STARS FOR OUR TROOPSCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or con-tacting [email protected].

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

ECO-FRIENDLY GIFT IDEAS FOR ‘GREEN’ GIVING

Giving eco-friendly gifts is now easier than ever before. As more and more people are conscious of reducing their im-pact on the planet, the demand for environmentally con-scious products and services has grown.

Choosing earth-friendly gifts is not only generous, but gift-givers also can rest assured they’re doing their part to safe-guard natural resources for future generations. The following are some gift ideas for the eco-conscious people on your holiday shopping list.

Locally made productsLocally made products make great holiday gifts. Such gifts are not produced halfway around the world, meaning they don’t contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming like products that need to be flown or driven across the globe. Craft fairs and artisan shops are good sources for locally made gifts, which also are a great way to support busi-nesses in your community.

Gifts of serviceA massage or music or tutoring sessions are examples of gifts of service. These gifts do not require much use of natu-ral resources, and recipients find their personal nature very thoughtful. Gifts of service also can include tasks you do yourself for the gift recipient, rather than paying another per-son to handle. For example, teach a senior member of your family how to navigate their new smartphone or agree to help them shop for groceries.

Recycled goodsWhen many people think of recycling, they tend to picture piles of discarded plastic bottles, glass jars and aluminum cans. While the end product of many of these recycled pieces is new cans, bottles and jars, recycled materials also can be turned into new and unique pieces. Trivets and spoon rests made from recycled and melted wine bottles make for clever and attractive gifts. Recycled fire extinguishers have been turned into vases, and you can even find bike parts that have been used to make wind chimes and belts if you know where to shop.

Natural giftsNatural gifts are among the most environmentally friendly ones you can give. Foodies may appreciate an herb-growing kit that enables them to experiment with freshly picked basil or thyme in the kitchen, while tree-growing kits and flower seed packets are nice stocking stuffers for budding garden-ers. Offer to purchase a living Christmas tree for a relative, so that he or she can plant the evergreen after the holidays have come and gone.

AntiquesNew, shiny gifts are not the only ones that have appeal. Gift-ing a sentimental piece of family history is an earth-friendly way to share the holidays. Pass down a cherished piece of jewelry or, if you do not have anything in your own collec-tion, browse antique shops for items that have interesting histories.

The holiday season is often a time of excess, but giving doesn’t have to be detrimental to the environment. Givers can seek out earth-friendly gifts and share even more this time of year.

HOW TO ESTABLISH GIFT SPENDING LIMITS

As the cost of living continues to rise, holiday shopping also has become much more expensive in recent years, and it can be easy for shoppers to overextend themselves finan-cially come the holiday season. According to a recent Gal-lup poll, the average American plans to spend around $790 per holiday season, although many go above and beyond that amount. Starting off the new year in debt is a recipe for stress, which can have negative repercussions for the rest of the year.

In addition to overspending during the holiday season, many people stretch themselves thin on Valentine’s Day, birthdays, and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. One way to make shop-ping more manageable is to establish spending limits that dictate how much each family member can spend on each gift he or she buys.

It is important to exercise tact when approaching the sub-ject of gift limits. Discuss the topic with friends and family members with whom you usually exchange gifts long before the holiday season. Agree on a reasonable amount of money each person will spend on gifts. If necessary, ask everyone to write down a figure and then determine the average, using that figure as your spending limit. Establishing a spending limit makes it easier for every family to afford their holiday purchases. If there are six people on your shopping list and you’re spending $50 per person, you know to allocate $300 for gifts. Saving and budgeting can be adjusted accordingly.

When no such limit is established, you may go overboard to compensate, even if you cannot afford to do so. Another way to save money is to suggest giving the gift of experiences rather than tangible and potentially costly gifts. For example, take a loved one out for dinner or suggest going on vacation together to make better use of your collective funds. A well-timed extended family vacation in lieu of gift exchanges may

alleviate the stress of the holiday season, much of which can be traced to holiday spending.

Establishing a gift-giving strategy and budget for each per-son to work with can make for a more peaceful holiday sea-son by freeing up time to spend with loved ones and placing the focus on family instead of shopping.

GREAT GIFTS FOR MUSIC LOVERS Finding the right gift come the holiday season is not always so simple. Many people on your list may seem as though they already have everything they could ever want or need, mak-ing it hard to find them a gift they will truly enjoy.

