Bayou City Art Festival Overview
Overview & Economic Impact Established in 1972, the Art Colony Association (ACA) is a Texas non-profit organization dedicated to producing high quality art festivals and events to provide financial support to local non-profit organizations and FAR (Festival Artist Relief Fund). To date, the ACA has donated over $2.6 million to Houston charities from the proceeds of 70 festivals. The ACA produces the Bayou City Art Festival Downtown and the Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park.
What started in 1971 as a way for retail owners and Montrose-area residents came together to start a community arts and crafts festival to raise money for the beautification of lower Westheimer has blossomed in to two-world renown Art Festivals.
In the spring of 2011, Bayou City Art Festival commemorated its 40th year in Houston with Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park on March 25 – 27, 2011 raising $150,000. Bayou City Art Festival Downtown will complete this celebratory and historic year over the weekend of October 8 – 9, 2011.
The Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park (BCAFMP) and the Bayou City Art Festival Downtown (BCAFD) are two of the top ranking fine art festivals in the country. Both Festivals have ranked in the top 10 Best Art Festivals by American Style Magazine for 3 consecutive years, ranked top 3 in the nation in 2009.
In 2009 the Bayou City Art Festival downtown was named the 3rd best juried Fine Arts festival in the country from the over 800 art festivals in the country. Both festivals have ranked among Sunshine Artists’ Top 50 fine art festivals for 12 consecutive years, with the downtown festival debuting among the national Top Ten Fine Art Festivals in 2009 and Sunshine Artists’ Most Creative Concept 2011 for the Spring 2010 poster. The quality of the visual arts and the astute art buyers are attracting more and more fine artists from all over the United States--from Maine to Hawaii and internationally as far as Europe, Asia and Israel. Many of the artists participating in the BCAFs are represented at numerous galleries, and in the collections of museums, corporations and private collectors.
As a juried fine art event, ACA receives over 2000 artist applications each year. Most recently, 1500 fine artists applied for the 2011 Memorial Park Festival and 1800 for the 2011 Downtown festival vying for the coveted 300 positions per festival. The artist must be present at the festivals and sell their own original and limited prints. No wholesale or artist representatives are allowed. This gives the festival patrons the opportunity to meet and familiarize themselves with the artists and purchase their work directly.
The festival jury panel for artist selection is composed of seven - ten art professionals and/or collectors. Each festival is juried separately. The jury meets twice annually in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston’s American General Meeting Room. The jurors represented a cross section of expertise on media. Each artist presents through Zapplication four original art images and one booth display image.
The ACA and the BCAFMP was the first ever online jury on the new Zapplication.org online application and jury system. Utilizing the latest in high definition image projection and technology the jurors experienced the artist images in detail and definition. Online the categories were scored by the jurors and a cumulated score was tallied. The top 300 scores in the 15 media categories were awarded artist positions in the festival. Media categories include: Clay, Drawing/Pastel, Fiber/Textiles, Furniture, Glass, Jewelry, Leather, Metal, Mixed Media 2d, Mixed Media 3d, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Watercolor.
In being recognized as renowned Fine Art festivals, the both the Memorial and Downtown Festival place Houston in the forefront of the independent artist and bring to Houston some of today’s best fine art from across the country and the world. Art Festival enthusiasts and art collectors come to Houston for this top event. Nationally the festivals have a reputation for being some of the best organized and promoted visual arts festivals and many visitors come to Houston twice a year to enjoy the celebration of art.

