It’s hard to believe that all the beauty of our fl owerbeds is only a month away from getting frosted away. Maybe we’ll be lucky and frost will hold off until sometime in October. We can hope that we get a little extra growing season this fall but Mother Nature plays by no one’s rules and will do what she’ll do regardless of what we wish would happen. With that in mind, the wise gardener will proceed with the annual cycle and dive right into fall planting projects while there are still nice days left to work outside in the garden. The day will soon arrive when it’ll be too cold to enjoy working outside and you’ll be kicking yourself for not taking advantage earlier when it was pleasant. One of my favorite tasks is adding to our col-lection of spring fl owering bulbs that need to be planted now.

Planting bulbs in fall gives us a chance to thumb our noses at winter. It is an act of faith. By planting these bulbs, we are saying, “I know that the next season will arrive a little brighter and better.” You may be planting fl ower bulbs, but you are really sowing Nature’s promise that the dark days of winter will eventually pass.

These small bulbs are a miracle in themselves. Think of them as rechargeable batteries. They don’t store electricity but “growth energy”. When you buy bulbs, they’re all “charged up” for you by the producer in Holland.

When you shop for bulbs, look for the largest you can fi nd. Bulbs produced in Holland are still the best available. The Dutch have been active in bulb culture since the 1500s so they’ve had a lot of practice.

Make sure that the area you wish to plant is sunny and well drained. Well-drained means that the area dries rapidly enough after rain to avoid standing water.

I don’t have space enough here to describe all the planting depths and spacing require-ments of the myriad of bulbs available. This information is on the bulb’s packaging. Look for “early”, “mid” and “late” fl owering designations when shopping for bulbs. This will help you stage the progression of color in your garden. Generally, crocus and other small bulbs fl ower earlier than the larger, showier bulbs like allium. Flower heights are noted on the packages as well so you can avoid planting shorter varieties behind taller ones.

Make sure to build up the soil where you are planting your bulbs. The most important soil additive you’ll need is bone meal. The phosphorus in bone meal is vital in restoring and expanding the bulbs after the fl owering period. It should be mixed with the soil BELOW the bulb so the roots grow down through it. Bone meal doesn’t dissolve like chemical fertilizer so your only chance to use it is when you’re planting. The phosphorus in bone meal lasts 4 or 5 years. By then, with proper feeding and care, the bulbs will need to be divided and replanted with more bone meal.

After you plant you bulbs, be sure to water them in right away. They will take advantage of the cool weather to grow roots into their new home.

The trick to perpetual success with bulbs is knowing how to “recharge” the bulbs after they fl ower in spring. The “growth energy” stored in the bulb is depleted quickly during the all-out effort to reproduce (fl ower) in spring. After the fl owers go by, cut them off including the stem. This prevents the bulb from wasting “growth energy” producing seeds. The “growth energy” that would have been spent producing seeds is directed to the bulb where it is stored until the next spring’s fl owering cycle. Feed your bulbs during their growth cycle; starting when the fi rst shoots appear in spring. Bulb food (my favorite is Bulb-Tone) will provide the balance of nutrients your bulbs will need in addition to the phosphorus from the bone meal.

Think of the leaves of your bulbs as solar collectors that change sunlight into more “growth energy” that is sent to the bulb below for storage. Don’t cut these solar collectors off when you remove the spent blossoms in spring. Let them remain until they fi nish charging up your “bulb batteries”. They will eventually turn yellow, letting you know that it’s time to cut them off.

Remember, bulbs look best when planted in groups of fi ve or more. I prefer to plant them in irregular “drifts” for a more natural appearance. This is a matter of taste so, feel free to use your imagination. Have fun! Thanks for the read.

