Pastor’s Corner My Dear Friends, New priest assignments for the Diocese of Raleigh have come out, and our Cape Fear Deanery will be experiencing some changes. You already know that I will be a full-time missionary priest in Honduras beginning June 25th. The parish’s farewell party will be the evening of Friday, June 15th in the St. Mary Cafeteria. All are invited. Fr. Ryszard Kolodziej, originally from Poland, and currently at St. Brendan’s, will be the new pastor and rector of the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary; Fr. Chesco García, originally from Colombia, South America, and currently at St. Catherine of Siena parish in Wake Forest, will be the new parochial vicar of the basilica. I was thrilled to hear who would be coming to St. Mary’s, and I believe you will love the new priests! Msgr. Joseph Ntuwa, originally from Uganda, will be the new Pastor of All Saints parish in Hampstead and its mission in Surf City; Fr. Fernando Meléndez-Castañeda, originally from Peru, South America, and currently parochial vicar at St. Mark’s, will be the Administrator of Transfiguration parish in Wallace and its mission of Santa Clara in Magnolia; Fr. César Torres-Martínez, originally from the Diocese of Netzahualcóyotl, Mexico, will be the parochial vicar of St. Mark parish; And my friend Fr. Mark J. Betti, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, will be the new pastor of St. Brendan the Navigator parish in Shallotte. I think our deanery made out amazingly well, and I am confident that these men will be wonderful leaders! They need your prayers and support, however, to make this happen! Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

Vacation Bible School! Send your kids on an impacting island adventure! At Shipwrecked VBS, kids discover how Jesus rescues us through life’s storms. Shipwrecked is filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences kids see, hear, touch, and even taste! Sciency-Fun Gizmos™, team-building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the

standout activities that help faith ow into real life. (Since everything is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. Be sure to send them in play clothes and safe shoes.) Plus, we’ll help kids discover how to see evi-dence of God in everyday life—something we call God Sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot! Your kids will also participate in a hands-on mission project, through a program called Operation Kid-to-Kid™, that will provide seeds for families in Haiti to grow food. Children who are rising kindergarteners through fifth grade are invited to join us at Sail Away Sendoff each day at the St. Mary school cafeteria for a daily exploration of our Jesus’ rescue! So mark these dates on your calendar: June 18th – 22nd. The fun starts at 9:00 am and will end at noon. A fee of $10 per child is asked for, but nobody is ever denied due to financial reasons. Registration forms may be found on the parish web-site, in the front of the church or at the parish offices. Space is limited, so register early! Please call (910) 762-5491 x114 to speak with John Walsh if you have any questions. Save the Date—Youth Group Pig Roast The Pig Roast is scheduled for Friday, June 29th. The Most Holy Trinity Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – May 26 and May 27, 2018 5

We were blessed to have Sr Isaac here for a (too) short visit; she is my guest columnist this week: We have been celebrating such great feasts this last half of May…the Ascension, Pentecost and this week the Trinity. They all center around the incredible

fact that God wants us to go to all peoples and bring them the message of His unconditional love. The Good News we listen to from Matthew today is that we are called to be disciples reminding our brothers and sisters the God is with us always and asks us to be the hands, the feet, the heart of Jesus right here where we live. Sister Isaac—guest writer: Two weeks ago I spent a few days here at the Ministry and Mary Ann asked me if I would like to write a column for the bulletin. I was honored to have been asked. There is so much kindness and caring that pours out from the Center. Pope Francis recently wrote a letter to us entitled “REJOICE AND BE GLAD”. The subtitle is “On the call to holiness in today’s world.” He writes: “The important thing is that each believer discern his or her own path, that they bring out the very best of themselves, the most personal

gifts that God has placed in their hearts…”(#1) Anyone who walks into the center sees immediately our Volunteers who pour out their love and service, sharing their gifts, being holy and living here and now their bap-tismal commitment. Chapter 3 is one of the most beautiful explanations I have read in recent years of the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5. Con-cern for our brothers and sister, spelled out in the works of mercy to-wards our neighbor, is alive and well at the center. Why not stop by and see this Parish Ministry, your Ministry, in action? I am certain it will touch your spirit. Why not spend some time reading Francis’ letter? You will definitely be nourished on your spiritual jour-ney! (And I even downloaded it on to my IPad – miracle of miracles!) Peace, blessings, prayers, Sr. M. Isaac Special Need of the Week: Now that warmer weather is here, fans.

