that do-it-yourselfers can handle in a typical weekend.

Larger projects might make the biggest impact, but even small efforts to make a home more eco-friendly can benefit the planet significantly over time. The following are a handful of simple DIY home improvement projects that can benefit the planet.

* Install low-flow water fixtures. According to the National Re-sources Defense Council, installing low-flow water fixtures in a home saves both water and money. Low-flow water fixtures include toilets, shower heads and faucets, and the NRDC notes that such additions typically repay a homeowner's ini-tial investment in less than a year thanks to lower utility bills. A low-flow toilet is one that uses 1.6 gallons of water per flush or less, while low-flow faucets and showers are those that use 2.5 gallons of water per minute or less.

* Install weather stripping. Weather stripping is a great way to reduce energy consumption while getting the most bang for your energy buck. Weather stripping is installed around

windows and doors to seal any cracks or holes that develop over time. Such holes and cracks are more common in older homes, which is one reason that heating and cooling costs in such homes tend to be so much more expensive than those in newer homes. To determine if you need weather stripping, simply feel for drafts near doors and windows. If there is no wind or cold air outside, then place a fan or ask someone to hold a hair dryer near suspect doors and windows while you stand on the other side, feeling areas where you think there may be drafts.

* Paint with a purpose. Fall is a great time of year to paint around the house, as the weather outside is pleasant enough to open windows in the home so it can air out during and after the painting. When choosing paints for your home, opt for low-VOC, or volatile organic compound, paints. VOCs are a principal ingredient of ground-level ozone, which contrib-utes to urban smog. VOCs also pose a considerable health risk, as studies have linked them to cancer, eye and throat irritation, headaches, and damage to the liver and nervous system.

* Replace old light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights. Thought replacing traditional incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents lights, or CFLs, is an easy task, that does not mean it's ineffective. According to the NRDC, CFLs use just one-quarter the energy of incandescent alternatives. In addition, CFLs last longer, saving homeowners the inconve-nience of replacing bulbs.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR DECK FOR PROBLEMS

Summer party season is in full swing, and that means scores of people will be relaxing with family and friends on their decks. But such gatherings are only as fun as they are safe, and responsible hosts and homeowners must inspect their decks for signs of trouble before hosting their first summer soiree.

Deck inspections can be relatively simple, especially for those homeowners whose decks are newly built or recently refur-bished. But even a new deck should be inspected at the start of the season to ensure the safety of all who will be spending time on the deck in the months to come. The following are

a few tips to help homeown-ers spot trouble spots on their decks.

* Check the wood. Split or decaying wood is a trouble spot that will need to be ad-dressed. Such wood may feel spongy or break off without splintering, and those things are indicative of rot. Another sign of trouble to look for

with regard to the wood is whether or not it has any holes. Holes may be a symptom of infect infestation, which can compromise the safety of the deck over time.

* Inspect the ledger board. The ledger board is a weight-bear-ing board that connects the deck to the house. Over time, the gap between the ledger board and the house may widen. In such instances, simply tighten the bolts. When inspecting the ledger board, examine the flashing that surrounds it. Flashing prevents the buildup of moisture that causes rot, and when there is an issue with the flashing, it's often noticeable be-cause mud and debris has become stuck between the flash-ing and the exterior wall of the home. Clear any such debris and then seal the overlapping areas with caulk.

* Inspect support posts. Support posts should be firmly con-nected to the beams below the deck floor. Loose connections between the support posts and beams should be tightened, and replace any bolts that need replacing.

* Inspect the surface. The elements can be harsh on a deck, so inspect the surface to ensure there is no buildup of mildew, power washing any areas where mildew has started to accu-mulate. Different deck materials may need certain types of cleaners, so consult with the company who built your deck or speak to a local home improvement specialist to determine

which type of cleaning solution your deck needs. Once the deck has been power washed, allow it to dry before applying any additional layers of finish.

* Ensure railings are not loose. Grasp and shake the deck's railings to ensure none are loose and all provide ample sup-port for anyone who will be enjoying the deck. Balusters are the short pillars or columns that run perpendicular to the rail-

ings and the walking surface of the deck, and these should also be checked to ensure they are not loose. Youngsters may lean against the balusters when relaxing on the deck, so it's imperative that none are loose.

Deck inspections ideally should be performed in spring be-fore homeowners host their first get-together, and if any problems are discovered, everyone should steer clear of the deck until those issues have been addressed.