BeBe

Bear

Bianca & BellaBianca & Bella are extremely unique long haired Siamese/

tabby mix with a few extra toes. Both 3 years old, Bianca is outgoing and enjoys being right in the middle of everything. Bianca is also a talker and likes to get your attention with a few “Meows” while Bella is a gentle little lady that will sit on your lap and let you pet her for hours and hours. How about their beautiful baby blues? Bianca is a slightly more dominant kitty than her sweet sister Bella but they get along great and have always been together. Bianca and Bella’s previous owner did not understand the responsibility of “cat guardian” and only liked them when they were kitten cute. Now that they have grown into gorgeous adult kitties she no longer wants them and surrendered them to HOPE. While both kitties

would do fine in a home on their own it would be fantastic to keep these two sisters together! Please consider giving these ladies a chance to know what it’s like to live with humans that

really love them forever. Bianca & Bella are spayed, up to date on her shots and negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia.

For more information please call #518.428.2994

BeBe is a very sweet 2 year old Pekingese girl; her favorite place is in someone’s lap being petted. BeBe is good with older children, dogs, cats, and is house

trained and crate trained. She will be best in a quiet home because she has nerve damage in back right

leg which she drags; she cannot go up or down stairs. What she lacks in mobility she makes up with her sweet and loving personality. If you want a dog to

love and sit in your lap and love you back she is the one for you! BeBe is spayed, up to date on her shots, and microchipped. For more information, please call

518-424-2878.

Bear is a 3-year old male Beagle. He’s a very sweet dog! Bear gets along with kids, dogs, and cats and will make a great addition to your family. Bear is housebro-ken, but he does need some basic training. Bear is neu-tered, is up to date on his shots, and is microchipped.

For more information, please call 518-424-2878

PREPARE FOR YOUR ENCORE CAREER

(NAPS)—Whether you call it a second act or an encore career, or it’s just your desire to do a complete 180 in your profes-sion, one thing remains the same: The path to reinvention often means taking your current job skills and giving them a new twist.

Expert Advice

To make it easier to navigate that sometimes winding career path, especially in today’s global economy, Dr. Ward Ulmer, associate dean of Walden University’s College of Manage-ment and Technology, off ers some advice.

How To Do It

“Once you’ve decided you want a diff erent career path, you have to prepare and make yourself marketable,” Dr. Ulmer says.

First, he suggests, identify and assess your skills. Jot down what you do well and what career you want to break into. Find out what you need to get there. You may need a new skill set, or you could also take skills from your fi rst career, your education or even your hobby or volunteer activities to your new position. Get a second opinion from someone you trust who will be honest about your skills.

Research the industry, trends, opportunities and even pos-sible pitfalls of this new career.

Tailor your résumé toward the employer or industry you want. Pay special attention to skills and qualities that poten-tial employers are seeking.

What Can Help

“Technology facilitates many possibilities not available even a few years ago. You’re also no longer constrained by geog-raphy,” Dr. Ulmer explains. “However, in this new global mar-ketplace, there may be certain skills you’ll need to acquire.”

One skill is the ability to communicate eff ectively with peo-ple of diff erent cultures because what may be perfectly ac-ceptable in one part of the world may be frowned on in other parts.

Be A Lifelong Learner

It’s wise to be a lifelong learner, building the skills you need for your encore career even while still working at your cur-rent job. An online training seminar about communication or a class your company is off ering can help.

More formal educational opportunities can also be useful. That may mean getting a graduate or postgraduate degree.

At Walden University, Dr. Ulmer points out, online students often work as part of virtual teams with a common goal. They collaborate in the online environment with international faculty and students, giving them a new ability to adapt and

communicate with other cultures and countries.

Through online discussion boards or other classroom activi-ties, they develop new skills to work more eff ectively and ef-fi ciently with others, regardless of geographic location.

NEW CAR TECHNOLOGY MAY TAKE THE WHEEL OUT OF HUMAN HANDS

(NewsUSA) - Google has been making news in re-cent months for its work in a ground-breaking area: driv-erless automobile technol-ogy.

