Sadie Cowan to Become a

Bat Mitzvah on April 26

Sadie Cowan, a native of Dalton, Georgia,

will celebrate her bat mitzvah at Beth El and

B’nai Zion. Beth El no longer has a

congregation but it holds beautiful

memories.

B’nai Zion congregation is invited to

“bring back the light to Beth El” by joining Sadie and her family in Dalton

for Friday evening services.

Sadie is the daughter of Julie and Rob Cowan and sister of her

awesome brother, Max Cowan. Her grandparents are Roger and Martha

Locke of Tunnel Hill, Georgia; and Jo Ann Cowan of Miami, Florida and

the late Bernarr Cowan of Miami.

Sadie is currently a seventh grade student at Dalton Middle School. She

is a highest honor roll student in the challenge program. Sadie is a seasoned

equestrian, riding hunter/jumper. She also enjoys playing volleyball and

tennis for Dalton Middle.

As an active Girl Scout, Sadie has earned the rank of Cadette and is

currently working on her Silver Award.

Sadie is a voracious reader, who also enjoys concerts, traveling, going to

movies and is looking forward to her 2nd year at Camp Ramah Darom.

Being an active member of the community, she has been awarded the

Rotary Club Service Above Self Award and Principals Award for her

“Change 4 Haiti Project”. Twice nominated by teachers for Kohl’s Kids Who

Care, Sadie also earned her Girl Scout Bronze Award for her volunteer

Service at the Northwest Georgia Library.

As part of becoming a Bat Mitzvah, Sadie has created an

intergenerational program called “Friendship Friday”. This program matches

middle school students with residents in assisted living facilities. The

“friends” gather on Fridays to play games, read books, bird watch, chat, learn

technology, and more. Part of this project will be collecting and purchasing

supplies. Her hope is that “Friendship Friday” will become a community-

wide program providing an opportunity for middle school age students to

connect with a different generation.

The Cowan family is looking forward to sharing this simcha with family

and friends.

Every year even

before Purim

come s , my

thoughts inevit-

ably turn to

Pesach and all

of the prepar-

ations that need

to be done before the Festival of

Freedom. And while I am already well

into my Spring Cleaning, and as a

general rule I do not tend to look so far

into the future, recently I began

pondering the days following Passover

and their connection and connected-

ness.

Let me explain. The last line of

the Haggadah is:

L’shanah ha ba b’yirushalayim—next

year in Jerusalem

As if to say that when we sit down

to celebrate redemption next year may

it be our ultimate redemption

symbolized as Jerusalem as the focal

point of the Messianic Era. This line

points not only towards the 2000 year

old hope, as expressed in the words of

HaTikvah, that one day we will be a

free people in the land of Israel and

Jerusalem, but it also looks at the past

to explain this eternal hope as well as

the present. Jersualem… where would

we be without it? What is it about this

Holy City that as a people we have

yearned for and continued to fight for

it? That our wish for it concludes our

family celebration of the birth of our

people, the New Year in the Torah, and

the pinnacle moment in our peoples’

story?

I will not try to answer this

question here, rather I would like to

turn to the historical realities that

immediately following our weeklong

celebration we commemorate Yom

HaShoah and a week later, Yom

HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzma’ut.

Yom HaShoah itself has a very complex

history as to how it became picked as

the day on which we commemorate the

events of the Holocaust. After all, how

could one date be chosen to remember

all of the atrocities that occurred after a

period of years? The number one

choice of the ghetto fighters and their

allies focused on the Warsaw Ghetto

uprising, but that in itself was

problematic particularly to the

Orthodox community who not only

objected because this conflicts with the

Passover Seders but really wanted to

push the date as far back as possible

from Passover--at the least, into the

next month of Iyar so as not to infringe

on the prohibitions of mourning and

eulogies in the month of Nissan. The

Labor Zionist camp pushed for

Holocaust Commemoration Day to

precede Israel Independence Day,

which occurred on the fifth of Iyar and

thus it was settled that 2 weeks (13

days) from the first seder, we remember

the atrocity and pledge to not let it

happen again.

And that brings me to really the

idea that I have been considering this

year, this season. As we celebrate

Passover this year, again, ending the

seder with a wish for redemption, true

freedom, by saying, “next year in

Jerusalem” are we not to understand

some larger connection between Yom

Ha’atzma’ut and Passover? Three

weeks from the start of the holiday of

freedom and the birth of our nation,

we celebrate Israel’s independence, our

long held dream and the birth of our

nation! My professor in college, Julian

Bond , u s e d t o a lw a y s s a y ,

“Coincidence? I think not!” It just

seems too appropriate and too

coincidental!

