From the Founder

Dear Friends,

In 1993 Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation was founded in memory of my son Barrett “Bear” Krupa who at 8 years of age lost his life to this horrific disease.

Our mission then was simple – to eliminate pediatric cancer and to provide hope and support to those who are touched by it. While we have experienced tremendous growth and have broadened our services, our mission remains the same.

As we celebrate our 20th Anniversary we can reflect on the many wonderful things we have accomplished yet we have not met our mission to eliminate this disease.

Over these past 20 years we have raised an excess of $15.5 million to fund national research projects and support programs at other childhood cancer organizations and hospitals. Our reach has spanned the United States, having a presence in 36 states as well as into Canada and Europe. This money has also allowed Bear Necessities to provide over 4,000 Bear Hugs to children in the Chicago land area. Sadly children continue to be diagnosed and pediatric cancer remains the number one cause of death by disease in our children.

In the years ahead we will remain committed to our mission and have an even stronger focus on research through collaborative efforts and fundraising specifically for research. Less than 4% of all dollars raised for cancer research are dedicated for childhood cancers, it’s our responsibility to provide those dollars to give our children hope.

Until the day arrives where no child suffers from this disease, our Bear Hugs Program will provide that day to day support for children and their families as they wage these courageous battles. Volunteer based Bear Hugs Outreach Programs will be opening across the United States with the most recent success of our Houston Bear Hugs Outreach Program as its model. These programs will serve the pediatric cancer communities in their geographic areas by supplying the much needed support services that are so necessary to children and their families through their cancer journeys.

As we embark on the next 20 years, I ask you to continue to support us in our mission and help us give these kids the chance to just be a kid!

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15 in the United States.

Bear Tie Ball 2012 Chairs Nina Mariano & Tracy Scurto with Masters of Ceremonies Roe Conn & Val Warner. With their leadership and support, the event “Rhythms For A Reason” raised over $680,000.

Auxiliary Board In 2011-12, the Auxiliary Board hosted two major service events for the kids touched by Bear Necessities. The highlight of the year was the 2nd Annual Teddy Bear Ball at the Lincoln Park Zoo in which patients and their families are invited for a day of crafts, face painting, and games along with a ride on the famous carousel. The board’s major fundraising event was the 6th Annual Signature event, now renamed “Purple Affair for the BEAR.” With over 350 guests in attendance for the event held at the River East Art Center, the Auxiliary Board continued to surpass their goals and raised over $40,000 for Bear Necessities.

Run For The BearThe Bear Necessities’ 17th Annual Run for the Bear had a record breaking number of runners on a brisk but sun-filled morning. The official “Ready, Set, Go” was given by Bear Hug Ambassador, Teagan. Clad in a winter hat and coat, six-year-old Teagan met runners to give her small but mighty high fives and “Great Jobs” that reminded everyone that no matter their time, anyone taking strides in the fight against pediatric cancer that morning was a winner!

Bear Hugs - A Bear Hug is a customized experience that brightens the life of a child going through cancer. The Bear Hug outreach serves both in-state and out-of-state children that are being treated at one of the nine major Chicago area hospitals with pediatric oncology departments. A child’s family may receive immediate family support for f inancial burden and essential needs.

Golf For The Bear The Golf for the Bear held to tradition and offered participants a great day of golf for an incredible cause. Nineteen-year-old Leukemia survivor and Bear Hug Ambassador Samantha helped Bear Necessities reach its goal through the “Outdrive the Survivor” contest that challenged every participant to hit their ball further than hers (an average drive of 250 yards)!
