MENTORS PLAY A BIG ROLE IN MOTIVATING THEIR LITTLES With the school year coming to a close, we want to encourage our Littles to finish strong! Below is an excerpt offering some tips to help your Little achieve academic success! Mentors to young people often play a role in motivating students to do their best in school. Mentoring can improve mentees' attitudes toward school achievement and bolster their belief in their academic ability, according to youth development experts Gail Manza and Susan K. Patrick. Manza and Patrick, authors of The Mentor's Field Guide: Answers You Need to Help Kids Succeed, write, "Your belief in your mentees and your encouragement can help them to be more willing to make the effort to do well." Mentoring can also increase mentees' aspiration for their future, and when they have goals they would like to achieve, they are more likely to appreciate the role education plays in attaining them. The following tips, offered by Manza and Patrick, can help mentees see that working hard in school has many benefits:

Be specific when talking about school success: turn in assign-ments on time, actively participate in class, ask for help when needed.

Ask what books your mentee is reading; you may have read some of the same books when you were young.

Help your mentee engage in problem solving about issues that arise at school.

Provide specific help with schoolwork, making sure that you stay in the role as "guide," not "doer."

If your mentee claims to not care about school, find out why. Does she believe she isn't smart enough to do well? Does he think he can't afford college?

Keep in mind that academic-related encouragement should not

come at the expense of the relationship you are striving to develop with a mentee. Deciding how to help your mentee academically and how involved to get will depend on the wishes of parents, suggestions from teachers, and direction from your mentoring program. Saturday, April 18th from 1-3:30pm Get creative with us at Davenport Junior Theatre! You’ll see behind-the-scenes action of a performance including the lights, scenery, makeup, and acting. Plus, DJT will provide each match with a ticket to their upcoming performance of Rumpelstiltskin. You won’t want to miss this!

Davenport Junior Theatre (2822 Eastern Avenue, Davenport, IA 52803)

Little Sister, Clever completed the Job-Readiness Program last year and is participating in the Youth Corps Program through the City of Davenport this summer. BBBS staff member, Bre and her friend Chris went to dinner at Huckleberry’s in Rock Island and Clever was their waitress! When Clever first saw that it was Bre she gave her a big hug and said “who is this?” to Chris. Bre thought that was pretty funny. Clever was so sweet and so excited to be serving someone she knew. She did a great job and even introduced Bre and Chris to her boss at the end of their visit. It was obvious Clever was very proud to be a part of our Job Readiness program. It turns out that Clever’s boss was a Big at one time and was talking about how great the program was and what an impact all of those who work at BBBS are making on community youth.

CRAFT ACTIVITY: BUNNY BOOKMARK!CRAFT ACTIVITY: BUNNY BOOKMARK! Here is a cute craft that will take you minutes to make and you probably already have all the supplies! You will need:

An envelope Black marker

Scissors Tape/glue

Googly eyes (or you can draw the eyes on) Pink paper scraps (or pink marker)

Begin by cutting the corner off of your envelope. You want to use one of the bottom corners, so it is sealed on both sides. Cut to the middle, and leave a small rectangle, then cut off the other side. This will be the bunny’s teeth so don’t cut them off! Once your envelope is cut, you can cut off the back flap of the teeth section.

Now, also using your envelope cut out some ears. I used the edge of the envelope so that I had two layers for added stability. Tape these on to the back of the book mark. Go ahead and tape on the eyes as well, or color your own eyes onto the envelope. Taking a small scrap of pink paper, or using the envelope and coloring it pink, cut a small diamond for the nose and 2 small ear sections. Make them smaller than the white ears. Tape them on. Finish off by using your black marker to make a line down the middle of the teeth, and adding whiskers. There you go! (www.athriftymom.com)

100 Days/100 Bigs Kicks off at BNO on April 22!

Last year we introduced a new concept in volunteer recruitment, 100 DAYS / 100 BIGS! It was very successful for us, so we are planning to do it again! April 22nd will officially kick off the start of 100 Days / 100 Bigs. Any Big is welcome to participate in this volunteer recruitment campaign. Between April 23 and August 1, 2015, any Big is encouraged to recruit a new mentor volunteer. The top ten volunteer BIG recruiters will win a $250 VISA gift card to take their Little back to school shopping or to go on an exciting outing together. Just think, if every Big recruited one new volunteer a year, few children would have to wait to be matched. 100 Days / 100 Bigs is sponsored this year by Wieblers Harley-Davidson. Wieblers is planning to announce the 100 Days/100 Bigs campaign at their spring open house on Saturday, April 25th, at 5320 Corporate Park Drive, just behind the Big Ten Mart on 53rd. COACHES CORNER

