it may be the perfect opportunity to explore a workshop, youth art camps, or an interesting exhibit.

The art center never goes on summer break!

The 38th annual Michigan Fine Arts Competition opens June 21 and as always will be a must-see

exhibition to get a glimpse of current art from artists in five states. For another creative experience, don’t

miss this year’s Fine Art of Summer — an art soiree to kick off the season while supporting the BBAC.

On behalf of everyone who is part of the BBAC community, thanks SO MUCH to all of you who contributed

to our spring fundraising campaign. We gratefully rely on those who appreciate this art center to help

continue making it a better place.

So put on those flip-flops, breath in the summer air, and explore all that we have to offer this summer

season.

Expressive Watercolor offers a unique elegant energy; the contrast of pure color on white paper, the flow of paint and brush stroke, and the sense of the artist’s hand in the artwork. The focus of this class will be to understand how to interpret your subject matter and develop the skill to direct this energy into an impressive painting. Drawing the Figure & Portrait3-Day Workshop w/ Henry YanStudents will learn how to improve their skills in drawing the human figure/head with accurate proportions, anatomy, and rendering value, shapes and details and styles. VISITING ARTIST WORKSHOP VISITING ARTIST WORKSHOP

above: Armin Mersmann, Lace, graphite

As a full-time instructor, Henry Yan has been teaching more than twenty years at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, giving classes on figure and portrait drawing and oil painting. His work is characterized by attention to anatomical detail and powerful gesture.

Henry Yan’s book, Figure Drawing—Techniques and Tips, has been widely used by art students and professional artists in the U.S. and internationally. A large number of his works have been collected around the world, and he’s been widely invited to teach workshops in USA, Canada, and Europe.

Workshops Listed in Date Order

Drawing: Bootcamp 25-Day Workshop w/ Armin MersmannJoin renowned artist, Armin Mersmann, and im-merse yourself into an advanced one, week-long study of drawing and the art of observation. We all see the world around us, but do we really look, take in the forms, shapes and structures as an artist does? Just relying on our memory alone does not suffice. Light, shadow and details are hard enough to replicate when they are right there in front of you.If you have to invent them or try to go from memory, they appear even less convincing.

Drawing Boot Camp 2 adds to the experience of Drawing Boot Camp 1: We will revisit couture drawing — this is a key skill in drawing, as drawing is a key skill for painting. We will spend two days on portraiture, along with perspective, advanced shading techniques, sight-ing techniques and understanding your personal artistic language. Every lesson in this class will be augmented by demos from Armin, along with PowerPoint ® presentations and handouts.

It is not a prerequisite to have taken Boot Camp 1, but you need to have acquired good drawing skills from other classes.

This class is for novice and intermediate drawers. This class might be too intense for pure beginners, but feel free to call Armin if you have questions regarding prerequisite skills or questions on the content of the class at 989-430-5534.

Painting: Dramatic Light & Luminosity in Watercolor3-Day Workshop w/ Paul JacksonWatercolor is the ideal medium for interpreting and expressing the complex subtleties of light. Its transparency makes it uniquely suited to convey luminous surfaces and veils of atmosphere. With it you can create pale washes as well as dark, powerful and moody images. It is a lovely and fluid language in which to express any idea or image.

Paul’s focus for this workshop will be to guide you through a painting from beginning to end, as you paint together a stunning image of dramatic light and luminosity. You may choose to follow along and work on the same image, or find another subject entirely. Paul will happily work with you through whatever subject you choose.

We will send out the reference image(s) students can use approximately one week before the class begins.

The BBAC invites everyone to explore art—in their own time & in their own way—& offers many paths to take…including some alternative & different approaches.

The sky’s the limit!

ArtBridgeSince 2006, this program has provided intensive art instruction & mentoring in preparation for college entry to talented, motivated high school art students from underserved areas.

Each teen spends one to three years at the BBAC completing core curriculum & elective art classes, interning with an artist or instructor & completing a digital portfolio for college applications. Many serve on the BBAC Teen Arts Board and work as counselors at our summer youth art camps.

The program is free for participants, who are initially recommended by their teachers or principals. While ArtBridge receives intermittent support from foundations, the BBAC has remained committed to main-taining this important program with or without outside funding.

ArtBridge in DetroitIn 2016, the BBAC adopted a Detroit middle school that had to cut art programming in 2010. We provide a weekly curriculum with an instructor and materials plus an after school program—all at no charge.

Studio 1®

This is both the name of a BBAC studio classroom & a philosophical approach to “art for all.”

The BBAC & community partners— regional human service agencies—work together to provide art instruction for groups of individuals with a range of cognitive, physical & emotional challenges.

Studio 1® partners have included FAR, Oakland County Children’s Village, Angels’ Place & Friendship Club.

Studio 1® was started in 2008 when the vision of “art for all” was just emerging, & remains a driving force behind our ArtAccess offerings.

Meet Me @ the BBACNo prior art experience is needed for these art-looking & art-making experiences for individuals with early & mid-stage Alzheimer’s or dementia.

The program is open to groups from human service agencies throughout the region. The BBAC also offers sessions for individuals still living at home.

During a typical session, a group will spend about a half-hour looking at & talking about art from a current BBAC exhibit. The group then moves to a fully-equipped art studio to create something based on the art they have just seen. Each person leaves with their completed project.

Participation fees are nominal.

The Art of Caregiving®

While programs for individuals with Alzheimer’s & dementia continue to gain attention, the needs & interests of caregivers are often overlooked.

This program—FREE OF CHARGE—is geared toward providing the caregiver with an art outlet that gives creative relief from the daily routine. Sessions include networking, informal discussion & different art projects. No experience is needed.

Also provided: a take-home kit with supplies & materials reflecting the art session just completed. Caregivers can choose to share this with the person they care for or use it themselves.

Art of Caregiving® sessions are scheduled every other Thursday through the beginning of June. Participants may choose a morning or early evening time. (Advance registration is required.)

Planet Lori Art CampLori Haber Buckfire loved children & spent many afternoons doing art projects with her son Hayden. She passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010 when Hayden was five years old. Lori’s memory is being honored with an art camp in her name specifically designed for children who had or have a parent or a close relative with cancer. Each summer for one week the BBAC hosts Planet Lori Art Camp for 50+ children, funded by the Lori Haber Buckfire Foundation so there is no cost to the campers. See page 37 for more information.

Once a month there are drop-in workshops designed as convenient, inexpensive opportunities to be creative & learn something new. Enjoy different, authentic art projects each month with all materials provided.

Seniors @ the Center: We are taking a summer break— programs will start up again in the fall.

ACCESS:• a means of approaching or entering a place • the right or opportunity to use or benefit from something

ArtAccess @ the BBAC is an essential component of meeting our mission to provide high quality, relevant services to the community and region, regardless of geographic, physical, cognitive or emotional “boundaries”...

• individuals with mental and/or physical challenges • young, talented students from underserved communities • older adults with dementia • those who care for the elderly • busy people who benefit from an “art break”

Everyone is welcome. The BBAC’s vision statement is “art for all” & we have been celebrating that for 60 years.
