It was 4:45PM on Thursday, January 15th. My February magazine just went off to the printer. Phew, always a relief when I say, ‘Let’s print it!’ Then I raced off to pick up my daughter early from school so that she could hopefully, get her Learner’s Permit.

Palms sweaty, heart racing, I slipped into the passenger seat of my car. My daughter, 15 and 9 months, fresh with her ‘Permit’ and ZERO experience, took the wheel. The Motor Vehicle Admin office, just off Route 50, is across from probably the busiest McDonalds and a very tricky in-tersection. Jack, our Korean exchange student, is sitting in the back of the car. I could see the fear in his eyes, but he didn’t utter a word.

“Ok, you have the right of way, but you still have to take in your surroundings and be a defensive driver. (I’m not sure she understood what defensive driver meant). Now is the time to turn on your turn signal”.

“Mom, I don’t understand what ‘right of way’ means,“ she said in a panic.I am pointing out the signs and barking out instructions, feeling completely

helpless. “No, you don’t slow down when merging onto the bypass, darling, unless it

is gridlock. Use your mirrors”.“Wow Lindsey, you do great, you do great”, Jack says, every time she made a

turn or stopped successfully. We all laughed.The first few weeks, she didn’t notice a traffic light and almost rear-ended a

BMW, me screaming, stop Stop STTOPPPP! She went up an embankment, over shooting a turn and said the car behind her was following too closely and scared her.

Luckily, the plants that nicely line the side of the driveway are hibernating. A friend of hers, who had his full license for 2 weeks, barely escaped with his

life this week. On the back roads of Wicomico County, driving too fast at night, a deer jumped out of the woods and he lost control, over compensated and hit

a tree. The car was totaled and had she been in the passenger seat, she might not be here today. I remember being her age and losing a friend with the same scenario. Frightening!

She wants job, a car, independence and I just want to keep her safe. I guess that’s just how it is watching your kids grow up… when I look at her and my son, I am so very proud!

This month, I am looking forward to having Lindsey drive us to lots of fun things happen-ing across Delmarva. A trip to the Ward Museum to see their Student Art Show, 3 new ex-

hibits at Salisbury University and AI&G. There is the newest 1st Saturday events in Salisbury, Downtown Arts nights in Berlin, Snow Hill,

Salisbury and Chincoteague. Blues Jam in Snow Hill…oh I could go on and on!

I am proud to once again be the Honorary Chair of the upcoming 15th annual St. Paddy’s 5K Run/2K Walk.

This important fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at the Salisbury Elks Lodge. The scenic 5K (3.1 mile) course will guide runners and walkers around

the park and Zoo to the finish line. This year’s goal is to have a minimum of 250 runners/walkers and raise over $20,000 for Alzheimer’s respite care programs in the lower tri-county area.

As many of you know, my Mom had Alzheimer’s and attended the Music Program at MAC during this past year.

Even if she couldn’t remember the names of those she loved, she could remember the words to hymns she knew her whole life. It is

a mysterious disease, but not one that robs you of your soul, and Mom’s was nourished by this program in so many ways. We lost her on Christ-mas Eve, but I am sure she is singing in heaven as I write this.

Over 8,500 persons and their families in the area are dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Monies raised by the St.

Paddy’s Run/Walk will directly impact local families via the respite care program and other caregiver support services provided by MAC Incorporated, Area Agency on Aging.

the magic words “Inc.” or “LLC” on their own contract forms, in their advertising, their business cards, or their signage. The result is that the customer thinks he or she is dealing with an individual, not a corporation or an LLC. If there is a dispute that ends up in a lawsuit, the customer sues the individual, not the corporation or the LLC. Most often in these situations, the Courts will allow the lawsuit to go forward against the individ-ual business owner.

The rule for “Inc.” and “LLC” is, “Use it or lose its protection.” If you are a small business owner, right now would be a good time to look at your contract forms, your advertising, your business cards, your signage, and every other public thing you use for your business to make sure they all contain those magic words.

diversify your portfolio, which might other-wise be dominated by stocks and therefore be susceptible to big swings in value. (While diversification can help reduce the effects of volatility, it can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.)

However, it’s still useful to be aware of the effects of rising interest rates on bonds of different maturities. Typically, when rates rise, long-term bonds will fall in value more than short-term bonds. So if you only owned long-term bonds, your portfolio could take a bigger hit than if you owned both short- and long-term bonds. Again, this might not be a big issue if you intend to hold bonds until they mature — but if your plans change, a drop in value in your bond holdings could be cause for concern. Furthermore, if you just owned long-term bonds, your money would be tied up, thereby not allowing you to take advantage of newly issued, higher-paying bonds.