Last month I went to Israel on an

Israel Bonds Rabbinic Cabinet

Mission. We met with leaders,

advisors and shakers who are all

working to change the course of Israel’s

history in a positive direction. From

being leaders in water reclamation and

the ingenious process involved, or the

high speed train that will take 28

minutes from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem

including a stop at the airport, to social

service projects that provide fresh fruit,

vegetables and other staples to Israel’s

neediest populations, to secular batei

midrash that provide serious Jewish

learning to those who would probably

never step foot in a traditional yeshiva,

or the ample opportunities to meet with

those who concern themselves with

Israel’s future with the government.

Since 1951 Israel Bonds has helped

make Israel today a reality and helped us

in the Diaspora invest in Israel, partner

with Israel, build a home in Israel. Even

at times, our investment winds up

costing the government of Israel, and yet

overall, Gil Cohen, who works for the

Finance Ministry, maintains that price is

well worth it for the State of Israel

knows that those of us living outside of

Israel are securing its future and our

collective freedom, creating a safety net

from afar and binding us all together as

one woven tapestry from the four

corners of the earth.

Chag sameach to you and your

families! May this year bring us that

much closer to true freedom!

Bonds, for your own investment or for

giving them as gifts, I encourage you to

Message from Our Director of Congregational Learning by Jason Cathcart

Ashrei Society

I remember when I learned the Ashrei as a child. I

was in the 6th grade. Our congregation had just

hired a new rabbi and in order for him to get to

know upcoming B’nai Mitzvah students, he was

teaching Ashrei to my class. We were fascinated by

it’s alphabetic acrostic formula. The rabbi taught

us about the idea from the Talmud (Berachot 4b) that

“Whoever recites T’hillah l’david three times daily is

assured of gaining the world-to-come”. My friends

and I thought that was a cool idea. It gave us a

greater want to learn Ashrei. Our rabbi continued

and taught us about the custom of reading the line

“You open our hand, and satisfy every living being”

while holding your open hand out. To this day, I

continue that custom and think of my rabbi and

teacher of those days in Hebrew School.

On Saturday, April 5 during Shabbat services, we

will have our next induction ceremony for members

of the Ashrei Soceity. We look forward to

welcoming several new members of the club. Each

of the new members had to learn Ashrei using the

provided study materials and lead Ashrei for the

congregation a minimum of three times. I know

you will join us to honor these students on April 5.

Bear with me as I try

to take you on a very

personal journey. It

has always been

exciting to hear how

different people have

different definitions

of the same words. It

all has to do with personal association

and life experiences. Let me set the stage

for my remarks. When asked where I

grew up I usually answer quickly, “in the

tenements of the Bronx!” Whenever

Nada heard me say that she would try to

correct me and say it was in apartments

in the Bronx. To me there was no

difference but to her the word

“tenement” had a less than positive

connotation. “Spring” is another one of

those words. When someone says,

“Spring has sprung”, it conjures up in

my mind the grass coming up between

the cracks in the sidewalk. I had no

vision of lawns as I was growing up. In

fact I don’t remember lawnmowers. Now

that Spring has sprung I also

immediately think Pesach. What

memories to share!

Pesach was, and is, a very

memorable holiday for me. Every year at

this time my mother would arrange for

the “payntners”, or painters to most

people, to come in and paint our

apartment before Pesach. I remember

the difficulty in getting that task

scheduled as most Jewish households in

my neighborhood had the same objective

in mind. Then there was the change in

pots, pans and dishes. All had to happen

before the first day of Pesach. My mother

had, from my kid memory, 35 sets of

dishes stored in a basement of the

apartment building we lived in at the

time. Many of those dishes were

collected at movie theaters that gave

them as an attendance premium. Our

Pesach dishes came in so many varieties

and yet all seemed to flow together.

When something would break

something different would appear. It

never seemed to upset anybody that

color schemes were irrelevant. Next

would be cleaning out of the chometz

which took some time to accomplish.

Now it was time to go shopping to fill

the Pesach pantry.

Oh the pantry! It was exciting to

see the boxes of matzah, matzah meal

and the various and sundry spices,

canned goods and everything with the

label Kosher for Passover on them. It

was an accepted fact that the bottles of

Pepsi were brand new because Pepsi

scheduled new bottles according to the

Jewish calendar which always coincided

with Pesach. I have no idea if that was

true or not but it made for a good story.

