A Message from the Chairman of the Banff
and Buchan College Board of Management
...from the chairman and the principal
It gives me great pleasure to introduce our 2006/07 College Guide. I hope that,
by taking the time to read it, you will gain an insight into life as a student at
Banff & Buchan College.
Above all, the College aims to be accessible to everyone. With this in mind,
our 2006/07 course provision is more varied than ever, with a record volume
of courses available for study via a number of different methods.
Each of our students has unique needs, lifestyles and interests and we aim
to meet these needs by making learning opportunities as flexible as possible.
Organised transport to our main campus is available from many local towns
and villages. Once on-site, students can tap into a number of additional support
services, including a purpose-built nursery offering quality child care.
For those who wish to study within their own communities, we operate a number
of Outreach Centres throughout Aberdeenshire. Open learning and e-learning
provide further flexible means of study for those who need to slot study round
other commitments, or who simply prefer to learn at home.
Whatever your reason for reading this Guide, I hope that it will inspire you
to join us. A warm welcome awaits you.George MacraeChairman of the College Board of Management

advanced entry to university degree programmes. All our provision is covered
by nationally recognised quality assurance systems to ensure that students
benefit from the highest standards of learning.

...answered – questions frequently asked by students
I can’t decide what course to study – what help is available to me?
The College has specially trained Guidance & Counselling staff who can offer,
among other things, advice and assistance on possible courses. Members of staff
from Client Services are also available to give more information on all of our
courses and they will help you contact specialist staff from any of our sectors.
How do I apply for a course?
Telephone our Client Services section who will send you an application form.
Complete this form and return it to the College as soon as possible. Alternatively,
you can complete an application via our website at www.banff-buchan.ac.uk.
Large print application forms and other forms of assistance are available
should you require help. Please ask at Client Services.
What happens after I have applied?
Your application will be acknowledged and passed on to the appropriate member
of staff who will then call or invite you to the College to discuss your application.
Is College only for young people?
The College operates a policy of equal opportunities. People of all ages are
welcome and, in recent years, more people over the age of 25 have been
choosing to attend Banff and Buchan College. Almost 55% of our students
are over 25 years of age.
Can I see around the College?
No problem! The College has an open door policy, which means that you are
free to come in at any time, have a look around, speak to the course tutors and
even the students themselves. All you have to do is telephone the College and
make an appointment.
Do you find that a lot of people are nervous about attending College?
Many students feel intimidated when they are starting a new course with
people they don’t know. Students find that the friendliness of the staff helps
them to settle in very quickly. During induction, the College supplies students
with a student diary that contains lots of useful information to make the first
few days easier.
How will the course I have applied for be taught?
Teaching methods have changed in recent years. Today, much more emphasis
is placed on student-centred learning. This means that you can expect to be much
more involved in your own learning and will encounter teaching methods such
as practical work, individual and group projects, use of the internet, case studies,
discussions, demonstrations, visiting speakers and group outings.
What happens if I have any problemsof any sort while I am studying?
We have a Guidance and Counselling
team in the College who are trained
to help you. Your course tutor will
also be a valuable source of help
and support.
What happens if I find the courseis harder than I expected?
This is a perfectly natural fear. Most
students find, however, that they cope
much better than they thought they
would. No matter what the problem
is, course tutors will be glad to help
and support is available for any student
who may be experiencing difficulties
in specific areas of his or her course.
What about examinations?
You will find that very few courses
have a traditional examination.
Most courses use a method called
continuous assessment, which means
that your progress is marked by your
tutor using a series of smaller
everyday assignments. This also gives
you a chance to monitor your own
progress. Scottish Group Awards may
have an examination as part of the
overall assessment.
What do you provide for disabled students?
It is our policy to make access as
easy as possible for disabled students.
The College has a ramp at the main
entrance with automatic doors. Toilet
facilities for disabled use are also
located throughout the College. If you
require any additional support, please
indicate this on your application form
or contact our Guidance & Counselling
section to discuss your requirements.