A great way to find the right gift is to think of a loved one’s hobbies and find something that fosters those passions. Many people love music, and if there happens to be a bud-ding musician or someone who simply loves to rock on your list, then the following gifts may be music to their ears.

• Concert tickets: The ulti-mate gift for many music fans is tickets to see their favorite performer in person. Concert tickets can sell out quickly, so research when tickets will be going on sale and be prepared to purchase them as early as possible. Some credit card companies sponsor concerts and make special arrangements with venues to offer cardholders advanced deals or special packages. Find out if your credit card company has such an offer available for the concert you are buying

tickets for.

• Digital gift card: Gone are the days when music fans visit a record store to purchase vinyl records, cassette tapes and even CDs. Many music fans now listen exclusively to digital music, so a gift card for digital downloads from Amazon or iTunes makes a great gift. A subscription to a music-stream-ing service also makes a great gift.

• Theater tickets: Some people’s love of music stems from their love of live theater. Even if your loved one lives nowhere near the bright lights of Broadway, touring companies that perform popular Broadway shows visit cities both big and small across the country. Tickets to such shows can stoke your loved one’s passion for music and make for a great night out on the town.

• Music lessons: Perhaps your loved one is a budding musi-cian who can benefit from professional instruction? A great way to encourage their aspirations is to finance their lessons with local music or vocal instructors. Visit a nearby college or school for recommendations on local instructors. The fran-chise “School of Rock” has regional locations and offers musi-cal training as well.

• Music store gift certificate: Musicians often need to repair or replace their instruments, so a gift card to a music store can make for a much-needed and appreciated gift. Repairs and new instruments can be expensive, so if you plan to go this route, put enough money on the card to make a significant dent at the register.

• Gadgets: Each year the market seems to offer newer and better ways to listen to music, and these gadgets may be on your loved one’s wish list.

DID YOU KNOW? Though there is no official data that declares the best-selling holiday toy for children of all-time, it’s fair to assume the lovable “Sesame Street” figure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the first Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its stomach. During the holiday season of 1996, many people paid far beyond market price just so their children could wake up on Christmas or Chanukah and have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been reincarnated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to inspire its own craze come the holiday season. Released in 1998, Walk ‘N’ Talk Elmo was a popular children’s gift, as was Rock ‘N’ Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chicken Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006, Mattel®, the company that produces the Elmo dolls, announced a special commemorative Elmo to mark the 10-year anniversary of the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some reports indicated private sellers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousands of dollars.

Adopt A Pet...Pets of the WeekAdopt A Pet...Pets of the Week

Calling all couch potatoes!!! This chunky monkey is ready to plop down beside you. Bailey loves to be scratched and prefers to be right near you all the time, normally on the sofa, where he likes to sleep half-on/half-off your lap (at 17 pounds he’s almost too big to fit all the way). When really happy he will roll around on the floor and “rough-house”— occasionally giving little love-nips if you get him too excited. When scared Bailey will vocalize with

Hershey is a female Pointer/pit mix who is 4-5 yrs old and weighs around 40 lbs. She is a a wonderful dog - she is

currently living with 6 cats and 2 children under 5 yrs old. Hershey has lived with dogs and is good with them. She is

very sweet and loving and will make a great pet for someone. Hershey is spayed, is up to date on her shots and is micro chipped. For more information, please call #518-424-2878

Gabby is a black and white female, almost 2 yrs. old. She’s a sweet, independent, calm little lady. Gabby enjoys hiding in boxes, surprising her

friends as they walk by and having you throw a ball that she can chase. At night she insists on

snuggling right up next to you and you will wake up having her stare at you until you get up and give her a treat. Gabby gets along with other

cats and still plays with her dog friends. Gabby is spayed and up to date on her shots

a soft growl, he has never been aggressive, that’s just him letting everyone know that it’s “personal space” time. His favorite food is dry kibble although he does like to lick up the gravy in canned

food. Bailey is a gentle and loving cat. He would probably do best in a quiet house without children however he is good with other cats. All HOPE cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on their shots,

and have tested negative for Feline Leukemia and FIV.

It’s this Moment

Comes a time on Christmas Eve

When all the gifts are bought

And wrapped and tied with shiny

Bows and placed beneath the tree.

Shops are closed,

Locked up tight.

Even merchants hurry home

On this enchanted night.

A glass of wine perhaps a kiss

Beneath the mistletoe.