You can help protect yourself against the potential negative effects of rising interest rates by incorporating a “fixed-income ladder” in your portfolio. You can

How Should You RespondTo Higher Interest Rates?

If the Federal Reserve (Fed) raises short-term interest rates this year, as many finan-cial professionals predict, what will it mean to you? As a consumer, you might experi-ence the “ripple” effects if long-term interest rates eventually follow suit, affecting mort-gages and other loans. But as an investor, you might quickly feel the impact of a move by the Fed — especially if you own bonds.

In fact, the value of your existing bonds might drop noticeably if interest rates were to rise. That’s because no one will give you full price for your lower-paying bonds when new bonds are being issued at a higher in-terest rate. So if you want to sell your bonds, you might have to take a loss on them.

Of course, if you were always planning to hold your bonds until maturity, you might not be overly concerned with falling prices. Assuming your bond issuers don’t default — and defaults are rare among “invest-ment grade” bonds — you will continue collecting regular interest payments until your bonds mature, at which point they will be redeemed at full face value. Fur-thermore, just owning bonds can help you

build this ladder by purchasing fixedincome securities — such as corporate or municipal bonds — in various maturities. With your ladder in place, a portion of your portfolio matures at regular intervals. Consequently, you can benefit from any increase in interest rates by reinvesting your maturing bonds at the higher rate. And if interest rates should fall, you still have your longer-term bonds working for you. (Generally, longer-term vehicles pay higher rates than shorter-term ones.)

Even if the Fed does raise short-term rates in 2015, it doesn’t necessarily signal the start of a trend. Interest rate movements are notoriously hard to predict — and you probably won’t help yourself by trying to “time” your investment decisions based on where rates may be heading. But techniques such as a fixed-income ladder can work for you in all interest rate environments. So as you think about how you’ll invest in bonds in the years ahead, keep this type of “all-weather” strategy in mind. It may be able to help you keep the “guesswork” to a minimum.

On Thursday, January 22, 2015, Brews Up hosted an event with the Perdue Chicks Relay for Life Team and 34 guests for their first ‘Cork for a Cause’ event. This year's Snow Hill Blues Jam on Saturday, March 14 is a tribute to the late Burley Strand, who passed away

in November, 2014. Lovingly known as "Mr. B.," he was a driving force of the Snow Hill All Stars whose guitar and voice graced the stage every year since the Snow Hill Blues Jam began in 2008. This year, the Snow Hill All Stars have banded together to honor his spirit and his unique brand of music. The lineup includes Chris English on guitar, Angel Resto on bass, Miss T on sax, Margot Resto on vocals and congas, and Robert "Unknown Drummer" Buckner on drums.

"Each one of us has many years of great memories of sharing the stage with Mr. B. that we bring to this special night," says Margot Resto, also in the All Stars lineup since its beginning. "The Snow Hill All Stars will be honoring Mr. B. by playing with our hearts, to keep his spirit and the Blues alive. "Burley was not only known for his sincere, sweet voice and his soulful and warm guitar, but also for the way he made people feel. He'd strum a chord, then call out "somebody say YEAH!" And the willing audience erupted with a "YEAH!" and on an on, and before he knew it, he'd have everybody in the palm of his hand, singing and hollering and dancing. He brought honesty to the stage, a pure joy that was impossible to resist. Resto explains: "We feel lucky to have known this wonderful man, and grateful for all the music he gave us. We can't wait to make music in his name." Also performing will be Dave Chappell, a Washington, DC native, who is one of the most sought after and respected musicians in the area. In his second appearance in Snow Hill Chappell will perform as “Dave Chappell and His So-Called Friends.” For the last several years, Chappell has won the Washington Area Music Awards (WAMMIES) for Musician of the Year, Rock Instrumentalist of the Year and Roots Rock Instrumentalist of the Year. He has performed with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legends Jerry Lee Lewis, Sam Moore of Sam & Dave, Percy Sledge, Johnny Johnson, and guitar wizard, Danny Gatton. Berlin, Md. – Although the latest figures from the Coastal Association of REALTORS® (CAR) reflects increased contracts and settlements compared to the same time last year, area home values dipped slightly in January, as is custom across the country during the coldest time of the year.

