Course Overview Commando Survival on the Moorsvis an intensive survival skills course which culminates in a
challenging 24 hour expedition, putting your new found skills to the ultimate test. The
course is delivered by a range of handpicked instructors who have been selected by Bear and
his team of highly trained experts who have worked behind the scenes with Bear on various
shows including Man V Wild/Born Survivor, Escape from Hell, Wild Weekends and Get Out
Alive. Bear Grylls Survival Academy, Survival on the Lowlands, takes place on Dartmoor in
Devon which is one of the most hostile environments within the UK. Set in winter, this
course will be tough and incredibly challenging. Dartmoor itself is a diverse location favored
by British Special Forces for training, here, it is likely you will experience four seasons in
just one day and this alone can make survival very difficult. Survive to fight, don’t fight to
survive as the military say.
Day 1 - Arrival The adventure begins at 14:30 with a chance to meet your course leaders , fellow
participants, and to ensure you have all the items on the Kit List. We will then move over
rugged terrain by 4x4 vehicles to the Academy’s wilderness base camp. On arrival you will
receive a safety brief, course brief and outline. You will then be issued with your personal
training equipment. Now we are straight in to a BG Priorities of Survival lecture followed by
a practical skills session on knife use. As the evening goes on, you will have the chance to
explore your bleak surroundings and sort out your sleeping accommodation. After that your
culinary skills will be tested as you prepare and cook an Alpine Style Hut Meal for your group
with only wild and natural ingredients. It will be your first real challenge with no running
water, electricity or processed food on hand. This may be the last hot food you eat…..
Day 2 Today includes a field physical training session, practical use of knots and improvised
harnesses lesson followed by survival navigation training. The day continues with remote and
improvised First Aid, followed by the practical use of snares, traps and drop out fishing
lines. As evening draws in you will learn how to forage for food and identify what can be
eaten in the wild, purify and filter dirty river water, skin, gut and prepare a range of wild
food and another navigation lesson but this time using the stars. The day ends with some
Bear Grylls survival stories around the fire.
Day 3 After an early start and a lesson in self-defense, self-preservation, primal instinct training,
you’re off on an extreme mountain training day. You’ll learn how to cross difficult ground,
navigate across wild terrain, dynamically and safely ascend and descend cliff faces and
difficult ground using a variety of BG techniques. In late afternoon you will be travelling to
the next training area in typical extreme Bear Grylls fashion. If the weather conditions
allow, then its low a level helicopter flight across the moor. There may be some surprises on
the way…It’s now time to put all your newly found skills to practice as you are dropped off
and left alone on the moor to survive for 24 hours in some of the most remote and harshest
terrain in the world. Good luck!
Day 4 If you have survived the night, no one is going to rescue you. As a team, self-rescue is the
key, run, jump, climb, swim. You must reach captivity…
About Bear Grylls Bear’s passion for the outdoors was forged during his childhood in the UK on the Isle of Wight where
his late father taught him to climb and sail. Trained from a young age in martial arts, Bear went on to
spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces, serving with 21 SAS. It was here that he
perfected many of the skills that his fans all over the world enjoy watching him pit against mother-
nature.
Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in
Africa, where he broke his back in three
places, and after enduring months in military
rehabilitation, Bear went on to become one
of the youngest ever climbers to reach the
summit of Mount Everest.
Today perhaps Bear is best known for his
international TV series Man Vs Wild (known
as Born Survivor in the UK) which has
achieved a global audience of over 1.2 billion
followers. Bear is also a huge philanthropist
supporting many charities including Global
Angels and the RNLI. He is also proud to serve
as the youngest ever Chief Scout, a role
which allows him to inspire many of the
28 million scouts around the world to get
out there, follow their dreams and build their
own adventures.
“So many people have asked me over the
years where they can learn extreme,
practical survival - the type that requires
spirit, determination and the skills to
self-rescue against the odds, in some of the
harshest terrain around. So it is with great
pride that we can now finally launch the
Bear Grylls Survival Academy to be able to share some of these skills and what it really means to be
able to look after yourself when the chips are down,” says Bear Grylls. “Oh, and it may hurt a little.”
Bear Grylls Survival Academy Bear Grylls Survival Academy was launched in the UK in 2012 with the intensive 5 day Survival in the
Highlands Course in Scotland. Since then, the UK Academy has also launched a 24 Hour Family Course
aimed at parents and children, a 24 Hour Adult Course and Ultimate Team Building Courses for the
corporate market. All courses have proved to be extremely popular and are now selling out fast. In
July 2013, Bear announced the launch of BGSA in the USA, offering a rare chance for a lucky few
outdoor enthusiasts across the country to learn his extreme survival techniques. The first US Academy
kicked off in the Catskill Mountain region, a wild undulating area of New York State in November 2013,
with further course launches in California, Colorado and Texas soon after. In January 2014, the team
travelled to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe to launch the first ever ‘Survival in Africa’ Course.