DID YOU KNOW?'Tis the season for barbecues, picnics and outdoor entertaining. As the weather warms, peo-ple take to the outdoors in droves, eager to enjoy the sunshine and the pleasant tempera-tures. Some may argue that grills, with their charcoal and natural gas heating components sending carbon gases into the air, are bad for the environment. But the disposable plastic containers, dishes and cutlery that are staples of outdoor entertaining may be more harmful to the environment. In addition to the energy expended and the chemicals used to produce plastic products, disposable items often end up in storm drains, and from those drains they wash into waterways and oceans, where pieces of the plastic are consumed by fish and other aquatic animals. If the plastic does not injure or kill the fish, it may end up contaminating the animal, passing on dangerous chemicals if that fish later becomes a food source. Many plas-tics marked as #1 or #7 can be recycled and made into new items, even fabrics. Even plastic products that cannot be recycled can be reused. Bring picnic and barbecue supplies home to wash and use again. To cut down on excess in landfills, limit use of disposable serviceware. While less convenient, cloth napkins, reusable plates, silverware, and cups are better for the environment. Designate a special set of items for outdoor use that can be used again and again.

DID YOU KNOW?Watering a lawn can do more harm than good if the lawn is not watered correctly. Excessive watering is a waste of water and can cost homeowners money while harming the environ-ment at the same time. Water that is not absorbed by the lawn can result in runoff, which causes nitrogen in the grass, any fertilizer that was applied and chemicals in the water itself to run into gutters and eventually pollute streams, rivers and oceans. In addition, grass needs oxygen in the soil to grow properly. But when a lawn is overwatered, the oxygen between the soil particles is pushed out, depriving roots of the oxygen they need to grow in strong. This leads to shallow root systems, which make a lawn more susceptible to stress, disease and insect infestation. But overwatering can also be unsightly, as lawns that are overwatered tend to have more weeds, robbing even the greenest of lawns of its aesthetic appeal.

Garth is a 1 year old Hound mix (Greyhound,Deerhound,Spaniel,Springer). He weighs 68 pounds. Garth is a loving, loyal, silly and confident dog. He’s

house-trained and good with dogs his same size, as well as with older chil-dren. Garth has not been around cats but when he sees them he is curious. He’s a high energy dog and needs a fenced-in yard. He is highly motivated

with treats and is easy to train. He would make a good addition to a family with older children who are active outdoors.

Charlie is a 1-1/2 year old charming black and white male cat. He has a cute mustache we thought looked like Charlie Chaplin, hence his name. He has an impressive purr, kittenish meow chirp and is always reaching out to be petted. Charlie was abandoned at a farm, barely surviving having little to eat and inadequate shelter. In his foster home he has become an avid lap cat and a faithful companion. When he isn’t with his foster mom she finds him playing with his little catnip toy and is

entertained for hours. Charlie is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and tested negative for both FIV and Feline Leukemia.

Rocco is a sweet boxer/bulldog mix (DNA test) who weighs ~ 50 pounds. He is 8 years old, neutered, completely vetted, and microchipped. Rocco

loves to curl up on the couch and enjoys when his human is nearby. Rocco is housebroken and will let you know when he needs a potty break. When necessary he can easily be crated, although he has not

been left alone for extended amounts of time. A fenced-in yard is a must because Rocco deserves to run and play outside. Rocco should be an only pet - he needs to be with a family that focuses solely on him. In fact a one-on-one situation or an older couple might be best for him. To learn

PBMeet PB, a lovely 2-year-old lap kitty who just loves to curl up on the bed with you each night. PB has the sweetest little pink nose and big

mitten feet. PB is a talker and loves to tell you all about her day - not with a traditional meow but with a soft gravely chirp and will also let you know when it’s dinner time. PB is usually found up off the ground - on the bed, back of the couch, cat perch, window sill, in your lap....

anywhere she has a good view. PB is playful but gentle and helps take care of the other cats in the house. One of her favorites is Harper cat (see HOPE’s website) who she has always treated almost like her own

kitten - if you are looking for two cats these ladies would make a nice “look-alike” bonded pair. PB is current on her vaccinations, spayed, and

negative for FIV and feline leukemia.

I answer a LOT of gardening questions and it is interesting to see the questions change as the season progresses. There’s one misconception that crops up every year as summer begins... the difference between “planting” and “transplanting”...and there is a HUGE difference.

