Dear Barrett Students:
The coming academic year will bring many exciting things for
Barrett Downtown, including the riveting courses and engaging
events highlighted in this newsletter. One of the most antici-
pated events is certainly the move to our new space. Sched-
uled to move this summer, our offices will be located off the
lobby of the University Center Building, in Suite 166 (where
Enrollment Services is now).
In our new facility, Barrett students will have exclusive access
to computer work stations, limited free printing and a student
lounge, among other amenities. Additionally, one of our of-
fices will be designated to Barrett Faculty Fellow, Dr. Eric
Susser, who has instructed various honors courses on the
Downtown campus and will be teaching full-time at the DPc in
the Fall. We could not be more pleased with the outcome of
our efforts to procure improved space and resources for stu-
dents. I thank you for your patience and input as this hap-
pened.
Please join us to celebrate the new facility during our
Grand Opening Ceremony,
which will take place from
4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on
Monday, August 16, 2010.
I hope to see you there!
Sincerely yours,
Laura R. Peck, Ph.D.

A MESSAGE FROM ASSOCIATE DEAN PECK
Floorplan: Barrett Downtown, Fall 2010
Barrett students from all campuses had the opportunity to walk through more than 300 hands-on
exhibits at the Arizona Science Center during “Adults‟ Night Out”. Students also heard US Airways
Phoenix Tower Operation Director Matt Eggers give an inside look at Phoenix hub operations, and
saw a planetarium presentation featuring “Stars of the Pharaohs.”

Students were wowed by the brilliant Broadway musical “[title of show] ,”
dubbed by the Arizona Theatre Company as “an entertaining, tongue-in-cheek
musical about show business and making one‟s dreams come true.”
The Barrett Leadership & Service Team Downtown organized a fantastic Friday night exploring three deli-
cious restaurants along the METRO Light Rail. Festivities started at the newly opened Cartel Coffee Lab,
then moved to Hula‟s Modern Tiki for appetizers and concluded at Maizie‟s Café & Bistro for the final course.

This semester, students dined with two distinguished leaders on the Downtown campus:
College of Public Programs Dean and Vice President of ASU, Debra Friedman,
and Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications Dean, Chris Callahan.
ASU‟s Downtown campus launched its spring installation of artwork, which includes an exhibit dedi-
cated solely to showcasing Barrett student artists. Opening night featured a number of perform-
ances from local community members and organizations and attracted quite a large crowd.

Family, friends and students gathered in the Cronkite Theater to view four Barrett student docu-
mentaries produced as honors thesis projects. Titles included: “Mixed Rice: Japanese Americans
and Interracial Marriage” by Maxine Park; “Living Homeless: Kids on the Street” by Tara Prindiville; “Lodestar: a Holistic Haven
for Help and Humanity” by Jessica Andrews and Denica Moodey; and “Silent Voices: The Underrepresentation of Native Ameri-
cans in Local News” by Colton Shone.

Which fork do you use? How do you sit? What are “proper table manners”? Students learned all about man-
ners during the Barrett Downtown Etiquette Dinner, hosted in collaboration with Downtown Career Services.
Students wrapped the year with a wild night of skating, games, food and fun, during the
„80‟s Roller Disco Mania, sponsored by the Barrett Leadership & Service Team Downtown.
Starting at the Downtown campus, students traversed the city by party bus, stopping first
at Great Skate, next at Dave & Buster‟s, and then returning to the ASU Downtown campus.

Students attended an open forum with Barrett Dean Mark Jacobs and Associate Dean Laura Peck.
The deans discussed and answered questions about hot topics related to Barrett, including the
College‟s new Downtown space, student programming, fees, and more! Following the Town Hall,
students dined with both deans at Thai Elephant, a local Downtown Phoenix restaurant.

Speaker, author, and organizer Guy Dauncey—Barrett‟s 2010 Rhodes Lecturer—visited the Downtown campus
to discuss the realities of global warming and sustainable solutions with students over lunch.

BLAST‟D celebrated the end of the year by hosting a
night of “„80‟s Roller Disco Mania!” Students donned
their best 80‟s attire in an attempt to win the coveted
“best-dressed” award. The party started Downtown
where nearly 40 students boarded a luxurious party
bus. Students danced from Downtown Phoenix to
Great Skate in Glendale, joining members of BLAST
West for pizza, cake and “great” skating.
Following Great Skate festivities, BLAST‟D members re-
boarded the party bus and continued on to Dave &
Buster‟s at Tempe Marketplace for more fun and
games. The event was a resounding success—students
had an amazing time and said it was the best way to
end the spring semester!

F I G H T H U N G E R In Arizona, 20 percent of children under age 18 ex-
perience hunger at one point in their lifetime. During
the past semester, BLAST‟D partnered with a new
student organization, ASU4Food, as well as St. Mary‟s
Food Bank, to help make a difference.
For a week in February, BLAST‟D sold Valentine‟s Day
candy grams in Taylor Mall, raising more than $143.
The following month, prior to St. Patrick‟s Day celebra-
tions, BLAST‟D held a “Pot O‟ Food” canned food drive
contest among all of the Downtown academic col-
leges—congratulations to the College of Nursing and
Health Innovation for collecting the most items!
BLAST‟D‟s final event this spring with ASU4Food was
in collaboration with Downtown‟s Penny Wars 4
Change. Though competition with the Cronkite School
was close, Barrett came in first place across the en-
tire Downtown campus!
BLAST‟D and ASU4Food efforts helped provide more
than 55,000 meals for the hungry. A sincere thank
you to all of our dedicated volunteers for their sup-
port. For more information about ASU4Food, visit

BLAST'D hosted its first annual "Grub” Crawl in
March to expose students to some of the great din-
ing options Downtown. Best of all, the food was
free!
Students first headed over to Cartel Coffee Lab,
located just a few blocks from campus, where they
sipped espresso shots and learned about the deli-
cate process behind brewing high-quality coffee
from the shop's coffee enthusiasts.
Next, students hopped on the light rail and stopped
off at Hula's Tiki Bar, a groovy tropical bar and res-
taurant. Students enjoyed appetizers while lounging
next to a bonfire pit on Hula's spacious outdoor
patio. The Grub Crawl finished up at Maizie's Café &
Bistro, a bustling urban restaurant in the heart of
downtown. Students feasted on gourmet pizzas and
ended the night with a better appreciation of what
downtown Phoenix has to offer.

The Barrett Downtown Residential College in Taylor Place, or “B-Town,” was
home to nearly 60 freshmen and 10 upper-division honors students during the
2009—2010 academic year.
B-Town‟s Residential College Student Leader, Dustin Volz, and Residential Peer
Mentors, Diana Hernandez, Dan Neligh, Caroline Porter, and Salvador Rodri-
guez helped plan some great events for residents, including:
T-shirt Design Party ● Casino Night ● Relaxation & Massage Day ● Night at
Phoenix First Fridays ● Bowling ● Karaoke & Appetizers ● Field Day & Picnic
AND an end-of-year Pizza Party at the Hotel San Carlos Rooftop Pool.
Students also had the opportunity to participate in several B-Town
service days at St. Vincent De Paul and Hands for the Hungry.
It was a great year!
