Basic Learning Competenciesfor students with MR

The BLC cover the following areas:

1. Language (English and Filipino)

2. Mathematics3. Motor Skills and Physical

Education4. Prevocational Competencies5. Social Competencies

The skills are developmentally sequenced from basic to advanced .

preschool primary intermediate

To identify the level of program of the child there should be a pre-assessment on the present level of functioning of the child.

♣MathematicsGoal:

To help the pupil develop not only computational skills but also skills in solving simple problems in everyday life situations.

The areas to be developed includes:

•Arithmetic processes

•Money

•Time

•Measurement

Guidelines:1. The skills specified in

the BLC are accomplished according to the child’s mental ability.

2. The teacher is encouraged to present the lessons with the use of visual aids using the five senses, taking into consideration the limitations of the pupils.

3. Problem solving Activities be varied and geared to present day-to-day situations in the pupils real life.

4. Practical applications of skills in the school canteen, nearby stores and markets must be given emphasis to let the pupils realize the importance of numeracy skills.

Competencies for Acquiring Computational Skills

Precomputational Skills 1. can discriminate between quantities, shape and sizes. 2. understands one-to-one correspondence. 3. can name symbols for numbers. 4. can name symbols in order from 1-10.

5. can recognize numerals from zero to nine. 6. can write numerals from zero to nine.

Prevocational Competencies

GUIDELINES:1. Teaching BLC to students in the preschool and primary levels involves gross motor competencies, fine motor competencies and work attitudes. In the intermediate level, it uses

GUIDELINES:occupational skills to become independent and self supporting as in training readiness, vocational readiness and work exploration.

GUIDELINES:2. Whenever the pupil find difficulty in performing the skill areas, these may be broken into sub-tasks to facilitate performance.

GUIDELINES:3. Pre-requisite skills need to be developed before proceeding to the next level. Training for mastery of skills is necessary so that varied activities may be devised.

GUIDELINES:4. Values can be incorporated in the performance of a specific skill area in order to give emphasis on the importance of proper work attitudess.

GUIDELINES:5. A means by which work ability can be ascertained are work sample performance tests. Work samples are simulations of tasks or work activity found in certain jobs.
