Batteries are essential to our modern lifestyle. HEV, EV, Mobile phones, Pda’s, MP3 players, digital cameras, laptop computers, etc. make our lives convenient because of instant power supplied by rechargeable batteries. As we continue to enhance our lives with portable devices, battery disposal is becoming an environmental challenge.

Umicore is one of the top market leaders in advanced prod-ucts for rechargeable batteries, derived from Nickel and Cobalt in particular.

We serve our customers with key materials for the three generations of rechargeable batteries (Li-ion, Li-polymer and NiMH).

In this regard Umicore is also able to close the loop: end-of-life Li-ion, Li-polymer and NiMH batteries can be recycled using our Umicore process – technology developed in-house. Facilities are located in Hoboken and Olen, Belgium.

Umicore has more than a hundred years of experience in metallurgy. By combining a unique pyrometallurgical treatment and a state-of-the-art hydro-metallurgical process, we can recycle all kinds of rechargeable batteries found in portable electronic devices (mobile phones, laptops, Pda’s…) and industrial applications (electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles…)

The Umicore pyrometallurgical phase converts the used batteries into a metal alloy, without any potentially hazardous pre-treatment. The gas cleaning tech-nology guarantees that all organic com-

pounds are fully decomposed and that no harmful dioxins or volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) are produced.

In the subsequent hydrometallurgical process, the metals are separated and eventually converted into active cath-ode materials for the production of new rechargeable batteries.

Umicore has developed an innovative recycling techno- logy that allows the treatment of complex materials such as Lithium Ion and Nickel Metal Hydride batteries used in port-able consumer electronics and Hybrid and Electric Vehicles. Also process scrap from the related rechargeable battery industry is recycled. The UHT technology is a key enabler pushing the boundaries for recycling and sets a new standard in Best Available Technology for metallurgical recycling pro-cesses. UHT technology is designed to treat large volumes of different types of metal based complex waste streams. UHT technology allows a higher metal recovery compared to existing processes and generates marketable metal based products. In addition, the UHT technology minimizes the con-sumption of energy and CO2 emissions while maximizing heat recovery to produce energy.
