HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”

CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a con-temporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritu-ally and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Mu-sic Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the rec-ognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culmi-

nate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethle-hem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are

interested in help locating former members, and iden-tifying folks to assist on vari-ous committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Chris-tian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

MENTORS NEEDED FOR LOCAL

NON-PROFITCAPITAL REGION – Spring is coming and with it a time to renew, re-group, and re-pri-oritize. What better way than to begin a new volunteer opportunity! I am I can, a mentoring program for girls in grades 9-12, is seeking professional women to work with new students to the program. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student on a one-to-one basis, while developing a relationship that provides sup-port and guidance in achieving their post-graduation goals. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clif-ton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to sup-port girls in Shenendehowa, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please visit our website at www.iami-canachieve.org or contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 688-3010 x102 or at [email protected].

I hate to be the one to say it but there are already signs of fall around. The back-to-school sales are in full swing and it won’t be long before we’ll miss the warmth that we’ve come to take for granted the last couple of months. All good things must come to an end but, as gardeners know, the end of one season is the time to make preparations for the next. One way to do this is (and get to enjoy some late season color is to add some hardy mums to your flowerbeds. The many petal shapes and colors that chrysanthemums (mums to you “kiku” to the Japanese) exhibit have made them a fall favorite for years….many, many years. When you decide to grow chrysanthemums, you become involved in a gardening pastime that spans many centuries. History traces the origin of chrysanthemum culture to Imperial China over 3,000 years ago. Chrysanthemums were highly prized by the emperors of China who considered them to be more valuable than gold. The Japanese also revere the chrysanthemum. In fact, the origin of Japanese culture is wrapped in chrysanthemum legend. It seems that one of the early emperors of China became quite ill. In his quest for a remedy he learned of the “herb of youth” that would restore his health. The search for the “herb of youth” was entrusted to twelve male and twelve female virgins. They sailed out onto the Pacific Ocean with a bamboo basket filled with the emperors beloved “golden daisies” to trade for the “herb of youth”. They didn’t make it too far before the quest was ended by a typhoon that left them shipwrecked on a rocky archipelago. With their journey at an end, the survivors planted the revered mums and set about exploring their new home. Over the years, the survivor’s descendants populated the islands we now know as Japan. Their reverence for chrysanthemums continued and they were eventually considered the exclusive property of their emperor. In 910 AD, the Japanese Emperor displayed his prized plants at the first Imperial Chrysanthemum Show and declared them to be the national flower of Japan. In 1876, another Japanese emperor created the Order of the Chrysanthemum as the highest honor he could bestow on an individual. The Japanese word “kiku” represents both the chrysanthemum and the office of the emperor. The royal crest is a traditional sixteen-petal chrysanthemum design. European interest in Chrysanthemums budded with the arrival of plants brought back from the orient by Dutch traders in the early eighteenth century. The Dutch are known to have produced several new varieties from the original plants but, it was the horticulturally adept French Huguenots that are credited with real improvements in flower size and color. The Huguenots developed “Old Purple” which became a favorite all over the continent. Chrysanthemums came to North America in 1798 in the hands of John Stevens, a nurseryman from Hoboken. By 1850 the Chrysanthemum society of America had been founded and they held their first show in 1902. Lately, perennial asters have become a popular contender for champion of fall color in the flowerbed. Compared to the venerable chrysanthemum, asters are a relatively recent upstart. Their appeal to American gardeners may have been limited since they were a common sight along the roadside every fall. To early Americans, there was nothing special about this common plant. English gardeners, visiting their colonial cousins found asters to be quite lovely and brought seeds back to the British Isles with them. So, even though asters are a native North American plant, they became a popular fall-blooming plant in the gardens of England long before Americans learned to appreciate them. It’s a classic case of one man’s trash becoming another’s treasure. Anyway, asters are an easy-to-grow alternative to mums. They’re now available in an amazing assortment of colors and styles. Asters branch heavily without all the pinching mums need. They’re quite insect and disease resistant (as are mums). Like mums, asters should be planted in full sun in soil that’s been enriched with organic matter like composted manure or peat moss and, as always, bone meal. The area should also be well drained but not excessively dry. The fine, dark green foliage of asters is quite attractive, making a lovely background for lower, summer-flowering annuals or perennials. Both mums and asters mature quickly and should be divided in early spring every two or three years. Whichever you choose you’ll enjoy great fall color for many years to come. Heck, why choose! Grow them both. Thanks for the read.

(CDHA.NET) is an all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving animals of all kinds throughout the cap-ital region and beyond since 1988. TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR VEHICLE ROAD

TRIP READY(NAPS)—As the weather gets warm, vacationers will begin to set their sights on the open road. Whether it’s to get up close to that landmark that you’ve al-ways wanted to see, visit old friends or visit extended family who live just a few states away, road trips offer great flexibility and excite-ment.

