President’s Report Anita George

I'm running round in circles. I have just come from the opening of our May exhibition in the Station Gallery. It was wonderful to see a variety of works. A Slant on Life seemed a challenge to some, but as artists I think we see life a bit different anyway.

A painting, a hanging sculpture and a mosaic were all winners. It was great to see our groups represented. Congratulations Colleen, Dot and Janet. Workshops next, then our Winter Arts market has gone indoors, into the Fountain room, so please call in for a look as we are there for just four monthly markets.

We have been invited by the West Gippsland Art Centre (WGAC) to display work on the walls for the town's SnowFest. How lovely to be involved, so thinking caps on

everyone. More info on our web page.

On another note many of you will be aware of the result of the February fires on two of our artists. The emotional, and therefore financial, loss of artworks is hard to comprehend as we all put ourselves into our art, no matter what form it takes. Laurel Foenander and Janine Riches will be having an Exhibition in the WGAC and we offer our support to them. The opening is Wednesday 15th May at 5pm. and then open till 17th when we hang our Winter themed exhibition. We wish them all the best.

I hope you take the opportunity to enjoy Come and play - all of May with all our friends. Anita

Friday Fibre Challenge 2019

In 2019 the Friday Fibre group will exhibit on The Wall in October.

As this will coincide with Gardivalia our theme this year will be Floral Emblems and Australian Flora.

The Gallery Manager will provide shelving so that 3D and smaller items will be able to be displayed.

Bbaa Newsletter - www.bawbawartsalliance.org.au Jun/Jul 2019 3

The Bbaa newsletter is coming out earlier this issue so you will still be able to catch some of our May offerings. People’s Choice voting for our ‘Slant on Life’ exhibition will still be open so do call into Yarragon and have a vote for your choice. You will see a great variety of work from our members. A thank you to our members for continuing to support our exhibitions.

We greatly enjoyed our April exhibition featuring the work of Cathy Smith with her ‘Cats on the Internet’. Great to see the Gallery filled with different cats. On The Wall we were able to appreciate the variety of embroidery from Robyn Couch.

May has started as another busy Month in the Gallery. We have our Bbaa members exhibition called ‘A Slant on Life’ and are pleased to once again have some V/Line sponsorship to provide prizes. At the Exhibition Opening at 2pm on Saturday 4 May prize winners were announced. Congratulations to our winners-

First Prize: Colleen Bright ‘Alene’s Blinds Revived’ Second Prize: Dot Thorne ‘Askew View’ Hangers Prize: Janet Wyllie Mosaic

Many thanks to our Judges Joan Bognuda and Ross Jacka and Dot and Ross for the Hangers prize.

CUT INK PRINT: the Linocuts of Helen Timbury

Helen Timbury made her first linocut print when she was 17 and is still creating beautiful images in this medium at 52.

There are three main reasons she has continued making prints all her life; first and foremost is the desire for multiplication. Secondly, she is attracted by the sheer graphic beauty of the craft, and finally she enjoys the strict discipline of printmaking.

Timbury's work can be found in homes all over the world, as well as here in West Gippsland where she lives. Her limited edition handmade prints are known and loved for their simple depictions and gentle humility.

Drawing with the artist: Helen will be working at the Gallery each Friday afternoon throughout the exhibition 1-4pm. She will be working on drawings for a new series of linocut prints. Bring your sketchbook and join her.

Exhibition dates: 26th April - 28 May

Hours: Daily 9-5, free entry

well. I thought I would mention it now to give time for thought and work to be produced.

Start your planning also for our 2019 December/January Groups exhibition which will be based on the theme Under the Sea, a maritime extravaganza of amphoras, octopi, fish, mermaids, boats, coral atolls etc. The exhibition is called ‘Octopuses Garden’.

Please call in to The Station Gallery -Yarragon to see our exhibitions and to view our Gift Shop. It is great to support the work of our local artists.

The Gallery Shop coordinator is now Alene Bonser. Alene can be contacted on 0427402117 or [email protected]. If you are already an artist who displays work with us please ask the volunteer to put your new work on the shop shelf in the office and Alene will attend to it when she is in the gallery. Please ensure that all pieces are clearly labelled with your full name, item number and price on a sticky label or swing tag that can be easily removed to put in our Day Book when item is sold. This really helps our volunteers who can then mark it off your catalogue of work, which you also need to provide, and makes payment to you easier. Thanks for your help with this. If you are a new exhibitor and would like to put some work into the Gallery Shop then please contact Alene to discuss this.

The Station Gallery Trafalgar has the ‘Pop-up Shop That Stayed’ gift shop which is now open Monday-Friday 10.30 – 4 every week and on the first Saturday of the month so do drop in. You will be surprised at the excellent range of work we have for sale from our members. If not open someone in the next door art space will

let you in. A Station Book Nook has been established at both galleries so please feel free to drop in and borrow a book. There are no rules so you may return, keep, or give away. I welcome any books you may wish to donate. At the moment they are mainly adult fiction but the range is expanding. If you would like to put work into the Pop-up Shop That Stayed please contact Marlene or myself but you must be a member.

The Exhibition space and The Wall are fully booked for 2019. ‘The Wall‘ is only for members at a cost of $20 or free if you give an Artist’s talk or demonstration.

Bookings are now being considered for 2020. Please let me know if you have any ideas you would like us to consider.