places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Funding may be available towards the cost of this childcare facility.
If the College nurseries are full and you still require childcare, or if you require
before and after school care, an application should be made via the Childcare
Co-ordinator, Teresa McCallion (tel: 01346 586100). Again, funding may be
available towards the cost of this childcare provided it is with a registered
provider.
Students’ Association
The Students’ Association is run by students in conjunction with the Guidance
staff for the benefit of all students. It helps identify and put in place any
modifications for improving student facilities within the College. Limited funds
may also be available for educational and industrial visits. All full time students
will have an elected class representative who will attend the association
meetings. The President of the Students’ Association will also be the student
representative on the College Board of Management. For further information,

...what do the different qualifications actually mean?
Banff and Buchan College offers a wide variety
of courses at different levels. The following gives
you a brief explanation for your guidance. The courses
at the College are designed to give you the opportunity
to achieve your full potential by building up your
qualifications step by step.
National Certificate Qualifications (NQ)
National Certificate qualifications are based on a combination of SQA
(Scottish Qualification Authority) units. On average, it takes about 40 hours
to complete a single unit. Units are offered as single units or combined with
others to complete a National Certificate Award. There are over 3,000 of these,
covering most occupational areas. Instead of having formal examinations, these
units are based on continuous assessment. Completion of such a programme
will certainly enhance employment prospects. This type of programme will
also enable the student to progress on to an HNC/HND programme.
Higher National Certificate (HNC)
A widely-respected qualification built up from a specific group of units. These can
be taken over a period of time to fit in with your specific needs. Most are offered
as full time courses, which take about a year to complete but increasing numbers
are being offered on a part-time, evening class and distance learning basis.
Higher National units are individual units of study which have a credit value
assigned to them. For an HNC programme, students are normally required to
successfully complete a minimum of 12 credits. Higher National Units are also
continually assessed throughout the programme with no final examination at
the end. Students who have completed their HNC award can continue studying
to achieve an HND award.
Higher National Diploma (HND)
This is an advanced course and will take about two years of full time study to
complete (or one year if you already have a similar HNC). It is a very demanding
programme but can offer substantial career opportunities. For an HND
programme, a minimum of 30 credits is normally required.
Possession of the above Higher National awards can allow direct entry into
the second or third year of selected University degree courses.
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ)
Scottish Vocational Qualifications are nationally recognised qualifications that
are designed to meet standards set by employers. The SVQ offers the employer
a guarantee that the student has the ability to complete job-related tasks.
Students are assessed in the work place or in some of the realistic work place
environments within the College. This qualification is suitable for people who
are currently in employment as well as students at the College. SVQs are
recognised throughout Europe.
Scottish Group Awards (SGA)
SGAs are part of the Higher Still
programme. These are coherent
programmes of units, courses and
external assessments and are available
at a number of levels. Candidates can
get credit towards an SGA programme
from previous qualifications.
Scottish Wider Access Programme(SWAPNorth)
Scottish Wider Access Programme
courses are designed to provide mature
students with appropriate entry
qualifications to Higher Education on
successful completion of their course.
At present, Art, Arts & Social Sciences,
Nursing, Construction and Surveying
and Engineering are available at Banff
and Buchan College. No formal entry
requirements are necessary. For more
information, please refer to the
relevant sector guide or contact Client
Services on 01346 586100.
Entry Requirements
The sector guides contain information
on entry qualifications for each
programme. However, these may only
be guidelines and we would encourage
anyone who is interested in higher
education programmes to contact the
College to discuss entry requirements,
as relevant experience will also be
taken into account.
Scottish Vocational Qualifications arenationally recognised qualificationsthat are designed to meet standardsset by employers.

The amount that you are awarded will depend on your circumstances.

