Poplar Hill Mansion is Salisbury’s oldest home, having survived two great fires that wiped out most of the buildings in nearby Salisbury. The lot on which Poplar Hill sits was bought in 1795 by Major Levin Handy; the land was carved out of the lot known as “Pemberton’s Good Will” and was located at the edge of Salisbury in what was then Worcester County. The lot was 357 acres and Handy began to build a two story frame dwelling on an elevated brick foundation, but he died before the house was completed. In 1805 the lot and house were bought by Dr. John Huston for 1,000 pounds. The Huston family greatly influenced the area surrounding the mansion. Isabella, Elizabeth and William streets were named after the children of Dr. Huston. He also tried to start the first hospital in Salisbury but was unable to raise enough money. Dr. Huston owned the property from 1805 until his death in 1827. After his death his wife Sarah owned the house until the mid-nineteenth century.

In 1867 Wicomico County was created, carved from portions of Worcester and Somerset Counties. Over the years, portions of the original Handy / Huston property were sold, houses were built and the thriving residential area became known as “Newtown”.

George Waller and his family next owned the mansion from 1882 until 1945. Later, Fred P. Adkins bought the house and attempted to turn it into a masonic lodge. When this did not work out, he sold the property to Ward and Dorothy Garber, who ran an antique shop downstairs and lived upstairs. They sold the mansion to Wicomico County in 1970, and since 1974 the mansion has been owned by the City of Salisbury.

Poplar Hill Mansion is a four and a half story building which was built in the Federal style. This style of architecture is purely American, and emerged immediately after the American Revolution. The house is inspired by Greek and Roman architecture with the archway in the main hall and Palladian windows. Poplar Hill is symmetrical on the outside and on the inside.

The main hall is in the middle, with two rooms on either side, and in each room there is a fireplace and two doors on either side of it. There is a full basement, and the half story is found in the attic, where there is a loft. The loft was most likely where the seventeen slaves of the Huston family lived and slept. There were many outbuildings formerly at the mansion, such as an outdoor kitchen and stables, which no longer exist. The smokehouse, dating to the 1850s is the only original outbuilding to the mansion that still remains.

The mansion is open to free tours on the first and third Sundays of the month, and also by appointment. Private events such as weddings, birthday parties and family reunions are held at the mansion along with public events such as teas and historical celebrations. The Friends of Poplar Hill Mansion are responsible for the restoration projects that have taken place at the mansion. Recently, the first floor was restored to the original paint colors and there are also plans to restore the smokehouse and a pianoforte that is located in the main hall.

The next event at Poplar Hill is “Spruce up for spring” on Saturday March 16th from 1-5. This is a day to support local home businesses and artists. There will be photo art by Rita Tiso, Mary Kay products, Pampered Chef, Golda’s candy, 3 Sisters crocheted rugs, scarves, bags and more. Their next luncheon and fashion show will be April 11th at 11:30. The fee is $20.00 per person. That dream is about to come true for hundreds of community members on the Eastern Shore through Maryland’s Eastern Shore Mission of Mercy clinic. MOM is a two-day free dental clinic being organized by members of the Eastern Shore Dental Society and other local volunteers for the weekend of March 13-17, 2013 at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. Actual days of the

event are Friday & Saturday, March 15 & 16. (Please note: no children are permitted on site. Please get a babysitter).

Artist Mark Priest has spent more than a decade tracing the routes of the Underground Railroad and researching the life of Harriet Tubman. As part of the Tubman Centennial in 2013, his moving series of drawings and paintings will be shown at the Museum of Rural Life in Denton, Maryland—not far from where Tubman likely passed through on her escapes to freedom. Capture a rare glimpse into the lives of Haitian migrant farm workers through the compelling photographs and field notes of documentary photographer Phil Decker, who worked in the mid-1980s as an outreach worker for migrant farm workers in Salisbury. This exhibit and archive provides the Nabb Center with a significant historical document on the origin of the Eastern Shore’s Haitian community, many of whom fled political and economic upheaval in Haiti in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Around the same time, keith Graffius opened Crabi Gras, a store the largest selection of hot sauces and the coolest ‘Eastern Shore themed’ T-shirts around! These two men became fast friends. Their combined commitment to the community, businesses and local growers/waterman created a buzz in the downtown area. Chef Fanning’s passion for food and the development of Cambridge’s Art’s and Entertainment District continues as his 2nd restaurant ‘Stoked’ opens this March. I’ve decided not to begin with a long dissertation about what foods are healthy, ways to boost your metabolism and new exercise trends. Bottom line is “get up and get moving”. It’s as simple as that friends. Now, everyone’s “get moving” will be determined by their physical abilities and current activity level. Work to get your heart rate up, don’t be afraid to break a sweat and just push yourself to stay active and make it fun. Find a sport, exercise or activity that keeps you entertained and stick with it. Build your week around that activity and make it a routine. find resources and organized groups to help keep you get motivated and moving, and increase your fitness.Okay, I’ll touch on diet briefly understanding that if I submitted an article about health and fitness without encouraging healthy eating habits I am sure to be struck by lightning. My advice is to enjoy what you eat. That is not a free pass to raid the counter at Golden Coral, however you can enjoy the things you like in moderation. Try new foods and flavors and educate your pallet to what you like. Also round out your diet to make sure you are replenishing your body of the necessary nutrients. Be careful not to add items like butter, salt and sweeteners just because you think every baked potato must have cheese and sour cream. Who knows, you may actually enjoy the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables without the unnecessary evils. Visit www.choosemyplate.gov for healthy eating tips recommended by the uSDA. Log your caloric intake and compare it to your daily burn. This takes a little work but trust me, if you are ready to make this “lifestyle commitment” this can be a key tool to getting started. Talk to your physician or simply research your recommended daily calorie intake for your age, gender and body type. Then start taking inventory of what you eat and drink throughout the day and don’t forget… include your daily

activity! Measure your caloric burn with a simple wrist monitor which you can find online or at your local sporting goods store.Now, let’s get active! Here are just a few ways to kick-start your “fitness” today. Remember think of activities you enjoy like walking, jogging, cycling or even team sports. Join a group of friends with similar interests. Then carve out dedicated times throughout the week and commit yourself to at least 20 solid minutes of physical activity 3 times per week (minimum!). Most importantly, have fun and I’ll see you at the finish line!

Group exercise Options: Having a buddy or exercising with a group is a great way to stay on track to achieve your health goals. Every Saturday morning at the Salisbury Park, near Ben’s Red Swings you can find a few drop in-group exercise classes for various abilities and fitness levels. There is a small drop in fee but no contracts or commitments. If you enjoy cycling, running and swimming or if you’re looking for a new challenge, join this dedicated group of athletes as they prepare for triathlon events throughout the year. Anyone can join and you don’t have to be a seasoned triathlete. These guys will work with you to get you across the finish line.