CAR’s January local housing sta-tistics – which represent the activity of CAR’s more than 1,000 REALTOR® members in Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties – reflect a 17.2 percent increase in contracts, or pending sales, and a 13.7 percent in-crease in settlements, or completed sales. However, the figures also reflect a 12.6 percent increase in the average number of days that homes stay on the market, a 21.9 percent decrease in list prices, and a 22 percent decrease in sales prices.

“It’s not uncommon that real estate sales are not at their best during the cold month of January. Also, a lot of people are strapped for cash after the

holiday season,” said Joel Maher, vice president of the CAR board of directors and a REALTOR® with Coldwell Banker Residential of Salisbury. “But as the weather gets warmer and tax returns start coming in, we’ll definitely see a boost in foot traffic and settlements.”

According to the National Associ-ation of REALTORS®, home sales gen-erally invariably decline in September after school begins, then hold steady in October, dip again in November, and stabilize again in December. Because of the dark, cold weather spanning the country, January is not pretty for home sales, with an average plunge of 27 percent. Sunlight then flickers in February with a small rise and much stronger activity then arises in March and April, and throughout the summer months.

The local statistics reflect a strong inventory of homes available for sale, with a very slight – 0.6 percent – in-crease in listings. Prospective buyers are encouraged to take advantage

shady garden. Some will thrive in full shade and others in part shade, but the color of the leaves are often brighter in the shade. Carex need moist but well drained soils and will do poorly if the soil dries out. They do bloom in the spring, but the beauty of the Carex is the

dense stiff leaves that spike out of the soil and maintain their color and shape all year long. Deer are usually not interested in nibbling on Carex, making them an excellent evergreen groundcover in areas of heavy deer population. Although Carex are spreading plants, they spread slowly, so the plants can be used as a border to a path in the shade garden or to define a path through the woods. February 20th, 2015 is the next 3rd Friday in Downtown Salisbury, and

Salisbury University | Down-town Campus, on North Division Street, will open two brand new exhibitions this Friday, Light Shadow Wave Water by Edward Brown and the new works of Kristin Walsh. Brown, an associate profes-sor in SU’s Art Department, uses charcoal to draw dark and light tones, accentuated with calligraphic lines, to render the rhythmic and nebulous forms of waves at Assateague

Island. Kristin Walsh’s work also draws from landscapes, and investigates how changing uses of the environment refuse any clean dis-tinction between “natural” and “manmade.” She uses installation, photographic prints and sculpture to construct a series of ob-ject-landscape scenographies to make visible how and why an object creates a spatial void in a landscape.

The Art Institute and Gallery will also be opening a brand new exhibition, the 15th Annual Blooming Artist Youth Showcase! Be sure to check out the entries from our area’s children! Awards will be made in four cate-gories; pre-k, elementary, middle and high

school. Submissions will be judged and the reception and award ceremony will be held during 3rd Friday. In ad-dition, the work of

Life can change in a split second, as it did 17 years ago for Krista Danner. She

was on her way to high school, when she was involved in a major car accident, thrown head first through the windshield and barely survived the crash. After weeks in a coma, when she awoke, her brain had sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Recovery for Krista took years of rehab, including having to retrain her brain. She had to relearn how to walk, talk and feed herself. She remem-bers how lovingly she was treated at Health

South, like it was yesterday. It seems like yesterday for her, and in fact, while we were chatting, she thought the accident was only 9 years ago. In many ways, Krista said she still feels like a teenager, longing to drive a car and wishing she were still in a relation-ship with her high school boyfriend. She feels stuck in a time warp.

With limited use of her left arm combined with her traumatic brain injury, it’s been a rough road for Krista to achieve independent living. It’s been impossible for her to get a job

that is rewarding. Several years ago, she was very unhappy, as the only job she could find was assembling bubbles with other TBI people. She felt humiliated and unfulfilled. She didn’t want to be in a day program, lumped in with people with far fewer mental and physical abilities.

At that time, a couple of Re-source Coordinators noticed she wasn’t happy. She made the

transition to United Needs & Abilities as they listened to her needs and created a person-alized care plan to help her achieve her goals for independent living.