Evening fades as night begins

And children dream of gifts.

Late that night stillness comes

Magic spills over the land

As every creature of the earth

Feels the promise of The Son.

Humblest home and greatest hall

Are wrapped in a mother’s love.

It’s this moment I hold most dear

When peace fills the hearts of all.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

WINTER SUPERFOODS FOR OPTIMAL

HEALTH Illnesses seem to peak dur-ing the winter months. A tapped-out immune system as well as dry, cold air may encourage the spread of common viruses and bacte-rial infections more easily. As a result, it’s important that men, women and children take every step possible to ward off sickness when the temperatures drop. Dietary

changes can make a world of difference, and more and more people are including these proven superfoods in their winter diets.

• Avocado: Avocado has high levels of essential fatty acids and vitamin B6, which is im-portant in the biosynthesis of important neurotransmit-ters. Foods high in B vitamins may be able to counteract some of the symptoms of winter-related depression.

• Pomegranate: This quirky fruit has vitamins C and K, fo-

late and potassium and is a good source of fiber. Pome-granate has anti-inflamma-tory properties, which can help in reducing joint pain and preventing strokes. Pomegranate may also help the body fight viruses.

• Cinnamon: Cinnamon has high levels of antioxidants, and some studies point to cinnamon as a natural antibacterial agent. Cinna-mon also can help regulate blood-glucose levels, which is beneficial for those with diabetes.

• Prunes: Now widely re-ferred to as “dried plums,” prunes are an important source of boron, which could prevent osteoporosis. High in antioxidants, prunes help the body fight a variety of illnesses.

• Cabbage: Cabbage may be a key element in the fight against cancer. Cabbage has phytochemicals that can protect the body against cancer-causing free radi-cals. It’s also a good source of dietary fiber, which can stimulate a sluggish diges-tive system.

• Butternut squash: This food is packed with carotenoids, which are stellar antioxi-dants. The starches in this squash also have been found to have anti-inflammatory properties.

• Chestnuts: Chestnuts are worthy of inclusion in any-one’s diet. Unlike many nuts, chestnuts are relatively low in fat but have high levels of protein. They’re also packed with vitamin C and B vita-mins.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER

BEFORE SELLING

YOUR HOMESelling a home is no small undertaking. It often pays to be patient when putting a property up for sale, but waiting for an acceptable off er can be stressful, espe-cially for those homeown-ers who have already found their next homes.

Because so much tends to be riding on the decision of whether or not to sell a home, homeowners would

be wise to consider the fol-lowing factors before put-ting that “For Sale” sign in their front yards.

• Motivation: Many home-owners sell their homes because their families are growing and they have outgrown their current residences. Others may rec-ognize a seller’s real estate market and want to strike while the iron is hot, while still others might be mov-ing for a new job. The factors that motivate homeowners to sell their homes vary with each individual case, but prospective sellers should

keep in mind that moving can be expensive, and fi nd-ing a new home may not be so easy, nor is the grass nec-essarily greener on the other side. When deciding if now is the best time to sell your home, make sure you will be selling for the right reason. That can make the often try-ing process of selling a home a lot easier to handle.

• Market: The local real es-tate market is another factor to consider when deciding whether or not to sell your home. A home is a signifi -cant investment, and you want to earn as substantial a return on that investment as possible. Selling when the market is struggling will make your investment less valuable. Research recently sold homes in your neigh-borhood to get an idea of how much you can expect to get if you sold your home in the current market. It might be worth it to sell now, or it might pay off to be patient and wait until the market re-bounds.

• Kids: Selling your home will impact your family just like it will impact your bot-tom line. Unless you plan to move down the street or to another home in your community, selling may mean you and your family no longer see your friends and neighbors. That can be a diffi cult adjustment, espe-cially for school-aged kids who will have to adjust to a new school. The potentially negative impact that selling can have on your children may not be worth the fi nan-cial benefi ts of selling, so the decision of whether or not to sell should not be taken lightly by homeowners who also happen to be parents.

• Quality of life: It can be dif-fi cult to turn down an op-portunity to make a lot of money on your real estate investment. But if you plan to sell and move further away from your offi ce and your friends and family, the fi nancial windfall you earn when selling your home may not be worth the sacrifi ces

you have to make in order to earn that money. Stud-ies have shown that longer commutes can elevate stress levels, and even the most af-fordable property may not be worth moving to if you won’t be able to enjoy the home with your friends and family.