A prototype of Google's new self-driving car -- a two-passenger electric vehicle with buttons to turn the vehicle on and off , but no steering wheel, accelerator pedal or brake pedal -- was unveiled in May. Without a driver at the wheel, the car is instead guided by a light detection and ranging (LI-DAR) rotating sensor on the vehicle's roof that scan the vehicle's surroundings to determine its driving route as well as to identify such obstacles as pedestrians, bi-cyclists and other cars.

While Google is widely considered a front-runner in the development of such ad-vanced automation technol-ogy, the major automakers are also getting into the race. Albeit at a more conserva-tive pace, they're introduc-ing automated features that perform specifi c tasks -- such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and collision-avoidance braking -- to their new car models.

According to a recent re-port by Lux Research, cars with these so-called "Level 2" features are expected to account for 92 percent of a worldwide $87 billion-per-year autonomous car market by 2030. Only 8 percent of the market will go to "Level 3" cars, which would be pri-marily driven autonomously, but would allow drivers to regain control of the vehicle in an emergency.

In addition, the research fi rm doesn't expect any fully automated vehicles on the road by 2030. "We consider that ultimate level, Level 4, to be full autonomy, where you just get in and you don't interact with the car at all,"

explained Cosmin Laslau, lead analyst at Lux Research. "And we don't think that's coming by 2030. The biggest opportunity that we see will be actually from the Level 2 features, which are the more conventional advances that we're already starting to see come onto the market from higher-end developers."

Hermann Winner, director and professor of automotive engineering at Germany's Technische Universit?t Darm-stadt, agreed. "We will start with a partially automated car, then a highly automated one," he said, adding that he doesn't expect a completely autonomous car -- one with no specifi c limitations with

respect to traffi c environ-ment or driving speed -- on the market for the next 40 years. "The big challenge to total automation is getting safety approval. Even if you assume the system is ready by 2020, approval is going to be problematic."

Winner is scheduled to address the challenges fac-ing the development of the driverless car during the panel session "IT Meets the Automobile: Interactive Ad-vanced Vehicle Technolo-gies and Self-Driving Cars" at the ASME Advanced Design and Manufacturing Impact Forum in Buff alo, New York. Visit www.asme.org for more information.

TOP CAR COLOR CHOICES

OF MEN AND WOMEN

(NAPS)—When it comes to car colors, men and women follow diff erent roads.

Colorful Findings

A recent study by iSeeCars.com of more than 30 million cars revealed some illumi-nating information about just how the sexes diverge:

• Surprisingly, the favored car color of men is red, a hue they have a greater prefer-ence for, versus women, by 12.3 percent. Next is orange, which men prefer more by 11.8 percent, and black by 9.6 percent.

• Metallic colors are more popular with women. As op-posed to men, women have a greater penchant for silver cars by 9.2 percent, brown by 9.1 percent and gold by 7.3 percent.

• Red and black, preferred car color picks of men, are also the top colors for sports cars. For pick-

up trucks, white is the most popular color.

• Orange, a less-common car color option but a favorite of men, is found on sports cars and cou-pés more than any other vehicle type.

The study was con-ducted by iSeeCars.com, a car search en-

gine that helps consumers fi nd the best deals on used cars.

What It All Means

“These study results could suggest that women are more practical in their choices. For the most part, they may just want to buy a reasonably priced car that safely drives them around,” suggested Phong Ly, co-founder and CEO of iSee-Cars.com. “On the other hand, for men, perhaps they may be a bit more idealistic about cars, preferring something that

has speed and is fun to drive.”

FIND OUT THE MEANING BEHIND THE NUMBERS AT THE GAS PUMP

(NAPS)—Are you one of the millions of Americans who will load up their car this summer and head out for a weekend getaway? If you are, you might be paying the price at the gas pump. Across the U.S., consumers paid the highest average price for gas on the Fourth of July since 2008. Like many, you may question why gas prices peak in the summer. What goes into the price of gas? To understand why, you need to con-sider the whole story.