Mr. Lippetz, a customer of my dad’s,

produced Pesach wine in the basement

of his apartment building. My dad

counted on him for at least a few

bottles of his delicious product. But

the most memorable things had to do

with the food preparation. My dad

always had to make the “chrain”,

horseradish to those not familiar with

the mamaloschen. Chrain is one of

those words which conjure up

memories and odors never to be

forgotten. We would all have to leave

the apartment because of the gases

emanating from the horseradish roots

as they were being grated. It caused eyes

to tear and noses to run. The odor

stayed for the first two or three days of

pesach. It is an odor I would never

again encounter after I left home. Then

there was my mother going to Tony’s

fish market to get the freshest fish

possible, including live carp, to make

the BEST gefilte fish ever. Nothing in a

jar was available and even if it was I

believe my mother would have thought

it irreligious to use such a thing. Matzah

latkes, matzah bagels, matzah brei, dried

fruit compote and of course matzah

balls are just a few of my “food”

memories. I could probably list a dozen

other Pesadicah meichalls, delights, that

all come back to life as I relive my

growing up. Our seders were attended

by anyone who happened to be in the

Bronx at the time, family, friends and

new acquaintances, all enthusiastically

welcomed. Why bring this all up?

Memories make the world go around

Message from Our President by Irv Ginsburg

and when they are of happy things all

the better. Pesach is a time to create

happy memories.

If you haven’t made reservations

for the B'nai Zion second seder

consider the memories you will pass

on. As an added inducement we will

be using an exciting new Hagadah.

The purchase of the Hagadah was

made possible as the result of an

anonymous $500 contribution and a

$200 one from John Lewis. We want

to thank both of them in a public way.

It is through the generosity of our

congregation that so many things have

been happening at BZ.

Back to last month. The Purim

Megillah was great. The food, drink

and fellowship were the things

memories are made of. Thank you to

Rabbi Susan Tendler and Jason

Cathcart who made the evening

BZ Family

The B'nai Zion family was

saddened at the loss of long-time

member, Alena Stahl, z'l, wife of Paul

Stahl. Alena had two sisters, also of

B'nai Zion, Dorothy Trotz and the late

Mary Prigoff, z'l.

Our deepest condolences also go

out to Alfie Jones and his family on

the death of his father, Frederick

"Radio" Jones, z'l.

Welcome and mazel tov to our

newest members, Kevin and Judy

Spiegel who moved to Chattanooga

recently from Memphis. Also welcome

back and mazel tov to Jeffrey and

Donna Alper. We are delighted to

have all of you as part of our B'nai

Zion family.

John Lewis has been a dedicated

and regular volunteer at B'nai Zion for

the past 2 years. He has done

everything from change lightbulbs,

greet people and organize greeters,

answer the telephone, care for the

building and many other behind-the-

scenes things, never asking for

recognition. We will miss him and

thank him for all he has done and will

continue to do!

Mazel tov to Stefani Johnson,

National Honor Society of Collegiate

Scholars at Virginia Tech.

Mazel tov to Rebecca Dzik and

Micah Hodes, as well as their parents

Michael & Jennifer Dzik, Andy &

Melody Hodes, both of whom were

inducted into the Junior National

Honor Society at East Hamilton! Micah,

additionally, was appointed to the

Congratulations to Eliza Lebovitz

on being elected Ein-Gedi Sub Regional

President. Eliza will be installed into her

new position at USY Regional

Convention in April.

Mazel tov to Danielle Simms on her

Senior Chapel Talk at Girls Preperatory

School on Tuesday, March 11. During

her talk, Danielle shared some word of

wisdom with the entire upper school and

her mentoree for the year, McKenzie

Goff. Danielle plans to attend Brandeis

University in the fall.

In last month's issue, Matthew

Palermo was congratulated on joining

the ranks of other BZ Eagle Scouts. We

were remiss in not including Harold

Deitch, z’l, in the listing of BZ Eagle

Scouts. Prior to his death in January

2009, Harold was honored at a

Cherokee Area Council dinner for being

the oldest living Eagle Scout in this area.

Harold's Eagle project was to

prepare a full multi-course kosher dinner

for his troop. This included purchasing,

preparing and serving the meal to the

troop. Our sincerest apology for this

Selling Hametz for Pesach We are not always able to destroy or rid a house of all Hametz. The rabbis ordained that a symbolic sale is made of all

Hametz to a non-Jew. The Hametz is then “no longer in our possession.” It is customary to make a contribu=on to the

congrega=on for a Passover charity. Rabbi Tendler may be designated as your agent by filling out the authoriza=on forms.

You can cut the form out at the boDom of this page or find the forms at www.bnaizioncongrega=on.com/hametz.

Pesach ends at 8:59 p.m. (Hametz will not be purchased before 9:30 p.m.)

An anonymous gift of many pieces of

kitchen equipment was recently

received in appreciation of Mable

Willingham. The only clues are that

someone was familiar with the kashrut

practices in BZ’s kosher kitchen, and a

handwritten card with the following

message:

Ms. Mable,

Thanks for all you do!

Here is a little something for you.

Thanks,

Anonymous

BZ appreciates you, too, Mable, and

your anonymous friend.