When deciding whether or not to sell their homes, many homeowners make the deci-sion a strictly fi nancial one. But there is more than mon-ey to consider when decid-ing if now is the right time to sell your home.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND IN THE NONPROFIT SECTOR

Nonprofi t organizations require the talents of many diff erent types of workers and not just those looking to volunteer.

According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, more than 1.4 million nonprofi t organizations operate within the United States alone, so individuals who hope to work in the nonprofi t sector have many organizations to choose from.

Even though they do not aim to turn a profi t, nonprofi t or-ganizations still face the same challenges and have the same needs, including the need for competent staff members, as many for-profi t businesses. In addition to earning their liv-ings, employees of nonprofi t organizations often thrive on the notion that they are doing their share to make a diff er-ence in the world.

As with any other company, nonprofi ts have to fi ll certain roles in an organization. The following are some common job descriptions as they pertain to nonprofi t organizations.

• Executive offi cer: The executive director or president of a nonprofi t reports directly to the organization’s Board of Di-rectors. He or she will have strategic and operational respon-sibility for the nonprofi t’s staff , expansion, programs, and daily mission. The ED will serve as a coach to help retain and develop the nonprofi t’s senior management team, depend-ing on the size of the organization. He or she also will serve as a liaison between the board and the employees.

• Chief fi nancial offi cer: The size of a nonprofi t, the com-plexity of its programs and its revenue sources will drive the responsibilities of the CFO. At smaller nonprofi ts, the CFO may branch out beyond complex fi nance and investment activities to take on functional and even problem-solving capabili-ties. At larger nonprofi ts, the CFO may be more involved with reporting and meeting the requirements of govern-ment contracts.

• Fundraisers: Fundraising is a key component for non-profi ts and how many of

them remain operational. Portions of fundraising eff orts are devoted to corporate operations, while the remainder will be allocated for the cause. Fundraising can be broken down fur-ther into various niches, depending on the nonprofi t’s size. Annual funds, alumni aff airs, direct marketing, grant seeking, and donor relations are various parts of the larger fundraising picture. If the nonprofi t has a large fundraising staff , each of these divisions may be handled separately. Otherwise, all of them may be grouped under the umbrella fundraising title.

• Public relation specialist: A public relations or marketing pro-fessional works with senior management or independently to develop a communications plan for the organization. He or she will develop the nonprofi t’s core messages and ensure consistency across various media. A PR professional also will respond to inquiries about the organization. In times of cri-sis, the PR professional will downplay any negative news and work to shed positive light on the organization.

• Administrative roles: Nonprofi ts need accounting and fi -nancial professionals, offi ce administrators, human resources employees, information systems and IT workers, and a staff to handle marketing. Administrative positions often overlap inside small nonprofi t organizations.

Nonprofi ts may not have the same pay structure as other private organizations, but nonprofi t professionals often fi nd their jobs rewarding.

COVERING YOUR PICKUP’S BED IN STYLE

(NAPS)—There’s good news for those who love their pickup truck—whether they use it for work or fun.

There’s a new high-perfor-mance bed cover that com-bines convenience and dura-bility. As an added plus, the cover’s unique design can keep your truck’s fi fth wheel hitch covered—good news for those who want to haul a trailer, boat or bike.

Protecting The Fifth Wheel Hitch

Called the Bedlocker Elec-tric from Pace Edwards, the high-performance bed cover protects your fi fth wheel hitch and secures the gear

you need to store in your pickup’s bed.

Manufactured in a way that makes installation easy, it can be opened and closed with the push of a button. The hard tonneau cover re-

tracts into a canister at the front of the truck bed. There’s a durable black powder-coat fi nish on rigid aluminum panels that’s both sturdy and attractive.

An electromagnetic brake locks the cover in any posi-tion, even while driving, and a low-profi le, aerodynamic design can help to save gas.

An Innovative Tonneau

Another convenient option

for those seeking a truck bed cover is available from the same manufacturer. Called the SWITCHBLADE, this in-novative tonneau can be installed and removed with ease. A Continuous Tension Spring helps the cover re-tract smoothly and easily in just seconds.

It has a removable canister for total truck bed access and maximum cargo capac-ity. The only tools needed for installation or removal are a phillips screwdriver and 7⁄16” wrench. The cover is made with tough ArmorTek construction—a padded polymer bonded to rigid alu-minum panels.