Community Involvement
Art Colony Association and Capital One Bank partnered to honor seventeen area nonprofits. Proceeds from the Memorial Park Festival in the amount of $135,000 were presented to the 2011 Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park nonprofit partners in attendance during a reception at Saint Arnolds Brewery. With over 150 people in attendance including board members, staff, nonprofit partners, volunteers and Capital One Bank representatives, the evening was truly a celebration! The award for "Most Outstanding Nonprofit Partner" for the 2011 Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park 2011 actually went to two organizations- Fotofest and MOCAH- each of which received an additional $2,000 donation. While all of the nonprofit partners make a tremendous difference in our community and are instrumental to the festival, Fotofest and MOCAH stood out due to their volunteer recruiting efforts. Both organizations had the highest number of volunteers and showed overall exceptional participation in the volunteer program this year. This year's Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park's nonprofit partners include: Art League Houston, Bering Omega Community Services, City ArtWorks, Downtown YMCA, FotoFest, Houston Center for Photography, Lawndale Art Center, MECA (Multicultural Education & Counseling through the Arts), Memorial Park Conservatory, MFAH (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston,) MOCAH (Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston), Oh! (Opera in the heights,) Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, Several Dancers Core, SNAP (Spay-Neuter Assistance Program) and SPARK. Press Releases Capital One Bank Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park Announces 2011 Featured Artist
HOUSTON, Texas (February 9, 2011) – The Bayou City Art Festival announces mixed-media artist Dolan Geiman as the Featured Artist for the 40th Annual Capital One Bank Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park, which takes place March 25 – 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Dolan Geiman is a nationally recognized mixed media artist creating original paintings, collages, constructions, and limited-edition reproductions. Produced from salvaged wood, found objects, and other recycled materials, Geiman’s eco-friendly artwork emerges from a folk art tradition infused with a contemporary, urban style. Popular and reoccurring motifs in Geiman’s artwork include birds, woodland creatures, music, and Americana, creating an artwork that introduces a modern aesthetic while remaining true to its rustic roots.
Geiman’s long list of accolades and honors includes his recent partnership with Fossil’s Long Live Art campaign. During this collaboration, Geiman partnered with Fossil to create new products, license artwork, design and install window displays, and host in-store marketing events, both in the U.S. and Europe. In addition, his artwork has been featured in publications, including Country Living and boho, as well as in movies, such as It’s Kind of A Funny Story and Nightmare on Elm Street, among others. Geiman’s artwork is currently carried in more than 50 brick and mortar retailers across the country. His artwork can also be seen in restaurants, boutique hotels, resorts and major hoteliers across the country.
Originally from Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, Geiman currently lives and works in Chicago along with wife and business partner Ali Marie Geiman. This will be Geiman’s second time showcasing his work at the Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park in Houston. His work can also be seen at http://dolangeiman.com/.
“One of my favorite things about visiting Houston is all of the southern hospitality I’m greeted with. I was born in the south and each time I visit for a Bayou City Art Festival it’s like experiencing a small piece of home,” Geiman said. “Anytime I can return to my roots it’s like recharging my batteries and I always leave inspired.”
Prior to each Bayou City Art Festival, a judging committee solicits artwork from five potential artists of which one is honored as the featured artist. The featured artist is then asked to produce the festival’s featured artwork, which is used to create a consistent theme across the festival’s billboards, posters, programs and t-shirts.
“The featured artwork for each festival conveys the tone of each event and helps to garner excitement about the upcoming festival,” Art Colony Association Executive Director Kim Stoilis said. “Dolan’s artwork translates well to the public and solicits interest from art aficionados across the spectrum. We are lucky to have him be a part of this historical moment in our festival history.”
Press Releases Capital One Bank Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park Announces 2011 Featured Artist
For the first time, a Bayou City Art Festival will have two pieces of featured artwork. Both of which are inspired by the State of Texas, as well as its’ fauna and wildlife. Geiman’s first creation, titled “Field and Bayou,” features a Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher, a bird commonly found in the Houston area. The piece, created on wood panel with a combination of silkscreen, graphite and acrylic, was inspired by sketches which documented Geiman’s first visit to the bayou country surrounding Houston.
Geiman’s second piece, titled “My Texas Map,” features the State of Texas as a collage on a 48 by 51.5 inch piece of wood and incorporates acrylic and silk screen techniques. The image was constructed by applying small cut-out squares of found paper from vintage newspapers and magazines onto the wood panel. Each small collage square holds a bold color or image that represents small parts of Texas. Whether it’s the flash of a billboard through the windshield at night while driving down a long dustbowl highway or the stampede of a hundred head of cattle through a river gorge, this collage attempts to pull together all that makes Texas great and makes it much more than just a state.
“Being selected to be the featured artist for Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park is an honor, especially since the competition to exhibit at the festival is so fierce,” Geiman said. “Add to that the fact that this year is the 40th anniversary and it’s like getting a hot fudge sundae with two cherries on top!”