Please contact me via email at [email protected] if you are interested and what times work best for you. Looking forward to meeting you all. On Tuesday, May 15th the parish received a Tree Preservation Award from the City of Wilmington Tree Commission. The photo of the cer-tificate is above. Unlike the Heritage Tree Award/Designation that we received in 2012 from the commission, this award was based on our landscape renova-tion project of the west side of the Tileston Center; the playground and parking area surrounding the tree. The project was made possible, in part, by funding from the Cape Fear Garden Club. It included a pruning and bracing of The Boundary Oak as well as a deep fertilization of the tree.

Principal

Joyce M. Price "Let your light so shine..."

Matthew 5:16 SS Mary Cruise Gala – On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of St. Mary Catho-lic School, I want to thank Sydney Penny (Pres.), Serena Lau (V.P.) and all of their parent volunteers who spent endless hours planning this wonderful evening of fun, mu-

sic, food, and games - all for the benefit of our students. We are planning to make improvements to our playgrounds with the proceeds of this event. Thank you to all who purchased items in the auction and raffle and certainly all who donated to our school. We are so grateful and will put the proceeds to good use. In addition to these funds, we are also in the process of applying for a grant to supplement the cost of the up-grades. Island Art Night – Thanks to all of the families who came out to enjoy our students’ special artwork last Thursday. We will continue to enjoy some of their work on the walls until the end of school. Lots of pictures have been posted on the school’s Facebook page. Thank you to Ms. Frey and the parent/student volunteers who assisted her in putting the exhibit together. Many thanks also to H.S.A. for providing the refreshments and entertainment. The children who attended enjoyed sharing their work with parents and grandparents. New Priests for Basilica Shrine of St. Mary Fr. Bob will be leaving us after 12 years of service as he is retiring. Of course, his will be an active retirement. He is moving to Honduras as a

missionary priest on June 25th. Fr. Bob has pages and pages of accom-plishments since coming to St. Mary and will leave us being remem-bered as having a kind, open heart for all. Our parish membership has grown greatly during his time here and we wish him the very best in this new adventure. I am pleased to be able to announce the priests’ names who will be as-signed to the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary at the end of June. Our pastor will be Rev. Ryszard Kolodziej and the Parochial Vicar will be Rev. Francisco Javier Garcia Gonzalez. There will also be a 3rd priest in resi-dence on our campus who works at UNC-W. They will be arriving at the end of June. We look forward to giving them a warm St. Mary welcome and having them in our school. Chess Club – The last meeting of the Chess Club was Monday, May 21st. Girls on the Run – The St. Mary School GOTR team participated in running a 5K last Saturday morning. We are very proud of their efforts. We hope to have them run on our Cross Country Team next year. St. Mary Athletics Tony Viollis [email protected] Athletic Booster Board: I am looking for parents who would like to work with me next year on the Athletic Booster Board. We would meet once a month to go over the current season, the upcoming season, and anything we can do to make things spe-cial for our kids. You do not need to be a parent of an athlete to help on the 5 member panel. If you are interested, please get in touch with me. Athletic Booster Banquet: Evites have been sent to parents of our athletes. The date of the event is Thursday, May 31, at 5:30 pm in the Upper Room. All coaches and players are guests of the Athletic Boosters. Parents and siblings will be charged $10.00 each to attend. You can send in your check made out to St. Mary School. Please remember to RSVP when you get your evite so we can make plans accordingly. If you would like to help with the banquet, please go

to the SignUp Genius www.signupgenius.com/go/60b054baaac2ea46-stmary. You don’t have to be a parent of an athlete to help. Feel free to get in touch with me with questions. Feel free to contact me with questions. New Scoreboard: With the money raised from our Golf Outing we would like to purchase a new state-of-the-art scoreboard. However, we are a little short of the final cost. If a family or business would like to make a donation to help us meet our goal, the do-nor’s name or business name will be placed on the bottom plate of the scoreboard. Please let us know if you are interested. Contact Mrs. Price or me. Fall Athletic Teams: We will be having a Coed Cross Country Team (grades 4-8) as well as Girls Tennis and Volleyball (grades 6-8). I asked interest-ed players to sign up with their teachers (with parent email addresses). If your child did not sign up, please let me know so their name can be added to the appro-priate list. All participants will need to submit the 3 required forms.