Here’s a typical situation: A customer is looking at the selection of fl owering shrubs that are on sale and seems like they want to purchase some but then they’ll say this, “I should prob-ably wait though.” Then I’ll ask, “Why?”

“I read that you shouldn’t transplant shrubs during summer.” Over the years, I’ve heard this many, many times before and, quite literally speaking, the statement is true but that isn’t what they are talking about...there’s a major difference between “planting” and “transplanting”.

When you’re digging up and moving an already established tree or shrub, that’s called trans-planting. If you attempt this during the long hot days of summer when the plant is in the full fl ush of growth, you can send plants into fatal shock. TRANSPLANTING is best done while the plant is dormant during late fall or very early spring as soon as the soil can be worked.

When you shop in your local garden center, you are buying plants that were dug and potted much earlier when the plant was still dormant. When you bring your new shrub or perennial home you’re PLANTING, not TRANSPLANTING.

Many folks put off their planting until fall because they think that they shouldn’t do it now. If you have PLANTING to do, do it as soon as you can. Think about it...if it wasn’t possible to plant in summer, landscapers would be out of business.

OK, now that we’ve cleared up that bit of confusion, let’s take a look at how to properly plant a shrub or tree to avoid a deadly (for the plants) mistake many folks make.

I’ve also seen my share of dead shrubs and trees. Over the years a pattern has become emerged. 90% of the dead shrubs and tree I see failed because they were planted too deeply. You can still see the dirt on the stem way above the crown of the plant. When the crown of the plant is below the soil and the bark at the base of the tree is covered with dirt, it will eventually die. Let’s go review correct way to plant.

Dig the hole only as deep as the root ball or the pot but twice as wide. If you’ve dug too deep so you need to fi ll it in a bit. Avoid suffocating the tree by NOT burying the trunk or stem under the soil. The spot on the tree trunk where the soil is in the pot or ball needs to be visible after planting. I used to add bone meal to the bottom of the planting hole. These days I’ve switched to something better. For an average sized tree or shrub, you’ll want to add about a cup of Bio-Tone. Bio-Tone contains bone meal plus other great ingredients for start-ing a strong root system. If the soil is extra sandy, add peat moss to help improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture.

Next, place the tree into the hole and check to make sure I’m at the proper planting depth. The spot where the trunk of the tree meets the soil of its ball or pot should exactly match the level of the soil around your planting hole. The easiest way to check this is to lay a stick (the handle of your shovel works) across the planting hole and make sure that the top of the root ball is level with the ground.

Once you’ve made sure that the crown of the plant (the dividing line on the plant between what is above the ground and what is below) is at the proper level, fi ll in the rest of the plant-ing hole.

This is the point where inexperienced gardeners OFTEN make another mistake. When you dig a hole, then fi ll it with a large root ball, there’s going to be soil left over. Many will opt to pile it up around the trunk or stem. I guess it looks cozy, like tucking the plant in or some-thing. DON’T DO IT! It will have the same negative effect as planting too deeply. If the stem or trunk above ground is covered with soil, it hinders the plant’s ability to pass moisture and nutrients from the root system to the branches and leaves above. Use the extra soil to build a dish-shaped dike or berm out away from the stem of the plant. Water heavily after planting to remove any air pockets from the soil. The importance of maintaining proper planting depth extends to 99% of planting situations.

You should also take care when applying bark and other mulches not to pile them up against the stems and trunks of plants. I’m always (sadly) amazed when I see trees with bark mulch piled in a volcano shaped mound around the trunks of trees. Remember: roots is roots and stems is stems. Bury the roots but let the stems be free to breathe. Thanks for the read!

SLOW DOWN TO GET AROUND TRASH TRUCKS

(NAPS)—Road accidents caused by distracted or speeding drivers are a huge risk for the more than 135,000 men and women of the waste and recycling industry who are out in force each day keeping our communities clean and healthy—but you can be part of the solution.

Just as most drivers tend to drive carefully when they see a school bus, in many places, it’s now required to give trash col-lection vehicles the courtesy of slowing down when trying to get around them.

The Problem

Some drivers try to speed up to avoid garbage trucks. Others don’t even realize one is nearby, since they’re such familiar presences. Because of such roadway dangers, trash collec-tion is one of the country’s most dangerous professions.

What’s Being Done