Krista credits her current happiness and independence from utilizing the services provided by United Needs & Abilities. They helped her transition from a group home to an apartment. Although she still needs caregivers, she has been able to enroll into WorWic Community College. Her UNA care-givers provide the transportation, school mentor, tutors and job coaches. It’s the family atmosphere that she loves. If she is able, she hopes to become an Occupational Therapist or Speech Therapist one day. Right

Krista starts a part-time job volunteering at a retail store to see how she can manage it along with her class as WorWic. If all works out, she will move into a paying job there. In her own words, “I am fun-loving and I make it through each day with the people I have in my life. Life is what you make it. Go for your dreams”.

Children who snore are also more prone to have orthodontic issues that can lead to pediatric sleep apnea. Some children have a narrow jaw and/or their lower jaw is recessed which may be causing them to snore. Don’t panic! Even if your child snores and has one or more of the symptoms does not mean they have pediatric sleep apnea. Having a sleep study done at a sleep lab or in-home can help with diagno-sis. Sleep studies monitor oxygen levels, snoring levels, heart rhythm and brain function. They are used to determine your child’s apnea index

Part of my morning routine is silence. For me, this some-

times includes praying, sometimes focusing on what I’m grateful for, and sometimes meditation. Medi-tation is a tricky subject for some of us: preconceived notions of what meditation is exactly often leads to either not even trying or trying and giving up.

What meditation isAccording to Wikipedia, “medi-

tation is a practice in which an in-dividual trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness, either to realize some benefit or as an end in itself.” While there are practices where meditation involves “empty-ing the mind,” or more accurately, “focus the mind on a single thing,” not all meditation is that way. The important thing about meditation is finding a state of calm and mindful-ness. It takes practice.

What meditation is notIt’s not hard in the same way that

running is not hard. If you’re out of shape, running may not seem so easy, but if you were to run a short distance every day for a week, you’d then be able run a bit longer dis-tance the next week and/or run a bit faster. Meditation is no different. It takes consistency and practice to become easier and more effective.

Here are 3 tips that can make your journey into meditation a little easier:

1. Find a quiet spot. And a quiet time. Early in the morning is nice, before the household erupts. You can sit, stand, or lie down. Eyes opened or closed. It may take some experimenting to find what is com-fortable for you.

2. Focus on your breathing. Feel

your chest expand as you breathe in through your nose. Exhale through your mouth and imagine blowing away stress and worry. You can choose to exhale through your nose if you wish – whatever is com-fortable for you. (Are you sensing a theme here?) Don’t worry if your mind wanders; learning to control your mind comes a bit later. Just go back to focusing on your breathing.

3. Do this every day. The first few days may only be for a minute or so. That’s okay! Consistency and prac-tice; every day, even if only for a minute or two. It would also be okay to try meditating more than once a day. Do try to select one particular time of day as a basis, with any addi-tional times being a bonus.

Try this for a week and you’ll see a difference in your ability to relax and calm your mind. At that point you’ll be ready to take your meditation practice up a notch.

New March shows at the Ocean City Center for the Arts

anticipate the changing seasonsOCEAN CITY, MD — Feb. 14, 2015 — New

art shows will warm the walls of the Ocean City Center for the Arts from March 2 through 28. The public is invited to the opening reception at the arts center on First Friday, March 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. to meet the artists and enjoy hors d’oeuvres.

March’s featured artist is Dennis Young who is exhibiting a show of pastel and oil paintings entitled “Waiting for Summer.”

Young, a doctor from New Castle, De., gen-erally works outside on location, but retreats to his studio in cold weather, often painting por-traits. He waits for the season when he can get back outside to paint and participate in several regional plein air events, including the August event in Ocean City.

The “Waiting for Summer” show will feature many of Young’s plein air paintings done in the vivid hues that pastel paints bring to his art.

“Pastels so easily lend themselves to the spontaneity and brilliance of plein air painting,” he said. “Pastels are immediate. The colors are multiple and intense. I don’t have to mix colors, and I can put the paint on thickly, so they’re sometimes mistaken for oils.”

Also featured in March is an exhibit entitled “Black and White,” an all media group show where the artists’ works are limited to mono-chromatic black and white.

Exhibiting in Studio E are painters Stasia Heubeck, who studied at the renowned Schuler School in Baltimore, and Rosamaria Celozzi, a student at Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin. March’s artisan in residence is Mary Jane Hastings who will be showing miniature paint-ings done primarily with a palette knife.

The Ocean City Center for the Arts at 502 94th Street is the home of the Art League of Ocean City, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the Ocean City area through education, exhibits, scholarships, programs and community art events. The arts center is supported by memberships, corporate and civic funding, donations and sales of art.