Education Maintenance Allowances
From August 2004, Educational Maintenance Allowances (EMAs) have been

encouraging retention and attainment against goals set out in individual learning
agreements.
EMAs in academic year 2006/2007 will be available for 16 and 17 and 18 year
olds following full time courses. By academic year 2007/2008, EMA’s will be
available for 16 to 19 year olds.
EMAs offer eligible young people a means tested weekly allowance of £30, £20
or £10 dependent on household income. In addition, all eligible young people will
be eligible for two bonuses of £150 each. The bonuses can be earned through

Additional Financial Assistance

This information is correct at the time of printing. Updated information will
be issued by the Student Funding Section if any changes arise.
Individual Learning Accounts (ILA Scotland)

progression opportunities
At Banff and Buchan College you will find many opportunities to progress,
whether it be from one level of course to another or from one stage of study
to the next. It is also possible to engage in learning through enrolment across
the wide variety of subject or interest areas that are offered by the College
according to your own individual choice.
In many cases, as the diagram below shows, you can embark on an upward
progression route in the vocational area of your choice from Standard grades
achieved at school or through Scottish Qualifications Authority qualifications at
Access, Intermediate, Higher and Advanced Higher level. You can also progress
through the Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs at Levels 1-5) work based
route if you are in work or undertaking a College vocational training course.
You may choose, and have sufficient entry qualifications and/or experience,
to enrol directly on to our Higher National Certificate and Diploma courses or
specific university access courses (SWAPNorth programmes) with recognised
university articulation links. These progression routes and qualifications are
frequently interchangeable and can ultimately lead to higher education and
training.
All progression does not necessarily need to lead in a progressively upward
manner however, and there are many opportunities to pursue a varied range of
interests and leisure activities through our diverse range of short recreational
and interest programmes.

notes on the framework
SCQF Credit PointsThe SCQF credit points shown represent the minimum number of SCQF
credit points gained when each qualification is successfully completed.
For a detailed description of each qualification within the SCQF please
refer to The Association of Scottish Colleges publication A Guide for
Colleges on Qualifications included in the SCQF.
SVQsThe positioning of SVQs in the table gives a broad indication of their place
in the framework. Like most group awards, SVQs are likely to be made
up of Units at a number of levels. A project to refine the position of the
SVQs in the framework is currently ongoing. Its recommendations have
been considered and further work is now in hand. At present no SCQF
points are allocated to any SVQ but allocation will be phased in once
the methodology is agreed.
Scottish Group AwardsScottish Group Awards are included in the SCQF but not shown in the
diagram opposite. Levels and SCQF Credit points for each SGA is listed
below and further detail is available in The Association of Scottish
Colleges’ publication A Guide for Colleges on Qualifications included
in the SCQF. Scottish Group Awards are currently under review.

HNCsFrom 2003 new design principles have been introduced which will
require newly validated HNCs to be allocated 96 SCQF Credit points.
HNCs designed previous to this are allocated 120 points.
Graduate Diploma/CertificateThese qualifications are differentiated by volume of outcomes and may
be offered at either level.
Coming SoonVarious SQA qualifications, eg, Professional Development Awards (PDAs)
and Scottish Progression Awards (SPAs) are under review and do not appear
in this table. SQA are currently reviewing their portfolio and this will result
in additions to the framework to be added in 2005/2006. Discussions are
also in progress with professional bodies with a view to including their
qualifications and with other bodies offering qualifications in Scotland.
Work is underway on developing guidelines to extend the framework to
describe and recognise all learning, including that which is not already
part of any formal qualifications system, providing it has been, or can be,
subject to valid, reliable and quality assured assessment.

