Abandoned the idea of human and religious experience, instead painted realistic naturalism.

Some artists thought that some of his paintings were disrespectful and lacking in devotion.

Made chiaroscuro well known.– Instead of elaborate settings, he painted

figures in shadows that emphasize the drama of the scene and the poverty of the participants.