To inquire about becoming a Big in Macomb

call Pete at 309-837-5437

V O L U M E 7 , I S S U E 4 A P R I L , 2 0 1 5

OK, maybe not a million, but we have made many matches since the last issue of Coaches Corner. The work we do is reward enough, but being there for that first meeting between Big and Little is really what makes this job wonderful. The Littles are percolating with excitement, but trying to contain themselves; the Bigs are nervous, in a good way, wanting to get off on the right foot. BBBS then bores everyone to death with the paperwork, which gives Big and Little time to size each other up with sideways glances. By the time BBBS is done yammering on, Big and Little have gotten over being shy or awkward and are ready to become friends. And that’s the moment when the magic of one-to-one mentoring begins. NEW MATCHES At the beginning of every semester there is a rush of WIU students interested in School-based matches. This year, the end of February/beginning of March was a FLURRY of great new matches! Our spring 2015 crop of School-based volunteers are really incredible people, and the kids are just as special. We made 6 new School-based matches in March, and we are very proud to introduce all!

SAVE THE DATE The 2015 BBBS Plant Sale in Macomb will be Wednesday, May 6 to Sunday, May 10. We’ll be in the usual place, on Jackson next to Quick Print, from 8AM-7PM Wed-Sat and from 10AM-3PM on Sunday (if necessary). We will have the same wide selection of beautiful, healthy flowers and hanging baskets that our supporters in Warren and McDonough Counties have come to expect from us. Come on out to get gifts for mom, spouse, or sibling, but don’t put it off until Sunday; those magnificent multi-color baskets sold out in less than 2 days last year, and we expect the same mad rush for them this year. In fact, if you want to be certain to get the baskets you want, consider pre-ordering by going to www.bbbsmv.org and click on Plant Sale, or download an order form and send it in with a check. We will hold your plants out and you can pick them up any time during the sale. Or, if you order more than $150 we will deliver the plants right to your door.

Either way, we’re excited to see all the smiling faces of our supporters, ready for spring, that most hopeful time of the year. When you do come to the sale, don’t be in a rush; BBBS loves talking to the people who make it possible for us to help so many children. Bring your family, a lawn-chair, your BBQ, stay a while, talk, we’ll throw the baseball with you, bend your ear, we can discuss all the extraordinary volunteers BBBS has in Warren and McDonough Counties, meet the Master Gardeners and have your questions answered by the Gurus of the Green Thumbs, definitely bring your dogs (BBBS loves dogs). Plant Sale is great fun, for the greatest of causes, kids.

Featured Match of the Month Who: John and Trence! How long have they been matched: They have been matched for 3 years. What do they enjoy doing together? They enjoy attending basketball games, hanging out at the mall, watching movies, and cooking meals together. John and

Trence were also the big winners at our Christmas Match Activity; scoring the highest at bowling and winning a large pizza from Pizza Hut to share! Why did Big Brothers Big Sisters choose to feature them for match of the month? We choose John and Trence because both work hard to maintain a positive mentoring relationship; they communicate regularly, try new activities, and genuinely enjoy each other’s company!

MONEY-WISE KIDS: MONEY DOESN’T GROW ON TREES By IHMVCU staff What do you mean money doesn’t grow on trees?! Yep, that’s right, no matter how much we wish it did, it doesn’t. So, how do you get the money you need for a new video game or the bag of chips that look so tempting? Here are a couple different ways to earn money. You can get a job. This means you’d have a job/career that you’d get paid a certain amount of money for each hour you work (a wage), or a set amount of money (a salary) no matter how many hours you work. You can be an entrepreneur. You can use your special talents to start your own business. When you are an entrepreneur, you are your own boss and have to make lots of important decisions, and you may not earn the same amount of money each week. There are lots of different types of entrepreneurs, from dog walkers to people who open up a candy store.

You can earn an allowance. You can earn an allowance by doing chores around the house. This could be making your bed, vacuuming, doing the dishes. The list is endless when it comes to helping around the house.

The amount of money you earn will depend on things such as your household financial situation and how much money your parents think you can manage, but a general guideline is to give 50 cents to $1.00 for each year of age.

Earning money not only gives you the ability to buy what

you need but you will also come away with

a sense of accomplishment. It shows you that

hard work and dedication pays off.

DEAR MATCH COACH: FRIENDS ON OUTINGS Dear Match Coach, My Little always wants to invite a friend on our outings. Is this ok to do?

Dear Big, Big Brothers Big Sisters would like most of your time with your Little to be one on one. We do understand there are people that are important to your Little that they would like you to meet, just as I’m sure you have people you would like to introduce your Little to as well. As long as your Little talks to you about the additional person beforehand and you are comfortable with that person being at your activity then go for it. However, please keep in mind that the additional child would not be covered in

the liability insurance that protects you and your Little as a match. Additionally, please remember that BBBS would like 75% of your interactions to remain one on one. If you feel like your Little is inviting friends to everything you do together talk to them about it. I would discuss with them that the importance of your time together and that they can invite a friend next time. Hope this helps! Sincerely,

Your Match Coach
