Integration of Princely States Two categories of political units British provinces (under the direct rule of British government) and Princely states (under rule of native princes but subject to the paramountcy of British

Crown). Indian Independence Act (1947)- Two independent and separate dominions of India and

Pakistan Three options-> Princely States-> 1)-Joining India, 2)-Joining Pakistan or 3)-Remaining independent. Of the 552 princely states situated within the geographical boundaries of India, 549 joined

India and the remaining 3 (Hyderabad, Junagarh and Kashmir) refused to join India. Later -> They were also integrated with India—> 1)- Hyderabad by means of police action, 2)- Junagarh by means of referendum and 3)- Kashmir by the Instrument of Accession.

1950-> Constitution contained a four-fold classification of states of Indian Union

Part A , Part B, Part C and Part D State- Today->Numbered 29. Part-A states-> nine(9) erstwhile(भूतपूर्व) governor’s provinces of British India. Part-B states -> nine(9) erstwhile(भूतपूर्व) princely states with legislatures. Part-C states -> chief commissioner’s provinces of British India and some of

the erstwhile princely states-> (In all 10 in number) were centrally administered.