...with other universities
Many of our students who are following Higher National Certificate and Diploma
programmes wish to continue their studies and follow degree courses at
University. Banff and Buchan College can help you to achieve these ambitions
through our articulation agreement links with Universities.
The content and depth of study in the majority of our HNC/HND programmes
are equivalent to first and second year university degree courses. As a result,
students who successfully complete their HNC or HND at the College, can
generally articulate into the appropriate year of their degree course. This
method of progression and articulation has great benefits for students,
particularly mature students, as it cuts down on travelling and accommodation
costs. We also have a Careers Adviser on hand to help you complete the
standard University entrance application form.
The College has, over the years, built up excellent relationships with a number
of universities. We now have various articulation agreements in place so that
it will be clear to you from the outset exactly what you need to achieve to gain
entry to the university of your choice and which year of the appropriate degree
course you can progress to. Listed below are a few of the universities with
which we have established close links:
• University of Aberdeen
• Robert Gordon University
• University of the Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute
• Stirling University
• University of Abertay
• Napier University
• Dundee University
• Scottish Agricultural College
Whatever your choice of university or degree programme, we will be happy
to negotiate entrance on your behalf anywhere in the United Kingdom.
Application to any UK university must be made via a central organisation called
UCAS. These applications should be made online. Information will be available
regarding this process and workshops will take place early in the session. For
further information, contact Teresa McCallion on 01346 586166.
Banff and Buchan College is also a member of the Scottish Wider Access
Programme (SWAP) North organisation which provides recognised entry
qualifications for students undertaking SWAP Access programmes to any
university in Scotland. These programmes are designed to allow students
following recognised non advanced college courses entry to the 1st year of
a specific degree programme. All our SWAP Access courses are identified
within the sector guides.
Finally, any student who is following a Higher National programme of study
by the open learning route can progress to degree level through the Open
University. This means that you can study from home in your own time and at
your own pace; this has clear advantages for those who are unable, through
work or other reasons, to physically attend a university.
To find out more about articulation to any university degree course, contact
our Client Services Section.

Commitment
Banff and Buchan College is committed to equality of opportunity and access
for all. The College has a number of policies which ensure that effective
measures are in place to tackle discrimination and to actively promote equality
of opportunity and good relationships with all. These policies apply to both
students and staff. Everyone is welcomed and every reasonable measure
is taken to meet individual requirements.
Access for all
If you have any specific requirements or needs which you would like to talk to
us about before applying for a particular course, you can contact a member of
the Guidance and Counselling team. Together, you can discuss your particular
need to find the best way forward. Alternatively, there is an opportunity on the
College application form to specify your particular need. Early identification
of your need will greatly assist us to tailor our course delivery, and therefore
ensure that you gain maximum benefit and satisfaction during your time at
the College. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you require an application
form in large print.
Breaking down the barriers
The College has taken a number of actions to improve access to learning.
Included among these are a range of measures to ensure that disabled
students have access to the same levels of student support services as their
non disabled peers. A College booklet is available that outlines the support
measures in place for students with disabilities.
We also wish to address any other barriers you feel may make it difficult
for you to come to the College and we would therefore encourage you to bring
any perceived barriers to our attention.
Responsibilities
All members of staff and students have a role to play in ensuring that equality
of access and opportunity is afforded to everybody and that discrimination
is not tolerated.
Monitoring
We regularly monitor progress in the implementation of these policies and
consult with students, staff and representative bodies leading to the production
of an annual report with identified actions to be taken where necessary.
Complaints
Anyone who feels they have been discriminated against can have their complaint
addressed through the procedures outlined in the students diary.
Equal Opportunities Statement
Banff and Buchan College provides
education training and consultancy to
a range of clients throughout North
East Scotland and, in some specialist
areas, internationally. We are
committed to equality of opportunity
for all prospective and current staff
and students.
The college recognises that certain
social and cultural influences can
lead to groups or individuals being
disadvantaged for reasons relating
to age, gender, status, race, disability,
sexual orientation, religious or political
beliefs. We therefore constantly
review our culture core values, policies
and procedures to ensure that these
promote behaviours and attitudes
which combat discrimination.
It is the responsibility of College
managers to ensure that these policies
and procedures are both understood
and complied with by all staff and