While just about any vehicle will serve its purpose for a road trip, there are ways to modify a car or truck to make the experience more convenient and comfort-able. In fact, the Specialty Equipment Market Associa-tion (SEMA) estimates that Americans spend $33 billion annually on products that enhance the performance and styling of today’s ve-hicles.

“There is something exhila-rating about a leisurely drive, whether it’s sitting in a com-fortable air-conditioned car with a great sound system or in a convertible with the top down,” said Peter MacGilli-vray, SEMA VP of communi-cations and events. “What’s really great is being able to personalize the vehicle to fit the needs of the drivers and passengers.”

Below are a few tips and tricks on how you can make your vehicle ready for your next big road trip.

• To protect thevehicle’s exterior from any rocky weather and/or road conditions, a paint protec-tion film is an effective way to preserve the finish of your car, truck or SUV. For best results, this film should be professionally installed and applied on areas such as the hood, bumpers, mirror backs and other places that might be prone to scratches and chips.

• Don’t underesti-mate the impact a good nav-igation system can have on your road trip. Aftermarket GPS and navigation systems with state-of-the-art tech-nologies can be installed in just about any vehicle. Start-ing as low as $50, there are tons of options available to help you stay within your budget and get you to your destination.

• Finding enoughspace is often a problem en-countered when traveling on a road trip. To make room for personal items, consider a roof rack or cargo box to transport large pieces of luggage. Organizers for the trunk, center console and on the back of seats are avail-able to help keep items in order and in arms’ reach.

• Awirelesstirepres-sure monitoring system can give you an accurate read-ing of your tire pressure at all times. By having sensors on each of the tires, the air pressure can be monitored and sent directly to your smartphone device, alerting you when one or more of your tires is low on pressure. This can help minimize any tire problems you might run into.

Regardless of how you mod-ify your vehicle, it’s always a good idea to have a roadside emergency kit in tow. Pre-made kits include items such as jumper cables, a flash-light, emergency whistle and a first-aid kit. You never know when you might need these things, so it is better to be safe than sorry.

Wherever you’re headed, there are a variety of differ-ent automotive aftermarket products and accessories available to modify your vehicle in preparation for a road trip. To learn more and find out where these prod-ucts are available to you, visit www.semaignited.com.

HIGH TECH CAN MAKE DRIVING SAFER

(NAPS)—More than 420,000 people are injured each year in motor vehicle accidents involving distracted driv-ers—but technology can help reduce your risk by improving your awareness behind the wheel, no mat-ter how old your vehicle may be.

Safe Solutions

Safe driving starts with smart decisions. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) firmly believes safety is para-mount in a moving vehicle, and a driver’s highest prior-ity must be maintaining safe control at all times. That’s why CEA supports legisla-tion that bans texting while driving and places strict lim-its on the use of electronics by novice drivers. CEA also developed the Innovating Safety campaign to help consumers and improve

awareness and understand-ing of the broad spectrum of safety-enhancing technolo-gies available today.

Distraction Behind the Wheel

All kinds of things can dis-tract you when you’re driv-ing—using your phone, day-dreaming, talking to your passengers or paying atten-tion to anything other than the road ahead. Statistically speaking, newer drivers are over-represented in fatal-ity and injury crash statis-tics, and studies have found

that teens are more prone to dangerous distractions while driving.

Innovation Can Improve Drive Safety

For parents wondering what they can do to improve their teenagers’ driving habits, there are all kinds of prod-ucts available to help. Some products limit cell phone us-age and texting abilities and create incentives for good driving behavior. Other de-vices connect you to your car, even when you’re not in it, letting parents access

information on their teens’ driving habits, set “safety zones” and monitor vehicle location.

More advanced driver-mon-itoring solutions track the driver’s eye movements and whether the driver’s hands are on the wheel. This tech-nology can then initiate corrective action when the driver’s behavior appears to match that of a distracted person. Other high-tech safety products include blind spot indicators, back-up cameras and crash avoid-ance systems that help driv-

ers increase their awareness of other cars, pedestrians and dangerous obstructions. Additionally, voice-activated GPS navigational systems enhance situational aware-ness.

New-Car Tech For Your Old-Tech Car

The primary vehicles for most American drivers are more than 11 years old. For-tunately, many technology companies are developing a broad range of aftermarket devices that can be installed seamlessly in most cars to enhance the safety.

For expert advice on solu-tions and installation for your vehicle, look for retail-ers whose installers carry the CEA Mobile Electronics Cer-tified Professionals (MECP) certification. There are more than 3,500 MECP installers in the U.S. These experts have the training to ensure you pick the right solution and

the skill to install it correctly.

After all, smart driving starts with smart decisions.
